Title: A Time to Reason and A Time to Leave Text: Acts 19:8-10 FCF: We all struggle doing what God has commanded to grow His church. Prop: Because God will gather and grow His church, we must make disciples of those who are willing to hear. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to Acts chapter 19. In a moment we'll read from the Legacy Standard Bible starting in verse 8. You can follow along in the pew bible or whatever version you prefer. Last week Paul arrived in Ephesus to find Jews whose profession was somewhat questionable. Paul searched for evidence of the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence, and discovered that the 12 men before him were not yet believers in Jesus as their Messiah. After sharing the gospel with these men, they believed and submitted to baptism in His name. The Spirit descended upon them afterward confirming that even Baptistic Jews could become part of the assembly of Christ. Today we will have the first two years of the third missionary journey summarized for us in only a couple scenes. Luke is not recording the book of Acts as an exact history but rather evidence that the faith Theophilus received was genuine and trustworthy. Luke then is describing more how the gospel spread throughout the Roman Empire rather than giving all the details of its expansion. So please stand with me to give honor to and focus on the reading of the Word of God. Invocation: Sovereign Lord, we approach You today to meet You again in Your word. We ask that You will be with us, and that You will send Your Spirit among us to grow our faith through the means of grace found in Your word preached. We ask that You will show us Your providential control of Your church and our place in its gathering and growth. Help us Lord to play our parts well, not for our glory and not even for the sake of those to whom we minister, but for Your glory and Yours alone. We ask this in the name of Your dear Son… Amen. Transition: [Slide 2] In the game of pool, you use a cue ball to strike other billiard balls into pockets along the table. If after you pocketed a ball, I asked you what knocked the ball in, you could reply in a number of different ways. To some degree you could say that the cue ball knocked in the ball. This is somewhat true, but in reality, we all know that cue balls don't spontaneously begin moving. As Newton observed, objects at rest tend to stay at rest unless an outside force acts upon them. So, you wouldn't be wrong that the cue ball pocketed the other ball – but you wouldn't really be right either. It would be the same if you said the cue stick pocketed the ball. Surely the cue stick and the cue ball played their part, but ultimately, we'd all have to agree at some point that the player… you… knocked it in. We have observed many times in the book of Acts that the Lord is at work to expand and guide His church. We've seen this over and over again, and news flash, we'll see it again today. But alongside that truth we have also seen that God often uses human agents to accomplish His purposes. God is gathering and growing His children and preparing them for the kingdom that is coming. He does this often by using His own people. It may be the player that knocks in the ball, but the cue ball doesn't let that get in the way of doing its job to the best of its ability. Ok, bad example, the cue ball doesn't make choices on its own. But if you understand the analogy – why would we want to be anything else other than God's cue ball… Let's look at verse 8. I.) God is still gathering and growing His church, so we must share the gospel cogently and compellingly. (8) a. [Slide 3] 8 - And after he entered the synagogue, he continued speaking out boldly for three months, i. Luke continues to record the key events that took place as the third missionary journey began. ii. Paul arrives in Ephesus and after seeing 12 men come to Christ from Baptistic Judaism, he immediately goes to the Jew first with the gospel of their own Messiah. iii. He enters the synagogue and continues to speak boldly for three months. iv. There are a number of details we should notice here. 1. First, Ephesus is the capital city of the Roman province of Asia. It is the center for trade in the eastern part of the empire. It boasted around 250,000 citizens, which does not include slaves. Not to mention the number of people who used this city for travel throughout the empire. This was a massive city. At any given time, it would not be a stretch to think there could have been a million people roaming the streets. 2. Paul is said to go to a synagogue, singular. But with a city this large, and if Josephus is to be believed, with such a large Jewish population, it is more than likely that there were several synagogues in the city. 3. Why then would Paul only go to one of them? 4. It is possible that Luke uses the word synagogue to speak of the system itself and not one particular building. 5. It is also possible that Paul only went to the synagogue closest to him. Synagogues tended to divide along certain perspectives on the Jewish faith. It may be that this particular synagogue would have been the one closest to the teachings of Christ and most likely to receive Him in true faith. 6. In any case, Paul goes to this synagogue in the city of Ephesus and speaks for 3 months. 7. This detail in and of itself is an anomaly to all the book of Acts. 8. Paul has never been able to continue long in preaching in the synagogues before he was run out and rejected. 9. 3 months is easily the longest he's been able to continue to speak. 10. And Luke points out to us that it isn't because he was being slow to reveal the truth or softspoken about it either. Instead, he spoke boldly about the truth of the gospel… b. [Slide 4] reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. i. Paul boldly engaged them with the gospel from a logical and persuasive level. ii. Paul, although the first to admit that it is the Spirit's power that regenerates and enables men to receive faith in Christ, does not take that to mean that he can be flippant or unpolished in his presentation of the gospel message. iii. Paul uses logic to assert that the gospel is a valid and reasonable conclusion based on the Old Testament Scriptures. iv. Paul uses sound arguments to prove that this Jesus is the Messiah prophesied of old. v. From an epistemological standpoint, Paul attacks the strongholds of false belief and false thinking while defending the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. vi. Paul is an example to all of us, that though the triune God leads to the conversion of a man's soul – the human agent must be faithful to present a cogent and compelling argument for the gospel. c. [Slide 5] Summary of the Point: If anyone ever had a reason to utterly give up on a people group, it would have been Paul. How many times has he been run out of synagogues? How many times have his own people rejected the gospel? How many times have the Jews chased Paul out of town? Yet here he is, once again, sharing the gospel with the Jews. But the Lord blessed him in Ephesus. Many were persuaded. Many believed what Paul taught about the kingdom of God. Paul didn't give up. Why? Because he knew that God is still gathering and growing His church from all the nations of the earth. To the Jew first and also to the Greek. Because he knew this, Paul did all he could to reason and persuade his countrymen of the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He gave a message that was cogent and compelling. Not because that is what wins people to faith in Christ… but because that is what pleases our Lord Jesus. To speak well of the hope we have in us. And guess what CBC? God is still gathering and growing His church today. In Columbus, in Michigan, in the USA, and in all the world, the Lord is still gathering and growing His church. We are part of that grand plan. What is our part to play? Well certainly some of our part is to share the gospel cogently and compellingly. We must present a well-reasoned, logical, powerful, and persuasive gospel of Jesus… because that is what the gospel of Jesus Christ is. The gospel itself is well reasoned, logical, powerful, and persuasive. Transition: [Slide 6 (blank)] But this is not the whole responsibility placed on us as God continues His plan to gather and grow His church. We have more to do than simply to present the gospel in a logical and persuasive manner. Let's look at what happens when Paul encounters resistance. II.) God is still gathering and growing His church, we must use our time and energy efficiently for the growth of Kingdom citizens. (9-10) a. [Slide 7] 9 - But when some were becoming hardened and were not believing, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, i. After three months of reasoning and persuading many about the kingdom of God with Jesus as the head of this Kingdom, eventually Paul met familiar resistance. ii. Something is happening here in the text that we need to see in order to really understand what these Jews are doing. iii. In quick succession Luke uses an imperfect passive verb, followed by an imperfect active verb, followed by a present active participle. iv. Perhaps you think I just spoke in tongues

In the midst of so much upheaval in the world, negative news, so much noise and fear, it is easy to lose your peace and focus all that is going wrong around you. There are noises that begin to reach our heart, noises that take away our peace: the noise of illness, the noise of anxiety, of separation, bankruptcy, a family member who has died, the noise of fear of death and the future, of a diagnosis and the noise of the news. Those noises lead us to not listen to what God has told us. But, as we see from the story of Jesus calming a very big and dangerous storm that He and His disciples were facing in Mark 4:35-41, Jesus has already given you great promises and assures you that He is with you no matter what storms you personally are facing. Jesus had told the disciples they would cross over in a boat to the other side, but He hadn't told them there would be storms along the way. Yes Jesus's promises were still true, regardless of the storm facing them. We can learn, just as Jesus's first disciples had to, how to block out the noises that stop us always focussing on Jesus and living for Him and in His perfect peace. 1. Remember who Jesus is: The Son of God 2. Remember all that Jesus has done: He has healed you 3. Remember what Jesus can do: all that He promises He will do in your life Apply Jeus spoke to the storm the disciples were facing and brought a peace that totally surpassed all understanding. You can understand that in spite of the storms, Jesus is with you. Tell the Lord about the storms you are experiencing, but understand that in the midst of that storm Jesus is there. Understand that what Jesus did in the past, He will do again in this present storm. He has the power to speak to sickness and transform it into healing. He has the power to speak to the curse and transform it into blessing. Jesus has the power to speak to death and transform it into life. But you have to remember and declare that, despite the great storm you are facing, that Jesus has promised you will make it through. Believe that this storm is forming your character and taking you to a greater level of faith. Remember that you are not alone, you have the Lord, you have the church, you have the pastors, and you are going to get through to the other side. There is going to come a calm where you are going to experience miracles. Tell Jesus the storms that you are experiencing, e.g. family, personal, financial, emotional, sickness, pain, a child who has relapsed, etc. But understand that in spite of that storm, you are not alone. You have not been abandoned. Jesus the Son of God, the One who shed His blood seven times for you at the Cross of Calvary, is right there with you. From today, ask the Lord that you will no longer hear those noises, and that from today you will understand that Jesus is saying ‘I am with you and we will pass over to the other side'. Jesus has the power to calm and remove your storm and to silence all the noise. Declare that you will make it through the other side of your storm and that Jesus is with you and you will see a miracle. Thank the Lord that you will see His promises become a reality in your life.

Yes - Jesus is coming back but some things have to happen before He does and rebuilding a temple in Jerusalem is one of those things. Jesus of Nazareth had several brothers and sisters, among them were two who became well kown in the churches, James and Judas. Yes Jesus had a brother named Judas ad he had two disciple/apostles with that name also. Judas was a common and honored named among the Jews associated with the tribe of Judah from whom David came and from whom came the promised Messiah. However the betrayal of Jesus by his disciple ,Judas Iscariot, ruined the name. Thus this letter bears the name, Jude. See Scripture verses, Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.Matthew 13:55-57; Matthew 12:46, John 6:42; Galatians 1:19;Jude 1:1Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.”Disciples named Judas, John 14:22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”Mark 3:16-20 16 He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. As we read the Bible, it is very clear, Jesus is coming back. While many scoff and disbelieve, it doesn't change the truth of what Jesus has said. We don't know when He is coming, but we do know He is coming soon. Main Points:1. Knowledge of Christ's return should not produce fear or anxiety in the heart of the believer. This truth should give us hope. It should cause us to be encouraged. What God has prepared for us is greater than anything this would could give us.2. In an increasingly chaotic world, what a hopeful thought that this could be the year Jesus returns. More comforting still is the anticipation that all who trust Him for salvation will be gathered together, relieved from this world's suffering, sorrow, and fear. Best of all, we'll be with the Lord forever!3. While you and I as Christians long for the return of Jesus, there are still many who do not know Him. Peter reminds us that God isn't just being slow for no reason. He is being patient. He doesn't want anyone to perish. He desires that everyone would come to repentance and believe in Jesus.Today's Scripture Verses:Acts 1:10-11 tells the story. “They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”Revelation 22:20 - “He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”2 Peter 3:4 - “They will say, “Where is this ‘coming' he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”Matthew 24:44 - “So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”2 Peter 3:9 - "The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”Quick Links:Subscribe to The 5 Minute Discipleship NewsletterDonate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Teacher: La Shonda Coleman At times it can be challenging to love and show compassion for self in the many ways that we so readily do for others. We may have bought into the myth that self care is selfish. Yes, I named it a myth and if this is something you have bought into, extend yourself grace--while leaning into an opportunity to believe differently. An opportunity to experience love starting with Jesus and YOU. In the scriptures, Jesus models for us the practice of self-care and compassion. The truth is, Jesus loves you and gives us permission to love ourselves as well (Leviticus 19:17-18). This love can be expressed through self-care practices and through the practice of self-compassion. The question now is, how does it look to love and show compassion for ourselves? This class will prepare participants to create a self-care plan and to experience a variety of sensations that flow from self compassion. Through education, embodied practices, guided reflections, prayer, meditation and dialogue, participants in this class can expect to have a wholehearted experience!
In this episode we will look at what God say is the reason why Jesus dies. Too many people today are only hearing part of the truth. They will hear God loves you, Jesus died for your sins because we are sinners, etc... Although those statements are true, they are not the full message of truth. Yes God loves the entire world and desires that none perish, but guess what, many perish. What happened to God's love? Yes Jesus died for the sins of the whole world, but many will still be cast into hell. Yes even those who believe and confess Jesus as Lord will be cast into hell. How can this be? Because if you know the whole truth and real reason why Jesus dies it, then you would know that it is to free you from sin! To be made into a new creation, to overcome and now walk in holiness by the power of God. We will look at several different passages in the bible as we review God's true message and not the half truth or lie the devil has infiltrated most of the churches in the world today.Passages covered: 1 John ch 1, 2:1-7, 3:1-9; 1 Peter 1:1-2, 13-15, ch2, 3:8-14, ch4, 5:12; 2 Corinthians 5:10-7:10, 1:1-4, 13-15, 12:20-13:7; 1 Corinthians 15:33-34, 5:6-13, 6:7-12; Mark 7:6-23; James 1:2-7, 12, 16-27, 3:1-4:10; Romans 13:8-14; 2 Timothy 2:19-26; Isaiah ch 58, 59:1-2; John 8:30-44; Romans ch6, 7:1-6
“If You Choose, You Can Make Me Clean”Mark 1:40-42 “ A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.”I choose this verse today because I think this leper asks a question that we all ask at one point or another. When we need something from God, or when we need a healing for ourselves or for a loved one, we probably say to Jesus, if you choose to give me this, or if you choose to heal this person, you can. We know that Jesus can do anything. There isn't anything He can't do, so when we say this it is more for our benefit then for His. When we add “if you choose to” when we pray it is as if we are giving Jesus a way out. We are building in an out for Him and for us. Why I say for us is because if we don't see the desired outcome we can just decide that Jesus didn't choose to heal them this time. That is not always the case. There are things that can get in the way of a healing, things that can block a healing. Unbelief can get in the way of healing. You don't have to have belief to be healed. Jesus brought people back from the dead and how much belief can you have when you are dead? This is proof you can be headed even if you don't have faith and yet unbelief can be a block at other times. For instance, Jesus could not heal in Nazareth because that was his hometown. That is where he grew up. It says in Matthew 13:58, “ And he did not do many deeds of power there, because of their unbelief.” The people that knew him as a child could not believe that he could be anything more than a carpenter's son, so he was unable to do signs and wonders there. Another thing that can be a block to healing can be unforgiveness. This can be a big block at times. Jesus wants to heal us, he wants us all to be free from our pain and suffering. And also, Jesus wants us to forgive. He taught us, right in the Our Father prayer, that we will be forgiven to the extent we forgive others. If we can't forgive others God won't forgive us. I know I have mentioned this before and I will keep mentioning it because this is huge. I know that some of you listening are dealing with some pretty big betrayals. I know some of you listening have had people hurt you in unimaginable ways. I know that the last thing you probably want to do is to forgive that person, or those people. And yet, that is exactly what God is asking you to do. One thing I have learned and I want to pass on to you in case you were never told this, is that forgiveness is an act of will, it is a choice. It is not a feeling. You can forgive someone even if you don't feel like it. You can forgive someone even when you don't really want to. The only thing that is required for you to forgive someone is taking that brave first step to say the words, “I forgive _______ for _______.” It's even better if you can do it in the name of Jesus. For instance, “ In the name of Jesus I forgive _________ for ____________.” It is totally ok if you say this and yet you don't really feel it yet, even if you aren't sure if you believe it yet. You are letting God know you are open to trying to forgive this person and you are inviting God in to do all the heavy lifting.Forgiveness is hard and we can't do it on our own. Only God can go in and heal our wounds and help us to forgive. However, God is a perfect gentleman and He will not come in where He has not been invited. He values our free will so much that He will sit by and watch, no matter how much it hurts him to see us like that, He will let us hold onto our anger and hurt if we choose too. However, He doesn't like to see it and He is always right there waiting to take our pain and sorrow from us, we just have to ask Him. We just have to let Him know we want His help and invite Him into our mess so He can start to clean it up again. God is asking us to forgive for two reasons. First, he wants to free us from the pain and suffering we are going through. I want to briefly touch on what forgiveness is and is not because I am not sure we all understand forgiveness completely. Forgiveness is not telling someone that what they did is ok. Forgiveness is not necessarily reconnecting with that person and letting them back into your life. Forgiveness is not saying they didn't hurt you. Forgiveness is simply saying this thing happened, I can't change the fact that it happened and yet I am not going to keep thinking about it. I am not going to keep replaying what happened over and over again in my head. I am letting it go. I am going to stop letting this terrible thing have a hold over me any more. I am breaking any hold it has over me. You are not saying what happened is ok, because it wasn't. You can forgive someone and yet, never want to be around them again. That is totally find. Forgiveness and reconciliation are two different things. When we refuse to forgive we are holding on to all that pain, anger, resentment, sadness and many other emotions and it slowly eats away at us from the inside. However, it is not hurting the other person. They are likely not holding on to any emotions from the incident and are merrily going throughout their day. I have heard that when we refuse to forgive it is as if we are drinking a little poison every single day and expecting the other person to die. It just doesn't happen like that as you are the one taking the poison. The thing that happened was traumatic enough, why let that unforgiveness eat you up inside too? God does not want that for you. That is the first reason He wants us to forgive, to free us from that. The second reason is because the other person who did that to you is God's child too. I know you probably could care less about the other person and God gets that. He knows what you went through and He is not asking you to care about the other person. He is asking you to forgive that person though. You never know what your forgiveness could do for that person. I remember the story of Saint Maria Goretti. She was a young woman, a girl really, and she loved the Lord so much. One day a friend of hers, an older boy who lived where she lived, tried to rape her. She refused and kept telling the boy that this was not what God wanted. He had a knife and was so angry that he stabbed her several times. She was rushed to the hospital where she died, I am not sure how long she stayed a live for but I know she forgave her attacker before she died. This boy was so moved by her ability to forgive him that while he was in jail he decided to become a priest. His whole life was changed by this one girl's ability to forgive. Forgiveness is powerful. If you are not sure if you are holding onto any unresolved unforgiveness then ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind anyone you might have unforgiveness towards. Another thing I have learned about forgiveness is that unfortunately it is not a one and done. You may have forgiven someone, you may have turned it over to the Lord and then one day you may feel that unforgiveness, that anger, sadness, or whatever it is again. This is normal. I am letting you know this so you don't get discouraged with yourself. Sometimes it can be frustrating and we can think, “Really, I thought I dealt with this already?” It's ok, just turn it back over to God and forgive the person again if you need to. It will get easier each time you do it. When you are first trying to forgive someone you may need to say it 100 time, 1000 times, who knows, it depends how deep the wound is. However many times you have to say it, just know that God is proud of you each time you are able to say it. He is smiling down on you and then going to work on your heart, on the wounds caused by that person, by that situation. God is releasing you a little more each time. He loves you and wants you to be free. Back to the verse above, Yes Jesus chooses to heal you!!Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless each person listening today. We thank you for wanting to heal us. We thank you for encouraging us to forgive and for being patient with us while we figure out how to forgive our own time line. We know it can't be easy for you to watch us holding on to all of that. Lord, we thank you for doing all the heavy lifting, for doing the hard part. We know all we have to do is say that we forgive the person and then you come in and do the actual forgiving. You heal the wounds, you heal the scars, you make it possible for us to forgive. Thank you Lord. You are truly amazing. We love you and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Addiction has become sorta an expectation in our society. Most of us have dealt with addiction on one level or another. Many are secretly hiding their addictions, out of fear of judgement and shame. On today's show I sit down with my guest, who was on staff at a church and hiding his addiction to alcohol. While he was a Christian for most of his life, it wasn't until his addiction got out of control that he fully understand and experienced the grace of God. The churches obsession with preaching against sin, has lead many in the church to hide in shame and not feel safe or comfortable to come clean and ask for help. Jesus' ministry on earth expanded as He appointed 72 followers to prepare the path ahead of Him. As we examine Jesus' instructions to the 72, let's prayerfully seek His lessons for us today. (Luke 10:1-16) **** Welcome to Walking in the Word, the biblical teaching arm of the Women World Leaders podcast. My name is Julie Jenkins, and I'm honored that you have chosen to listen today and pray that as we open God's Word together, He will infuse you with insight and joy. If you are new to Women World Leaders, I invite you to check out our website, www.womenworldleaders.com. We are a ministry on mission to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ and empower you to walk in your God-given purpose. Everything we do is geared toward those two aims. When visionary and founder Kimberly Hobbs started this ministry in her living room four years ago, she never dreamed that we would be podcasting three times a week, creating a quarterly magazine, or publishing books to showcase God's glory. She DID, however, foresee us reaching the world – and today, we reach over 60 countries. If you would like to jump in deeper, we'd love to help you grow and serve in your specific gifting. A great place to start is to attend our monthly Zoom leadership meeting on the third Monday of the month at 7pm ET. Our next meeting is on October 17th. You can receive the link by signing up at womenworldleaders.com. And just a reminder – the deadline to subscribe to Voice of Truth magazine before the next edition comes out is quickly approaching. Voice of Truth is still free digitally, but to receive the magazine physically in your mailbox, we are asking that you become a regular monthly donor. Your regular monthly donation of any amount will allow us to budget for the ministry AND pay for or offset the cost of producing and publishing Voice of Truth. So don't forget to go to our website, click on the donate tab, and register to give a recurring monthly tax-deductible gift. We so appreciate you and the way you are all pitching in. Your gifts enable us to continue providing quality content to help you grow in your God-given purpose! Let's get to today's teaching! If you are familiar with this, the Wednesday edition of our podcast, you likely know we are currently walking through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – looking at the life of Jesus chronologically as the Holy Spirit guides us. Today's reading takes us to the book of Luke, chapter 10, verses 1-16. Before we begin, let's pray… Dear Most Holy God – we give you this day and we give you these next few minutes. Father, we ask you to guide us through this teaching that Luke wrote so many years ago. God, we thank you for the education and the divine wisdom you infused into Luke, allowing him to write the words we will study today. We thank you for preserving your Word for us. And we thank you for the translators you spoke to as they carefully put these words into the English language. God, you have already ordained, overseen, and coordinated so much just so we can open our Bibles today and hear from you, and we don't want to ever take any of that for granted. The least we can do, God, is give you our undivided attention as we study this glorious gift you have provided us. So it is with great expectation and joy that we open your Word, and it is with great confidence and faith that we ask you to speak directly to us. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen. Today we move from Jesus' teaching in Jerusalem to the preparation for His return to His teaching tour, so-to-speak. Yes…Jesus went on a teaching tour. Although God calls us to come to Him, He will go to great lengths to meet US where WE are. I've heard it said that if there are 100 steps between you and God, you can count on Him to take 99, but you have to take at least one. So Jesus was preparing to take the 99 steps toward those who did not come to Jerusalem for the Festival of Tabernacles. But since, as He was fully human, He could only be in one place at one time, He sent a group of His followers before Him to prepare the hearts of those He would meet. Let's begin in Luke 10:1 from the New Living Translation… 10 The Lord now chose seventy-two[a] other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit. 2 These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. 3 Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. 4 Don't take any money with you, nor a traveler's bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don't stop to greet anyone on the road. Do you see that Jesus is empowering His disciples to walk in their God-given purpose?? I just noted that Jesus was fully human and could only be in one place at one time, and that's correct. But Jesus was also fully God – and God can do whatever He wants to do! But God CHOSE to use humans – sinful, messed up, unqualified humans – to prepare the way for Jesus to enter the hearts of others. I don't know about you – but that makes me feel pretty good! In fact, it kind of makes me awe-struck. It can be easy to think, in our Christian walk, that we are not good enough or qualified enough to serve our almighty God, let alone serve other people! I felt called to be a leader for Christ from the time I was very young. But I grew up the youngest of seven children. And as the youngest of seven children, it can be hard to seen or recognized. My place became hanging out in the background, allowing everyone else to have center stage, because, in my heart of hearts, I felt like I was not as important as everyone else around me. I still carry some of that, but through the years, God has empowered me by assuring me of my importance in His sight, and by reminding me that He created ME on purpose, for a purpose. Dear Friend! You were created ON PURPOSE for a purpose! And we ALL, as believers in Jesus Christ, have the purpose of sharing the glorious news of Jesus Christ with others! Just yesterday, I was in a meeting with some leaders in our ministry, and one of our leaders said, “I used to be the person that was being led and poured into, and now I find that I am the one leading and pouring into others.” THAT is what the Christian community is about! It is about rising to our God-given purpose, and then empowering others to rise to theirs. That is what Jesus was doing – He was elevating those 72 individuals He called to go before Him to share His name. And just listen to the instructions He gave them… First, Jesus told them where to go and that they wouldn't be alone. Oh, I don't mean that God was with them. Of course, He WAS, but Jesus also partnered them up and sent them out two by two! Isn't that just like God to give us people we can do ministry together with?? If you don't have someone to work with in ministry in this season of your life, will you ask God to send you someone? And then, will you partner up? That can be the hard part!! Because we are selfish, willful human beings, and sometimes, we would rather work by ourselves. But trust me, we all need someone to hold us up and hold us accountable to all that God has called us to. So first…Jesus told them where to go and who to go with. The second instruction was to PRAY for others to join in the work! In ministry, the work sometimes seems to multiply as God brings more and more to do! But God never intended for ANY of us to do it all and certainly not for us to do it alone! His plan is for us to work together. That might mean that YOU, like the leader I mentioned above, will be tasked with leading and encouraging others! Now, that's exciting!! Next, Jesus instructed them to expect issues…saying… remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. When we go for God, we should EXPECT opposition. Remember, Satan rules this world, so we are in enemy territory. BUT, God promised HIS provision, saying… Don't take any money with you, nor a traveler's bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don't stop to greet anyone on the road. In other words, they were to walk in obedience, fully trusting God's path. And Jesus told them not to greet anyone on the way because their destination was to be their focus. It can be easy, when God calls us on a mission, to get sidetracked. Let's read further and see what Jesus' next instructions to the 72 were…verse 5… 5 “Whenever you enter someone's home, first say, ‘May God's peace be on this house.' 6 If those who live there are peaceful, the blessing will stand; if they are not, the blessing will return to you. 7 Don't move around from home to home. Stay in one place, eating and drinking what they provide. Don't hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve their pay. It is always our responsibility, as Christians, to declare God's peace over an environment or situation. And we can be assured that if hearts are open to Jesus, the peace will remain and grow. And if the hearts are NOT receptive, the blessing of peace we declare on others will return to us. Isn't that a freeing thought? We don't have to force peace on a situation. Ever. We offer it, and if we are turned away, we keep the peace in our own hearts, despite what is going on around us or elsewhere. Jesus also told the 72 to be patient and stay in one place. They were to not cause confusion in the community but remain where God sends them, accepting His provision. This is a word for us, of course. We can always trust God's leading. Verse 8 continues… 8 “If you enter a town and it welcomes you, eat whatever is set before you. 9 Heal the sick, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you now.' The 72 were given God's power to heal for the same reason Jesus healed – to showcase God's glory and turn people toward Jesus. Verse 10… 10 But if a town refuses to welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘We wipe even the dust of your town from our feet to show that we have abandoned you to your fate. And know this—the Kingdom of God is near!' God stands with open arms – welcoming all to become His children. And He sends those children to proclaim to others that they, too, are being called into the Father's arms. What a GREAT purpose we all have!! But not all will listen to God or to us. In fact, MOST will not listen, but it is still our duty to speak! To share what we know. But when we are not welcome, God gives us the permission to walk away…to shake the dust from our feet. Some people are surrounded by such a thick wall of unbelief and distrust – it's as if layers have grown up around them. Imagine, if you will, that each Christian who approaches an unbeliever has the power to remove someone's outer layer of unbelief. If we obediently remove just that top layer in 10,000 people in our lifetime, that's 10,000 layers! If we all walk in obedience, God will use us ALL to strip off those layers, and together and with the power of the Holy Spirit, we can wear out the devil and destroy his purposes. And yet…here's the warning…some will consistently refuse to see the power of Jesus and accept His life-giving salvation. To that, Jesus says, beginning in verse 12… 12 I assure you, even wicked Sodom will be better off than such a town on judgment day. 13 “What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse. 14 Yes, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you. 15 And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead.[b]” 16 Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.” God is rejected by many. Jesus is rejected by many. So we shouldn't beat ourselves up when we are rejected just because we bring the message of joy and peace on behalf of Jesus Christ. I don't know where God is calling you to walk. I don't know what enemy territory He is leading you into, but I want to encourage you to stand strong for Him. Partner up with someone – we'd love to partner with you at Women World Leaders. Pray that as the work increases, God will send more people to work with you on His behalf. Walk purposefully and with urgency to your destination, expecting opposition. Be the first to reach out with the peace of God and remain where God has placed you until He calls you elsewhere. If His peace is not received, don't take it personally, but move on, trusting you have made a difference even if you can't see it. And finally, showcase God's glory with whatever gifting God has given you. Next week, we get to see the return of the 72, and I think you will be amazed. But this week, will you commit to being God's servant? Will you go where He leads you today? I can assure you if you do, you will have a story to tell as we check back in on the 72 next week! Let's pray… Dear Most Holy God! Yes…we will go for you!! We will walk obediently and with urgency where you lead us. We will offer others YOUR peace by your power alone. We just need you to show us where to go and how long to remain, and we trust that your power will rain down on us. We give you this week, dear God, and we trust you to go with us always. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
Yes Jesus loves me, the Bible tells me so!
From Sunday 15 May 2022, Ben Simmons, Minister to Youth and Activites has a message from chapter 5 of 2 Corinthians. fbcmw.orgOriginally recorded on 05/15/22 at First Baptist Church in Mount Washington, KY.
As soon as we say YES to Jesus, he is inviting us to join His mission. Jesus promises us that if we follow him, he will qualify us to do what he is asking us to do. He is not looking for the most talented or gifted, he is looking for an obedient heart, that say, “Yes Jesus, use me”!
Our failures are never beyond the restoring grace of Jesus. Your sins and failures, my sins and failures are never beyond the restoring grace of Jesus. It doesn't matter how big your sin is, how big your failure is, how big of a mess you've made out of your life, you can always start over! You can always have a fresh start, because there's always a Ch. 21 with Jesus! There's always a chapter of restoration with Jesus!Do you want to be restored? Do you want to be restored from sin, restored from failure, restored in your relationship with Jesus? The same question Jesus asked Peter is the same question I'll ask you: Do you love Jesus? Do you love Jesus? Your restoration will begin if you answer “Yes Jesus, I do love you,” and your restoration will continue growing into an abundantly joyful life the more you follow Jesus' voice. Peter states in 1 Peter 5:10, “The God of all grace...will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you...” Say yes to Jesus, let the restoration begin, and never forget there's always a Ch. 21 with Jesus.
