Derek Starkey’s main goal in life is to connect with our community in as many ways as he can to be able to utilize his knack for collecting tools and supplies to help create opportunities. His workshops allow the public to build almost anything for free. They are also designed to help people solve problems in their life and help spark creativity. Because downtown Kennewick is focused on becoming a creative district he designed a collection of mobile art stops where people can use art supplies and even display their art. With a very difficult start in life, he was challenged and slowly lost hope for potential growth. Things quickly changed when learning to be grateful so he developed techniques for practicing gratitude and amplifying his life. In his book " I'm This Many" he shows the power of gratitude and perspective. After beginning his gratitude practice his life changed dramatically. Through my life I have seen many seasons that have forced me to exercise personal strength. I’m more familiar with enduring long stretches of time that require resilience and strength than I’d like to count and I know life will bring me many more. Out of all those times in life, the ones that test me the most involve the protection and wellbeing of my children. Because I know how resilient I am, I know that I can withstand just about anything. But once you put my children in the mix it doesn’t matter how strong and steady I know I am, my heart can’t stand knowing that my child will have to hurt to gain that ability within themselves as well."

Susan Faith Brady was born in Wenatchee WA and has moved all over eastern washington. Working as wildland firefighter during her time as an undergrad student brought her great joy proving to be some of the best summers during her university years. Before she knew it, God blessed her with her husband who has been such a stabilizing force in her life! She completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Central Washington University, both degrees being in Biology. Interestingly, her graduate studies were in frog egg fungus among other things. She spent time utilizing her schooling to radio track frogs allowing her to enjoy her love of research science. She managed to hop on a National Science Foundation Education grant, helping her infuse real scientists and science into classrooms. She adored working with the children in the classroom and I loved how kids, of all ages, are natural scientists. With the surprising news of a little one of her own in the way her and her husband decided to move which ended her grant. So, she started Buckwheat Bottoms in her garage when her son was just 4 months old and it exploded! Even though at times she felt like she had no idea what she was doing in the beginning stages, she did know that she just loved selling diapers and more than anything she loved that her tiny little garage became this magical space where strangers showed up and became dear friends. Some days during "evening hours" the little 10x12 foot room would be packed with people, all of which laughing and enjoying each others company. Growing her business is where she holds her most bitter sweet memories. It took them from the innocent quiet garage store into a thriving business in downtown Richland! During this time her and her business grew a LOT but what continued was her love for her deep interactions and connections. By some amazing chance in 2015, a lactation consultant (who would become her mentor) walked into Buckwheat Bottoms, freshly retired, and wanting to donate some flexible lactation consulting time to the community. An amazing friendship blossomed between the two of them and Susan discovered that this breastfeeding help thing was seriously perfect for her. And so, last year she sold Buckwheat Bottoms. With such a strong tie to her store she grieved for the ending of this chapter in life. Not the small business stress/excitement, or the job, or any of that...it was the connections with the people. Which brings us to today. She is a mom to two beautiful kids. And a breastfeeding educator, who is always looking for more ways to bring families together, especially women and new moms. Because life can feel so lonely. And when we find connection, it gets a little bit easier.Find her at :https://www.nourishingus.com/https://www.facebook.com/NourishTriCities/

So, when she said she had big news that she wanted to share on Unraveling with Rayne IN the studio I embraced the opportunity. It allowed me to share my new found love of being a podcaster with my go getting aspiring entrepreneur little girl and it doesn’t get better than that. I hope you enjoy this little walk through an eight year olds mind as she begins to spread her wings in this great big world.
