Host: Michal Charles aka MMC13 Guests: Alex & Julie   Early Days Podcast-group discussion In this episode of 'Early Days Podcast,' host Michal is joined by Alex and Julie to discuss the reactions from friends and family when they announce their decision to quit drinking, and how sometimes those can be more harmful than good. They delve into personal experiences, the many stigmas around addiction, and the importance and value in having support systems in recovery. This dialogue could be particularly beneficial to those who don't have a personal history with addiction, as it may shed some light on how to provide support to those who reach out for help.   About Alex: Alex started her journey towards recovery in 2023, and while the road is not always straight, and the journey not always linear,  she continually commits to sticking to it amidst an alcohol obsessed world.  A music, book, and film lover, she is thrilled to have found a network of incredible sober friends throughout her time on this journey. She welcomes any opportunity to share her own journey, listen to others, and help in any way possible. Alex was born and raised (and still resides!) in Brooklyn, New York, where she works as an HR Professional. She sings and records music with her husband in two bands: a rock band she has been a member of for over a decade, the other, a newer project with a more lo-fi sound. Music is her greatest joy and has saved her soul more times than she can count.   About Julie: Julie is in the early stages of her sobriety journey, having joined the I Am Sober community in 2022. After experiencing multiple slip-ups, she found Sobertown's Zoom meetings, which provided her with support and tools necessary to maintain sobriety. Joining the Sobertown community has made the biggest difference due to the connection and validation she received from others going through similar struggles. Julie is excited to celebrate her one-year milestone in April 2025 and is passionate about giving back to the sober community, particularly through hosting Sobertown's ladies meetings. She believes that recovery is not linear and that a slip-up is not a setback but an opportunity to learn and continue on the path of recovery. Julie hopes to break the stigma and stereotypes surrounding addiction --  "We recover out loud so others don't die in silence." Originally from Southern California, Julie relocated to Central Pennsylvania in 2024 for her career. An avid hiker, she finds peace and spiritual connection in nature. In her downtime, Julie enjoys watching and discussing thriller and horror films, indoor gardening, and spoiling her senior kitty.   About Michal: Michal is an American podcaster and sober warrior who believes every recovery journey is as unique as the individual traveling it. Episode 518 – Your Idea of Good Evolves   Today we have Ashley. She's 25 years old from Spokane, WA and took her last drink on September 22nd, 2024.   Sponsor for this episode:   Better Help – 10% off your first month   This February, we are doing our first ever alcohol-free singer-songwriter course. In this six-week course you're going to connect with other sober musicians. You're going to improve your songwriting skills and hear from professional musicians. We will all write our own songs which we will share in the last week.   Registration is open for Recovery Elevator's first ever Men's Retreat will be April 5th through the 12th in Costa Rica.   [03:17] Thoughts from Paul:   Quoting Yung Pueblo, “Maturity is knowing that endings are a part of life. Jobs change, who you hang out with changes. Your idea of what is ‘good' evolves. An ending is a sign that you're opening a new chapter.”   There's a saying in this space that we stop maturing when our drinking becomes problematic. When alcohol begins to take over every aspect in our lives, our maturation is halted. Our idea of what is good evolves, but it doesn't evolve when we keep labeling booze as a good time.   Start using your brain to build your alcohol-free life in your mind. Eventually the universe will line up to make this happen, in fact, it's already happening. Think about the podcast you are listening to and how you got here. You're probably way further down this journey than you think.   [07:30] Paul introduces Ashley:   Ashley lives in Spokane, WA and works for a cleaning business. She enjoys crafting and journaling. Right now she is working on a scrapbook that looks like a Vision Board for 2025.   Ashley says she didn't really drink until college. When COVID shut everything down in 2020, Ashley was a junior in college and had just turned 21. She was living alone in a studio apartment and got to drink the way that she wanted to drink. When she noticed her drinking ramp up, she started to cut it back a bit.   After the shutdown was lifted, Ashley started bartending and didn't want to drink much on the job. That shifted a bit when she changed jobs and was working at a brewery where she and other coworkers would take drinking breaks while on their shift. Over time she recognized she was drinking too much and tried to moderate at least at work.   Ashley began to recognize that she didn't like that she was becoming very cynical while at this job. She talked to her partner about it, and he encouraged her to leave the job since it was affecting her so negatively. Ashley took the time off after quitting to do whatever she wanted and saw her drinking increase. She would hide her bottles so her partner wouldn't see how much she was actually drinking.   On the day of her last drink, Ashley and her partner had gone out and bar hopped. Ashley ended up blacking out and when she woke up, her partner was gone. She could not remember most of the night before and wasn't sure  what was going to happen next but knew she could no longer drink.   Ashley says the first two days were full of anxiety, but she just focused on one day at a time. She distracted herself with movies and video games. At therapy that week, she shared where she was with alcohol for the first time. Her therapist recommended the I Am Sober app which Ashley found very helpful. The cravings have decreased over the last few months and when they do happen, she plays the tape forward. Since quitting Ashley says her depression and anxiety has reduced dramatically. She has more energy, and her routines have become more consistent. Ashley is happy to find she can still socialize even without alcohol.   Ashley's parting piece of guidance: it is important for you to look inside yourself and see if it's actually something you want to do or if you're afraid to do it, maybe look into why you're afraid to do it.   Recovery Elevator Rule 22, let's lighten up, not take ourselves too seriously. Episode 446 – Go Easy on Yourself   Today we have Jonathan. He is 44 from Grand Forks, ND and took his last drink on May 17th, 2008.   Our six week Ditching the Booze mindfulness course starts Monday, September 18th and meets on Monday nights at 8:30 PM EST. This course is included with Café RE membership and is for Café RE members only.   Cafe RE - Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee.   We have partnered with Sober Link. You can find some tips and can sign up for a $50 off promo code.   [02:24] Highlights from Paul:   Straying from the sometimes-complex intros, Paul urges us to go easy on ourselves.   Despite all of our agricultural, scientific, and technological innovations, this is the hardest time it has ever been to be a human being. Rates of addiction and overdoses are soaring. Dr. Gabor Mate's book The Myth of Normal shows how our out of balance culture is creating mountains of unrest and disease.   Life is already a challenge and living in the modern world without substances to slow down the prefrontal cortex, it is even harder.   Go easy on yourself. Life is going to kick your ass at some time or another. Don't let that Bruno voice in the head make it any worse. Once that voice starts chirping about how you should have done XYZ differently, and how you're doomed for eternity, locate the true you and tell that Bruno voice to step aside, and you'll take it from here.   Be sure to start your day with words of compassion. Compassion for you, those nearest to you, the animals outside your window, and for those who are still struggling with alcohol.     Better Help:  www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored   [8:11]: Kris introduces Jonathan:   Jonathan is 44 years old and lives in Grand Forks, ND. He has worked in the restaurant industry most of his life and is also the managing director for the office of Recovery Reinvented. For fun Jonathan likes to spend time outside and cook. He is married and they have three daughters.   Jonathan says he had a good childhood with a lot of parental support. He feels like his exposure to alcohol as a teenager was normal. He says drinking never got in the way of his grades or playing sports. While in college Jonathan started working in bars and restaurants where drinking is part of the culture. His drinking increased and he ended up dropping out of school.   Jonathan realized early on that his drinking looked different from his peers. He witnessed others being able to stop with a few drinks after work whereas he would just go to the next bar or go home and keep the party going. He didn't think he was drinking to mask anything, so he didn't have a problem, he just really enjoyed drinking.   While Jonathan was doing well in his career, his drinking increased. He opened his first restaurant when he was 27 and was very successful. People were starting to tell Jonathan that he should cut back but he struggled to do so.   Jonathan had a meeting with his business partner and his father where he was told that things needed to change, or the partnership was going to end. This is what it took for Jonathan to seek treatment. He went to inpatient treatment for 30 days. While there he went from feeling like this was a temporary change to realizing that he needed it to be long term. He started seeing the similarities with others instead of the differences.   Jonathan completed 30 days and continued with outpatient treatment. He made the decision to be transparent with his recovery. He feels that helped him stay accountable and sober.   Jonathan's favorite resource in recovery: I Am Sober app (he likes seeing how much money he has saved).   Jonathan's parting piece of guidance: “Everything that is good in my life today is in my life because alcohol is not.”   Recovery Reinvented   Instagram - We regularly feature content here – often with goats! Where to begin . . . This alcohol-free journey has been one of the most significant and important experiences I've had in my life. While my entry-point was seemingly random (that said, I don't believe in coincidence), the process has taken on a power and impacted my path forward in ways that I could never have imagined this time last year.  I was fortunate to come across the I Am Sober community and have been afforded access to an incredible ecosystem that has contributed greatly to my ongoing evolution. I now am committed to similarly serve others as I have and continue to be served.  I accepted and allowed my relationship with alcohol to rob me of health, wealth, vitality, clarity, focus, and life. While I can't change the impact of the choices I've made in the past, my commitment to being a part of assisting others in their respective relationships with substances is certain. Today I am officially 100 days sober! I seriously can't even believe that I have this huge milestone to celebrate. It seems like just yesterday that I was hitting the three-week mark. I've been wanting to record this episode for a while now, because there are truly so many things I've learned about alcohol (and sobriety for that matter) since I stopped drinking. If any of this resonates with you, maybe consider taking a month, week, or even a day without consuming alcohol. If you choose to do so, let me know how it goes! When I first stopped drinking, I re-downloaded the app "I Am Sober" to start tracking my sobriety journey and ensure that I had something to hold myself accountable. Each day when you make a pledge to refrain from alcohol, the app gives you a fun little quote for motivation. On January 1st, the prompt I received was, "Not all storms come to disrupt your life. Some come to clear your path." That quote has stuck with me over the past 100 days. I truly feel that the chaotic shit storm that was New Year Eve cleared a path to a new chapter of life. I'll be honest, whenever I used to hear my sober friends talking about how quitting drinking was the best choice they ever made, I used to think they were exaggerating. Now, I can confidently tell you that, if they feel the same way I do, they were 100% serious. I truly feel that I am a better friend, daughter, sister, and person without alcohol. Without a doubt, quitting drinking was the best decision I ever made for myself. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoescurletis/support

Ready to quit drinking but not sure where to start? Don't want to go to AA? Think you can quit on your own? You can! Cold Turkey. You are a gray area drinker who can take back control of your life and stop drinking before big problems arise. You know alcohol is not serving you and has become a problem. Your life will be more fulfilling, happier and peaceful without alcohol dragging you down.   Megan Collard lives on the Jersey shore with her family and goldendoodle, (sometimes referred to as her favorite daughter), Penny. She runs a small, real estate company with her husband and is raising 4 school-aged kids. Megan was a “gray area” drinker--a regular drinker who became a heavier, problem drinker overtime but was very much functioning in all ways.  Megan did not use a traditional method to stop drinking--she woke up one day and decided she was tired of how alcohol was making her feel. She knew it was keeping her from living her best life so she quit; cold turkey (as the saying goes).  Megan has been alcohol free for over two and a half years. Yet, in November of 1989, when she was 12 years old, everything changed over night. The Berlin Wall came down and with that her country dissolved. Simultaneously her parents got divorced, she faced unwanted changes of her body, (puberty), and in school nobody knew what to teach and who should teach it. Longing for stability in her life, she started to control food and her weight. Later she discovered alcohol as a way to cope with anxiety, depression, and everything else. For anyone struggling with self-harm or watching a loved one struggle with it, it is an excruciating experience. As a parent, witnessing those self-inflicted wounds on my child's body left me distraught and guilt-ridden. I didn't know how to stop it. I felt broken and powerless. A year ago, I couldn't imaging getting to this day. In this episode we are celebrating Linny's one-year anniversary free from self-harm! Linny shares about what went into accomplishing this huge milestone and reflects on the experience of going through residential mental health treatment. We talk about the benefits of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and how it has helped Linny establish healthy coping strategies for anxiety, depression and thoughts of self-harm. You can find our more information about DBT here: https://bit.ly/Dialectical_Behavioral_Therapy One of the resources that has been incredibly helpful for Linny is the I Am Sober app. It's a free app that tracks days clean or sober, provides motivation and helps to build healthy habits. My brother Ryan and I were heavy drinkers for many years and now we have both quit. Ryan's struggle was dramatic at times, including an intervention, two stints in residential rehab, and consistent participation in Alcoholics Anonymous. My drinking seemed more normal and socially acceptable, but after seeing what Ryan had gone through, I knew where I was headed if I did not make a change. In this conversation, we talk about our drinking histories, the ups and downs of quitting, and our hopes for the future. We are not professionals and we do not offer advice. We offer only our experience and encouragement. If you are considering quitting and want to talk about it, please feel free to contact us. We are happy to talk. https://www.aa.org/ (Alcoholics Anonymous) https://www.reddit.com/r/stopdrinking/ (/r/stopdrinking) https://iamsober.com/ (I Am Sober for Android and iOS)
