Sarah Rossetti, aka Invader Girl, is a Contemporary Acrylic Artist painting evocative scenes of war, veterans, law enforcement and, more recently, horses. Sarah was born in Nonnweiler, Germany in 1987, the oldest of five children—she has a younger sister and two younger brothers. Sarah's other young sister Lisa was tragically killed in 2004; a traumatic event that would impact Sarah in different ways. Her father John was a communications specialist in the Air Force, stationed in Germany where he met his wife Regina. As a military family they moved around and whilst in Germany her parents divorced and Sarah stayed with her mother who moved the family to the island of Guam, eventually helping her in the bar business that she operated. It was there that Sarah met the military personnel whose war stories would leave an impression that has influenced the art genre she specializes in today. Those graphic stories would create powerful images and inform the style of art that has become her trademark. Sarah did not feel at home as a student and once she graduated high school in Guam she bucked the idea of college, preferring to find her own way untutored as an artist. She endured a struggle with alcohol that she eventually won and, realizing that she needed a new direction, she moved to the US in 2017. She married Phil, a retired navy CMC, and after a spell in Alexandria, the couple found their home near Haymarket, which accommodates a large studio. For the time being, Sarah is not represented and prefers not to show her work in galleries. Instead she has a website and takes commissions, and has an impressive work rate of 3-4 paintings a day. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comSarah and Nancy discuss the new documentary, Jussie Smollett: Anatomy of a Hoax, about the fake hate crime of the Empire star who once dubbed himself “the gay Tupac.” The real stars are the Osundairos, two Nigerian brothers and aspiring actors hired for the bizarre stunt. Why did they do it? What was up with that bottle of hot sauce? And is celebrity culture a bigger problem than victim culture? Also: Stanford Law School has a DEI mess following an appearance by Fifth Circuit court judge Kyle Duncan, and once more, ambition overrides judgment (a running theme). Which moment in the 2015 HBO miniseries The Jinx turned Nancy off entirely? Who is the godfather of true crime, and why is it Skip Hollandsworth? The rise and fall of PornHub; yet another glowing recommendation for Jon Ronson's oeuvre; a fascinating convo about journalism's working-class roots; and the mysteries of our Google searches. But don't forget MILF Manor, because Sarah cannot.
Shannon Curtis has been making music for 25 years—first, as the front-woman for a Christian-lite rock band in her twenties while a pastor's wife, then as a chanteuse divorcée composing broken-hearted love songs after leaving both her marriage and her religion. In the last decade—as a result of constant house concert touring—Shannon developed both a passionate underground following and also an album-based songwriting style, centered around taking her audiences on intentional journeys of personal growth, connection, and healing. This remains true on her new 80s-inspired synthpop album, Good to Me, the animating questions behind which are: how will empathetic people survive the troubles of this time? And how we can rescue our overburdened spirits from overlapping disasters such as rising fascism and climate collapse? Shannon offers Good to Me as both a soundtrack and rallying cry for every person who knows that healing ourselves is the first step in healing the world.Connect with Shannon:Shannon's Love Letter ListStream Good to MeShannon's websiteMisfit StarsInstagramMastodonSponsored by Audible. In today's Bonus Episode, CeCe chats with Sarah Cantin, Executive Editor at St. Martin's Publishing Group and the editor of the #BookswithHooksBC pick, The Ballerinas. They discuss what made Sarah fall in love with the submission for The Ballerinas; what “pre-empt” means in an offer/deal; instantly knowing the genre vs pondering the straddling of two genres; the ratio of submissions vs offers; what to do when a book doesn't sell as well as you thought it would; likeable unlikeable protagonists; and Sarah's book recommendations. After which, Bianca chats with Susie Orman Schnall, the award-winning author of We Came Here to Shine, The Subway Girls, The Balance Project and On Grace. They discuss hiring a professional editor to put your best foot forward for querying; rejections from publishers and the importance of talking about them; understanding the hook of your novel; how to manage the anxiety of being a writer; trusting in your agent's capabilities; and allowing yourself to feel shitty, but also remembering to measure your successes and celebrate them as you keep going. Finally, Emilie Sommer joins us from East City Book Shop to answer your comps questions!Find us on our socials:Twitter: @TSNOTYAW @BiancaM_author @carlywatters @ceciliaclyraInstagram: @biancamarais_author @carlywatters @cece_lyra_agent @ the_shit_about_writingFacebook: @tsnotyawWebsite: www.biancamarais.comSarah can be found at @sarahgcantin on TwitterSusie can be found at @susieormanschnall on Instagram and at www.susieschnall.com Emilie can be found at @emiliegsommer on Instagram and East City Book Shop can be found at @eastcitybookshop on Instagram and at @eastcitybooks on Twitter

Today, Sarah Weeger, founder of Hey Weegs a greeting card company that makes cards for real life joins me on the podcast to talk about her journey through anxiety and depression. Her anxiety started in her 7 month of pregnancy with insomnia and was amplified by the birth of her daughter. She looks back an reflects that although it wasn't her daughter job, that is what got her out of bed everyday. Sarah talks about one day she was sitting watching her 6-month-old play instead of being with her and in that moment, she realized this was not the mom she wanted to be, and she needed help. She reminds us that your life doesn't have to be terrible before you start seeking resources. Sarah encourages that the easiest way to start your healing journey is to be honest with yourself and how you feel, This is such a great conversation. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I loved recording it. Please Like, Share, and help Embrace, Live, Thrive continue to grow. Her sweet spot is in designing cards for moms to help them feel seen without trying to fix the problem – because she knows first-hand what it's like to receive cards that try to do otherwise. Today, Sarah shares her story of postpartum depression and anxiety while keeping it real and maintaining her sense of humor – just like her cards.
