#130: Why Doesn't Your Partner Get You? Understanding Personal Movies in Relationships

Have you ever wondered why the people close to you, especially your partner, don't understand where you're coming from?Today, we're diving into a topic that's at the core of many relationship struggles: our "personal movie" and the cognitive biases that can distort our perception of reality. If you've ever found yourself saying, "I can't understand why you believe or think the way you do," this episode is for you. Our personal movie—the narrative we hold inside our own minds—can feel absolutely true for us, but often it doesn't match up with the personal movies of those around us. This disconnect can lead to conflict, especially in our closest relationships. But don't worry, we've got your back. In this episode, we'll share insights and teachings straight out of our Better Love Club Monday night class. The Better Love Club is a place where we come together to learn, share, and practice the skills that lead to better relationships. It's an alternative to traditional couples counseling that has proven life-changing for countless individuals. To get a taste of what we discuss in the club, we're going to dive deep into the concept of personal movies. We'll explore common cognitive biases and how they shape our personal narratives. Just like scenes from a movie, there are parts of our own narrative that we replay over and over because they make us feel good. But there are also scenes we'd rather skip—moments that lead us to lash out or try to control our external environment.Understanding our own personal movies and recognizing that others have different movies playing in their minds is often a big "aha" moment. It can lead to greater empathy, better communication, and ultimately, stronger relationships. And here's the kicker: We often live in congruence with our personal movie. If we believe something is true within our narrative, our behavior aligns with that belief. This can turn into a horror movie quickly if we're not aware and mindful of our internal narratives. In this episode, we'll help you uncover these biases and learn how to rewrite your own movie for a more fulfilling, harmonious relationship. So, if you're struggling to understand your partner, or if you just can't seem to get on the same page, this episode is a must-listen.Ready to unravel the complexities of your personal movie? Sure, you may have a sense that emotional safety is important, valuable even, but let's dive deeper. We'll address its true essence—what it is, why it matters, and how you can cultivate it. Join us as we embark on a journey of self-assessment and understanding, discovering where you stand in the realm of emotional safety. Why does something as simple as talking about our problems become increasingly difficult over time? We invite you to recollect those early days when understanding flowed effortlessly and when unspoken connections transcended mere words. If you find yourself yearning for those moments and wondering where they have gone, rest assured you're not alone.Unraveling the complexity of sharing emotions, we examine the frustration that arises when one partner struggles to articulate their feelings, while the other desperately craves open communication. It is here that emotional safety emerges as a pivotal element. Without a deep sense of emotional safety, individuals retreat into silence, unwilling to reveal their true selves. No amount of pressure or coercion can breach this self-imposed barrier. But what events or circumstances could erode emotional safety within a relationship? We uncover the devastating effects of feeling shut down, dismissed, belittled, criticized, blamed, or ignored—often unintentionally. Our quest is to shed light on these patterns that compromise emotional safety, hindering the collective ability to navigate challenges and co-create a thriving partnership.Don't let another moment slip away. In this episode, we discuss how to rebuild trust after a breach and how the process looks different for each unique situation. We start by discussing what betrayal looks like in a relationship and why it's so damaging. We talk about the power dynamics of relationships, why forgiveness isn't always possible, and the feeling of being violated when one partner betrays another. We focus on communication as a tool for recovery and why it's important for both parties to understand their roles in the process of rebuilding trust. We also talk about how understanding your own trauma can help you work through the difficulties associated with forgiveness and recovery from betrayal. We share tangible steps that couples can take towards rebuilding trust - these include setting boundaries, creating space for vulnerability, and understanding your motives as you move forward together. Finally, we look at ways to identify patterns in your relationship that may lead to future betrayals- this includes exploring personal biases and addressing them openly with your partner. #107: The 6 Pillars You Need To Save Your Relationship (Part Two)

This week in the Love Shack is actually part two of a series where we share the six pillars you need to know to become masterful at love and relationships. We discussed foundations, emotional weightlifting, and communication in the first part. In this episode, we'll discuss the last three pillars: agreements, play and novelty, and intimacy.  Agreements are simple and clear contracts that you make with your partner, such as how often you'll check in with each other, what kind of relationships you both want to have outside of the primary relationship, and even which chores everyone is responsible for. When agreements are made transparently and openly, they invite collaboration and mutual respect into the relationship. Play and novelty are essential parts of any relationship. It's the only way we can refuel ourselves, especially when we're going through a challenging time in our relationship. This means that you should make sure to pursue activities together, be it in the form of a date night or just playing board games at home on a Saturday afternoon. It's also important to surprise each other every now and then with spontaneous adventures and introduce new ideas and experiences into the relationship. The last pillar of a successful relationship is sex and intimacy. Sex is an essential part of our romantic relationships, but sometimes not being masterful at the other pillars can get in the way of having a healthy sex life. Intimacy is about opening up to each other and sharing your true feelings without fear of judgment or rejection. It's also about being vulnerable in front of your partner and allowing them to see you as your most authentic self. When we practice genuine intimacy, we learn to trust each other completely and form a deeper bond. By understanding and committing to these six pillars, you will become a masterful lover and create a meaningful, lasting relationship that is filled with joy and passion. Important Links:• Learn more about The Better Love Club http://thebetterloveclub.com/• Get your copy of my brand new book Feeling Like Your Marriage Is Dead? http://lifetimeoflove.me/• Want to learn how to stop a fight in 20-seconds or less? Have you ever wondered WHY we do what we do in our relationships?Like, have you ever been curious about why we are drawn to fall in love with certain people and are so turned off by others? In my work over the past decade, I have gotten the privilege of seeing a person discover their relationship patterns. It's a connecting of the dots so to speak that always connects back to a person's beliefs about themselves. The compelling drive to understand our partners at times can bump right up against making us obsessed and crazy. But the truth is, making sense of ourselves is a huge and ongoing conversation when it comes to love and relationship, and it's the key to being able to understand anyone else.Understanding ourselves and the people we love creates a stream of daunting and never-ending WHY questions that we want answers to! We just KNOW if we can find the answers we are looking for, we can finally eliminate our problems, and uncover the solutions we long for. This experience within us is human and universal. So much so, Carl Jung along with a group of followers developed what is now known as Archetypal Psychology. When exploring archetypes, our psyche can be explored through imagination and metaphors instead of using hard-to-understand words to describe what we know and feel internally. As Jung stated “Metaphoric images are our first unlearned language. Imagery is also timeless and eternal. Which provides the poetic basis of mind, making possible communication between all people and all things by means of metaphors.”This week in the Love Shack, Tom and Staci are very excited to have, Claudia Monacelli as a guest. Claudia has quite an extensive background and education. She is a published author, interpreter, professor, international liaison officer, voice trainer, psychic medium, medical intuitive, energy healer, hypnotherapist, consultant for both the Italian and U.S. governments on topics ranging from educational policies to cybersecurity and in addition her research includes sociolinguistics and archetypal psychology.Claudia, an Archetypal Psychologist, will be giving you a private experience of the power Archetypes can play in our relationships by sharing Tom and Staci's archetypes both as individuals and as a couple! This is going to be super helpful in exploring how understanding yourself and your partner is the key to rescuing your relationship. This episode is sure to be insightful, and filled with insights into why we do what we do…and I am sure some shocking surprises for all.Important Links:Learn more about Claudia here: https://www.claudiamonacelli.com/Want to learn how to stop a fight in 20-seconds or less?
