Stepping out of our comfort zones can be a daunting endeavor, but when we do, the transformation is often profound. That's exactly what happened with Jocelyn, our community hero who rose to the occasion in our two-hour cocktail party challenge. Her adventure, steeped in the spirit of her late sister's encouragement, wasn't just about mixing drinks; it was a stirring tale of personal growth, a testament to the joy found in embracing life's challenges with open arms. Our conversation with Jocelyn isn't just about her success at throwing a party; it's a broader exploration of the liberating philosophy of embracing life's imperfections. We share insights into the simple pleasures of connecting with others and the strength we draw from our community. The 'Build the Positivity' party wasn't about flawlessness—it was about individuals coming together, sharing stories, and reinforcing the bonds that make our experiences so rich. And as we anticipate the 'Staying Home for the Holidays' gathering, we reaffirm the notion that meaningful connections can flourish even without the trappings of perfection.Lastly, we take a moment to celebrate Jocelyn Johnson's remarkable personal achievements. Battling health challenges and the stigmas of being the "tubby kid," she emerged triumphant, channeling her energy into creating a children's book that teaches accountability in the most delightful way. "On Account of Billy T" is a tribute to Jocelyn's sister and a gift to young readers everywhere. Jocelyn's journey, from overcoming personal obstacles to becoming a published author, inspires us all to heed her advice: "Do the Thing, don't wait for opportunity, create it." In 2017, many Americans watched in horror as violent images from the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville started spreading. A few short years later, My Monticello tells the story of Charlottesville neighbors fleeing racist violence and taking refuge in Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello. The author, Jocelyn Johnson, talks about what it means to be writing about a past and a future that both feel very present and whether there's hope in writing about America's racism. Later in the show: Famous for the fatwa put on him by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989, Salman Rushdie is still writing years later--but now from the United States. Pennie Ticen discusses Rushdie's past and the new kind of writing he's publishing as an American immigrant. Plus: On the surface, The Tigger Movie and Anne of Green Gables don't have a lot in common. But if you look a bit closer, they both touch on an incredibly popular theme in stories for kids: adoption. Kim Gainer explores why kids are so obsessed with reading about adoption and how these stories help shape who we are.
After a very gloomy report from Chris Walkland, we move into something more positive to help farmers with those ever-rising costs; Will and Ben are joined by Jocelyn Johnson, research scientist with STgenetics in the USA (parent company of Cogent) and Rose Jackson, Kite's Head of Genetics to tell us all about the ‘EcoFeed' index. Jocelyn introduces STgenetics and explains the driver behind looking for these genomic traits, how the index was developed and the opportunity it presents to help reduce costs as well as the carbon footprint. Rose explains the EcoFeed genomic traits (both cow and heifer) and the science behind it as a measure of feed efficiency. They discuss why these traits might be of interest to dairy farmers especially now we are starting to see the impact of the EcoFeed trial over here in the UK. With feed as one of the biggest financial costs and biggest impact in terms of our carbon footprint, they discuss how these genomic predictions translate on a practical basis to the amount of feed that a farm might save on an individual level and therefore how it might help to influence decision making on farm and therefore improve efficiencies.
