Episode 6, Season 2 During this episode on the Rebel and Be Well Podcast we are honored to speak with Anders Varner, Co-Owner of Barbell Shrugged.  We spoke with Anders to learn with our audience how to stop using old habits that don't serve our health, discovering greater purpose, and tuning into happiness in your present stage (and age) of life. Listen to consider resetting and recalibrating to align with the season you're finding yourself in mentally, emotionally and physically- including schedules, lifestyle, and priorities. Anders is host of the Top 10, Health and Fitness Podcast "Barbell Shrugged", and had also founded San Diego Athletics in Pacific Beach, CA before selling and investing time into Creating the R.A.P.I.D Executive Mentorship and Diesel Dad Mentorship programs. These mentorship programs implement world class protocols in functional medicine and professional coaching to help busy executives and fathers be the leaders they want to be. He has coached athletes from every major sport including the NFL, MLB, WWE, and CrossFit. An athlete himself, Anders has competed in the CrossFit regional four times, medaled at multiple Olympic Weightlifting competitions, and had the honor or being John Cena's training partner for four years. During our interview, Anders shares both good and bad experiences from his own life, and mistake-patterns he notices in his clients. As a coach, he does a wonderful job helping us to feel more hopeful and accepting of life's changes; reflecting on our age increases, and with that the opportunity and need for new behaviors. Notably, making changes to the way we're distributing energy, resources, and choosing to care for our physical, mental, and relational health.  "We need a different skillset to get through the next 10, 15, 20 years" - Anders Varner - Co-Owner - Barbell Shrugged After addressing the personal, we dig into Anders' experience working on the health of business professionals. He educates and coaches not only individual wellbeing but also the wellbeing of the company these individuals work for (financial success, etc.).  Ask yourself: How much is my professional performance affected by my health? Regardless of our listeners' profession, Anders offers questions worth each of us asking. Next, we take a deeper dive into stress, our awareness of it, and how to find balance while living in a culture that demands "more"- without forgetting our intrinsic desires to grow.  1) Where is my attention? 2) What is the intention that I'm bringing to those things? 3) How does this manifest into my life? Lastly, with exceptional knowledge and perspective on lifestyle medicine, Anders shared the pros and cons to an outside-in approach vs. an inside-out approach to health: Outside In: What external things can we put onto or into our body to create a better "human package"? Inside Out: Let's seek raw data, work on our immunity and mental health, and then move onto: nutrition, movement, and other outside variables.  For business leaders tuning in: How can businesses invest in their people? Leaders have heavy roles as well; where are you finding your support systems and can we identify where to begin solving the gap in our own health, and that of our company? For all other adults: What needs to be valued most now for my health? What needs to change in my life to respond to that? We invite all to tune into this episode - aging, growth, and change can be challenging; hearing from others who have found solutions could be a helpful step in a longer healthspan.  Resources - Listen to the renowned Barbell Shrugged Podcast, and sign up for their varying programs, below! https://barbellshrugged.com/ (https://barbellshrugged.com/) - Meet and learn from Anders in-person winter 2022 during The Point's February Lovework Retreat and Workshop- open to all! Trauma Informed Weight Lifting with Mariah Rooney and Mark Schneider

During this episode of the Rebel and Be Well Podcast we connect with Mariah Rooney (MSW, LICSW) and Mark Schneider- Co Founders of Trauma Informed Weight Lifting (TIWL). TIWL is a healing co-operative focused on researching the healing potential of weight lifting for trauma-impacted adolescents and adults, and training coaches and personal trainers, to take a trauma informed and healing centered approach to their work with athletes and clients.  On this episode we talk invisible insults to the body, symptomatology of trauma, what's contributing to it, and how a program building strength with physical weights can bridge into the psychological.  Mariah and Mark grant us insightful opportunities to utilize our gyms to heal trauma. They opened up this podcast discussion by sharing how, in lifting weights, we see a tangible example of progress; it offers us the chance to work against something- an external stress or resistance. We find control, we can manipulate it, and we can grow in more ways than physical as we notice a change. "Strength is a product of trust [yourself to make an attempt, to potentially fail, to recover, those around you if you need help]" - Mark Schneider, Co-Founder Christa Rymal chose to discuss this concept much further with Mariah and Mark, especially given our relationship with Point guests who work in healthcare, and many others who were/are gravely and severely impacted by the pandemic. Topics that are becoming more relevant which we discuss on this episode: - How can we comfortably re-integrate ourselves into community- in-person with one another? It's an emotional experience, often on many levels for us to be in a physical space with others after learning to brace ourselves for safety in the midst of a pandemic. - Nervous system ad our bodies: How can we remember feeling safe around others, or how can we react and stay present with one another (co-regulate to the best of our ability) in the midst of active chaos? - What is trauma, how do I know if I have had trauma, and/or how will I know if others have experienced it themselves? - Once I can recognize the above, what can be done? When we break down a program such as theirs, we're looking at education from all angles- foundational understanding of trauma before diving into important specifics. Learners reflect not only on themselves and their explicit experiences, but also on systems, cultures, and outside forces that are causing potential traumas (or that we are possibly perpetrating ourselves). In understanding our own selves, we can also make mindful decisions and truly create a trauma- informed approach to coaching, healthcare services, or other professions.  We invite all to tune into this episode as our communities are currently still in, or trying to recover from, survival mode. Whether you identify as having trauma or not, these leaders cover a culturally hot topic in a novel way that directs you to where you may begin to increase physical strength in order to develop new thought patterns, mentally. "Remove the label of trauma and just look at the manifestations that it may surface...higher anxiety levels, higher depression levels, difficulty sleeping"..." you may or may not label it as trauma" - Mark Schneider, Co-Founder of TIWL Resources - Get more information about Trauma Informed Weight Lifting, it's founders, and it's programs below: https://drjaredseigler.com/ (https://www.traumainformedweightlifting.com/) - Meet and learn from Mariah and Mark in-person winter 2022 during their February workshop- open to all. Christa Rymal of The Point interviews her first (fellow) nurse, nurse educator, and nurse entrepreneur: Lisseth DeGracia. Lisseth is a Registered Nurse (RN) and has been a nurse for over 10 years with most of her career working in emergency departments and Level I trauma centers. In recent years she has also worked in a children's hospital working in vascular access, and notably, in the past year and a half, Lisseth had worked in Queens, NY working at the well known Level I trauma Center - Elmhurst - standing strong and in unity alongside other healthcare heroes on the frontlines of the pandemic. Her current full time role is within the ER unit at Northern Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis. Her list of personal hobbies and busy motherhood schedule impressed us all- especially given her newest venture to start a preventative wellness company servicing hydration IVs to patients in-home. A strong leader in her own right, this episode offers inspiration and proof that there are heroes (many undetectable by glance) still working every day to keep us safe. Sharing from her first-hand experience, having been on the 'inside', Lisseth offers heartbreaking stories as well as some lighthearted experiences that happened amidst recent medical hardships. With such heart and conviction, Lisseth also speaks to the importance of bringing "human" back into medicine.   "Human interaction is such a huge, huge thing"..."Knowing you're not alone"..."that kindness does so much [for a patient]." - Lisseth DeGracia, RN Lisseth has, and still is, a soldier in the midst of a number of crises both directly and indirectly related to the pandemic.  "On top of the COVID pandemic we have another pandemic and that is trauma. And that is nationwide and is worse with everything going on in the world." - Lisseth DeGracia, RN A mother since she was 18, and having been through a lot of life before that time, Lisseth has an incredible ability to give compassion, care, and to use non-invasive modes of connection, simply listening and being there, to begin healing a person in the midst of trauma. As someone who has seen some of the 'worst of the worst', Lisseth shares how she seems to stay human, and to not "shut down" or "shut off" the softer parts of herself to get by- in medicine or in life. In our opinion, she not only stays human but she allows others to feel that same peace, beautifully.  In this episode: - The medical importance of bringing human interaction back into practicing medicine - Chronic and acute issues that occur as a result of vitamin and mineral deficiencies - New preventative medicine approaches that bridge modern and alternative medicine  - Personal testimonial to working medical frontlines in the pandemic  - Inspirational stories of Lisseth's own, and those of patients Listen in to be touched by our human connections, our strength, and to find motivation to support another- regardless of what arena it's in. "Just being there for someone, understanding"..." When people end up in the ER, [consider that] nobody plans to be there. Additionally, Jared has done extensive work promoting neuroplasticity through functional neurology to help with the rising occurrences of chronic disease. "Stress, on the body, is probably one of the most devastating things that leads people down the path of chronic disease." - Christa Rymal, RN For many of us, neurology may be outside of our scope, yet Dr. Jared and Christa do a wonderful job together breaking down the basics of neuroplasticity, metabolic health, and what this means for people of all ages. "What we're finding with functional neurology is it's much more expansive than we'd thought"..."you really have to work hard to keep up with it." Dr. Brandon Brock A rare leader in healthcare, having and applying dual licenses in Nursing (NP) as well as Chiropractic (DC). With the most impressive and extensive list of education completed by a healthcare provider that we've met, Brandon holds certifications and degrees in specialties ranging from Stem Cell Medicine to Orthopedics. Dr. Brock received the most outstanding functional neurology teacher of the year from the ACA council of Neurology four years straight and two times from IAFNR (International Association of Functional Neurology and Rehabilitation). He also received the humanitarian award from IAFNR. Dr. Brock and is also the honorable recipient of the prestigious Living Legacy Award from Samford Universities Ida Moffett School Nursing in 2015. He has also been the spotlight student at Duke University and is on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Mindd Foundation, Vibrant Labs, and Xymogen Nutrition. He also works as an educator with Functional Medicine Meetings and is own Dr. Brock Lectures In this episode we discuss with Dr. Brandon something close to home for our podcast leaders- a mission to bridge the silos of healthcare so that patients can find health and wellbeing using whatever means best suited to him/her- not necessarily the means most familiar to a particular provider. By expanding knowledge, providers partnering across silos, and educators being open to opposing and new thoughts and ideas, there opens an opportunity for our culture to heal, and enjoy longer healthspans. With this, we also find the chance for our providers themselves to create boundaries and find respite. A necessary alternative to the over extensive demand that has been put on professionals and occurring across the healthcare industry as of late.  "That's the quintessential part of 'rebel-ism'"..."we're here to allow people to have optimal health. And that's a weird concept because healthcare has been 'name a disease; treat it'. It hasn't been, 'let's make you healthy enough to either help the disease you may have, or maybe not get one at all. That is a very different way of looking at things. I'd rather treat things on the 10 yard line, and not wait until the 100 yard line." - Dr. Brandon Brock We are excited to share knowledge today about a lesser known topic, brain health and functional neurology, that is growing rapidly due to its increased relevance given our modern lifestyles and recent social changes. What is the most effective medical approach he has seen to reversing and preventing disease? Lifestyle and behavioral changes- far fewer pharmaceuticals. Beginning first and foremost, with food:   "Like most of us [The Millions of people (2/3 of Americans) who fall into the category of having struggled with their food relationship, bodyweight, metabolic health], you're not alone. Just like I, starting this journey to reestablishing a relationship with food, it's very possible. Not just thinking of this as a diet, but as a lifestyle of a lifetime". Dr. Jeremiah Eisenschenk is a graduate of University of Minnesota Medical School and St. John's Family Medicine Residency where he also served as Chief Resident. He is board certified in Family Medicine and practices Family and Hospital Medicine at Essentia Health - Brainerd. He shares the curious experiences he has had to blend science with real human behavior, and where he hopes to steer healthcare in the future. An outside-the-box physician with a strong foundation and belief in bridging acute care with preventive medicine- we were excited to speak again with a leader who is expanding our healthcare options in honest, financially viable, and impactful ways. Traditionally, Dr. Jeremiah practices evidence-based medicine in one of the largest medical institutions in the state and greater county; diagnosing and treating acute and chronic disease states both in the clinic and in the hospital in conjunction with his healthcare team. Non-traditionally, Jeremiah has taken a personal interest in food, activity, sleep, rest, and connection - behavioral changes as a form of medicine. (Which is now widely feeding into a growing and successful list of patient outcomes -himself being one of those patients.)  We were honored to speak with a doctor local to our own retreat center in northern Minnesota. Christa offers vulnerable experiences, a philosophy that will alter the journey of your health, and a mindset that will allow you to survive, withstand, and grow better from the hardships you encounter along the way (personally and professionally).  Often introduced solely as the Founder & CEO of The Point, Christa's background is worth reiterating as it validates her role as a core leader bridging conventional and non-conventional medicine for patients and, now, guests of The Point:  Christa has worked in the healthcare industry for over 20 years in emergency medicine, cardiac care, orthopedics, primary care, diabetes education and endocrinology. She has a Bachelors Degree in Nursing, Masters Degree in HealthCare Leadership, and Advanced training from the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Institute of Functional Medicine, and American Academy of Functional Medicine. It was during her time working as a Diabetes Nurse Educator, followed by her role as Director of Diabetes Care and Endocrinology, that she was motivated to be a change agent in the way we treat and manage chronic disease. Alarmed at the increased prevalence of diabetes and the complex nature and cost of managing the disease, Christa became inspired by those patients who became partners in their care, and (with the right support, education, and coaching) were empowered to make lifestyle changes that resulted in improved health and happiness.  Highlights of this episode: Her most valuable life-lessons learned How to breakdown healthcare silos and make a whole-systems approach to health the norm- bettering the well-being for both patients and healthcare professionals:  Be willing to work with others --> refer --> open the conversation --> encourage our patients to use other modalities to health --> build those modalities up  Engage in greater dialogue with our patients What perspective can change the outcome of your personal trials Rebelling for a good cause Purpose How The Point is working to change healthcare norms Fireround of health hacks, one-liners, resources, and fun anecdotes  “My outside-of-the-box radar is getting a little cloudy these days…” – Christa Rymal In our final episode of our first podcast season, we get to hear a much more personal interview by Christa. Listeners will admire, laugh, and find hope in her stories of rebellion, and healthcare professionals specifically will feel understood and cared for in her acknowledgement of the dueling demands of administration and patient care dynamics. A testimony to the mission behind The Point, don't miss this hour of finding meaning, value, and quality in life.  "[This is] What I think is relevant, and I am happy to tell you my top three things, but it has to work in your life to implement them. Not only did we find opportunities to relate to his personal journey to health, but everything we'd learned is directly applicable to the health struggles we most all have- and the barriers we most all face in the modern age.  Many health and wellness leaders are attracted to biohacking, primal living, or natural living but are unsure where to begin. Thaddeus is a great leader in the space and this podcast is a good entry point to the subject- as Owen takes this opportunity to educate by using anecdotes, research, and a cutting edge perspective to preventative wellness. Hearing outside-the-box ideas from Thaddeus feels far less outside-the-box once you better understand his background, personality, and affinity for knowledge. By the end of the podcast we're optimistic you will have found more than one rebellious way to live well, and the resources and to do it confidently: - Personal Journey to Health: Challenges with Anxiety, Morals, Career, etc. - Biohacking - Sleep - Supplements - Living Well Within A Modern Era - Bridging Body, Mind & Soul - Spirituality + Resources to Apply at Home Especially relevant to current events, Thaddeus also shares with the audience his thoughts on what we can learn from the recent pandemic. Yes, supplements and behavioral changes are mentioned, but we were impressed with the novel idea that a perspective change is our greatest opportunity for long term health. Owen's opinion? How you see the big picture can help or hurt - altering how you care for yourself physically and feel emotionally. Listen in to understand the stance Thaddeus suggests we take as we move into the next year. Thaddeus Owen concludes our podcast with a fireround which brought up a new topic of holistic health gaining momentum in the industry- spirituality. Evaluating purpose, life, and greater meaning is a growing practice in preventative medicine and lifestyle health.  "I want to share these secrets with you. I want you to build optimal health. A heart centered physician, Dr. Bill Manahan co-founded The Wellness Center of Minnesota (1982-1992), one of America's first, physician-led, integrative medicine centers.  With a robust career to speak to and learn from, Bill now consults with physicians and clinics wishing to expand into a more integrative and holistic practice. The intention? Help to make the primary healthcare system more holistic and more joyful for patients and practitioners. In this interview Dr. Bill provides listeners with an insider's look at how medicine has changed over the past several decades in the western world- what has been lost and what has been gained. His lessons speak to both a healthcare practitioner and a care consumer, so we invite you to listen in on his perspective around the current culture of healthcare, where professionals may have blindspots, and some notable changes that have profoundly changed the course of most of his patients' lives.  Dr. Bill Manahan offers insight into what he personally had to unlearn as an expert in the medical field, some stories that changed the course of his practice, as well as a personal testimony to the need to implement lifestyle medicine in tandem with allopathic medicine. Feel reminded of the value in a whole-systems approach to wellness, and as a healthcare professional relate to Bill's call to bringing heart back into medicine: empathy, compassion, understanding, and individualized treatments as means of healing equally as important as modern pharmaceuticals - arguably more. We are honored to hear Dr. Manahan's wisdom and perspective, and we welcome you to feel heard and inspired to "rebel and be well" alongside us - tune in! - Fast vs. slow medicine - Empathy, compassion, and heart returning to conventional healthcare - Blind spots in western medicine and areas of opportunity to integrate eastern medicine - How lifestyle medicine can delay, negate, and heal chronic disease - Specific practices that have profound impacts on healing Resources Access information, events and a health clinician community open to both allopathic and alternative medicine in Minnesota - Co-Chaired by Dr. Bill Mahanan http://www.womenagingwell.org/ (http://www.minnesotaintegrative.com/) Join Dr. Bill Manahan as he leads and facilitates an all-inclusive retreat with education on preventative health, alternative care advocacy and personal growth at The Point: - September CME Retreat: https://thepointretreats.com/program-retreat/510 (https://thepointretreats.com/program-retreat/510)

Episode 8 Christa Rymal of The Point interviews Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller, MD, FACOG, FABOIM, on the resurgence of an old practice- Forest Bathing. Dr. Suzanne, a healthcare leader reintroducing forest bathing into the US, offers anecdotes, studies and much more backing the approach that time in nature medically heals. An author, speaker, an expert in several integrative modalities, having her own conventional MD background, and with an active client base in OB-GYN, Dr. Bartlett Hackenmiller didn't miss a beat in acknowledging the potentially 'out-there' claim that simply being in nature can tangibly better your health. As you listen-in, she will debunk any hesitancy with anecdotes, stories, and studies as Suzanne teaches us not only what forest bathing is, but how and why it may be practiced.  "Going outdoors and walking, hiking, running, sitting, gazing, bird watching, fishing. Whatever the activity is, if you enjoy it and you're outdoors, you're benefiting from it. It doesn't have to be some fancy new thing - it's just getting outdoors." - Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller, M.D. Board certified by American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Integrative Medicine, Suzanne holds additional certifications in herbal medicine and is a certified forest therapy guide. She currently serves as medical director for the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy and as medical advisor for the organization, AllTrails. Her partnership with AllTrails paris well with her interest in outdoor adventure; something she notes is a great alternative to quiet meditative time in nature while still having the wellbeing benefits. Her personal interest in mountain biking and National Park hiking also brought to light insider trail recommendations - shared in the podcast! Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller is a great resource for any person interested in health and wellbeing. Though her stories commonly speak to the symptom solving and healing nature of time outdoors; her work also pairs well with nutrition and movement in living a preventative medicine lifestyle. As a bonus, Suzanne also dives into breathwork and the importance of breathing exercises. Another integrative modality she recommends that, alone or paired with forest bathing, can surpass many conventional approaches in resolving unwanted symptoms.  Tune into this episode to be reminded of the small but impactful changes that you can implement immediately without side-effects or a need for continuing education. Better yet, you get to individualize how you bathe in the forest, so you will enjoy the practice on both a visceral and cognitive level - all while you're improving your health.   Resources Personal website providing integrative wellness offerings and opportunities - events, media, blog and more.  - https://integrativeinitiative.com/ (https://integrativeinitiative.com/) Authored book: The Outdoor Adventurer's Guide to Forest Bathing: Using Shinrin-Yoku to Hike, Bike, Paddle, and Climb Your Way to Health and Happiness  - https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Adventurers-Guide-Forest-Bathing/dp/1493042025 (https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Adventurers-Guide-Forest-Bathing/dp/1493042025) Join Dr. Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller as she leads and facilitates activities and education at The Point. Christa Rymal of The Point interviews Yale-trained family physician Corey Martin on dealing with, and staying resilient to, life's challenges. With years in patient care and as founder and creator of several programs and platforms committed to health through happiness, Corey teaches us a great deal about reconciling the polarity of caring for others and prioritizing your own wellbeing. It is not an either/or it's a both/and, and after listening today you will no longer brush past issues without addressing the impact they've had on you.  Dr. Corey Martin's work has most been with the healthcare professional population, but his wisdom also offers a great deal of hope for educators and anyone else struggling with life-dissatisfaction. Corey's interview covers three pillars that contribute most to burnout, and provides listeners a fresh perspective on how we can mend our communities. We have a need for long-term change within our working systems (companies often overburdening their staff), but until greater change happens on the business operations front, we cannot forget that we need to take action now towards individuals; to throw some life preservers out to save people before there are more dire consequences in the future. To avoid an even worse up-tick in disastrous outcomes for our healing frontline workers and leaders, Corey discusses opportunities in the form of: 1) Taking care of ourselves 2) Taking care of each other (peers) 3) Taking care of our families There is a great deal of hope provided in this interview, and you'll also feel the heavy reminder that we all have a need for self-compassion. Feel understood as you listen to Corey's own experiences with death and dying that most changed his approach to life. Lastly, beyond burnout and resilience, in this episode you will start understanding how to reconcile the desire to be perfect with the reality of needing to let go.  Tune in to find the strength and support to rally, and the tools to sustain. “'Good enough' is pretty damn good!” - Corey Martin, MD   Resources At home resources promoting health through happiness (resilience, purpose, gratitude, social connection, and more): - https://www.bouncebackproject.org/ (https://www.bouncebackproject.org/) Organizational retreats and programs for leadership, courage, purpose and resilience (local and international events): - https://www.innovationsinresilience.com/ (https://www.innovationsinresilience.com/) Join Dr. Corey Martin as he leads and facilitates learning, healing and leadership at The Point.
