May 19, 2021 - Why did Judas betray Jesus?Mark 14:10-11What was Judas doing when he betrayed Jesus? If the religious leaders were going to arrest Jesus anyway, what did Judas have to offer them? Let's find out together as we study Mark 14:10-11. Then ask yourself:Do I want God to answer my on my own timetable?
Romans 1:18-21 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.Everyone knows God.Romans 1:21,25 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened…who exchanged the truth of God for the lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Everyone has rejected God.Romans 3:9-11What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. As it is written:“There is none righteous, no, not one;There is none who understands. There is none who seeks after God.Everyone is guilty.Romans 3:19-20 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.Everyone is condemned.Romans 3:21-26 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Everyone can be saved.Romans 3:27Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.Everyone can be saved by faith in Jesus alone.Romans 10:13-15 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? Everyone who puts their faith in Jesus is commanded to make him known.

God is many things, but a genie in a bottle isn’t one of them. Instead, Jesus is offering us a helpful way of approaching God with our requests. But prayer is more than just asking. It’s also about listening to God and discerning what we truly need, and then practicing consistent, radical dependence on the Father whose extravagant, generous love is just waiting to meet us in our place of need. Discussion Questions What was your biggest takeaway from the teaching? You’ve probably heard the saying, “You have not because you ask not!” In what ways have you experienced that to be true in life? Sometimes we have no idea what we need, and we need God’s voice to help us name it. What does it look like in your life to listen to God? Where do you go? What do you do to hear God’s voice? (Silence? Going for a run? Etc.?) How do you feel about the characterization of God as a good father who loves extravagantly? Would you agree that practicing dependence in a culture that idolizes independence is a critical way for people to embody God’s kingdom? Why or why not? How will you begin living out the truths of this teaching this week? .fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-9{width:100% !important;margin-top : -25px;margin-bottom : 0px;}.fusion-builder-column-9 > .fusion-column-wrapper {padding-top : 0px !important;padding-right : 0px !important;margin-right : 0%;padding-bottom : 0px !important;padding-left : 0px !important;margin-left : 0%;}@media only screen and (max-width:1000px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-9{width:100% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-column-9 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}@media only screen and (max-width:640px) {.fusion-body .fusion-builder-column-9{width:100% !important;order : 0;}.fusion-builder-column-9 > .fusion-column-wrapper {margin-right : 1.92%;margin-left : 1.92%;}}.fusion-body .fusion-flex-container.fusion-builder-row-10{ padding-top : 0px;margin-top : 0px;padding-right : 0px;padding-bottom : 0px;margin-bottom : 0px;padding-left : 0px;}

A heartwarming journey through the life of an artist. Learn about the musicality hidden in daily life and the places where mathematics and art come together. Here are the extraordinary tales of an instrument designer who has followed his calling against all odds.Dmitry is a professional designer of concert-grade violins, as well as a musician, mentor, and entrepreneur. Dmitry started playing violin at the age of 8, becoming a member of La Petite Bande, a Belgian ensemble famous for playing baroque music, and selling out concerts as a solo performer. As a child in Soviet Russia, he couldn’t afford to buy an instrument which could properly showcase his talent. Frustrated by the sounds produced by the basic violin he had, he decided to rebuild his instrument to improve his own performance at the age of 11. He had a successful career as a master violin-maker.But in January 2013, Dmitry had a massive stroke, which almost killed him and left him paralysed down his left side. Doctors told him he would have to relearn how to walk and then broke the devastating news that he was unlikely to ever play the violin again. Now at 51, Dmitry offers online training for instrument makers, teaching them how to create pieces which stand out from the crowd and tell a story.Quotes to remember: “When you walk along the streets of ancient European cities, you will see literally a symphony in tone.” “When a musician can really fulfill their musical dreams, I would say it’s priceless.” “It completely makes no sense doing exactly what everyone else is doing… It is time to do things differently in this art.” Takeaways:Ancient masters understood sound, space, and instrument-making better than modern peoplePeople will discourage you when you try something differentIn Pythagoreanism, people believed that there are musical underpinnings to the world and universal systemsSounds are different proportions that create harmonicsOlder instruments don’t necessarily sound better than new instruments, due to advancements in craft and constructionHave full faith in your true calling and go for it no matter what What you’ll learn:How Dmitry got into violin-making at the age of 11What inspired him to study the art of violin making beyond the level of most instrument makersWhy he quit violin making, and how he returned to itWhy the violin is shaped the way it isHow Dmitry cracked the code of the ancient masters and designs custom instrumentsHow he recreated the violoncello da spalla, an instrument that is essentially extinctMentioned on the podcast: https://badiarovviolins.com/jp/The Authentic Instrument Makers AcademyLa Petite BandePablo NassarreThe Lives of the Artists - Giorgio VasariThe Violoncello da Spalla, introduced by Sigiswald KuijkenLinks:FacebookInstagramYoutube

How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opening and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Crossing the River Jordan W/ SOMEBODY 2 Kings 2:11What is the big deal with Elijah?Why are the disciples questioning Jesus on the way down the Transfiguration Mountain about this guy?Why are the Jews so confused about him?Why is John the Baptist more in the "Spirit and Power of Elijah" than the actual transfigured Elijah that they just saw?We'll go to 2 Kings 2 today to jump to the last moments of Elijah's life. He literally "crosses the River Jordan" (and invents the term) and then gets taken up into heaven while he is with his Mentee Elisha. The last thing that the older asks the younger: WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU? Elijah asks this as his last question. Fantastic.Practical points today: Who is your Elisha? Who are you walking with and talking with and mentoring? What are the names of the people that you are serving in a "What can I do for you" type of way? If you have been a Christian for more than 5 years, you'd better have a list. Listen as we see a fabulous example of FINISHING WELL. Tomorrow we will see what happens to his spirit and how it just might end up in John, 880 years later.
Acts 23:6-11What was Paul's hope? What is our hope? Our hope is not what the culture wants it to be. And increasingly, it is not what is popular in the mainstream "Christian" world. Introduction: We All Need Grace (John 8:1-11): But we don't often Give it. (John 8:3-5) Leviticus 20:10 - If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. Am I a gracious person? Deep down, am I still angry with someone who wronged me, ever after they apologize? Are there broken relationships in my life that I refuse to heal? Do I believe certain people don't deserve forgiveness? When someone messes up, do I prefer to criticizing their mistakes over praying for them to get to a better place? But we don't often Recognize our need for it. (John 8:6-9) But we don't often Understand it. (John 8:10-11) Sermon Notes (PDF): BLANKHint: Highlight blanks above for answers! He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it: “I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.”Epistle Reading -- Romans 6:1–11What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the third chapter.Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Church branding has become a more popular than ever. But what exactly is it?What is a brand? Start by what it isn’t:- it isn’t a logo- It isn’t a product- It isn’t your most successful ministry- It isn’t the quality of your outreachA brand is made up of those things, but at the end of the day, a brand is the entirety of someone’s perception of you from their perspective. This perception is what drives how someone decides to behave.Sometimes this gets abstract, so let me share some stories.We have a van that always breaks down. My perception of the brand is far more than the logo or the iconic look of the car. The brand has a negative connotation because of how it delivered on it’s promises.We have a car that seems to keep going despite our lack of care for it. I have a positive view of the brand because I can’t seem to break it. This vehicle overdelivered on its promises.I have used a certain brand of computer for a long time with great success. Lately though, it seems like the promises aren’t being delivered on as consistently. So my perception of the brand is changing.- Not a bad single experience, and eroding wholistic experience. When you stop delivering on what you promise, people will leave over time.Who contributes to a church brand?Congregation - the way that those in your church family live their lives outside the wall of the church has heavy influence on the perception of the church. Interestingly, it also informs the perception of the capital C church. And even Christ.This is is why pursuing Biblical instruction when it comes to the function of the ministry of the church is so importantChurch Staff - You are being looked at more closely on all these thingsEvery decision you make says something about what you value. Church Leadership - Your decisions are modeling the behavior that the Christian in your church thinks they should model. You need to be making decisions that are biblical, and that move your congregation to recognize that scripture is what defines their direction, not just to you. But they will look heavily to you and the decisions you make!How do you define the brand?- Defining what your church is known for isn’t really up to your preference–it’s up to scripture- While we aren’t in complete control of the brand, we can encourage people toward something.- Scripture tells us where to point them!Throughout scripture we see things that point to behaviors the church should be known for. Some keys:The church is about Christ, not the senior pastor, worship team, local outreach, social impact, look and feel, design, student programs, kids programs or facilities. It is about Christ. - 3 JohnMaking disciples, baptizing them - Matthew 28:16-20Unity - Romans 14:19Humility, peace filled - Romans 12:16Restoration, Peace - 2 Corinthians 13:11What you may notice in this is that any church’s brand will be defined by the believers that are a part of your body, not by things you control. And it should be. Your church should be pointing people to Christ. Whenever I have conversations about branding, I can’t help but think of James 1:22 "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."So then, what is the value of as strong church brand? That’s what we will focus on next week. We are going to look at the role of brand in the church, and an example of how our branding (logo and brand strategy) can help contribute to what we learned about today.Bottom line:No logo, mission statement, tagline or ad campaign can overcome the impact of a congregation that is not living in line with the biblical mandates that have been placed on their lives. We have to acknowledge this or we will become embittered

Day or Night people?1 Thessalonians 5:1-11What you already know (1-2)Paul appeals (as he did in chapter 1) to personal knowledge. They already know about certain things. He uses a few phrases that need explanation:>Times and seasonsThese are two terms - the first referring to measurable time like on a calendar or clock and the second referring to seasons or events by which time is marked - that are used in Scripture to refer to God's final plans for Israel… the end-times events. The disciples ask about the end times in this manner. (Acts 1:7; 17:26)>The Day of the LordThis was used by the Old testament Prophets and denotes the day when God will intervene in history to vindicate His chosen people, destroy their enemies, and establish His kingdom. (Isaiah 13:9-11, Joel 2:28-32)>Thief in the NightThis was an image that Christ used in describing the sudden nature of this judgment. (Matthew 24:42-43)They didn't need instruction, because they already knew the theology of what to expect.What they don't know (3)Unbelievers are unaware of God's plan and will be unprepared for His coming. It will be swift, sudden and vehement. Like a woman going into labor, it overcomes you and it will be excruciating. Judgment is certain.What you need to know (4-10)Paul contrasts the life of an unbeliever with that of a believer and challenges the believer to stop living like an unbeliever. Why? Look at verse 10. You are not destined to receive judgment. You are to be saved. So, put on the armor and stop living like you don't know.

To follow Him is to go where He goes and do what He does with Him.Someone gave me a packet of giant pumpkin seeds, but I didn't do anything with them, so I have no giant pumpkins.2 Peter 1:1-2Through the grace and righteousness of Jesus, you have been given a faith of equal standing with that of Peter's and the other apostles!If that's true, then why is the experience of most of us different than that of the apostles?2 Peter 1:3-4If someone gave you a new, high-powered Macbook laptop computer and made sure that your electric bill was all paid up and you had unlimited high-speed internet wi-fi, what would you do with it? That's what God is asking us about this faith He's given us. What are we going to build on it?2 Peter 1:5-7 - 5For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. A look at the meaning of the key Greek words used here, with the help of Helps Word Studies:supplement = epixorēgéō lavishly supply, as it is suitable (apt) to outfit all that is needed to accomplish a grand objective.Make every effort to lavishly supply with these things in order to accomplish God's grand objective for your life.virtue = arétē moral goodness; moral excellence; righteousness. This is the same word as used of God at the end of verse 3.Supplement your faith with virtue. As you are walking with Jesus, you will do the same things He does, not through your strength, but through His. It's the natural fruit of faith.Galatians 5:22-25knowledge = gnṓsis functional ("working") knowledge gleaned from first-hand (personal) experience, connecting theory to application; "application-knowledge," gained in (by) a direct relationship.Supplement virtue with knowledge. This knowledge is knowing how your relationship with Him works out in your daily life and ministry.Acts 4:13self-control = egkráteia (from en, "in the sphere of" and krátos, "dominion, mastery") dominion within – proceeding out from within oneself, but not by oneself. For the believer, self-control can only be accomplished by the power of the Lord. Supplement your knowledge with self-control. Knowledge shows you what to do, but self-control enables you to put it into practice. John 15:5steadfastness = perseverance, patient waiting for hypomonḗ (from hypó, "under" and ménō, "remain, endure") – properly, remaining under, endurance; steadfastness, especially as God enables the believer to "remain (endure) under" the challenges He allots in life. Supplement your self-control with perseverance. What will you do when the going gets tough, or when everything seems to be going great?James 1:12godliness = eusébeia (from eú "well" and sébomai, "venerate, pay homage") – properly, someone's inner response to the things of God which shows itself in godly piety (reverence). eusébeia ("godly heart-response") naturally expresses itself in reverence for God Supplement your steadfastness with godliness. We must learn to take Him seriously and treat Him with the honor and worship He is due.brotherly affection = philadelphía (from phílos, "loving friend" and adelphós, "a brother") – properly, affection for the brethren (fellow-believers). Supplement your godliness with brotherly affection. If we've got the right way to reverence and relate to the Lord our Heavenly Father, then we also need to grow in fellowship with all other believers, our brothers and sisters in God's family. What does our Father God think when we reject our brothers and sisters over disagreements, offenses, or differences?Psalm 133:1-3love = agápē – properly, love which centers in moral preference. So too in secular ancient Greek, (agápē) focuses on preference; likewise the verb form (agapáō) in antiquity meant "to prefer". In the NT, (agápē) typically refers to divine love (= what God prefers) John 15:12-13Finally, supplement your brotherly affection with love. We are to not only fellowship with other believers, but to sacrifice for them.What are the results of all this building or supplementing to the faith, the relationship with Him He's given to us through Jesus Christ?2 Peter 1:8-11What a tragedy and what a waste for us believers to end life being ineffective and unfruitful in our relationship with Jesus! All of us, young and old, need to actively participate in Jesus' personalized discipleship program for us, following Him through life step by step, day by day. He has rich rewards waiting at the end of this path for those of us who walk with Him.2 Peter 1:12-15Have you heard any of these things before? That's okay. We drill God's truths into you so that they will become concrete reality in your life, and that you will pass them on to the next generation.
