I'm baaaaaackkkk (with two new best friends) ... You heard that right, The Photographer's Podcast is BACK! But before we get into it, I want to thank you for being here, for allowing me this season of rest as I adjust to this new mom life. I'd be lying if I said I was actually adjusted by now. This is a process that's gonna take time, and I'm enjoying the freedom and flexibility I have as a photographer to take it all in without having to rush back into work. So, thank you. Being a photographer who's in control of their own schedule, flexibility and freedom, is truly a gift. And I don't take that lightly. I wanted to properly kick things off by welcoming TPP alumni Claudia Segui to the podcast! Claudia is an incredible wedding photographer originally from Cuba who's currently living in South Florida. She is a mom of two, a wife, an inspiring artist and a hilarious, welcoming and talented photographer. Claudia never imagined she would become a photographer. She spent most days in the courtroom working as a stenographer. But when she found herself going through a tough time, feeling stressed out about her day job, her husband suggested photography as a release. After receiving a camera as a christmas gift, she was hooked, until she tried to use it… “I thought the camera was broken, I was like… it has to be, I can't be that bad.” Then Claudia joined The Photographer's Path… and everything changed. Today, she's sharing exactly how much that Christmas gift changed her life. Claudia is a perfect example of what happens when you follow your inspiration. In this episode, she talks about: ➡️ How she booked her first wedding of 2024 in Hawaii ➡️ What she does to stand out as a photographer ➡️ How she breaks the ice with new clients to ensure a smooth wedding day ➡️ What she did to find her niche and style ➡️ Advice for aspiring photographers, and so much more... Most photographers at one point or another have been hit with the dreaded question… “Hey, do you think you could send me the raw files from our shoot?!” It's like a dagger in every photographer's heart… We're immediately plagued with questions like… Did they hate the photos? Did they hate the editing? Did they hate the colors?! Do they hate ME?! It's enough to make us spiral out of control. But it doesn't have to be like that. I've experienced this question several times throughout my career and I've happily given clients my raw files, and I've happily NOT given clients my raw files. It's a complicated question with so much to unpack, and it's something many of my students in The Photographer's Path have asked me about. So today I'm sharing my insight with you… Inside the episode you'll find: Examples of what you can say when a client asks this question What this question really means about you as a photographer Advice on how to clearly communicate with your clients Tips on how to prevent this from happening again I've also got some big news I'm sharing in the episode as well News that involves our new social media course and how we're gonna be approaching the podcast for the next two months... Get ready for the therapy session you didn't realize you needed today! I'm so excited to be sharing an Instagram Live I had last month with the amazing Jordan Stratton, an alumni from The Photographer's Path. Jordan is an incredible wedding photographer from Oklahoma and I can't wait for you to get to know her today. Jordan started TPP in Fall of 2022. A few weeks after joining, she quit her full-time job of 8 years to pursue photography. Talk about a MAJOR CHANGE right?! Some of you might be sweating just thinking about this transition. But Jordan didn't just blindly quit, she knew what she was doing. She quit her full-time job to work part-time while she actively pursued her photography dreams at the same time. But the best part?! She quit her part-time job and it only took her 8 months to become a FULL-TIME WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER! WHAT!?! Jordan's story is such an inspiration because it shows that there are so many different paths to take that can lead to your dreams and that not any one journey is the same as the next. You can make your dreams happen in a way that works for you. So, if photography is a dream in your heart, but quitting your day job seems out of reach, I hope this episode inspires you and shows you what's possible when you say yes!! If I could have told myself a year ago that today I'd be pregnant with 2 biscuits, welcoming an incredible new group of students into TPP, and sitting on my deck outside my cabin in Big Sur on MY BABYMOON, I'd have burst into tears. It's all I wanted, you know? And it is STILL what I want. I'm so grateful, and so thankful, and so looking forward to what life has in store coming up. But, guess what? As it happens, I'm burned out. Fulfilled? 10000% Yesssss. But exhausted and burned out? Yusssss. Which is why Dustin and I are in Big Sur right now for a little babymoon and a little refresher, and I feel lighter already. As you read this, I'm probably eating a donut, sitting on the redwood deck, listening to the birds enjoying a crisp, quiet morning. Or maybe we're having dinner on the cliffs, watching the sunset. Or maybe I'm zoning out listening to the sound of the dirt under our feet on hikes and the birds in the trees… whatever it is I'm taking a breath. I'm letting myself take a break and let nature fill me back up. Because that's what we have to do sometimes. Which is why this week I thought it was the perfect time to dive deep into burnout on this week's episode of the podcast. Because here's the thing: Even though we LOVE the work we do — burnout still exists. And we owe it to ourselves to know how to support ourselves, to connect back to the things we love, and to feel better. So on this episode, you'll hear: My own experience(s) — because there are several, trust me — with burnout How to zone in on your priorities (and align your life and business with them) A reminder that it's okay feel burnout, it doesn't mean photography isn't meant for you And, more than anything, I hope this episode reminds you that you owe yourself MORE than living a life where your tank is always on empty and your lights are always flickering. Because you do. Please don't sell yourself short of that, okay? Yes, you read that right. I dunno about you, but lately I've been feeling exhaused. I don't know if it's pregnancy exhaustion, work exhaustion, end of summer exhaustion, or all of the above ... but I've been tired. So today, I thought it'd be fun to change the pace around here a little bit... Today I'm sharing an epic adventure from the most challenging/dangerous experience I've ever encountered while location scouting. *hint* - poisonous sea snake, komodo dragons and getting lost at sea. In this episode, we're diving deep into the importance of location scouting and the preparation that needs to take place BEFORE your photoshoots. Location Scouting is an important part of the planning process that many photographers overlook—don't be one to skip this critical element! Today we're chatting with The Photographer's Path Alumni, Jennifer Morris. It's time for a raw honest conversation about life, business, and the process of leaving her full-time job of 10 years to become a photographer. Jenni is an amazing lifestyle photographer — she shoots families, newborns and portraits. She is all about authenticity and capturing life's most precious moments. But Jenni's story didn't come without its ups and downs. One in particular was in May of 2022, when Jenni was asked to set up a booth at an event to offer some mini sessions, she had an entire backdrop set up, she was ready, she was excited, she thought this was going to be a big moment for her and… no one signed up. "I was posting about it saying this is going to be so great. And no one signed up, I was so embarrassment.”That's when Jenni realized, and these are the pivotal moments in a photographers career, the moments where you can choose to keep going or give up." This “failure” quickly became one of the most pivotal moments in Jenni's career. “If I would have stopped at that moment I would not be here.” Fast forward to March of 2023, Jenni signed up for The Photographer's Path and only FIVE MONTHS later she quit her job of 10 YEARS as a dental hygienist to become a FULL-TIME Photographer! Talk about transformation! If you're feeling stuck at your current job, wondering if photography is something that's right for you, I hope this episode gives you hope for what's possible when you believe in yourself and go after your dreams. Over the years, I've learned that the littlest, tiniest moments are often the ones that spur the biggest, most massive impacts in life. From seemingly small decisions to unintended ones, the moments like that tend to define who we are and what we do — and it's why we have to, have to, haveeee to start saying YES. Why we have to start doing the things that SCARE us. Why we have to start living a life that doesn't feel SO comfortable all the time. Why we have to follow that little voice in our hearts that says GO! In today's episode, we're taking a deep dive into letting our lives change. Listen in for things like: The moments I've chosen comfort, but also the moments I've chosen DIScomfort A reminder as to what happens when you follow a scary path Inspiration to encourage your change-worthy moments The Photographer's Path is currently open for enrollment until August 11th 2023 and will not be reopening until Spring/Summer 2024. Today I brought someone very special onto the podcast, and I can't WAIT for you to get to know her! Meet Photographer's Path Alumni, Claudia Melian. Claudia is an incredible wedding photographer, originally from the Canary Islands and currently living in Connecticut. She is a true artist — her work is timeless, hypnotizing and never ceases to capture the attention of its viewers. Shortly before joining The Photographer's Path, Claudia fell in love with photography but wasn't really sure where that path could take her. She didn't know what she wanted to do, she just knew she loved taking photos. Well, within 4 months of joining TPP Claudia booked her first wedding, and within 1 year of signing up for our course she was officially a full-time wedding photographer (taking on her first wedding season all on her own)! She created a snowball effect that totally transformed her life, and we're talking all about it in today's episode. Claudia is a perfect example of what can happen when you take the leap and go after your dreams even when you're unsure of where it might take you. In this episode, she talks about: ➡️ How DMing strangers to help build her portfolio led to booking her first couples shoot ... ➡️ Tips for staying calm and in the moment during stressful shoot environments ... ➡️ What inspires her to create images unique to her ... ➡️ Advice when shoots don't go as planned (insert wedding horror stories) ... ➡️ Advice for aspiring photographers, and so much more... If you've been thinking about taking it to the next level with your photography but the fear has been holding you back, I hope you'll give this episode a listen. We just got back from our very first photography retreat and I can honestly say, my life is changed for the better beause of it. 32 of our alumni from our online course, The Photographer's Path met in Maui to fully submerge ourselves into photography. We dove deep into lighting, posing, cameras, lenses and ALL the techy goodness. We were pretty much open books 24/7, sharing and exchanging knowledge, we learned together, grew together, supported each other, and this time we spent together is something I'll honestly never forget. I watched every one of our students push outside their comfort zones and leave this retreat a different person. And it all started with finding the courage to invest in an online photography course, become a part of a loving community, and believe in themselves and their capabilities. Watching each of our students' grow has been the most incredible gift. And on today's podcast episode, I'm sharing it all with you! Listen in for: A recap of our amazing week on Maui
Lemme just paint the picture for ya. You're sitting at the Thanksgiving dinner table, catching up on the year behind you and small-talking with your extended fam… …and then your uncle (the one you see once a year — maybe) looks at you and says, “Soooo, how's your little photography business going?!” And, since it's THANKSGIVING, you can't make a scene (ugh), so you kindly say, “It's going really well actually.” To which he responds “You're still doing that huh?” Can ya relate to that one?
“I have to wait until I get a nicer camera.” “I can't do it until the kids are older” “I don't need to try something I'm not sure I can follow through on.” “I have way too many other priorities, this can wait.” “I don't have time.” How many times have you said at least one of the above about your dreams? If you're like most photographers I know (and myself, trust me), it's been… at least once. Probablyyyyyyyyy more.
I am OVERJOYED right now. Why? Because TOMORROW we'll be hosting 32 of our incredible alumni from The Photographer's Path, in HAWAII (!!!!), for a 5 day private photography retreat. The excitement I feel right now is unbelievable!! It's a DREAM COME TRUE. But here's the thing, if you check us out on instagram, you're going to see all of us in Maui this week shooting, creating magic and having the times of our lives ... but the reality is building a photography business can be hard. And the path to get to moments like this aren't always easy. In fact, there were MANY times during my journey that I've wanted to throw in the towel. But because I never threw in that towel, I get to be here, sitting on a balcony, listening to the sound of the waves as I type this email. It's because I never gave up on this dream that I've been able to experience things I never thought possible. And that's why I do what I do, why I created Horizon Found, why I created this episode for you. To make sure that YOU never give up on those dreams of yours, either. So that YOU get to experience moments you'd never imagined for yourself. I will do everything in my power to help get you to where you dream of being. So if you've been tempted to quit lately, please tune in to this episode. I made it just for you. AND PS. If you want to see what we're up to during the retreat this week, make sure to tune in on Instagram! I've been posting ALL about it, I can't wait to share all the magic we create with you! PPS. If I asked you what success really looked like to you, what would you say? If I asked you what really mattered to you, what would you say? If I asked you what your truest dreams were, what would you say? And, more importantly… …would you let yourself say it? Would you? Now, you might be answering, “hmmm I'm not really sure.” And that's okay. But what if I told you that, regardless of how far away these things feel — this knowledge of success, these things that matter, these dreams that you have — were in you already… …and you just had to find them? Because, guess what? They are. And you do. And you can. And in today's podcast episode, we're going to find them together. What if I told you that your very own life experiences might be the secret to unlocking a meaningful photography career? You're probably thinking, what the heck are you talking about, Nicole? My years of being a goofy weird kid? My obsession with my dog? My love for travel? My awkward teenage years? The secret to a meaningful career??!! The answer is… yes. We're often so close to our experiences, so close to the things that light us up, that we don't even realize how we can incorporate them into our dream lives and our dream businesses. Photographers, have you ever turned down something that could have been amazing… because you felt a little scared? Maybe you ... ... Said no to an event you were invited to because you thought you wouldn't fit in. ... Didn't sign up for that photography class because you thought you'd fail. …Said no to that shoot opportunity because you were intimidated by the client. If you've ever felt anything like this, you might be experiencing a whole lot of imposter syndrome. AKA that pesky voice inside your head that says you're not meant to be where you are. That you're faking it. That you're not good enough to succeed. That you don't deserve it. That you're the wrong person for the job. Who can relate?!
Photographers, listen up! I've got two questions for ya today... Question number 1: When's the last time you wanted to pursue an amazing & creative idea but never followed through because you felt like you never had enough time? Question number 2: How many hours a day do you spend scrolling social media? It kinda hurts when you think about these two questions side by side, doesn't it? It kinda hurts when we realize how much time we spend each day scrolling and looking at someone else's life, or creations, rather than living and creating our own. Now, I'm not telling you to throw away your phone ... HECK NO. Phones are a big part of our jobs as photographers. We need them to stay connected. What we don't need is for our phones to control us, and suck us in. We owe it to ourselves and to our ideas to create, to live, to step away from screens every once in a while and find that creative spark in ourselves again (even when it feels way easier to loaf on the couch and scroll). It reminds me of this quote from Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Big Magic: “The universe buries strange jewels deep within us all, and then stands back to see if we can find them. The hunt to discover those jewels––that's creative living.” On the podcast this week I want to talk about finding your creativity again, finding that spark of magic inside you, that jewel buried deep and bringing it to life. What photography niche makes you most excited?! When I was first starting out, I had absolutely no idea where my photography journey would take me, so I tried it all. I explored everything from weddings, engagements, maternity, products, food, events, families, landscapes, headshots and a ton of e-comm... I was even a hand model when I was a photo intern at a major fashion label (NBD lol!). But all throughout my photography journey, I kept coming back to one thing…people! I mean, is there a better feeling in the world than using photography to help someone see their own beauty and feel seen for being nothing more than who they are?! In the beginning, I didn't know I wanted to be a fashion photographer...but over time it evolved into a full on love affair. And that's the beauty of a photographer's journey—you never know where it will lead you. Fashion photography felt freeing to me and provided a platform to create new worlds that were made up of whatever I wanted—a freedom that has brought me so much happiness over the course of my career. But here's something that might surprise you: I learned life changing lessons from every single photography niche I've studied. And each one has dramatically impacted the way I show up as a fashion photographer. There is SO much to be learned from different photography niches, and today I'm sharing ALL about it. I'm also giving you some tips on how thinking like a fashion photographer can add a creative spin to your work, no matter your niche. I never really knew what the word 'mindset' actually meant. That stuff didn't really make sense to me — I thought in order to “get it”, I'd have to learn yoga and go meditate in the forest. Until my first year of college where I read a book that changed my life. I realized that mindset was a lot more simple than that… and a heck of a lot more important. I realized that a positive mindset is what truly impacts the way you walk through your life, the way you approach your life, and the way you follow through on the promises you make to yourself and to others. That book opened up a whole new world to me, and I started thinking a lot differently about life and I completely changed the way I started showing up for myself. If you've struggled with self doubt, negativity, and lack of follow through or belief in your abilities, this might help you too. We often have deep-rooted negative mindsets running on autopilot that affect a lot of the things we do on a daily basis, ESPECIALLY as a photographer. When you can recognize (and heal) them, you can change your life. Listen to this episode for a deep dive into all of it. I had OPINIONS about the way my life and career were going to go. I was going to move to LA and immediately start booking 5 ... no ...10-figure jobs! I was going to build an empire and somehow also have time to do whatever I wanted. I was going to get married and at justtttttt the right time have no problem starting a family. I was… I was… You can probably get where I'm going with this. My life and my career hasn't necessarily gone the way I thought it would. Has it been beautiful? Absolutely. But has it been perfectly planned? Absolutely not. One thing has been a constant though — a drive to work feverishly, fearlessly and fiercely on the work I love doing… even when my to-do list is the size of mount everest and it feels like my life is spiraling out of control. But, in more shocking news, working this way isn't necessarily a good thing. So, if you've ever felt like things are out of control in your business, like you're not sure what to do next, and like some days feel like you're hanging on for dear life, today's podcast episode is for you. Do your fam & friends ever act like you've kinda, uh, lost your mind when it comes to photography?! Like, you talk about a lens or the lighting inside a restaurant and you just get a buncha confused polite stares. It's not even that they're unsupportive but more so that they… just don't get it. To them, photography is just a job. It's a thing you do to make money, to survive, and to live your life. But to you, it's a lot more than that. It's the unlocking of something beautiful. It's the culmination of all of these different light frequencies to tell a story. It's the magic feeling you get when you've captured something you'll never forget. So, in the spirit of community (and no gatekeeping, ever), I wanted to remind you that this is always, always where you can come to ask questions and find out all the secrets… … a few of which I'm sharing in this podcast episode — AKA, an episode with all of the must-haves every new photographer NEEDS in their camera bag. Do you know the feeling? The feeling you get when you open your Insta, only to see that a client slapped a filter over a photo you took (and painstakingly edited for hours)… …it's painful to look at, right?! All that hard work down the drain because someone got a little photo-editing-app-happy. I get it, it hurts. And it's happened to me more times than I'd like to admit, but over the years I've discovered the perfect response that helps my clients understand how I like to approach my workflow so that we can both be happy with the end result! And it works EVERY. TIME. If this has happened to you, and you're dying to know what to say to a client who's edited and put a not-so-cute filter over your photo, this episode has got you covered! You know when you love something SO MUCH that you're terrified of messing it up? Same. That was me with photography for a long, long time. I was so passionate and so excited and so honored to do the work I was doing that, well… …I self-sabotaged the heck out of myself. I let fear win. I was terrified that everyone would find out I was a fraud. And I hated all the photoshoots I did. But, guess what? Once I finally, finally realized that I deserved to take up space, just as I was, that changed for me. My confidence grew. My images got better. The way I communicated was more seamless. One of the biggest things — one of the things that got almost instantly better — was posing my subjects in ways that made my images come to life naturally and joyfully. And, like you know, posing isn't easy. It takes a ton of practice (no matter who you are), and I don't know a single photographer who hasn't had to have a ton of practice to make it feel natural and effortless. It's what makes today's episode so freakin' valuable… because today I'm sharing simple tips to make posing feel easy. If you've felt imposter syndrome as a photographer then you know how terrible it is. It's like you go from this feeling of deep love for what you do, to the worry that you're not good enough to be doing it… …and it's the worst. Over the years, I've felt this time and time and again and I've also watched as my students and fellow photographers have, too. Luckily, though, there are some steps you can take to heal it from the inside out. Promise. On this episode, I'm sharing some of my favorite ways to turn off the imposter syndrome and reignite your feelings of passion and worth as a photographer. So tune in and remember: You ARE enough. I jumped out of bed, grabbed my coffee and sat down at my computer—excited to deliver the images I just spent all night editing. I turned my computer on, took a sip of coffee, and sat there waiting for my hard drive to load… Waiting… Waiting… Waiting… Something was wrong… My hard drive would not load… cue sheer and utter panic It was that morning that my hard drive completely failed, the hard drive I had been filling with my work for years. I lost YEARS of work in an instant. It was my worst nightmare. This is what can happen when you use the wrong hard drives and don't have proper file organization systems in place. Knowing what hard drives to use and how to properly backup your images can make or break your business. A true community hasn't always been easy for me to come by. When I was a kid, I worried I wouldn't ever have one. And, among the bullying and the name-calling and the times I ate lunch in the school bathroom a la Mean Girls, I couldn't even let myself imagine it. But when I found photography, that changed for me. Not only did I have a community, I had a purpose. A passion. A joy that I would've never believed I would have. But starting a photography business comes with a lot of vulnerability. It takes a lot to put yourself out there, to put your heart on the line, and to subject yourself to rejection. And maybe it's because I grew up being the kid who got bullied— but when I see other photographer's being bullies online, I can't sit back, watch and say nothing. That's not me, and I hope that's not you either. Online bullying in any form is unacceptable, and it's definitely not tolerated in the photography industry—but we as a community can stop it. I saw some online bullying happening recently, and it's bothered me for months, so much so that I dedicated an entire podcast episode to it. In today's episode we are getting REAL, I'm sharing...
I think that we often fold ourselves into squares—corners pressed in tightly. We're afraid of showing up as our full selves, chasing our actual dreams, following our hearts. In fact, we're probably genuinely afraid of knowing who our full selves are a lot of the time. What our dreams could look like. What our hearts are telling us. But guess what, friend? When we fold ourselves up and lean into fear, we miss so much of a life that was MEANT for us. And we deserve more than that. So if you're in a season where the fear feels extra loud and the self-doubt is running rampant, this episode is for you. Because you deserve to create a life you love. To chase your dreams so fully that they become part of your life. You deserve it so much more than you give yourself credit for. There are few things more exciting than buying a new camera (like hello, a camera store is basically the best place on earth!). But guess what? Sometimes it's just plain unnecessary, too. Yep, I said it. Now, don't get me wrong, having a good camera body is definitely an important (and really fun) part of being a photographer ... but it's not always the thing that is going to improve your image quality. And let's be real, there's nothing worse than spending your hard earned cash on a camera, only to realize you made the wrong choice. So in today's episode, we're talking about how to know when it's ACTUALLY time to upgrade your camera (like, truly time), and we're breaking down 4 reasons why you might want to hold off on clicking that purchase button. If you've ever thought upgrading your camera would be the answer to all of your photography woe's, this is the episode for you. I've never been a 9-5 job type of girl. But, regardless of the fact that I'm not a 9-5 gal, I've had many jobs as I was finding my path… ... Jobs that left me unfulfilled. ... Jobs that left me dreading each day. ... Jobs that left me wondering how I ended up here after all. ... Jobs that left me wondering when I'd finally find my purpose. And if you're rockin' the 9-5 lifestyle right now and feeling like you want so badly to, well, NOT be, you're not alone. Not even close. I've been there too… It can be hard to see a way out or know when it's time to start exploring a new path… So how do you know if it's the right time to start thinking seriously about photography? Well, I'm breaking it down on today's podcast episode, because the truth is, you might be more ready than you think… And, some food for thought before you listen… …what's your gut telling you? Do you ever log into Instagram only to be immediately overwhelmed by the sheer volume of advice? The must do's and the tips telling you what you need to do, what you did wrong, and where you're failing—that you immediately want to log out and rethink your entire life? The internet can make us feel like we're failing at everything … whether it's our diet, our makeup routine, our sleep schedule, or our work habits. For me personally, sometimes I feel like I need to dive into everything all at once, so I can “fix myself” before I start the thing I'm really excited about. And I've noticed when this happens, I get stuck in a procrastination cycle. The kind of procrastinating you do without realizing it, actually. And I bet you do it sometimes too. Maybe for you, it looks like… …spending way too much time editing a shoot to be “perfect” ,but then you never end up sharing it. …saying you can't reach out to 'X' client until you have a nicer camera or a better portfolio. …searching for the perfect solution to every problem before it ever comes. …waiting to start your business until you finally feel “ready”. Yup. I've been there, too. It can be so hard to know what to focus on when you're first starting your photography business, and shiny object syndrome is a very real thing. We can get so distracted by the things we think we “NEED” to do, that we end up spending all of our time focusing on the things that don't really matter. In today's episode, I'm dishing up the real talk because I'd bet the things you're currently hyper focused on might be distracting you from starting something really, really beautiful. Listen now to find out the things you can stop focusing on, so you can spend your precious time focusing on what really matters. When I was in photography school my teacher told me, “The only way you're ever going to comfortably make money is if you become a wedding photographer.” This was something I heard constantly when I was learning photography—that wedding photographers were the only ones who didn't struggle—and that my pipe dream of becoming a fashion photographer was just that… a dream… not realistic. I just remember thinking… HOW is that possible? There are TONS of different niches ... wedding photography can't be the ONLY one that's profitable, right? The good news is, I was right. Over the years, I've discovered that there are SO MANY major money making photography niches! The trick is finding the right one that speaks to you, lights you up, and helps you share your story. In today's podcast episode I am sharing: The Top 16 Money Making Photography Niches If you've ever wondered if photography was right for you, I hope you'll listen to today's episode. And when you do, pay close attention. Listen to each of the niches I describe and ask yourself, “Does this idea make me excited?” “Do I want to explore this more?” “Would I be happy doing this for the rest of my life?” And when the answer is yes, listen closely to your heart and let it guide you. Please check out the amazing work by our Alumni from The Photographer's Path who share their insight into each of these niches in today's episode! If you've been dreaming about turning 2023 into the year that you pivot toward a career in photography, then I've got some GOOD news for you! Today, one of my absolute favorite people joined me on the podcast… the one and only beauty photographer, Beth Sternbaum. Beth and I met back in 2010 as we were building our careers in the photography industry, but she wasn't always the amazing beauty photographer she is today. She started out in the industry as a makeup artist, and that's how our friendship started. Although Beth had a thriving career as a successful makeup artist, it wasn't long until she started to feel the pull toward a career in photography. In this episode, Beth and I talk about: ➡️ How she was able to pivot to photography full time after only two years of building her portfolio behind the scenes. ➡️ The unique way she was able to overcome self-doubt and criticism during the learning process. ➡️ Posing tips and how to bring out unique facial expressions in your models ➡️ Advice for aspiring photographers, Running from wild boars on location, cameras breaking on set, and so much more… If you've been dreaming of becoming a photographer, I hope you give this episode a listen. What has this year looked like for you? What has it taught you? If I could show myself a year ago what 2022 was going to look like for me, I'm not sure I'd have wanted to see it. To be honest, it's been hard. One of my hardest ever — and I know I'm not alone in that. But as I've gotten older, I've gotten a lot better at seeing the beauty that, yes, while it was hard, existed. Shone through. Kept showing up, even when I didn't want to. And this year in particular has taught me a ton of lessons that I can't wait to share with you on today's episode. So whether this year has been a hard one for you or your best yet, I hope this episode encourages you to think back on your year, think back on what it's taught you, and think forward to all that 2023 can be. You want to make a lasting impact from the moment your potential clients see your first image to long after you deliver your final gallery. Client experience is everything. It's how you stand out, how you provide value, and how you show you truly care. And the holiday season is the perfect time to do just that. Has your photography business ever left you feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or like you're just running around in circles? It's like you're working as hard as you can while simultaneously feeling guilty for not doing enough. Please tell me I'm not the only one who's ever felt that way. The struggle is real. Most of the time I want to do everything in my photography business all at once, perfectly, and without stress (let's all lol at me for that). Sometimes it comes from a place of genuinely loving what I do so much that I don't want to stop and come back to it later. But there were many times in the beginning of my business where my tendency was to do everything myself and never take a break because I felt guilty if I did take one. I've felt like I had to do things immediately, or else I wasn't worthy of being a photographer and owning a business. I've felt like rest wasn't an option. And for me — for all of us — that leads to burnout + overwhelm. So if you've had times where you feel a lot less like a professional photographer and a lot more like a stressed out photographer desperately in need of a break today's episode is for you. As photographers, it's heartbreaking when our clients show up to our shoots feeling self concious and worried about how they look on camera. It can throw the entire vibe of the shoot off and make them look and feel uncomfortable during the process, which isn't what ANYONE wants. I know we all wish our clients could see themselves the way we do—beautiful, radiant, unique—but sometimes getting our them to that point is a lot harder than we'd hope. If you've ever struggled with making your clients feel confident and comfortable in their own skin during your shoots, this is the episode for you! In today's episode, I'm diving into the myth behind overshooting, what it really means for your photography and why it should be erased from the photography dictionary entirely. As a photographer dedicated to telling the most beautiful stories possible, it's essential that you know this. Overshooting is ... a ... MYTH! Who the HECK got the idea that there should be a limit to how many photos you can take during a shoot? WHO decided that the people who take 200 photos are more talented than the people who take 2,000? I think I know, and in today's podcast episode I'm sharing the REAL reason photographer's worry about “overshooting” (and it has nothing to do with the amount of photos you take). What would you say if I told you that your photography could literally start making you money in your sleep?! Or… ...while you're cookin' dinner ...while you're binging Netflix on the couch ...or even while you're on vacation in Hawaii *And no, I'm not talking about selling your gorgeous prints (but, to be honest, is a totally legit thing to do too). I'm talking about something entirely different. It's easy to get stuck in the mindset that photography is only a “time-for-money” business model, and that's where so many photographers get it wrong… …but if YOU do it right, the money doesn't stop when the shoot ends. I'd LOVE to introduce you to a super important area in the photography industry that is drastically overlooked and highly underutilized by new photographers (and experienced ones too.) It's time to start making your work, work for you.
“How do I create a consistent and cohesive editing style?!” This is a question I get asked ALL THE TIME. And it's an important one because your photography style speaks to so much. It sets you apart, it lets you develop your own look, and it makes your photos that much more meaningful. But I have a secret for you...the photo editing itself is only a small part of the process of creating your style and building up consistency. In fact, so much needs to happen long before you sit down at your computer to actually do the editing. In this episode I'm sharing my top three secrets that are sure to set you on the path to consistency in your images.
