Originally from Margate, Molloy founded the club to confront the isolation and structural barriers often experienced by those from lower-income communities within the arts industry. The club fosters a strong sense of community through networking events, workshops, and panel discussions featuring influential working-class voices in the creative sector.Since its inception, it has grown rapidly, with nearly 1,000 members—approximately 75% of whom identify as women. More than just a professional resource, the Working Arts Club provides a space for solidarity and honest conversation about class-based challenges in the arts.Looking ahead from its first anniversary, Molloy hopes to broaden the club's reach into schools and universities, encouraging young people from similar backgrounds to pursue and thrive in creative careers. This week, we're sharing an episode from our friends at FCAT After School. FCAT After School is a podcast project led by student hosts from across SFU's Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology speaking with alumni about their career journey since graduation. You'll hear stories of and advice for traditional and unconventional career paths across communication, interactive arts and technology, contemporary arts, publishing and digital media. What does it mean to fail and succeed at the same time? How can one offer joy as a form of activism? What is the purpose of comedy in 2024? In this episode, host Torien Cafferata explores these questions with SFU School for the Contemporary Arts alum June Fukumura, an interdisciplinary theatre artist, clown, and comedian. June has appeared on the Arts Club stage, in film and TV, and an award-winning Fringe Festival solo show. Together she and Torien explore how, in June's line of work, failure is very much a form of success — and re-enchanting the everyday can happen both on and off the stage. My practice moves and connects me to live performance, video documentation, curation, festival programming, editing, filmmaking, and directing. I am a grateful guest of what is colonially know as Vancouver on the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish),and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. I hold an MA in Screendance from the London Contemporary Dance School, and am the founding Artistic Director of F-O-R-M (Festival Of Recorded Movement). Through completing my MA, I became interested in making work that challenges and slows our attention. I use film and dance to invite connection and empathy towards the bodies we witness on screen, as well as invite sensation within the bodies of those witnessing. I work independently and collaboratively with artists and communities to engage audiences in work that moves them through embodied and imaginative experiences. I am also involved with videocan as a video archivist and on the research team which is an online archive of Canadian performance directed by Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim. I have also curated screenings for New Blue Dance Festival (Toronto), Vancouver Art Gallery, DOTE (Vancouver) and Body+Camera (Chicago).   About Tara:   Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg, is an award winning creator, performer, choreographer, director, writer, and artistic director of Tara Cheyenne Performance, working across disciplines in film, dance, theatre, and experimental performance. Today I'm chatting to the swashbuckling artist and restaurateur Jonny Gent. We recorded this episode during a busy lunch service at Sessions Arts Club, Jonny's inspirational restaurant in Clerkenwell. It's fair to say that he'd emboldened himself with a few martinis beforehand and what ensued was a conversation that very much represents the man himself: unstructured, poetic and generous. Jonny's a brilliant painter, and his artworks range from the sexualised and salacious to tenderly painted still-lifes that are a tribute to his late mother. After getting himself through art school, he met a casting director who wrote him a cheque for every painting he'd made. What followed was a journey that took him to more than 20 countries around the world, establishing art studios in everything from a cabin in Scotland to a tobacco factory in France. Now approaching his late 40s, he's finally starting to put down some roots. As well as having a permanent home in London, Jonny spends a lot of time in the Scottish Highlands, where he's opened a retreat for creatives called Boath House. Like Sessions Arts Club, it explores the confluence of art, food and music. Jonny says of his childhood, “I felt totally alone in what I found beautiful.” He begins by telling me about the Slow & Easy, the pub he grew up in, and the lasting impact of 500 strangers coming into your home every day. I hope you enjoy it!This episode was recorded in person at Sessions Arts Club, London. For more: Visit The Modern House website to see images of the spaces discussed in this episodeCheck out Sessions Arts Club and Boath HouseTake a look at Jonny Gent's latest workProduction and editing: Hannah PhillipsEditing and mixing: Oscar CrawfordGraphic Design: Tom YoungMusic: Father Hosted on Acast. She started dancing at age 5 and got super serious about it at age 10. When she was 13, she left home to attend Quinte Ballet School of Canada in Belleville, Ontario, where she undertook her professional training for the next five years. Now an independent contemporary dance artist, she has spent the past 20 or so years in Toronto/Tkaronto and so-called Vancouver (on the unceded Indigenous territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations) wearing almost every "hat" a person can wear in the community, (performer, choreographer, administrator, volunteer, producer, presenter, educator, outside eye, probably a couple other things). She works regularly for local artists Company 605, Justine A. Chambers and Tara Cheyenne Performance, amongst others, as well as being in her eighth season as Associate Artistic Director of four-year post-secondary contemporary dance program Modus Operandi, where she has the responsibility and privilege of teaching a small, dedicated, passionate group of younger dance artists.  Kate has taught Yoga and Pilates mat work in the past. She has been a member of Madlab School of Fitness for the past six years.    About Caron:   As an athlete Caron was dissatisfied with the current state of women's health and representation in the fitness industry.  Many training programs treat male and female athletes the same despite the big underlying difference - hormones.  Taking matters into her own hands, Caron has dedicated herself to learning all she can about women's health and fitness so she can support women at all stages of life - teens, menstruating, peri and postmenopausal and pregnant and postpartum - all which require different nutritional support and training stimulus.  Caron is an associate coach at Madlab School of Fitness in Vancouver. Are you an acting educator who wants to update your teaching skills and knowledge?  In this week's episode, Actor/Painter/Teacher/Activist, Jennifer Wigmore would take us on a journey on how AACE was established to create a community amongst acting coaches and educators in Canada. In this episode: How an unfortunate casting experience evolved into Jennifer's green light to quit acting. How pursuing another artistic passion lead Jen to discover all creative endeavours are drawn from the same well. She is also a member of the Arts Club of Washington and the California Arts Club. "Since returning to the Washington D.C. area I have been focusing on creating a new and large body of work. My new series have taken me away from academic studies to more elaborate compositions which combine human and still life elements. In addition to this I now take on portrait commissions, and continue my studies in art by observing and copying the painting of the Old Masters in art galleries throughout the world. My work is about pleasing the eye. I paint light and the way it falls. Simple observation reveals beauty; often it is found in the unconventional. Because of this I have learned to take particular delight in unusual pairings of subject matter. Frequently my compositions are spontaneous. When a person comes to me, they occupy a space my mind. Arrangements form from there until with excitement I see and have the idea. The design is both planned and subconscious. For this reason I surround myself with Victorian and Baroque costume, bones, and other things which I find fascinating- I want subject matter to always be at hand. My paintings are created with oil paint on canvas. I am conscious of the traditional craftsmanship I have attained in Florence. While my interest in new pigments and tools may cause minor alterations in my materials, these really remain fundamentally the same. All my evolution is taking place on the canvas and in my head; in what I see in nature and interpret in two dimensions on the picture plan. I have the fundamentals of design to work with when planning a painting. I make preparatory studies. I use multiple layers to build an illusion of light and form. When this illusion is convincing and to my taste, the painting is done." -Teresa
