The sport provides Jim with the opportunity to set goals, maintain physical and mental health, and most importantly, the ability to spread positivity. Jim discovered his passion for running when he was six years old growing up on his grandparent's farm. He raced his grandfather who was driving a tractor. Jim participated in track in middle and high school. He also ran cross country in high school and walked on to his university cross country team and ran a couple of years before becoming plagued with injuries and experiencing burn out. Jim returned to running in his late 30's and continues to run. For Jim, running was a means of escape from the daily grind, not fully understanding the positive impact running was having on his physical and mental health. Jim says when he runs, he runs to "feel free", "free to just be". He began working with a coach who provided structure during his training blocks. Jim is grateful for all his coach has taught him about training, recovery, and the overall benefits of running to his life. Once Jim was able to fully grasp what running was giving to him, he began to share it, empowering others to get out and move through partnerships with brands he used during training and on his social media channels. He has run 11 marathons and has currently completed five of the six world marathon majors (London, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City). Tokyo will be his final marathon to complete the sixth. Episode 56: Leah DeKalb - runner & triathlete

This week I talk with Leah DeKalb. Leah grew up in Northern California, where she was always immersed in something active: riding horses, playing soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, track, skiing, you name it! Maintaining an active lifestyle is a part of who she is at her core. Running has always been her go-to sport to stay in shape, both mentally and physically. In 2014 she completed her first half-marathon, and in 2015, her first full marathon. She continued to love running but always sought more ways to stay active. After watching her husband compete in a handful of triathlons, she thought, “I'd like to do that, but just the thought of it scares the daylights out of me!” She worked with her husband to learn how to swim (she could not swim a full length of the pool when she first started!), gained confidence on the bike, and took the plunge into her first Sprint Triathlon in 2018. Since then, she has continued to race in many local sprints and has qualified and raced the Olympic distance at Age Group Nationals two times. Leah took the plunge to “tri” out her first 70.3 in Waco, TX this past October. This year she has thoroughly enjoyed being a member of Team Varlo and the Elite Feed Athlete Team. When she's not training or racing, Leah is working on finishing up her Master's degree in Business Management and working as a Graduate Assistant. She also loves spending time with her dog, Woodford, and husband of four years, Jeff. She looks forward to continuing to push past her limits to achieve more than she ever dreamed possible in the sport of triathlon and hopes to inspire others to do the same! Raina is currently training for her second marathon, The St. Jude's Memphis Marathon. She would also like to attempt a triathlon if she can ever perfect her swim. While Nelle began competing in cross country and track at an early age and had a short, but successful career in middle and high school, it was after the birth of her second daughter that her health and fitness goals shifted towards endurance running and nutrition behaviors. In the first year following her second child's birth, she became involved in her local running community and found herself unexpectedly to be winning trail and road races outright. However, after surviving a rough year in 2016 with multiple long-undiagnosed tick diseases, her health was in shambles, as was her career and athletic performance. Despite a Whole30 reset and what may be referred to by some as “clean eating”, inflammation took hold and required significant medical attention for over 18 months. Since early 2017, she has been on the mend and continues to navigate ongoing intermittent “flares”, with thankfully, decreasing occurrence. Through reflection, functional medicine testing, careful nutrition, and ongoing flexibility with her training and lifestyle, Nelle has been able to continue a highly functional life and continue to make gains in her running performance. After joining a running club, Jenna was injured shortly after trying to do too much too soon and was recommended to do biking and swimming as rehab. She learned how to swim, got a bike and ultimately did her first triathlon at IRONMAN Buffalo Springs 70.3. Jenna has gone on to win her age-group at the ITU Long Distance World Championships and then at IRONMAN Cork. After seeing what her body was capable of, Jenna changed her career from an IT Project Manager to become a strength and conditioning coach to help others discover what they are capable of working full time as a triathlon coach. You can find Jenna on Instagram at @jennacaer and her website is http://jennacaer.com/. She also created the Endurance Fit app (@endurancefitapp), which is available for iOS and Android.
