8 more 70's movie reviews in the can, and they are 1. (A Late Liz 1971) Campy “god can stop yer drinking” movie, that made me an even bigger fan of Anne Baxter. I want her to blow into many of my life's situations and read the room. 2. (A New Leaf 1971) Elaine May stars and directs this dark comedy classic. Even in 73 Walter Matthau was gettin too old for this shit. This is quite good, but he's better as a tipsy baseball coach. 3.(Under Milk Wood 1971) What the heck is this arty poetry stuff, More Elizabeth Taylor please. 4.(Murder on the Orient Express 1974) Agatha Christie murder mystery book is put on film by director Sidney Lumet in the most competent way ever, in my opinion. One of those films where every actor is here. 5.(Apple Pie 1975)New York arty guy wants more than 5 bux for walkin around money from his parents, what ever shall he do. 6.(Our Winning Season 1978) 3 teens in high school try to figure out and work towards their hopes and dreams only to run face first into patriarchy and the Vietnam war draft. 7.(The Shout 1978) Alien in the tummy guy, Dr. Frankerfurter, Superman's Mom, and Alan Bates star in this movie that is weird. Also the “Shout” itself is quite loud. 8.(Fatso 1980) Ann Bancroft writes and directs this one. Dom Deluise is trying to find love and Health in a cruel harsh world. Hey friends hang in there please. As always thanks for listening.

During Ann Bancroft's first cancer treatment, which consisted of two surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation, she reached the point of being too weak to lift a light wastebasket or to walk further than a few yards. She was bald, her skin looked gray, smelled like chemicals and her mouth tasted like metal. It felt as if her life was draining away, and she could not imagine a time when she'd look and feel healthy again. Ann Bancroft is a 71-year-old, two-time breast cancer survivor with a degree in journalism. Her debut novel, Almost Family, was recently published. Ann began writing fiction after a career in journalism and communications. Cancer prompted her to retire from a demanding full-time job to become a writer. Ann has been a volunteer mentor to dozens of cancer patients. Many will relate to her story, and everyone will be encouraged. She shares how a second cancer diagnosis, thirteen years later, did not bring the fear that dominated her life the first time. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE Liz Millanova has stage four cancer, a grown daughter who doesn't speak to her, and obsessive memories of a relationship that tore apart her marriage. She thinks of herself as someone who'd rather die than sit through a support group, but now that she is going to die, she figures she might as well give it a go. Mercy's Thriving Survivors is a hospital-sponsored group held in a presumably less depressing location: Nordstrom's employee training lounge. There, Liz hits it off with two other patients, and the three unlikely friends decide to ditch the group and meet on their own. They call themselves the Oakland Mets, and their goal is to enjoy life while they can. Together, Dave, a gay Vietnam vet, and Rhonda, a devout, nice woman who's hiding a family secret and finds peace in a gospel choir, and snarky Liz plan outings to hear jazz, enjoy nature, and tour Alcatraz. In the odd intimacy they form, Liz learns to open up and get close, acknowledge and let go of the dysfunction in her marriage, and repair her relationship with her daughter. They joined forces to have an enjoyable time—but what they wound up doing is helping one another come to grips with terminal cancer and resolve the unfinished business in their lives.

Forty years ago, two women met on a basketball court and became close friends. Those women were Ann Bancroft and Jan Malcolm. That was long before Malcolm went on to serve as Minnesota Health Commissioner under three Minnesota governors and guide the state through the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also before Bancroft became the first woman to reach the North Pole by foot with dog sled and inspire people around the world through her polar expeditions. Over the years, Malcolm and Bancroft have supported each other through intense challenges, weathered personal loss and encouraged each other to follow their dreams. Listen back to a conversation MPR News host Angela Davis had with Ann Bancroft and Jan Malcolm as part of her Power Pairs series.Guests: Ann Bancroft is an adventurer, author and teacher. She was the first woman to reach the North Pole on foot with dog sleds with a group in 1986. She was also the first woman, with Norwegian adventurer Liv Arnesen, to ski across Antarctica. She's completed a number of other expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, inspiring school children and drawing attention to global warming. She's also the founder of the Ann Bancroft Foundation. Jan Malcolm retired as Minnesota's health commissioner at the end of 2022, after serving under Governor Tim Walz and guiding the state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was appointed as commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health in 2018 by Gov. Mark Dayton and also served in the role under Gov. Jesse Ventura.

Minnesota native. Earned a teaching degree from the University of Oregon and taught a short few years before joining a team to dogsled to the North Pole. As first known woman to travel across the ice to the top of the world, I made a promise to not only follow my dreams but create something bigger than my own personal ambitions. All my expeditions since have education with them - thus inspiring millions of kids. One focus always is helping girls and women find their voice and potential in whatever they do. This theme traveled as I became first women to ski to both poles, lead the first all women's expedition to the South Pole in 1992/93 - Lead a team of all women across Greenland 1992 and later cross Antarctica with Liv Arnesen. 2000/01. Many wonderful trips in between on rock and snow, or on water - frozen and liquid. I started the Ann Bancroft Foundation in Minnesota that gives small monetary grants to girls to try an experience to find courage to find their way in the world as strong and confident and engaged humans. Liv Arnesen and American polar explorer Ann Bancroft become the first women in history to sail and ski across Antarctica's landmass — completing a 94-day, 1,717-mile (2,747 km) trek. Liv have had to endure male screaming out “damn woman” as she overtakes them in the classic Birkebeiner cross-country ski race in Norway and when Liv and Ann pitched their 2001 Antarctic crossing expedition CEO's have reproached them for not looking strong enough. The arguments against women presence in Antarctica leads back to 1900s with inability of the weaker sex to surviving the hostile conditions. Modern doubts circle around women threatening the male culture with cat-fighting and sexual promiscuity. It's been a long struggle to prove that women can hold their own in polar regions why Liv and Ann's traverse over the Antarctica continent in 2000/2001 was so important. www.meetingexplorers.com

In the summer after graduating college, Natalie and Ann Raiho set off on the banks of the Minnesota River with the ultimate goal of reaching the Arctic waters of Canada's Hudson Bay in 90 days or less. Natalie writes all about their journey in her book HUDSON BAY BOUND, and is here today to chat with another history-making explorer, Ann Bancroft, who, along with Liv Arnesen, were the first two women to cross Antarctica. This conversation was recorded in October 2020. More on Hudson Bay Bound: Two Women, One Dog, Two Thousand Miles to the Arctic: z.umn.edu/hudsonbaybound. Have you heard the word dyslexia before? It's a term used to describe when people have a hard time learning to read. It's actually very common because reading is a fairly new skill that humans have developed. In this episode we do a deep dive on dyslexia. We'll look at how our brains have cobbled together the ability to read by re-purposing parts of the brain that evolved for other functions. And we’ll learn what scientists think might be going on in the brains of people with dyslexia when they learn to read. We also talk to Ann Bancroft, a Polar explorer and educator who also has dyslexia, about why getting lost can be fun. Plus we’ll hear a new Mystery Sound and find out if mice actually do love cheese in our Moment of Um. Sidney Poitier becomes first black male actor to win an Oscar. When Sidney Poitier became the first black man to win an Academy Award for best actor, it was not without controversy. Just for pecking him on the cheek as she presented him with the Oscar on April 13, 1964, actress Ann Bancroft was called scandalous in the U.S. Poitier won the award for his role in the movie Lilies of the Field. In the film, he played construction worker Homer Smith, a man who built a church for a group of nuns. After growing up in poverty in the Bahamas, Poitier moved to New York, only to have difficulty landing acting jobs due to his Bahaman accent. He finally played a doctor alongside Richard Widmark in the 1950 movie, No Way Out. His big break came five years later in The Blackboard Jungle, after which he built a career known for challenging American stereotypes of blacks. His first on-screen inter-racial kiss with actress Katharine Hepburn in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and his portrayal of a police detective in In the Heat of the Night, both in 1967, went against American conventions. So did recognizing blacks at the Oscars. It had been a long 25 years since Hattie McDaniel (the first African American to win an Oscar) had clinched best supporting actress in 1939 for her role in Gone with the Wind. Even after Poitier finally won an Oscar title without the word “supporting,” blacks had to wait 35 years to see Denzel Washington and Halle Berry win Oscars for best actor and best actress, respectively. That was 2002, the same year Poitier was given a lifetime achievement award at the Academy Awards. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys talk about how all across the world Bears are beginning to rise up against humans, two people encounter "Monster" at Lake Champlain, the after the break the guys discuss "The Third Man Factor". The Third Man factor or Third Man Effect refers to the reported situations where an unseen presence such as a "spirit" provides comfort or support during traumatic experiences. Sir Ernest Shackleton in his book South, described his belief that an incorporeal being joined him and two others during the final leg of their journey. Shackleton wrote, "during that long and racking march of thirty-six hours over the unnamed mountains and glaciers of South Georgia, it seemed to me often that we were four, not three."His admission resulted in other survivors of extreme hardship coming forward and sharing similar experiences. In recent years well-known adventurers like climber Reinhold Messner and polar explorers Peter Hillary and Ann Bancroft have reported the experience. One study of cases involving adventurers reported that the largest group involved climbers, with solo sailors and shipwreck survivors being the second most common group, followed by polar explorers.
