In this episode of How Not To Suck at Divorce, we are talking about what so many divorced parents struggle with—kids who resist going to the other parent's house. We talk about why this happens and offer actionable tips for managing these tough transitions. It's completely normal for kids to feel conflicted, and in this episode, we break it down and share ways to make those transitions smoother. We dig into the "EASE" acronym (you'll have to hit play to find out what this is if you don't know) to give you a simple framework for communicating with your child during these moments. We also talk about why setting boundaries is key and how to do it in a way that doesn't make your child feel torn between parents. In this episode, you'll learn: How to show empathy for your child's feelingsThe importance of setting boundaries and maintaining a calm demeanor during difficult transitionsHow to document issues related to child transitions, especially if they become an ongoing concernHow to communicate clearly with your co-parent, and when it's necessary to seek legal advice if the issues persistNo doubt, this sucks. There's an elephant in the room! Everyone KNOWS there's an elephant in the room, and they keep glancing at it—except for one person who is highly committed to ignoring elephant. The elephant is making a mess. It's taking up all the air and space in the room, and it's already crushed poor Bob. Yet instead of talking about the an elephant in the room, people are afraid to mention that there's an elephant. Some people get so uncomfortable that they leave the room, but still say nothing. Everyone is hoping that the person who is ignoring the elephant will finally acknowledge it, so they can do something about it, but they aren't sure how to go about it.In this episode, Brett and Joe unpack the phenomenon of the elephant in the room. They explore:The dynamics that create this situationHow looking directly at these issues can lead to healing and growthThe importance of addressing difficult topics in both personal and professional settingsHow to create a culture where individuals feel safe to express their thoughts and feelingsThe need for leaders to model this behaviorThe significance of conflict in fostering trust and connectionSend us your questions on Twitter, through our website, or in our Circle community! In this episode, we answer a listener's question, "How can I avoid merging with my mother?" Paula's mother had experienced an unjust situation, and Paula felt angry and protective on her mom's behalf. Listen in on the self-care and reframing tips Reiki Master Geneva Robins had for this situation.Recognize it comes from a Good place - You Care!If you see yourself in Paula's shoes and feel upset or angry about injustice in the world, know that feeling has a very positive core. You care! What an amazing place the world would be if everyone cared as much as you!Sometimes, simply noticing that the energy underneath the strong feeling of distress and anger is actually coming from a place of deep love can help reframe things. As soon as you notice what the core is, you can shift into that loving space.Create a gentle space to acknowledge your feelingsThe next step is to give yourself a space, a moment where you can step away from the situation. To temporarily pause the thinking that is creating the flood of emotion in your body and just give yourself a space to rest, ground, and come back to yourself. This can be very difficult to do when you're in a heightened state, but it is essential if you want to be of maximum service to the one you love.To do this, it's useful to pay attention to the physical sensations in the body. Gently notice areas of tension, of different temperatures, noticing if there are any muscles that are clenched, if your breathing is tight and not flowing. And then just gently working to create space around all the sensations and gently creating room with your breath and awareness into the simple sensations of distress and anger within the body. It's a heightened form of mindfulness. Even a few minutes of paying attention to your inner physiological state will begin to bring in a sense of calm. You might like the Releasing Anger Meditation as a tool to begin anchoring yourself back in the present moment. Come back to yourself and the present - Grounding and your AuraAnother powerful tool is grounding, which connects to the energy within the Earth and allows that nurturing energy to bring a sense of peace into your body. Try the Grounding Meditation to activate that wise Earth Energy.Noticing the energy around your body and bringing a bit of space between you and the situation is also deeply healing. Each person has their own energy bubble, the aura, and when the aura is strong, you feel clear and are better able to discern what is your feeling and what another person's feeling. The aura is so important if you are an empath or a highly sensitive person! It helps you avoid merging with another person's energy so you can be in a good place to help them. The good news is just imagining a calming and comforting energy in the aura will help you. When you are back in your bubble, it is much easier to hold space for your loved one or the difficult situation you are facing. It is the best place for you to see their strength and cheer on their empowerment. If this is difficult for you, you can also try a Reiki session. Reiki is a gentle way of grounding and reconnecting to the flow of energy, harmonizing you with a state of peace and calm so that you can get clarity on the situation. Try the Self-Healing Meditation to see how even 5 minutes can help. The Reiki Ideals can help you get perspectiveAnger is a normal emotion when a boundary is crossed, and you or your loved one is threatened. It's a survival emotion that helps us escape danger. The problem is when anger gets stuck and becomes chronic, it just ends up burning us up.In Reiki, we practice the Reiki ideals, which are five principles for leading a happy life. The Reiki ideals are: just for today, I will let go of anger, I will let go of worry, I will be grateful for my many blessings, I will do my spiritual work honestly, and I'll be kind to myself and others. When you're facing a big issue, it can be very helpful to come back to each of the Reiki ideals and allow their wisdom to guide you to a more restful frame of mind. When you're able to come back to that space of clarity, it's much easier to see what your best action will be. When we're in the grips of anger, it is very difficult to know what the best action is because we become erratic and explosive. We still need to feel and acknowledge that anger, but we need to put it to work for us in a way that will be constructive and productive to our ultimate goals. This can be difficult when it involves somebody we care about because we have anger but also vulnerability and maybe worry. When you work through the Reiki ideals step by step, all the way to kindness, you end up getting clarity and peace along the way. So that when you take action, which anger requires, you are taking the best action possible that will help the situation and bring harmony to yourself and others. You can learn more about the Reiki ideals in Geneva's book The Secret Art of Happiness: How to Change Your Life with the Reiki Ideals. How does this sit with you?If you found the tips in this episode helpful and resonated with Paula's experience, we encourage you to leave a comment on the blog sharing your thoughts and insights. Send us a Text Message. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we sat down with Phyllis Leavitt to discuss her story and the crucial need for collective mental health. Phyllis shares the importance of understanding the psychological underpinnings of societal issues, breaking cycles of abuse, and the importance of fostering individual and national healing. Phyllis Leavitt graduated from Antioch University with a Master's in Psychology and Counseling in 1989. Phyllis co-directed a family-based sexual abuse treatment program called Parents United in Santa Fe, New Mexico, until 1991 and then went into private practice full-time for the next 30-plus years. She has worked extensively with abuse and dysfunctional family dynamics, their aftermath, and some of the most important elements for healing. Our focus today is on her latest book, American Therapy: A New Approach to Hope and Healing for a Nation in Crisis, which delves into what perpetuates abuse at every level, the probable outcomes for individuals and the nation if cycles of violence and abuse continue unchecked, and, crucially, how to elevate the principles of individual and family healing to national awareness and implement them for the greater American family. She has also published two other books, A Light in the Darkness and Into the Fire, which chronicle her personal healing journey. In today's episode, we cover: How our family conditioning impact our thoughts, behaviors, and feelingsThe global and historical context of collective traumaHow post-traumatic stress manifests in different people What we personally find acceptable vs. what we allow on a larger scaleThe power of bringing the lens of psychology to our human experiences How the collective is living in constant fight or flight modeThe potential impact of collective healing The stigma around therapy and mental illnessesWhy we have to start taking responsibility for ourselves We hope you enjoyed this conversation with Phyllis! Like the divine connection between the earth and the air, your physicality and your spirituality are closely intertwined. Loving your body — your skin, your hair, your angles AND your curves — is directly related to your spiritual gifts.Having unloving feelings toward your body can cut you off from enjoying your full spiritual potential. Meanwhile, deepening your loving connection to your physical body can amplify your connection to the spiritual realm and help you tap more easily into your spiritual gifts. The problem? We live in a world that has commercialized body insecurity and self-loathing, submerging us in messages that our bodies are not “good enough.”How do we break free and learn how to better love our beautiful, perfect selves, inside and out? Our greatest power tool for building relationships, and our most devastating weapon for destroying them is our use of words. It's not only the words themselves, but how and when they are delivered that can make the difference between the construction and the destruction of positive connection and harmony. In Episode #122, I spoke with Terre Short, author of “The Words We Choose” Your Guide to How and Why Words Matter. To continue the theme of speaking mindfully, I am joined today by Melanie Sears, a retired nurse who has been a student, practitioner, and teacher of Non-violent Communication for over 30 years, who will share wisdom about choosing our words from the perspective of Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Enjoy “Choose Your Words”, Episode #123 of Co-creating Peace, a podcast series about conscious communication and conflict transformation. Highlights you won't want to miss include:Nonviolent communication and understanding feelingsThe relationship between our feelings and our needsWho is responsible for the feelings people experienceSpeaking without judgementThe value of giving yourself empathyMelanie Sears has been a student of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) for more than thirty years. She has written three books based on NVC principles. Humanizing Health Care, followed by a workbook, Choose Your Words in two versions: one geared toward professionals who work in health care and the other one geared to caregivers and family members caring for someone with a psychiatric disorder. Humanizing Health Care is translated into German, Korean, Japanese and Chinese. Choose Your Words was written as a companion workbook for Humanizing Health Care, it is also a wonderful stand-alone workbook that anyone can learn and benefit from. I want to share it with you before Humanizing Health Care because it is a great follow-up to Episode #122 in providing tools for mindful, conscious communication. While she used to work in the corporate world, Alison as a child was already very entrepreneurial that she was always excited at the sight of different stores and the idea of running her own business. So the day she got laid off, she thought that her circumstances finally made the decision for her. At about the same time, she also started paying attention to her own feelings and stopped putting herself last. She got the help of two coaches to make sure her next job and choices would be the best for herself. One helped her in a more personal way, by helping her make choices based on her core values. The other helped her with her business choices. This was the coach who taught her to order her priorities in this manner: self, family, business. That's basically what set her up to succeed.Highlights:After 20 long years, she spoke with her ex-husband about her bi-curious feelingsThe first couple of steps she took to becoming her real self was getting her pixie hair cut and buying her first-ever cat-eye glasses; two things she used to think she would look terrible with The affirmations she got when she braved herself into finally revealing her true color boosted her confidenceReaching out to individuals who go through similar struggles and joining such communities as Late Bloomer Lesbians helped her find her own identity The idea of nesting made her realize they do not have to go through the divorce as difficult as it lookedThey are still largely in the adjustment stage especially the kids, getting through the divorce process and custody arrangements, but they continue being a family. By coming out, she has become happier, more fulfilled, and a 100% better mom than she ever was years earlier. Even her transition from the corporate to the entrepreneurial world was made easier by this confident base. It took her 37 years to figure things out, but when she finally took the first step by entering into the most difficult conversations, she felt liberated. By simply being her real self, she became more courageous and confident in starting her consultancy business through she is building her own reputation now. Ann has developed the ability to sense inside her body, and release physical tension stored in her connective tissue, using solely the focus of her mind. She has x-rays to show the physical changes resulting from this inner work - including changing the alignment of her eye sockets, the straightening of her neck, the centering of her lower jaw, and the growth of her tooth roots. Ann wants us all to know that we have this incredible power within us, it just takes going further with practices that you may already be doing. As many of you may know, changing what is on our inside, changes what we see on the outside, so it is Ann's belief that we can not only change our personal world, but also our collective world. Ann has a YouTube channel where she shares her journey, explains the connection between the physical and the spiritual, and will be posting videos of how to change the pressing issues of our time. Coddling Of The American Mind is about: "How good intentions and bad ideas are setting up a generation for failure" Well intentioned overprotection from peanut bans in elementary schools through speech codes on campus; are doing more harm than good. But overprotection is just one of the larger trends that we call problems of progress. This refers to bad consequences produced by good social changes. In this episode we cover the three great untruths that seem to have spread:The untruth of fragility: what doesn't kill you makes you weakerThe untruth of emotional reasoning: always trust your feelingsThe untruth of us vs them: life is a battle between good and evil people See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

If you've read any personal development/self-help book out there, you know the importance of gratitude. It sounds simple, but there's a little more to it than just saying what you're grateful for (though that's a big part of it). What about those days where everything wrong is just glaring right at you, and you're really struggling? Do you brush those feelings aside and keep on with the gratitude? Nope, that's what toxic positivity is called. My guest Mollie and I chat about this very topic. We also talked about:The differences between a lack mindset, versus an abundance mindset The work-life “balance” - is that even a thing? (hint: I don't think so...it's more of a blend versus a balance, imo)The feeling of being maxed out, and how gratitude can help to get out of those feelingsThe stigma around MLM, but how joining one can work beautifully for you and your familyWhy the key to starting a gratitude practice is to not have any, zero, outcomes attached Connect with MollieIG: @mollsjimmar BOOKS/RESOURCESQuantum Success by Christy WhitmanAtomic Habits by James ClearMach II with Your Hair on Fire by Richard Bliss BrookeQuantum Energy/Enneagram Coach Whitney Ellison's IG: @wellisonenterprises Find me on IG: @whatabout_themama

Today's episode is one I'm both excited and totally terrified to share with you. It's me, alone on the microphone, opening up about the hardest and most unthinkable thing I've ever dealt with. In this very-close-to-my-heart episode, I'm sharing: A traumatic, tragic loss I've experienced in my life recently and my current thoughts & feelingsThe perspective I've gained from hardship and how we can challenge ourselves to live our best livesA before-and-after glimpse into how a family trip to Ireland deepened my healing3 things grief has taught me that apply to career & businessA powerful & moving excerpt from my journal and the message in my heart about griefIn case you'd like to read the words from my journal, here they are in written format. Per Jess Lively's "writing to your intuition" exercise, I asked myself the following question: Why do I feel this is the episode I need to share? Here was my unedited, un-analyzed gut reaction (I arrived here by just writing without thinking too much):"Your life is not the shiny perfect image that people might see. You are not perfectly courageous and composed. There is so much suffering, and you are afraid. You do not know how the events of the past year will manifest in terms of your family. Questions weigh heavier on your heart than your mind allows you to truly explore. It is too traumatic to completely comprehend. As such, everything (including career) is impacted. There are positives and negatives to this. The negatives are perhaps more obvious — there is stress, bad dreams, unexplained and unexpected tear-filled moments, your anger flairs up in a way that feels out of control. This is all related to the unprocessed mountain of emotion that sits in your heart like a knot. Importantly, do not rush to untie this knot. You cannot untie this knot without the right tools. You do not have all of those tools today, nor do you have all of the puzzle pieces to know how. Instead, this is a project that will be unraveled piece by piece, over time, and there is nothing you can do to speed this process except try to be open to your truth. You know exactly what I mean: it’s that back-and-forth you have in your own mind about whether it is safe to hear your heart’s voice. Sometimes that voice will tell you scary things, or sad things that make you cry. I am here to say IT IS SAFE.More than just safe, it is everything to hear your heart’s voice. Do not be afraid. Or rather, be afraid, but listen anyway. Cry when it hurts. Show yourself and show up. The only thing you have to do is be open and be light. Do not try to be more than exactly what you are, right now."SHOW NOTES:Jess Lively: Things I'm Afraid to Tell You conceptCourage & Clarity Episode 14 with Chase Reeves Courage episode with Cassandra Bodzak Jess Lively: intuition writing exercise&
