I'm baaaaaackkkk (with two new best friends) ... You heard that right, The Photographer's Podcast is BACK!  But before we get into it, I want to thank you for being here, for allowing me this season of rest as I adjust to this new mom life. I'd be lying if I said I was actually adjusted by now. This is a process that's gonna take time, and I'm enjoying the freedom and flexibility I have as a photographer to take it all in without having to rush back into work. So, thank you. Being a photographer who's in control of their own schedule, flexibility and freedom, is truly a gift. And I don't take that lightly. I wanted to properly kick things off by welcoming TPP alumni Claudia Segui to the podcast! Claudia is an incredible wedding photographer originally from Cuba who's currently living in South Florida. She is a mom of two, a wife, an inspiring artist and a hilarious, welcoming and talented photographer. Claudia never imagined she would become a photographer. She spent most days in the courtroom working as a stenographer. But when she found herself going through a tough time, feeling stressed out about her day job, her husband suggested photography as a release. After receiving a camera as a christmas gift, she was hooked, until she tried to use it… “I thought the camera was broken, I was like… it has to be, I can't be that bad.” Then Claudia joined The Photographer's Path… and everything changed. Today, she's sharing exactly how much that Christmas gift changed her life. Claudia is a perfect example of what happens when you follow your inspiration. In this episode, she talks about: ➡️ How she booked her first wedding of 2024 in Hawaii ➡️ What she does to stand out as a photographer ➡️ How she breaks the ice with new clients to ensure a smooth wedding day ➡️ What she did to find her niche and style ➡️ Advice for aspiring photographers, and so much more... Most photographers at one point or another have been hit with the dreaded question… “Hey, do you think you could send me the raw files from our shoot?!” It's like a dagger in every photographer's heart… We're immediately plagued with questions like… Did they hate the photos? Did they hate the editing? Did they hate the colors?! Do they hate ME?! It's enough to make us spiral out of control. But it doesn't have to be like that. I've experienced this question several times throughout my career and I've happily given clients my raw files, and I've happily NOT given clients my raw files. It's a complicated question with so much to unpack, and it's something many of my students in The Photographer's Path have asked me about. Get ready for the therapy session you didn't realize you needed today! I'm so excited to be sharing an Instagram Live I had last month with the amazing Jordan Stratton, an alumni from The Photographer's Path. Jordan is an incredible wedding photographer from Oklahoma and I can't wait for you to get to know her today. Jordan started TPP in Fall of 2022. A few weeks after joining, she quit her full-time job of 8 years to pursue photography. Talk about a MAJOR CHANGE right?! Some of you might be sweating just thinking about this transition. But Jordan didn't just blindly quit, she knew what she was doing. She quit her full-time job to work part-time while she actively pursued her photography dreams at the same time. But the best part?! She quit her part-time job and it only took her 8 months to become a FULL-TIME WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER! WHAT!?! Jordan's story is such an inspiration because it shows that there are so many different paths to take that can lead to your dreams and that not any one journey is the same as the next. You can make your dreams happen in a way that works for you. So, if photography is a dream in your heart, but quitting your day job seems out of reach, I hope this episode inspires you and shows you what's possible when you say yes!! If I could have told myself a year ago that today I'd be pregnant with 2 biscuits, welcoming an incredible new group of students into TPP, and sitting on my deck outside my cabin in Big Sur on MY BABYMOON, I'd have burst into tears.   It's all I wanted, you know? And it is STILL what I want. I'm so grateful, and so thankful, and so looking forward to what life has in store coming up.   But, guess what? As it happens, I'm burned out. Fulfilled? 10000% Yesssss. But exhausted and burned out? Yusssss.   Which is why Dustin and I are in Big Sur right now for a little babymoon and a little refresher, and I feel lighter already.   As you read this, I'm probably eating a donut, sitting on the redwood deck, listening to the birds enjoying a crisp, quiet morning. Or maybe we're having dinner on the cliffs, watching the sunset. Or maybe I'm zoning out listening to the sound of the dirt under our feet on hikes and the birds in the trees… whatever it is I'm taking a breath. I'm letting myself take a break and let nature fill me back up.   Because that's what we have to do sometimes.   Which is why this week I thought it was the perfect time to dive deep into burnout on this week's episode of the podcast.   Because here's the thing: Even though we LOVE the work we do — burnout still exists.   And we owe it to ourselves to know how to support ourselves, to connect back to the things we love, and to feel better.   So on this episode, you'll hear: My own experience(s) — because there are several, trust me — with burnout How to zone in on your priorities (and align your life and business with them) A reminder that it's okay feel burnout, it doesn't mean photography isn't meant for you And, more than anything, I hope this episode reminds you that you owe yourself MORE than living a life where your tank is always on empty and your lights are always flickering.   Because you do.   Please don't sell yourself short of that, okay? I never really knew what the word 'mindset' actually meant. That stuff didn't really make sense to me — I thought in order to “get it”, I'd have to learn yoga and go meditate in the forest. Until my first year of college where I read a book that changed my life. I realized that mindset was a lot more simple than that… and a heck of a lot more important. I realized that a positive mindset is what truly impacts the way you walk through your life, the way you approach your life, and the way you follow through on the promises you make to yourself and to others. That book opened up a whole new world to me, and I started thinking a lot differently about life and I completely changed the way I started showing up for myself. If you've struggled with self doubt, negativity, and lack of follow through or belief in your abilities, this might help you too. We often have deep-rooted negative mindsets running on autopilot that affect a lot of the things we do on a daily basis, ESPECIALLY as a photographer. When you can recognize (and heal) them, you can change your life. Listen to this episode for a deep dive into all of it. When I had my *first slow season* as a photographer, I thought my career was OVER. I started thinking I did something wrong, that I was a failure, that no one liked my work anymore, that my photos sucked, and that I was never going to book another job again. I was doomed...this was the end. Dramatic? Maybe. Relatable? I think so. If your inbox isn't blowing up with booking requests, maybe you understand the pain I felt too. And if you do, I'm here to help. Because over the years, I've come to realize that the "slow seasons" aren't really a bad thing at all. Not only that, but there are tons of opportunities waiting for you during the slow times as well! In today's podcast episode, I'm going to share how you can make the most of the slow seasons and use that critical time to grow your business, create less stress in your life, AND create more freedom, fulfillment and joy. Because when you know how to be strategic throughout the slow seasons, you're making space for yourself to thrive during the busy season, with less stress and more enjoyment. In today's episode, I'm diving into the myth behind overshooting, what it really means for your photography and why it should be erased from the photography dictionary entirely. As a photographer dedicated to telling the most beautiful stories possible, it's essential that you know this. Overshooting is ... a ... MYTH! Who the HECK got the idea that there should be a limit to how many photos you can take during a shoot? WHO decided that the people who take 200 photos are more talented than the people who take 2,000? I think I know, and in today's podcast episode I'm sharing the REAL reason photographer's worry about “overshooting” (and it has nothing to do with the amount of photos you take). 016 - Improve Your Phone Photography with These Simple Tips

Today, we are talking about a type of photography nearly everyone has tried, phone photography. Most people know this by now, you don’t necessarily need to have another camera with you as you can produce some pretty stunning results simply by using the phone you already have. In a lot of cases for those of us who are hiking or traveling, it’s awesome to have such a highly powered camera that fits in a pocket and doesn’t weigh 10 or more pounds. But too often I see great photographers who take terrible pictures with their phones and simply people who don’t know how to get the most out of this amazing device. So we are going to offer 8 tips to greatly improve your phone photography.Tip #1 - Shoot in RAWMost phones today have the ability to shoot in RAW. On some, this can be accessed through the native camera app. On others - like the iPhone 11, you have to use a third party camera app. RAW opens up a whole new world of editing options that simply aren’t there if you are shooting in any other format.Tip #2 - Stay away from digital zoom. There are many many phones that claim to have massive zoom ranges because of their digital zoom capabilities. But digital zoom is terrible. Even with the advent of computational photography, phones just can’t compare to actual optics. Digital zoom happens whenever your phone leaves the available focal length of your optical zoom. It works like when you crop in on a photo in an editing program. It’s essentially enlarging your image. Digital zooming increases the pixel size, decreases resolution and decreases the image quality.Tip #3 - Don’t use in-phone filters. Most phones will give you the option to shoot with a filter enabled, like adding extra warmth or enhancing vibrancy. There are many reasons you don’t want to do this, but I’m going to give you two.Firstly, this takes away your ability to edit the image. Secondly, phones overdo nearly every automatic editing process. So just do it yourself in post when you have a lot more control.Tip #4 - Get an app that lets you shoot in manual mode. Some phones will let you shoot in manual by digging into the settings of the native camera app, others force you to download a third party app to do this. But it is so well worth it. Just like on a bigger camera, get out of auto mode.Tip #5 - Use an App You LoveThis may take some trial and error to find the right one that fits your style. But there are many many different types of third party camera apps available on the market for both Android and iPhone. It is worth looking into the ones that allow you to shoot in RAW and in manual mode to find one that suits you.Tip #6 - Brace yourself and stabilize that phoneSo often I see people holding their phone out at arm’s length and putting themselves in unstable positions and trying to take photos.Treat your phone like you would a big camera and brace it properly. Hold it close to your body, hold it with two hands, rest your arms or the phone down on a solid surface. Do what you can to reduce the shake you will put through the phone.Tip #7 - AccessorizeGet a tripod. This lets you take long exposures and other fun photos. Look for real filters to go over your phone's lens; like a neutral density filter. Avoid those external lenses that promise more telephoto or wider fields of view.Tip #8 - Learn about photographyShooting on a phone doesn’t magically change the way photographs are taken. The same basics of exposure, posing, composition and colour theory all still apply to the photos you take on a phone. It’s just in a different format than we have been used to in the past. Thanks for tuning in today!

Setting goals can be a difficult task. Well, setting goals isn’t difficult but setting goals that stick is a difficult task. We know this because 83% of new years resolutions are broken by February. Therefore the problem to solve is how to set BETTER goals. Today I share my 9 steps process for setting photography goals that stick. Step 1: Realize you need to make a change You can only make change when you WANT to change. Step 2: Figure out WHERE you need to make a change Ask yourself “What feels broken” “What do I need help with” because where you feel the most pain you can make the most growth. Step 3: Set More Epic Goals Don’t set goals too crazy or too simple. “Book 60 weddings” when you have never shot a wedding is crazy. “Learn Photography” it too simple. Create a goal thats in between. Step 4: Write down your goals and make it seen When you physically write out your goals on paper you’re 43% more likely to achieve them. When you post them somewhere you see them every day you increase that chance exponentially. My goals are posted above my computer. Step 5: Make Baby steps Make baby steps that it will take to achieve your goals to keep the momentum going. Step 6: Make a challenge out of it When you turn your goals into a game you’re more likely to keep up with the baby steps. Write them down on a calendar and mark them off every day. Step 7: Check in with your goals Set a date on your calendar quarterly to check in with your goals, re assess, and plan for the next quarter for new goals. Step 8: Hang out with people who are also moving forward “You are the sum of the 5 people closest to you” When you spend more time with photographers doing great things, you will elevate your skills and desire to do great things. Nowhere is that more important than when you go from hobby photographer to making money with your camera. Surrounding yourself a group of others dedicated to growing their business and making money is the key to quick growth. Become a premium member and get access to the premium members facebook group to surround yourself with like-minded hungry photographers!   Step 9: Simulate what your life would look like after you hit your goals Achieving your goals both planning and motivation. Picturing your life after you achieve your goals will give you the motivation you need to keep going!
