Welcome! This is the episode where I share Lincoln's birth story. Honestly this was incredibly therapeutic for me to plan, write, and share. I'm approaching this episode primarily as a way for me to process and document our birth - something for us, our family, to listen to later on in life. Here are a few topics that were discussed:what it was like delivering during the covid pandemicA few tips that helped with my pregnancy overallA few tips that helped me the most during the birth Any red flag (or yellow) flags during pregnancy that would give us the idea that Lincoln would need to visit the NICUTamara, my doula: www.storkhelpers.comMy newsletter: https://colossal-artisan-3105.ck.page/whataboutthemamaIG: @karenakarena_ or @whataboutthemamaThanks for being here!

We definitely can all agree that this year is one for the books. I honestly can't believe that it's already almost over? Anyway, while 2020 has brought on so much stress, anguish and unpredictability, the one word that sticks out for me from this year is: growthThere's been quite a few big things that happened, from returning back to my full time job after a 3-month maternity leave, to surviving a global pandemic, to starting this podcast - just to name a few.And even though this year has been tough, it's also kind of strangely brought a renewed sense of opportunity, hope, peace, confidence...positivity...growth.It's been a strange, delicate balanceSo for this last episode of 2020, I did it solo: just me, myself, and I, sharing a few lessons I've learned from 2020 that I want to take with me into the new year, such as:the knowledge that I can do hard thingsContinue the work of deepening my connection with my intuitionSurround myself with people that lift me up and that I want to be more likeand a few things that I plan to leave behind, such as:focusing on the small, minute detailsgoal-based thinking (but WHAT! I LOVE goals? Listen to the episode to learn more about this one) Join me on this very first solo episode by clicking the link in my bio, or searching for "what about the mama?" anywhere you listen to your podcasts. And let me know: what's something that you're taking with you from 2020? What's something that you hope to leave behind?
If you've read any personal development/self-help book out there, you know the importance of gratitude. It sounds simple, but there's a little more to it than just saying what you're grateful for (though that's a big part of it). What about those days where everything wrong is just glaring right at you, and you're really struggling? Do you brush those feelings aside and keep on with the gratitude? Nope, that's what toxic positivity is called. My guest Mollie and I chat about this very topic. We also talked about:The differences between a lack mindset, versus an abundance mindset The work-life “balance” - is that even a thing? (hint: I don't think so...it's more of a blend versus a balance, imo)The feeling of being maxed out, and how gratitude can help to get out of those feelingsThe stigma around MLM, but how joining one can work beautifully for you and your familyWhy the key to starting a gratitude practice is to not have any, zero, outcomes attached Connect with MollieIG: @mollsjimmar BOOKS/RESOURCESQuantum Success by Christy WhitmanAtomic Habits by James ClearMach II with Your Hair on Fire by Richard Bliss BrookeQuantum Energy/Enneagram Coach Whitney Ellison's IG: @wellisonenterprises Find me on IG: @whatabout_themama
Why are we talking about infertility on a podcast for mamas?Because motherhood is so multi-dimensional and layered that people dealing with infertility are mamas, too.Gillian, a fellow OT based in mental health and pal of mine, shares her story on this week's episode of the podcast. Even if you're someone that has never dealt with infertility, tuning into this episode will help you better address it with the people in your life that are dealing with it (and trust me, there's someone in your life going through infertility).Gillian and I talked about: The impact that infertility has on her roles and routines Options such as IVF, foster care, and adoption, and how these options have nothing to do with infertility The most helpful way to approach the conversation with someone dealing with infertility or pregnancy loss Her primary ways of dealing that have been most helpful The trauma that's usually part of adoption Gillian shares her story beautifully in hopes that it'll resonate with others. Chronic and acute pelvic pain is common after having a baby, but it's not normal. Pain can oftentimes be easily dismissed as something that is all in the client's head. But to the client, pain is very real and negatively impacts daily roles, habits and routines. Yes, pain is created in the brain but it's definitely not just “all in your head”. Lindsey and I dove into this topic on today's episode of the podcast: what about the psychological piece to pelvic pain?We also talked about: Her journey getting to where she is today, with E-motion therapy and “mother function” Why occupational therapy is the perfect fit to address pelvic health and chronic pain (hint: it's our holistic perspective taking into consideration the person, environment, and chosen or required occupation/activity) Managing our own expectations around what role our general practitioner or obgyn plays in us getting that holistic, client-centered car How she applies the “1%” guideline to her practice (and life, in general) Little, yet impactful, tweaks and adjustments that can be implemented throughout our days to manage pain, and the importance of honoring the mind-body connection Our eighth sense: interoception (something that I've become increasingly interested in!) Lindsey has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the psychological component to addressing pain. Our chat was just so warmhearted yet packed full of information! Cheryl, OTR and founder of Arthritis Life, and I talked about: What she wishes she would've done differently in those first few months of becoming a mama (hint: it's asking for, AND accepting, help and not trying to rush into a new “norm” so quickly) Her feelings around being the “exception” (i.e., her mentality of "despite RA, I'm still able to fill-in-the-blank!” can be exhausting) You're still a good mom if you leave your baby overnight at a trusted place How the “breast is best” phrase and mentality impacts a mama living with a chronic illness, and how that phrase does not take into account the fact that babes are born into a family, dynamic, system with lots of pieces to take into consideration The enormous dynamic shifts and changes in relationships after bringing home baby Why optimism can sometimes be a bad thing! true or false: “How is the baby sleeping?” is an appropriate question to ask a new mama. FALSE. Sleep is a touchy subject that can bring on a wave of negative feelings for new mamas. We know that our sleep is completely thrown for a loop when the little one arrives, and we're all too familiar with that sense of anxiety around getting our little ones to get on a sleep schedule. I know I experienced that when expecting to return to work after a 12-week maternity leave. This is what Aidee and I chatted about during this week's episode. We also talked about: The power of the “pause”, and combating that comparison trap we all feel sometimes, especially surrounding our babies sleep schedule Viewing periods of rest and productivity as “seasons”, honoring transitions (especially the back-to-work transition) and how all things are temporary The nitty gritty around sleep: ways to prepare for motherhood, how sleep guides our executive functioning which is linked to everything we do, how leaning on your support system and having a plan prior to baby's arrival supports the sleep journey Which is better: tuning into baby's natural rhythm versus training baby to sleep RESOURCES/CONNECT WITH AIDEE:www.functionalmomot.comIG: @functional_mom_otFacebook: Functional Mom OTFind me on IG: @whatabout_themama

Now with the whole pandemic most parents had the option to have their children take the virtual route when it comes to their schooling. So where to even begin when making that decision?Sarah Collins from @homeschoolot and I chatted about just that, along with a few other things: The difference between homeschooling and virtual schooling Why homeschooling works best for some families Addressing the stigma related to homeschooling Her top five tips to find balance between running a business, being a mom, and homeschooling 3 kids Rhythm versus a routine life A few good resources to help both homeschooling AND virtual schooling mamas This episode is for you if you're a mom that wants to know more about home/virtual schooling (just about any mama, right?) or if you're an OT that's interested in how OTs can help with the homeschooling world. Welcome to the “what about the mama?” podcast! Our guest on today's show is a yoga therapist, physical therapist, pelvic health specialist, and mama to two: Jessica Chavez-Kline. I was introduced to Jessica through Anchor Wellness, a private physical therapy practice in Cincinnati, OH. Jessica has this calm sense about her while still not forgetting about and actually fully embracing the hectic life of motherhood. We chatted about things like: How asking for help is a HUGE a form of self-care Her reason behind deepening her yoga practice to more than just aesthetics The scientific benefits of a simple yoga practice for new moms (and the mind-body connection's role in cortisol a.k.a stress hormone regulation) The single most important thing for moms (and all parents) to do to stay level-headed Simple ways to incorporate being present and more mindful in your days (hint: it's something that you already subconsciously do-breathe) Why failure is actually a good thing RESOURCES:Anchor Wellness Instagram: @anchorwellnesscincywebsite: anchorcincy.comMy IG: @whatabout_themama

welcome to the “what about the mama?” podcast. Thanks for being here, and I am so excited to help you shift your focus from the baby, to yourself, the mama, even if it's just during this episode. I'm your host, Karena Skibinski-an occupational therapist, mama, and an exceptional napper (and that was even pre-Lenny). Give me 5 minutes and I can, and will, take a nap. Our guest on today's show is the founder of “My Mayne Wardrobe.”, Janel Mayne. Janel is a pediatric occupational therapist and personal stylist that helps women get over the “uniform” syndrome. I know that as a new mom, I've had my fair share of frumpy days with “nothing to wear”. It's the worst! Janel's story is relatable and she helps women like me find their unique style in a fun and approachable way. A few things we covered: What style really even is, and how to get started finding your own style (hint: it's not just cruisin' around the clothing section at Target) Simple ways to elevate your style The number one thing you need to know about sprucing up your wardrobe How clothes impact your self-esteem and confidence How life transitions can (and probably should!) impact style Why style is more than just clothing Resources from this episode:www.mymaynewardrobe.comIG: @mymaynewardrobeThose cute, dangly earrings that I was talking about? Throughout my own motherhood journey I've realized that from pregnancy to birth and beyond, life is ALL about the baby: We, and other people, ask questions like how is the baby doing? Eating? Sleeping? Developing? Nobody really asks about the mama! In reality, baby is good, and his needs are met. With this podcast, I'm hoping to a) bridge that gap between the mamas and the wonderful resources out there, and b) give you the support you need to make you feel like you're dong a great job. Because you are! Motherhood is tough, and moms are the true superheroes of the world. I really hope that listening to this podcast leaves you feeling like you just left a dinner and a few glasses of wine night with a couple of your best girlfriends.
