Welcome to the Barbell Shrugged Podcast! In this episode, we dive into the NSCA's position paper on Olympic weightlifting for sport performance. Olympic weightlifting is a complex sport that requires a high level of skill, strength, power, and speed. It has become increasingly popular among athletes and coaches as a training tool to improve sport-specific performance. The NSCA's position paper provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific evidence on the benefits and risks of Olympic weightlifting for sport performance. The authors discuss the biomechanics of Olympic weightlifting, which involve the snatch and the clean and jerk, and emphasize the importance of proper form and coaching. The paper reviews the evidence on the benefits of Olympic weightlifting, including improvements in strength, power, speed, and jump performance. The authors also note that Olympic weightlifting can improve bone density, which is especially important for female athletes who are at higher risk of osteoporosis. However, the authors also discuss the potential risks of Olympic weightlifting, including the risk of injury. They note that injury rates in Olympic weightlifting are relatively low compared to other sports, but caution that proper form and technique are critical to minimizing the risk of injury. The paper provides guidelines for coaches and athletes on how to incorporate Olympic weightlifting into their training programs. The authors recommend starting with lighter weights and gradually increasing the load as athletes improve their skill and strength. They also recommend incorporating Olympic weightlifting into a comprehensive strength and conditioning program that includes other exercises such as plyometrics, agility drills, and resistance training. Overall, the NSCA's position paper on Olympic weightlifting for sport performance is a valuable resource for coaches and athletes looking to incorporate Olympic weightlifting into their training programs. By emphasizing the importance of proper technique and coaching, and providing guidelines for safe and effective training, the paper helps ensure that athletes can reap the benefits of Olympic weightlifting while minimizing the risk of injury. Episode 6, Season 2 During this episode on the Rebel and Be Well Podcast we are honored to speak with Anders Varner, Co-Owner of Barbell Shrugged. We spoke with Anders to learn with our audience how to stop using old habits that don't serve our health, discovering greater purpose, and tuning into happiness in your present stage (and age) of life. Listen to consider resetting and recalibrating to align with the season you're finding yourself in mentally, emotionally and physically- including schedules, lifestyle, and priorities. Anders is host of the Top 10, Health and Fitness Podcast "Barbell Shrugged", and had also founded San Diego Athletics in Pacific Beach, CA before selling and investing time into Creating the R.A.P.I.D Executive Mentorship and Diesel Dad Mentorship programs. These mentorship programs implement world class protocols in functional medicine and professional coaching to help busy executives and fathers be the leaders they want to be. He has coached athletes from every major sport including the NFL, MLB, WWE, and CrossFit. An athlete himself, Anders has competed in the CrossFit regional four times, medaled at multiple Olympic Weightlifting competitions, and had the honor or being John Cena's training partner for four years. During our interview, Anders shares both good and bad experiences from his own life, and mistake-patterns he notices in his clients. As a coach, he does a wonderful job helping us to feel more hopeful and accepting of life's changes; reflecting on our age increases, and with that the opportunity and need for new behaviors. Notably, making changes to the way we're distributing energy, resources, and choosing to care for our physical, mental, and relational health. "We need a different skillset to get through the next 10, 15, 20 years" - Anders Varner - Co-Owner - Barbell Shrugged After addressing the personal, we dig into Anders' experience working on the health of business professionals. He educates and coaches not only individual wellbeing but also the wellbeing of the company these individuals work for (financial success, etc.). Ask yourself: How much is my professional performance affected by my health? Regardless of our listeners' profession, Anders offers questions worth each of us asking. Next, we take a deeper dive into stress, our awareness of it, and how to find balance while living in a culture that demands "more"- without forgetting our intrinsic desires to grow. 1) Where is my attention? 2) What is the intention that I'm bringing to those things? 3) How does this manifest into my life? Lastly, with exceptional knowledge and perspective on lifestyle medicine, Anders shared the pros and cons to an outside-in approach vs. an inside-out approach to health: Outside In: What external things can we put onto or into our body to create a better "human package"? Inside Out: Let's seek raw data, work on our immunity and mental health, and then move onto: nutrition, movement, and other outside variables. For business leaders tuning in: How can businesses invest in their people? Leaders have heavy roles as well; where are you finding your support systems and can we identify where to begin solving the gap in our own health, and that of our company? For all other adults: What needs to be valued most now for my health? What needs to change in my life to respond to that? We invite all to tune into this episode - aging, growth, and change can be challenging; hearing from others who have found solutions could be a helpful step in a longer healthspan. Today I’m joined by Laurie King. I’ve been following Laurie for quite some time so I was really excited to get into this episode. Laurie is a nutrition coach who decided to pursue a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics after her own battles with an eating disorder and an under-active thyroid. Laurie decided to pursue this degree not only to remedy her own issues with eating but to put herself in the position to be able to ensure that others would never be in her position with her relationship with food. Laurie focuses on how to eat in a way that supports overall health and a balance of hormones without the need for medication. This was a conversation that I was constantly learning throughout and one that I really enjoyed. In today’s episode we talk about how Laurie got started in nutrition coaching, hormonal health, how imbalances come about, high intensity training and hormonal health, the symptoms of hormone imbalance, and much more. Show notes (4:54)- How did you get into nutrition coaching? Welcome to The Alpha Movement Podcast and to this episode of the Mindset Rx'd Series. On today's show, I'm joined by Logan Gelbrich of Deuce Gym. I first heard of Logan on the Barbell Shrugged Podcast where the focus was more on Strongman activities. Since then, he's been referred to as an excellent coach, leader and thinker by a handful of coaches I respect. His journey into CrossFit is unsual; as Logan is more than willing to admit, he's not a natural choice for a coach. Which is why, I think, he is such an excellent coach. We discuss: -How coaches can cultivate a growth mindset instead of a fixed one -Why you need to become obsessed with one particular aspect of coaching -What makes an AWFUL coach -And we get off topic as you could imagine I recorded this episode a few days back, but it's fresh in my mind as one of the best podcasts in the Mindset Rx'd Series.

In this two-part conversation, we uncovered some of those common interests including the effect of language on movement, trauma's impact on posture and his development as a business owner. This week, we're honored to bring Mike Bledsoe and Doug Larson onto the Massenomics Podcast. I found the Barbell Shrugged Podcast around the time I started doing fitness things, and it basically dominated my podcast app for about 6 months. In addition to the wildly successful, weekly podcast, they put out super-high-quality technique videos with their TechniqueWOD series, all of which I watched at an embarrassingly fast pace. In this episode, we talk about the origins of the Shrugged podcast, Mike and Doug's fitness and coaching backgrounds, what their plan was from the beginning, and where they plan on going from here. Aaaaand for the sake of clickbait, Mike makes a special you-heard-it-here-first Massenomics Exclusive Announcement regarding his newest upcoming project. I was a little unprepared in the video department, but we put together a few of the highlights from my sometimes-shaky GoPro footage for you. But don't worry, you can still listen to the full audio version. Watch some video highlights from the episode below Or check out the super-high quality full audio version below..
