In 2021, we are committed to making this the year we make it trendy to nourish our bodies instead of starve them. For the majority of your clients they have been told throughout their entire lives that in order to reach their health goals they have to eat less, remove different food groups, or restrict their eating habits in one way or another. I don't know about you, but I am SO DONE with this being the narrative…because as health coaches you and I both know that true transformation comes from nourishing our bodies inside and out! As a coach, your job is to teach your clients how to understand their bodies on a deeper level and nourish them in the way that they need to be nourished. However, problems arise when these changes go against everything your clients have been told to do ever before. Because this goes against what they've been told is “correct”, we will see them face fears, resistance, and even full on avoidance towards nourishing their bodies. Your job as a coach is to dig deeper with them and guide them to understand why nourishing their bodies is the answer, and how to go about doing so with confidence! Setting goals can feel like an extremely overwhelming task, especially when we have a history of not following through on the goals we set out for ourselves. Coming out of 2020, I think it is safe to say that each and every one of us faced road blocks to accomplishing our goals that we truly could have never expected or planned for. Moving into the new year, we can feel a great deal of pressure that because last year was such a mess, this is the year we have to “make up” for what we feel we lost out on. However, this can lead us down the path of setting goals that scare us more than motivate us, and that we wind up giving up on before we give them a real start. Emotional eating is a phenomenon that nearly every person has experienced at some point in their life. Be it that one time in high school after a bad break up, or if it is something your client turns too often, this is an type of food emotionality that is foreign to few. When we discuss emotional eating it is important to note that we are not focused on the eating itself nor the foods being consumed, but rather the emotional experience that is happening during it. In today's episode Emma discusses emotional eating and teaches you the tools and steps needed to address and heal your client's struggle with emotional eating. Episode Overview (The Steps) 1. Understand (as the coach) what emotional eating is about. The feeling not the food. 2. Help your client identify the root emotions and feelings causing their emotional eating. This includes the emotions they feel that lead them to emotionally eat AND the result they are hoping the eating will help them to achieve. 3. Fix the feeling & find alternative healing methods not related to food. 4. Address the difference between emotional eating urges and hunger cues. 5. Promote intentional eating in order to keep the reasons for eating positive always. Can you be a mind body coach and still talk about weight loss? Can you care about your clients relationship with food while having them track macros? Can you be a body positive coach while helping your clients change their bodies? YES YOU CAN! Each of you have your own speciality, passions, and expertise that you use to help your clients. I often hear concerns about ones ability to become a mind-body coach because they fear that their promotion of weight loss, macros, and weightlifting will get in the way. There is a belief that in order to be a mind-body coach you have to be "all in", but the reality is that being a mind-body coach has less to do with the practices you use, and more to do with how your approach your clients transformation. As a mind body coach you care more about your clients mental & physical wellness, happiness, and transformation than a number on the scale or body fat %. (13:00) Being tired, sluggish, and drained all the time isn't actually normal. (16:30) Often as entrepreneurs we things it's normal to always be in that hustle mode, but that can actually be causing or exacerbating your exhaustion. (17:45) What signs a health coach should be looking out for that can indicate a further health concern might need to be checked out & should refer their clients out to a doctor. (19:55) As a health coach, one of the roles you hold is to be the point person who knows what direction to point your client in. That includes them going to talk with a doctor. (21:00) Stress, Diet, and Lifestyle are the top three things that we want to work on in order to overcome chronic fatigue. (25:05) There are so many resources out there to help you feel your best. Any step you take is better then not taking any. (25:40) Know your own body. A coach or doctor can give you answers, but nobody can be a better advocate for your own health than you. Healthcare is an investment, but would you rather pay now, or later when it may be do late? (27:35) Life is too short to feel suboptimal, so stop settling for not be feeling your best all the time. (6:05) It's our job, as a coach to help our clients realize that they are experience resistance and making excuses…and THEN dig deeper with them to figure out what is going on. (6:54) On of the biggest jobs that a coach has is just knowing how to ask the right questions. (8:30) When to start asking questions + how (9:00) When we start hearing surface level excuses, that is our opportunity to start digging deeper. (9:30) One of my favorite questions to ask is, “when you are facing this resistance, what are you feeling?” (11:35) Once we understand the beliefs & fears that lie underneath the resistance, we can help walk our client out of that. (12:57) Now that they understand their beliefs, we help them find the truth. (13:58) When we are working towards finding these truths, we want to make sure that we dial things back and focus on the small goals ahead & achievements that have been made. (16:30) When our clients are struggling to get results it goes back to this idea of resistance that they are having to the actions in front of them. We get to dig deep with them and figure out what is causing this resistance and help walk them out of it. (31:35) If you are feeling fears around starting this practice, I want you to start slow. Just the fact that you have listened to this point is huge. This fear often comes from beliefs we have been given that this is something bad, but I encourage you to work on releasing your beliefs and knowing that this is something positive for you and your life.
