Lisa's success began with her idea for a barrette. While working for the CBS affiliate in Tucson, AZ she often wore her hair up in a French Twist. Friends and co-workers regularly asked how she fashioned the professional up-do so she began to scour stores to find a barrette that would help. When she discovered there was nothing on the market she decided to invent one. A short thirteen months later she had patented, manufactured, sold to stores and ultimately licensed the patent to Scunci® for 20 years of regular income. The product is now sold in stores around the world and has generated over $20M globally! Since then Lisa has licensed 6 more products to major distributors including Goody Products®, Scunci®. and Helen of Troy®. Welcome back! I am excited to bring you my conversation with Cameron-Brooks alumnus, author, business leader and all-around good guy, CORY BOUCK! Our conversation weaves in and out of how Cory's military experience has impacted his business career, how he's propeled himself into greater levels of success, leadership, and career progression advice/observations (i.e. does your career need to be a ladder?). Cory is the Asia/Pacific Regional Business Director at Johnsonville Sausage, and is the author of The Lens of Leadership: Being the Leader Others Want to Follow. He is maniacally committed to profitable volume growth through a "Serve-Build-Inspire!" leadership philosophy. Cory is a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and also served there as a leadership instructor. Cory graduated in the top one percent of student leadership ranks. As an instructor, he led a team of civilian PhDs and military instructors in managing the content and delivery of the advanced core leadership course. He is a former Naval Flight Officer. Cory led a P-3 Orion combat aircrew across the world, including missions over Bosnia-Herzegovina. His crew was twice named #1 of 48 crews in the Atlantic Fleet. He led award-winning brand and event marketing teams at General Mills, Newell-Rubbermaid, and Johnsonville Sausage. Cory led the team that developed a NASCAR strategy for the Chex cereal portfolio with Richard Petty Enterprises. At Newell-Rubbermaid's Little Tikes toy division, the product development team he led earned a Parent's Magazine “Best Toys of the Year” award. The Johnsonville brand team he led more than doubled net-margin dollar growth in two years and grew household penetration by 10%. His team also earned an “EFFIE” from the North American Marketing Association for effective advertising. He joined Johnsonville's OD&L team to create a leader-development system. In three years, the internal promotion rate for leadership positions increased from 40% to 70%. He was responsible for employee development, technical training, and executive coaching. In 2016, his team was awarded a global “Excellence in Practice” award from the international Association for Training & Development (ATD). Johnsonville was one of only five American companies awarded in a field of 25 awards from 125 global submissions. He is a truly global business leader. Having worked in 20+ countries on five continents over thirty years, Cory leverages his cultural fluency and business acumen to help grow America's #1 sausage brand in Asian markets. He leads teams in Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan that manage sales, distributor partnerships, consumer marketing, finance, importing, and local production (China). He is active in leadership outside of work. He served two terms as an elected city councilman, chairing several committees while working with state and federal legislators. Cory is a pilot and youth mentor in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol. The Bronco Will Ride Again The 2020 Ford Bronco is part of the $1.4 billion investment that Ford is making into its Michigan plants. Way back in 1966, Ford introduced its original SUV and cut a trail to the great outdoors that would be followed by generations of Americans. And now, Bronco is coming back, strapped with thrilling power and go-anywhere capability. Michigan Central Station Investment Ford is renovating the Michigan Central Depot in Corktown after a purchase of $90 million and announced a $1 billion restoration. Ford plans to bring 5,000 jobs to the building and surrounding area to work on autonomous and electric cars. The Michigan Central Station was dedicated in 1914 and brought generations to Michigan as the auto industry boomed. The last passenger train left the station on Jan. 5th 1988. Today, thousands of people attend tours of the newly opened facility. Fiat Chrysler Mack Avenue Engine Complex In Detroit, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's Mack Avenue Jeep plant is now under aggressive 7 day a week construction. The Mack expansion is part of a $4.5 billion investment into five of the automaker's Michigan plants. $1.6 billion transformations of the Mack Avenue Engine Complex on the city's east side into an assembly plant to churn out new three-row, full-size Jeep and next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs. Those are key products to create the profits the carmaker needs to invest in its future and offer plug-in hybrids and eventually electric vehicles to meet federal emissions standards. General Motors Goes Electric in Michigan General Motors plans to retool its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plan to build electric trucks. Continued operations of the plant as an electric-truck factory — combined with the ongoing transformation of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Mack Avenue Engine Complex into an assembly plant for traditional, plug-in hybrid and eventually electric Jeeps — would be a net positive for the city, said Sandy Baruah, CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber. Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski said the importance of her city's plant could not be overestimated "in terms of creating jobs, in terms of creating business for local businesses in our local communities, for creating and sustaining a vibrant manufacturing base in the country as a whole." In this week's CRE Elite, we visit Rhode Island and talk to Michael Giuttari, the President and founder of MG Commercial Real Estate in Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to forming MG Commercial, he was President, Principal Broker and one of the founders of another regional commercial real estate firm for 10 years. He has been in the commercial real estate business for 27 years. Mike is heavily involved with his local Board of Realtors, the chamber of commerce and is a great champion for the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR). His clients include CVS Pharmacy, Pepperidge Farm, Newell Rubbermaid, FedEx Ground, Hoechst-Celanese, Cintas, Highland Corporate Park (City of Woonsocket), F.W.
