Scripture For Today: Exodus 8:28 “Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray for me.”What James Had to Say About Prayer pt 9We have been studying what the Apostle James had to say about prayer. We have been studying the verses from James 5:13-18: “Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any Merry? Let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth by the space of three years and six months! And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit.” Yesterday, we focused on verse 16, “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” We left off yesterday discussing the need for someone to repent of their sins and accept Jesus as their Savior in order to enter into a relationship with the Most High God – who CAN heal them of their sicknesses, etc. Not that God would not do it IF it was His Will to do so… It's just that God cannot bless what He's already cursed. And He has cursed sin. And if the person is living in sin, unrepented sin, willful sin – WHY would God heal him (or her)? The Bible says we are to “cleanse ourselves” of any sin that defiles us. That's in 2 Corinthians 7:1. We can only do that through confession and repentance before God. The Bible says in First John 1:9, “If we CONFESS OUR SINS, He is faithful and just to FORGIVE OUR SINS and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.” So, once again, we see that WE are responsible for cleansing ourselves – and we do that by confession of our sins before God. It is not necessary that we confess them before men. It is not necessary that we confess them one at a time or try to remember them all… “I took a cookie when I was 12 when I wasn't supposed to… I said something mean to my sister when I was 13…” or anything like that. We were BORN in sin. We LIVED in sin. We ENJOYED sin. WE ARE SINNERS – and for those that confessed they are or were sinners – we were, what does scripture say? SAVED BY GRACE! That is what we need to make the sick person understand when they ask us to pray for them – that they NEED to receive Jesus as their Savior and have their sins cleansed once and for all time. Amen! Lead them into that spiritual condition – and THEN pray for their healing. You will be astounded at how fast God raises them up! Why? Because they are His children now! Praise God! Amen! THE WEEK OF TRINITY V - THURSDAYLESSON: ROMANS 5:18-21When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken. Luke 5:8-9We may take Peter here as an example of those who are to believe in the eternal blessings and actually see them. A sinful conscience is by nature so constituted that it does what Peter does here, it flees from its Savior and thinks, “I am not worthy of being saved and sitting among the saints and angels. The experience of all this good is too much for me.” The straitened conscience cannot comprehend the greatest of blessings but thinks as follows, “If I were like St. Peter or St. Paul, I might be able to believe it all.”This is all very foolish, for if you wanted to take your stand on your own holiness, you would be building on sand. Do not do this but follow St. Peter. In regarding himself quite unworthy of such grace, he is really proving his worthiness.It is just because you are a sinner, and realize this fact, that you must trust yourself entirely to God's grace. You must open up your conscience to its widest extent and let your heart swell so that grace may enter in.SL 11:131 (16)PRAYER: We thank and praise You, heavenly Father, for Your friendly approach to us sinners and for the wonderful riches of Your goodness toward us. Scripture For Today: 2 Chronicles 32:27 “The priests and the Levites stood to bless the people, and God heard them, for their prayer reached Heaven, His Holy dwelling place…” The Prayer of Petition pt 9We have been studying about the Prayer of Petition for the last several days. Yesterday, we started to go over the layout of your prayer. We covered opening your prayer by addressing, as Jesus instructed us, to pray to “Our Father in Heaven…” We then went over stating the reason you were making this petition to God. You need to state you purpose for doing so. In detail. Then, we covered listing each one of the scriptures you have researched that pertain in any way whatsoever to your position and purpose. We covered that you need to list, not just the scripture reference, but also the exact scripture, word for word, from the Bible. We then covered that presenting your petition is not going to be accomplished in a 3-5 minute or even a 15 minute prayer session. That is what makes the “Prayer of Petition” so powerful. You need to prepare for and then present your petition just like a lawyer would if appearing before the Supreme Court of the land. Amen! If you were praying for healing in your body, of any kind…but let's say it is a very serious disease, cancer or something… Do you want to pray a 10 second prayer “Oh, God, please heal me…” Or would you like to present your case, in detail, taking an hour or more… laying out WHY God should heal you? And it's not so you can go to the beach next weekend. Amen! I know that probably stepped on somebody's toes somewhere. But don't shout me down when I'm preaching good. Just like you would ask the judge in court to find you not guilty so you could go the beach with your family next weekend, you need to provide evidence of WHY you should have your petition answered. And you do that by going deep in your research, laying out your case and taking all the time you need to present a convincing argument to the JUDGE OF ALL THINGS. Amen! For example, if you were presenting a petition for healing, you could say something to the effect of: “I claim my healing according to the following scriptures that YOUR WORD has already established as fact: In Isaiah 53:5, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” In 1 Peter 2:24, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” You can then add verses from the Bible where people have actually received their healings when requested to be healed. This backs up the foundation of your request. Amen You could go on and list, one by one, 100 different verses of scripture. This is simply evidence that God has granted petitions like yours before. You are establishing precedent. Amen! God is not a respecter of persons. What He did for one, He can and will do for you. By these scriptures in sequence, or, if you want, in some other type of logical layout – it BUILDS YOUR FAITH at the same time. As your Faith starts to grow, it becomes more powerful, more real. Way down deep in your inner Spirit man, you are becoming a Faith Powerhouse. And remember, it finally comes to a point where Jesus says, “Do you believe I can do this?” By the time you finish your prayer, and He asks you that, you will be “OH, YES JESUS! I BELIEVE!” And then, your Spirit man will hear, “According to your Faith, be it unto you…” Where will YOUR FAITH be at that point? If you follow this teaching, it will be sky high by the time this moment happens! Amen! Let's leave it there for today. Tomorrow, I'm thinking we will be able to conclude this segment on “the prayer of petition.” But, let's see what the Holy Spirit has to say about that tomorrow. Amen! When I started this series,...

We are excited about what's ahead for us as we dive into this new community of churches who are committed to the centrality of the gospel and the mission to plant churches everywhere. Acts 29 is a diverse, global community of healthy, multiplying churches characterized by theological clarity, cultural engagement, and missional innovation. On Sunday during the teaching time, I'll be helping us get familiarized with our new family by looking at why Acts 29 exists, what we believe, want to be known for, and how we measure success. The Apostle Paul writes that, “We are God's fellow workers. You are God's field, God's building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). The Road To the Resurrection Pt 3 I AM the Resurrection & the Life By Louie Marsh, 3-21-2021 1) Jesus exposes His TRUE IDENTITY. “25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life…(John 11:25–26, ESV) Jesus says ego eimi – I AM This is the Greek version of what first said to Moses Jesus clearly says He is “13Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ”” (Exodus 3:13–14, ESV) 2) The resurrection is more than a historical event – it’s only meaningful in CHRIST. “25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life…(John 11:25–26, ESV) Resurrection = “rising up from among the corpses” “9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.” (Romans 6:9, ESV) 3) Jesus embodies authentic spiritual LIFE. “25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life…(John 11:25–26, ESV) Two big words for life in the NT – bios – biological life, and Zoe – spiritual life. As you can see about 3/4s of the time the word life is Zoe. “The Resurrection is one manifestation of the Life: it is involved in the Life” (Westcott). Note the article with both ἀναστασις [anastasis] and ζωη [zōē]. Jesus had taught the future resurrection often (6:39), but here he means more, even that Lazarus is now alive. Though he die (καν ἀποθανῃ [kan apothanēi]). “Even if he die,” condition (concession) of third class with και ἐαν [kai ean] (καν [kan]) and the second aorist active subjunctive of ἀποθνησκω [apothnēskō] (physical death, he means). Yet shall he live (ζησεται [zēsetai]). Future middle of ζαω [zaō] (spiritual life, of course - Robertson, A. T. (1933). Word Pictures in the New Testament 4) This DEMANDS a response of faith from me. “25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”” “27She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”” (John 11:25–27, ESV) “24Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.” (John 5:24–29, ESV) 5) This demands I live DIFFERENTLY because of it. “35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:35–37, ESV)

How do make myself right with God? Do I need to attend the right church regularly, get baptized, take communion? Do I need to follow all of the 10 commandments, and the strict calendar and dietary laws of the Old Testament? If you typed the question, "How do Christians believe you have to do to be saved from Hell," into your internet search engine, you would find all of those answers, and many more.This is the question that divided the Protestants from the Catholics. And today it divides many who call themselves "Christian."But if we look at Scripture, the answer is very plain. In fact, the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to a group of churches in Galatia, that answers that question emphatically. His answer is that "by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9We are saved entirely because of God's favor toward us. We didn't and can't earn our salvation. Our rebellious nature covers every decision we make and everything we do. Like wet Oregon mud covers white Converse sneakers, it’s impossible to get rid of on our own.God is absolutely perfect, in him there is no darkness at all so sin and the stench of sin is not allowed in His presence. A few years ago I had a sewage line under my house break and I had to crawl through that muck and fix and replace the pipe and then clean up the mess. If I would have walked into the house afterwards and said to my wife come and give me a hug she would have been unable to even though she loves me because the stench was so bad. And let me tell you the stench of our sins is way worse than that, but when we confess our sins, Jesus promises to forgive us. He doesn’t ridicule us or shame us; He welcomes us in and cleans us up. Through Jesus’ forgiveness, our sin is removed and our relationship with God is restored. Without the barrier of sin, we can run into the arms of a loving God where we find real, lasting joy.Reflect: What, if anything, keeps you from having complete joy in God and with others?Is there anything you need to be forgiven for today? Take a few minutes today to ask Jesus for the forgiveness He promises to give.Forgiveness is yours! “Lip or Life Service?” Matthew 21:28-32This Week’s Core Practice: Single-mindedness I focus on God and His priorities for my life.Matthew 6: 24, 31-33“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.Scripture: Matthew 21:28-3128 “ But what do you think? And he answered and said, ‘ I go, sir, ’ but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father? ” They said to Him, “ The first. ”Jesus said to them, “ Assuredly, I say to you that tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; and when you saw it, you did not afterward relent and believe him.The Message of this Passage:From the Ligonier”s Ministry: “Jesus in today’s passage uses His discussion of John the Baptist’s authority with the religious leaders in Jerusalem as a springboard to explain why judgment is coming upon those covenant-breaking Israelites who believe themselves falsely to be God’s true people. The parable of the two sons is the first of three consecutive parables in which our Lord condemns faithless Israelites.The point of today’s parable is straightforward, namely, that it is better to obey without promising than it is to promise and not obey. As Scripture tells us elsewhere, words mean nothing if there are no deeds to back them up. It is easy to profess the truth, but our Father in heaven also demands that we do the truth as well. Those who initially refuse to submit to God but then turn to Him are His children, not those who honor Him with their lips and yet have hearts that never serve Him.Of course, the priests and elders believe they are represented by the obedient son. Jesus, however, has a different estimation. The tax collectors and prostitutes, those whom the leaders see as farthest from the kingdom, are those who in hearing the preaching of John and Jesus have recognized their poverty of Spirit and repented. John Calvin comments that although they are great sinners, “they are greatly preferable to the scribes and Pharisees in this respect, that they do not continue to the end in their vices, but, on the contrary, submit gently and obediently to the yoke which they had fiercely rejected.” It is the son who does not follow through on his pledge that represents the Jerusalem authorities; they have not seen their desperate need of forgiveness and consequently, have not turned from their sin (v. 32; see 3:7–10).Being able to discern the faithful son is actually an act of self-indictment on the part of the leaders. If they can rightly choose as faithful the son who left his disobedience, surely they must also be able to discern in themselves their own lack of righteousness and need of the Savior. Yet they never acknowledge their guilt. Let us never be so confident in our own goodness that we fail to recognize our need of repentance and forgiveness.For Personal Reflection and Discussion:What is the truth contained in the main point of this parable?What motivated the parableWhat is Jesus’ personal application of the parable? Philip said to [Jesus], “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip?” John 14:8-9We honor two of the Apostles today, Philip and James the Lesser. We know very little about James other than that he was chosen by our Lord for the apostolic ministry. We also have one of his letters which is contained in the New Testament. After the Resurrection, Jesus appeared to James who eventually went to Jerusalem and led the Church for a few decades, eventually being stoned as a martyr.Philip is known from some of his comments that appear to reveal a weakness of faith. In addition to the comment above, recall when Jesus was preparing to multiply the fish and loaves and asked Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” (John 6:5). Philip’s response was, “Two hundred days’ wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit]” (John 6:7). But Jesus was testing Philip and, unfortunately, he failed the test.But Philip did not continue to fail in his faith. Recall, also, that Philip is the one who was inspired to baptize the Ethiopian eunuch in the Acts of the Apostles. Eventually, tradition states that Philip preached in Greece, Phrygia, and Syria. He and Saint Bartholomew were said to have been crucified upside down. Tradition holds that Philip preached upside down from the cross until his death.In the end, James and Philip gave their lives for Christ, holding nothing back. But it took time for them to grow in faith and confidence in Jesus. This is a significant witness for our lives.Ideally, our response to Jesus every day will be that of a complete submission to Him and perfect trust in His divine will. Ideally, we will not lack faith.However, it’s most likely the case that all of us can look back at many moments in our lives and point to ways in which we have failed in our faith and trust in our Lord. Though this is sin, it’s good to look at these moments of weakness in the light of the mercy of God. Jesus saw the weakness of Philip, addressed it, but continued to love him and continued to call him down the path chosen for him. Jesus does the same with each one of us.Reflect, today, upon any ways that you can identify with the doubts and weaknesses of the Apostle Philip. See those weaknesses for what they are: your sin. But allow yourself to grow in hope today as we honor Philip and James. The Lord never gave up on them and He will not give up on you. He continued to call them to a holy and sacred ministry, and He will continue to do the same for you.Lord, I thank You for never giving up on me, even when I sin and turn away from You. Help me to persevere in my faith in You and to answer the call to radically follow You wherever You lead. Sts. James and Philip, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in You.

What We Heard: The call to be a dad is a hard but incredibly important calling that will have a lasting impact on your family for generations to come.Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. Deutoronomy 6:4-9We have been called to daily impress the word of God on our kid’s hearts and to raise them to be Godly young men and women. This does not happen by accident but by being very intentional in how we parent. There are a lot of things in life that we can outsource, schooling, sports, lessons, but faith cannot be something we outsource. The church’s role is not to be the primary spiritual leaders in their life. The churches role is to come alongside dads and help them to be the primary spiritual leader in the home. What It Means: There are many challenges families will be faced with. Here are a few of the most common challenges parents face. Challenge #1: ScheduleWe live in a culture where we are constantly on the go, and with all we have going on plus our kids’ extracurricular activities, it is very easy to get our priorities out of order. Church and our own spiritual walk tend to be the first activities cut from our schedules. When we put our priorities in the wrong order we can expect that our kids will too. Parenting has never been easy but Life seems to have become more complex. We have more choices than ever before, and more choices cause more anxiety. Now more than ever we need to practice self-control in our families so that we can keep our priorities straight. Challenge #2: Social Media Social media itself isn’t bad but it does require boundaries. Dads need to be very engaged and aware of what their kids are doing on social media. When dads watch what their kids are doing it sends a signal that what they are doing matters. Challenge #3: SexMore than 40% of dads don’t have these conversations until after a child has been sexually active. Most young boys see their first pornographic image by age 8. Our kids will hear and learn about sex from friends at school, tv, movies etc…As dads and spiritual leaders, we should be talking about this topic early and often. Our kids will be bombarded by this topic from our culture, this is why it is so important to not just have “The talk” but multiple “talks” We should start early impressing a biblical worldview on their life. Our kids need to understand that God’s word is authoritative. What We Do Next: Be the example. You can’t be a spiritual leader if you are not a Spirit follower. Just as Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1:11, Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. Be intentional. It takes hard work and energy. Plan out time to have spiritual conversations with your kids every day. Be engaged. Just like we learned from Deuteronomy 6. We need to be teaching our children about Jesus during all aspects of our life. Your Presence matters.Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Daniel BoydPraying and ThinkingPhilippians 4:5b-9We have been working through the imperatives of this final section. Paul exhorts his readers to be mimickers in 3:17, to stand firm in 4:1 (repeated from 1:27), and to rejoice in 4:4 (repeated from 2:17-18 and 3:1).The verses we'll cover this morning are perhaps some of the most familiar passages of Scripture. I think after John 3:16 these were some of the very first verses I committed to memory. This is a precious passage of Scripture, which has encouraged me at many times in my life and it has been refreshing to study these verses again this past week. I hope that you are equally blessed this morning.Wisdom for Every-day LifeTHEOLOGY (verse 5b)Verse 5b is grammatically unconnected to the previous statement about “your kindness”, which is why I did not include it in the last sermon. However, it is equally unconnected to verse 6. This statement about the nearness of God stands as a grammatical Island between two topics: Disagreement in the Church (2-5a) and Prayer (6-7).This statement, however, introduces Paul's discussion on prayer and stands as a heading over this next section of Pauline exhortations. God is near. This theological truth has tremendous practical implications, which he develops in verses 6-9.Another example of a Pauline theological constructIn chapter one Paul introduces a theological statement about God's sovereign work in our lives (1:6) and applies that truth to His own situation: being jailed has resulted in a gospel witness throughout the Roman Praetorian Guard (1:12-14).PRACTICE (verse 6)Paul places two statements opposite each other. The first is negative: do not do this; the second is positive: do this. The first naturally leads into the second.Do not be anxious about anythingThe word for anxious is the same that he used of Timothy and his genuine concern for the Church (2:19). In that context it was a positive concern for the Church. The context here clearly leads us to a negative concern. It reminds me of Christ's words in the sermon on the mount to not be concerned about the things of tomorrow - what do I wear; what do I eat?The “anything” is all encompassing… there should not be anything that takes us so captive that it dominates our concern. My counseling professor has a statement that I think is particularly helpful here: worry is the sinful application of the creativity God built in us.Connecting this to the theology of verse 5: God's nearness should have profound implication for our worries: why worry when God is so near to us?Let your requests be made known to God. Following the “but” is the positive action. God's nearness should drive us to relating to Him. The passive voice of this verb is interesting to me. Paul is deliberately describing a situation where we reveal something to God. It is impossible for us to reveal something to an omniscient God… and yet for the sake of relationship this is exactly what Paul describes. And he is very specific in how we should do this: through prayer and supplicationwith thanksgiving - Prayer and supplication. The first term is the general term for prayer, the second is a more urgent pleading. Both describe actions of prayer. - Thanksgiving is the attitude that oversees the prayer and supplication (never ask without saying thank you). - The content of the prayer is called “your request”, which simply refers to the content of your communication. - And God is the direct object: He is who we pray to.God's nearness gives us someone to talk to about the things in life that would cause us worry. He asks us to tell Him about it, share our feelings, and then to deposit them as thankful requests.RESULT (verse 7)God's nearness and our acknowledging of His nearness brings God's peace. A peace that guards our hearts and minds and surpasses understanding. What a wonderful description of what God does for us. The word used for “guard” is the same that Peter uses in his description of God's power guarding our inheritance in heaven. Worry takes place in our minds and captures our heart (we can make really bad decisions when we are worried)... these are the areas that God's peace guards us. Right where we need it. God is near.Secondly, this peace rises above (literally) our comprehension. Peace in the midst of the storm… a calm in the middle of struggle… God is near and worry isn't gone, but He calms my heart.Verses 8-9We can get really difficult about verse 8 or we can simply realize that Paul is widening the scope concerning our thinking and suggesting that in life we should think about the things God wants us to think about. Since so much of our trouble starts in our thinking, Paul suggests we coach our thinking.Secondly he enjoins us to apply the things we have learned. Just like he has done here… apply theology to life.The last statement in verse 9 seems like it could be conditional, as in: if you do these things the God of peace will be with you. That is not what the original language dictates… is it rather a connective statement, as in: and (in case you forgot already) the God of peace will be with you. He reaches back to the theology of verse 5 and brings it all full circle.Paul gives us great encouragement in the midst of life… wisdom for every-day life… don't worry: pray. And when you finish praying: think God's thoughts. Peace will surround you and guard you. God is near.
