Episode 399 takes you back to a simpler time- 1971. This is when the psychotic behavior of other drivers couldn't be explained as easily and wasn't such a frequent occurrence. A budding young director knew just how to turn road rage and menacing behavior into true terror on the small screen for an ABC Movie of the Week. Steven Spielberg's “Duel” finds traveling salesman David Mann (Dennis Weaver) chased by a mysterious trucker with a tanker full of something flammable and the desire to terrorize. Brian's Song is a 1971 ABC Movie of the Week that recounts the details of the life of Brian Piccolo (played by James Caan), a Chicago Bears football player stricken with terminal cancer after turning pro in 1965, told through his friendship with Bears teammate Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams). Piccolo's and Sayers' sharply differing temperaments and racial backgrounds made them unlikely to become as close friends as they did, including becoming the first interracial roommates in the history of the National Football League, and the film chronicles the evolution of their friendship, ending with Piccolo's death in 1970.[2] The production was such a success on ABC that it was later shown in theaters by Columbia Pictures,[3] with a major premiere in Chicago; however, it was soon withdrawn for lack of business.[1] Critics have called the movie one of the finest telefilms ever made.[1][4] A 2005 readers poll taken by Entertainment Weekly ranked Brian's Song seventh in its list of the top "guy-cry" films ever made. The movie is based on Sayers's account of his friendship with Piccolo and coping with Piccolo's illness in Sayers's 1970 autobiography, I Am Third.[5] The film was written by veteran screenwriter William Blinn,[6] whose script one Dallas television critic called "highly restrained, steering clear of any overt sentimentality [yet conveying] the genuine affection the two men felt so deeply for each other."[4] Although based on a true story, the film does include some fictional scenes. For example, the head coach, George Halas (played by Jack Warden), tells Sayers that he wants to bench Piccolo when he suspects that there may be a problem affecting his performance. He later learns of Brian's cancer. In reality, Jim Dooley was the head coach at that time, as Halas had retired from the position following the 1967 season.
Barbara Eden stars in this 1974 ABC Movie of the Week, which puts a sci-fi twist on the “Help! There's something in my womb!”-subgenre of horror flick made in the style of Rosemary's Baby. To clump discuss this schlocky goodness, Sam is joined by founding SNL cast member Laraine Newman, who is a delight. The ABC Movie of the Week for the week of October 30, 1974, DEATH CRUISE delivers exactly what that title promises: death, several times over, happening specifically on a cruise ship. The film stars patron saint of this podcast, Kate Jackson, alongside Richard Long, Tom Bosley and Polly Bergen, and on hand to discuss it is actress Natalie Lander — a delight in her own right but also the granddaughter of one of the actors playing these unlucky cruisegoers. TVC 553.3: Part 2 of a conversation that began on our last program with Susan Silver, one of the original writers for The Mary Tyler Moore Show and one of the very first female writers to break the glass ceiling in the world of TV comedy. Topics this segment include The Girl Who Came Gift-Wrapped, the romantic comedy starring Karen Valentine, Richard Long, and Louise Sorel that Susan wrote for the ABC Movie of the Week in 1973. While very much a product of its time, Girl still holds up today because of the strong characters that Susan created. Susan's memoir, Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets and Sitcoms, is available as a print edition through Amazon.com and as an audiobook through Audible.com. Susan's radio commentary, Susan Says with Susan Silver, is heard on RobinHoodRadio.com and on Apple Podcasts. Want to advertise/sponsor our show? TVC 528.4: Greg and Ed celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of The Point, the first feature-length animated movie made for television, which premiered on the ABC Movie of the Week in February 1971. Written by Harry Nilsson, and featuring the voice of Mike Lookinland (The Brady Bunch) and original songs by Nilsson, The Point remains an iconic film, despite a somewhat convoluted broadcast and distribution history that includes five different narrators for its various releases. The Point is now available on Blu-ray through MVD Visual. Want to advertise/sponsor our show? Nos adentramos en profundidad en el formato del cine hecho para televisión hablando por un lado de uno de los programas de mayor éxito dedicado a este tipo de producciones, The ABC Movie of the Week.

Explore the rise and fall of 'The ABC Movie of the Week," which gave us some amazing films and spawned a number of popular TV series.
Lee and Daniel end off their little series on film recommendations from listener Jeff Williams. This time it's the weird ABC Movie of the week from 1978, "The Bermuda Depths". Is this mash-up of fantasy & horror; featuring a beautiful undead maiden, a giant sea turtle, and a half-naked Carl Weathers sporting a bazooka harpoon any good? It's a Rankin & Bass co-production with Tsuburaya Productions, so it's at least worth a look, right? RIGHT? How would Jess Franco have done this film? Listener comments and what the hosts have watched lately is also brought up. "The Bermuda" Depths IMDB Featured Music: "Turtles" by Henry Mancini & "Jennie's Song" by Maury Laws, Jules Bass, and sung by Claude Carmichael.
EPISODE 99: Robert Forster and Melvyn Douglas star in the ABC Movie of the Week, THE DEATH SQUAD (1974), a story about cops who take the law into their own hands and the one standout who goes up against them. We take a moment to give thanks and to remember Forster, whom we lost this season. Thanks to all who listen to this show. LISTEN IN....
