48 | Winter has fully set in, the holiday glow has faded and we have several weeks before we can even start to anticipate Spring. It's natural to feel a little down and low energy in the thick of the winter. What would it look like to embrace Winter? What would it feel like to lean into the slowness and the darkness and make something special of the season that can be a bit unlikable? Over the years I've come to look forward to certain things about the winter, and I've come up with ways to support my mood because if I don't intentionally counteract the effects that winter can have on me, it can be a painful season. Listen to this episode if you're looking for ways to enjoy the Winter season or need ideas to treat yourself on a down day. I'm sharing my own ideas and several that you shared with me too! xo, Sara https://www.instagram.com/theteapleasepodcast/ (Follow The Tea, Please on Instagram) for daily wellness and mental health content!
There's nothing like a life chat with a best friend am I right? Stephanie Mikuls is a photographer in Denver, Colorado and she's introspective like us. Steph and I sit down to chat about real personal growth — the tools that help, the mindsets that shift, and what it actually looks like uncover and follow your authentic self. Not from a self-help professional's point of view but from 2 people who try their best to find balance, enjoy life, and live in a way that reflects their true nature. 46 | Tis the season for personal growth! New Years can be such a great time to reset and really think about areas of life we'd like to improve, and we all have different systems for setting goals and making plans. I'm sharing what I did this year to map out my intentions, NOT resolutions -- we talk about the difference in this episode too. 45 | In this weeks episode I'm letting you in on how home renovations are *actually* going, and what I've found definitively does NOT help when trying to navigate a stressful season. It would be inauthentic for me to talk through a bunch of things to do to make seasons like this easier. But I believe that sometimes there's just a lot going on and we have to roll with it. I've been trying to let go of the need to control, but I haven't done it perfectly (or even close). This episode is an honest reflection on how we might realistically navigate a tough season, and all the things I've tried that definitely don't help. 41 | As with any habit, I think we can really benefit from checking in on our relationship with alcohol and making sure we're feeling comfy with where we're at. When I drink does it feel like my choice? Or does the alcohol take over? Am I having a drink because I feel like I have to? Or is it my decision? Do I wake up feeling regretful? Am I in control? Is it serving me? These are the questions that can help us determine if our relationship with alcohol is a healthy one. The boys have left the group chat and it's time to talk about the girliest topic of all time: raging hormones, PMS, and the cycle our bodies go through every 28ish days. YAY! (kinda). It doesn't come naturally to talk about these things because there has been a stigma for a long time and I always feel like I have to pretend that my cycle isn't affecting me when it reality I've gone through a lot with my own cycles, like losing them for a length of time or having extreme symptoms that impact my daily life. So in this episode, we're talking about it. So much education is still needed and it needs to start with women understanding more about this part of our human experience. That's where Berrion Berry comes in, she's a Menstrual Health Educator, Practitioner & the Founder of Optimize Your Flo. She teaches modern women to transform their periods and life through menstrual mastery. Bad mental health days can be so confusing and frustrating -- the days where we feel off, could be categorized as "no bones" days, or days we recognize a dip in our mental health. I think we all have bad mental health days because we're all human and live with responsibilities and pressures that can feel really heavy sometimes. I've had a lot of these days and have put a lot of thought into why they happen and what I can do to decrease the frequency and the intensity of my bad mental health days. It can be done! This topic comes from personal experience and curiosity about my own choices in my 20's. I had a thing for torturing myself with unhealthy relationships. Much of my story comes from trying to heal from these toxic relationships after my confidence was torn down, my perception of reality was so skewed, and I didn't think I could trust myself anymore. It only makes sense that I get a therapist on the show to dive into all of it! Natalie Hartney is a board-certified counselor working in private practice since 2014, and she's the host of the Bad Childhood By The Optimistic Therapist podcast. We don't have to think about breathing, our bodies do it intuitively. But what if we did think about it? What if we brought intention and awareness to our breath and used our own breath to calm our nervous systems and heal? I said I would only do solo episodes it felt right, and it's feeling right! Obviously, I talk about mental health a lot on the show, but I haven't walked through my story in detail or really explained why I'm so passionate and curious about different modalities to improve mental health. In this episode, I'm filling you in on my experience, which again feels a little vulnerable but I think there is value in sharing a personal experience, and we definitely don't need to be judging each other's experience with mental health. India Oxenburg was a member of NXIVM, a cult hiding behind the facade of personal development courses and community. Her story is one of humility, strength, and resilience. In this episode, I get pretty candid about my experience in yoga teacher training with a leader who I felt was on the road to being a cult leader (but not very good at it, thankfully), India recognized several parallels to the language and manipulation that was used in NXIVM. While India's story is extreme, mine is likely not too uncommon in the wellness industry.
