Raw Talks With Vamshi Kurapati - Telugu Business Podcast

In this podcast episode, we explore the fascinating and often misunderstood world of psychiatry, mental health, and brain function, with our esteemed guest, Dr. Virinchi Sharma, a renowned psychiatrist and Director of Manasa Psychiatric Hospital in Hyderabad. Dr. Sharma's extensive experience as a consultant psychiatrist at institutions like BITS Pilani and Sleep Therapeutics, combined with his role as an Associate Professor and TEDx speaker, allows him to bring a wealth of knowledge to this conversation. With a background that includes speaking at over 1,000 television debates and delivering keynote addresses at prestigious conferences, Dr. Sharma is exceptionally equipped to guide us through some of the most pressing mental health issues of our time. We begin by delving into the world of psychiatric hospitals, a subject that often sparks curiosity but is widely misunderstood. Dr. Sharma explains the key differences between outpatient and inpatient psychiatric care. Outpatient services, he notes, provide therapeutic consultation and treatment without requiring a patient to stay overnight, whereas inpatient facilities offer more intensive, 24-hour care for individuals needing close monitoring and treatment. He emphasizes the need for mental health treatment to be normalized and explains when inpatient care is necessary for conditions like severe depression, schizophrenia, or when someone is at risk of self-harm. The conversation then moves into the importance of language in psychiatry. Dr. Sharma highlights how the words used during consultations can either create a safe, supportive environment or alienate a patient. He talks about the importance of being mindful, avoiding terms that may seem judgmental or stigmatizing, and the role that compassionate communication plays in mental health care. He also touches on a common question—whether everyone needs a psychologist. According to Dr. Sharma, while not everyone requires continuous psychological care, we could all benefit from a mental health check-up, just like we do with physical health. He stresses the importance of seeing mental health support as preventive care rather than a last resort. One of the most striking parts of our discussion revolves around technology addiction, a modern-day epidemic. Dr. Sharma provides insights into why so many people are glued to their phones and screens, describing it as a symptom of a deeper neurological issue. He explains how the human brain, particularly the "monkey brain" that deals with impulse control, struggles to adapt to the overwhelming stimuli of today's digital world. He references studies that suggest over-reliance on gadgets may even be shrinking certain parts of our brains, particularly those responsible for attention and impulse regulation. This leads to an exploration of our increasing need for dopamine—our brain's reward chemical. Dr. Sharma breaks down why we're constantly seeking multiple sources of stimulation, such as binge-watching shows while scrolling through social media. He explains how our dopamine system, designed to reward healthy behaviors, is being hijacked by fast-paced digital experiences, leading to an addiction-like cycle of craving and dissatisfaction. A relatable example is given through Dr. Sharma's analysis of VK's experience, where working non-stop for 15 days led to extreme boredom on a rest day. This, according to Dr. Sharma, can be attributed to excessive dopamine spikes that make periods of downtime feel unfulfilling. Wrapping up the episode, Dr. Sharma leaves us with valuable takeaways on how to protect our brains, manage our mental health, and stay resilient in the face of modern-day challenges. From stress management to understanding how dopamine shapes our behavior, this podcast is a comprehensive exploration of the mind, brought to life by the expertise and wisdom of Dr. Virinchi Sharma.

Addiction to substances like nicotine, alcohol, and drugs can be incredibly difficult to overcome. These addictions harm our mental and physical health and deplete essential nutrients in the body, particularly NAD. NAD is a crucial coenzyme involved in over 500 different chemical reactions in the body. It plays a vital role in energy production, DNA repair, and maintaining proper cellular functioning. However, addiction to substances like nicotine, alcohol, and drugs can significantly deplete NAD levels in the body. Symptoms of NAD deficiency include fatigue, muscle soreness, weight gain, difficulty sleeping and concentrating, brain fog, and decreased stamina. These symptoms can make it even harder for someone to overcome an addiction. To combat NAD deficiency, consider taking vitamin B3, also known as niacin. Niacin helps increase NAD levels in the body, improving energy, helping to reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and aiding in addiction recovery. Some people may experience a flushing response on their skin when taking niacin, which can be uncomfortable. In this case, no-flush niacin can be used instead. In addition to supplementing with niacin, there are other ways to increase NAD levels in the body, such as intermittent fasting, following a healthy ketogenic diet, and regular exercise. These lifestyle changes can support addiction recovery and overall well-being. In some cases, clinics offer IV therapy for NAD to help with addiction recovery. However, this can be expensive and not accessible to everyone. DATA: https://www.jci.org/articles/view/27160

Whether going out on the town for dinner, a movie, live music, or just catching up with friends – you know that none of it requires alcohol. Sober in the City shows attendees exactly what an alcohol free gathering feels like -- MAGIC.   Susie:   Former drinker of White Zin, Chardonnay, Red Blends and Sauvignon Blanc.  Currently standing over here, waving my arms.  Look!  Alcohol Free!  It's super fun over here! She now collaborates with others to create experiences where connections are virtually guaranteed.  You'll probably forget alcohol wasn't invited after attending a Sober in the City experience but will likely walk away feeling empowered in your alcohol free lifestyle! Host: Viv, aka Sober_iThrive Guest: Ana Lozano Harmon A Family's Addiction: A Journey Through a Mother's Heart, written by Ana Lozano Harmon, is a powerful memoir that follows a mother as she deals with her son's addiction. Through her experiences, Ana discovers the struggles as a minority from an immigrant background and she becomes an advocate for change. With unwavering love and determination, Ana shows the power of resilience and survival. This inspiring and heartwarming story is a reminder that a whole family can support one another with faith that can help conquer even the most difficult of challenges. Addiction rushes into a person's life like a Tsunami. Slow at first, seemingly out of sight, trickling in, until it crashes ashore— leaving devastation in its wake. Drugs and alcohol can wreak havoc, destroying everything—and everyone in its path. Yet, Ana Lozano Harmon, her son Anthony, and her entire family endured the pain, tears, and tragedy to tell the tale. This is the story of survival, of drug and alcohol addiction, through the strength of a mother's love and with a family who pulled together unconditionally—to save one of their own. A mother's love for a child is everlasting, yet, facing addiction, can place a soul-wrenching strain on a mother's heart, pushing it beyond normal limits. Ana's situation became desperate in trying to help her son. Yet each day, the pain pushed her closer to the edge, almost beyond reach. Maybe you are here in desperate need, filled with despair, and a driving desire to understand what to do?… Is this you? About the author, Ana Lozano Harmon enjoys family gatherings at home believes togetherness keeps unity within the family circle. A Family's Addiction is her first published book. Ana is retired from NBC/Telemundo TV stations where she took pride in helping fellow co-workers enjoy their time with family. Ana says, “I never believed that I could be an author of a book, but having faith and praying before starting each page, gave me the inspiration to share my life, pain, hardship, and triumph within my journey. And the best of all is this book allowed me to share with you.” This book is dedicated to all those suffering addicts, recovered addicts, parents of addicts.     Viv, aka Sober_iThrive, is a Certified Addictions Recovery Coach My Sober Recovery Story #252  If you have any questions or You would like to book a FREE 30-minute consultation with me, you can visit my website https://www.soberithrive.org I'm Certified in Addiction Recovery Coaching and Life Coaching:    • Life Coaching Essentials, Work/Life Balance  • Co-creating a New Sober Lifestyle  • Addiction(s) Recovery  • Neuroscience of Brain Function & Joyful Recovery  • Roots of Addiction(s)  • Alcohol/Drugs and their Effects  • Right Thinking in Recovery  • Family Issues in Recovery     And so much more…   My communities are:   • Sobertownpodcast.com   • I Am Sober Community (IAS) - @Sober_iThrive  • Sobertown Facebook Group   • “Valiants We Thrive” – Sober Women Telegram Group  • Instagram: @Sober_i_Thrive  www.soberithrive.org (https://www.soberithrive.org/) Certified and Licensed Addiction and Recovery Professional Online Sober Coaching for all of your addiction and recovery needs by a Internationally Certified and Licensed Sober Coach & Life Coach   No Sippy No Slippy. I am an award-winning journalist and bestselling author, turned psychotherapist. For more than 25 years, I worked at Maclean's magazine, Canada's newsweekly, where I was perhaps best known as the chief architect of the Maclean's university rankings—and for a series of columns on modern life, including “The Boy Can't Sleep,” anthologized in Carol Shields' Dropped Threads II. Drink book by Ann Dowsett Johnston Winner of seven National Magazine Awards, I am also the recipient of a Southam Journalism Fellowship and the Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy. It was for the latter that I prepared a 14-part series on Women and Alcohol in the Toronto Star, looking at the closing gender gap on risky drinking. In 2013, I wrote Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol, a book named one of the top 10 of the year by the Washington Post. Part memoir, part journalistic exploration, the book exposes the “pinking” of the alcohol industry. Says Gabor Mate: “The writing is gripping and vivid, the voice personal, the research exacting, the stories revealing if sometimes heartbreaking, the conclusions essential. A triumphant life, a triumphant book.” ‍ Since the publication of Drink, I have worked hard to destigmatize mental health and addiction, earning an honorary Doctor of Laws from Queen's University for my efforts. I am also the recipient of a Transforming Lives award from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the American Research Society on Addiction's Media Award, plus the T. A. Sweet Award from the Ontario Psychiatric Association for helping address stigma related to mental health and addiction. ‍ In 2017, I decided to follow my heart, applying to the Master's of Social Work program at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. What this represents is the fulfillment of a decades-old dream: to become a psychotherapist. During my internships, I worked at the Jean Tweed Centre in Toronto, and with psychotherapist Jan Winhall at Focusing on Borden.Writing remains a significant part of my life, and I am hard at work on my second book. In my spare time, I am a white-water reader, a lover of nature, and a traveller. Runningandyoga sat down with Viv to tell her amazing Recovery Story!   Runningandyoga grew up in East Germany with an understanding that she would never be able to travel the world, choose her professional career, or speak her thoughts freely. Yet, in November of 1989, when she was 12 years old, everything changed over night. The Berlin Wall came down and with that her country dissolved. Simultaneously her parents got divorced, she faced unwanted changes of her body, (puberty), and in school nobody knew what to teach and who should teach it. Longing for stability in her life, she started to control food and her weight. Later she discovered alcohol as a way to cope with anxiety, depression, and everything else. After failed attempts to moderate her alcohol consumption, she fearfully and begrudgingly tried sobriety in January 2022. Ashlee (IAS @AshlsHere) shares her sober recovery story with Viv (IAS @Sober_i_Thrive)   Ashlee's childhood and early twenties were an overall happy time that set a solid foundation to stand on going into adulthood. She had a small taste of life's unpredictability in those formative years, but was able to persevere with the support of her loved ones. Once she graduated college and began working full time as a special education teacher, her drinking began to increase as all social activities she was engaging in involved alcohol. In her late twenties, a couple of life altering events would send her into a tailspin. Although Ashlee had a wonderful upbringing, she was lacking the social emotional skills required to navigate through these stressful scenarios. Not knowing where to turn, her drinking habits became progressively more and more problematic. Ashlee walks you through how dark and lonely her life became, and what measures she took to regain ownership of her life and start following her bliss. She also shares pieces of her experience having a partner who is also in recovery and how she and her husband have found success in their own individual journeys while simultaneously supporting each other.     If you have any questions or would like to book a FREE consultation with me, you may contact me directly at viv@soberithrive.org or DM me @Sober_i_Thrive on Instagram.   Some of the topics discussed in Recovery Coaching include but are not limited to:   Life Coaching Co-creating a New Sober Lifestyle Addiction(s) Recovery Neuroscience of Joyful Recovery Roots of Addiction(s) Alcohol/Drugs and its Effects Right Thinking in Recovery Family Issues in Recovery   And so much more…   My communities are:    Sobertownpodcast.com I Am Sober Community (IAS) - @Sober_i_Thrive Sobertown Facebook Group “Valiants We Thrive” – Sober Women Telegram Group Instagram: @Sober_i_Thrive   No Sippy No Slippy. Welcome to a How To Cut It ‘Classic Rerun' with Niall Colgan. Delving deep into our extensive podcast libraries, our Classic Rerun's bring you some of our most popular episodes since we launched back in 2017. Originally published in September 2019, this episode with Niall is our second highest download of all time. And for good reason! Niall's story he shared then was what I described as a 'podcast blockbuster'.So be prepared. You're about to hear is one of the most powerful, emotional and hard hitting stories that we have ever brought you over the last five and half years! An incredible comeback story, you'll hear how Niall seemed to have it all. Enjoying great success, before the cracks began to show, I guarantee that you'll all be hanging on every last word Niall shared with us back in 2019. In 2009 Niall opened Niall Colgan Hairdressing, and in his very own words said,  "I was flying by the seat of my pants, and with no clue on how to be a leader"! With this pressure he ended up having a total breakdown in October 2013, followed by a suicide attempt when it appeared that he had lost both his business and young family. Hitting rock bottom was the turning point for Niall to rebuild his life. At the time of recording in 2019 he was 6 years into sobriety and with his partner Melie by his side and two young sons, Niall has gone from strength to strength. Niall is truly inspirational. Listen in to hear his words on recovery from the depths of being rock bottom, and how he's rebuilt both his life and thriving salon business out of a hard working ethic and huge passion for hair.     A podcast produced by How To Cut It Podcasts Thanks for Listening To share your thoughts: Leave a note in the comment section below. In this episode we chat to Rosie, a wonderful young woman from the UK who now lives in New Zealand happily drug and alcohol free! We're Sharon and Ben, two normal people who decided to give up alcohol to see how our lives would change. We're not medical experts but we are expert ex-drinkers, and our podcast brings people together who are on their own alcohol-free journeys by celebrating just how wonderful life without booze can be! Rosie got in touch with us because she's listened to the podcast for a long time and wanted to talk about something we haven't talked about much before - the link between alcohol and eating disorders. Rosie would under-eat and over-exercise in the week to essentially save up calories for her alcohol intake at weekends, and to maintain the "party girl" figure she thought she needed to have to fit in. Rosie talks to us about the pressure she felt to look a certain way, and the detrimental affects that this had on both her mental and physical health. Rosie is also an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and talks to us about her experiences of attending meetings and being an active part of the AA community which has been overwhelmingly positive. As a Buddhist, she talks to us about how Buddhism and AA have overlapping principles and how both now provide her with the connection she needs to remain drug and alcohol free. We are so glad that Rosie got in touch with us, and we're so grateful for her honesty. If you'd like to follow Rosie on social media, search for "Sober Not Boring" on Instagram. If you are in the UK, you can find links to local support for eating disorders on the NHS website - or there are lots of useful links on this page of the MIND website. --- Get In Touch: Of course, you can always get in touch with us (publicly or privately) on our socials - @alcoholfreepod on Instagram, or search for "Over The Influence" on Facebook.
