Our series on 'movies about presidents' continues with a fun discussion of this 1997 'thriller', written by legendary Hollywood screenwriter William Goldman based on the debut novel of David Baldacci, starring/produced/directed by noted chair-interviewer Clint Eastwood, and boasting a splendid cast - including recently-deceased screen legend Gene Hackman - none of whom are given anything very interesting to do. Clint plays a suave cat burglar - with the unlikely name of Luther Whitney - who accidentally witnesses the president of the United States sexually assaulting a woman (far-fetched, right?) and getting her killed. All Hell then persistently threatens but repeatedly fails to break loose. Instead we get a slow, aimless, half-baked movie filled with good elements that don't cohere or go anywhere special. It sparked an amusing conversation though, as we hope you will agree. Full episode exclusive for Patreon subscribers. Please consider donating to help us make the show and stay independent. It's a wrap! Well, on this album anyway. Kev finds a Kiss song that he really rather likes and the boys discuss the relative merits of the Gene "trilogy" of songs that closes out this album. What will Kev be licking? Will Corey rate side B higher than Side A and will Vinnie Vincent actually play something worth listening to? The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and tell it to the people right now!Songs covered in this episode: "All Hell's Breakin' Loose", "A Million to One", "Fits Like a Glove", "Dance All Over Your Face", "And on the 8th Day"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/76F8G8FEX8Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we get to meet Gareth Paisey, the lead singer of indie rockers Los Campesinos! In this chat, Gareth and I discuss the band's newest record All Hell, which came out this past summer on the band's own label. We talk about the interim between it and its predecessor Sick Scenes, the production and background of this new one, as well as his own love-hate relationship with songwriting. We talk about the band's growth and legacy, as well as what Gareth's favorite parts of being in a band like Los Campesinos are. All Hell is probably their strongest record yet, and one of 2024's best, so if you haven't caught up with it, go take a listen, and then come hang out with us. Thank you for listening.

What happens when you are a cult band (indeed when Pitchfork refers to you as “the ultimate cult band”) and you make the most accessible, most ‘mainstream' album of your career? It's a relevant question for many bands these days, because emerging from cult status to the mainstream (what's left of it) is a very valid path to longevity and success. Look at Nick Cave for example. He's done alright. But I can't think of a better example right now, than Los Campesinos! With All Hell, they have made the kind of record that can win over new fans, which isn't easy on your 7th album. If we whisper it quietly, they may have even made a classic album. Only time will tell, but for now the band is enjoying basking in a little bit of well deserved success, including an 8.5 on Pitchfork, hitting number 14 on the UK album chart and sold out UK venues - bigger ones than they have played before. Not quite a jump from cult status to daytime radio playlists, but nonetheless, progress. Los Campesinos! have just found a route to a larger audience. “We've always looked for validation elsewhere, but to achieve the best reviews of our career and chart position [for All Hell] is very flattering and something we appreciate more now than at any other point in our career.”It remains to be seen if the glut of year end ‘best albums of' lists remember to include All Hell, if indeed they considered the record a suitable candidate. Well, it's on my list. What's more, the vinyl package is lovely (apart from the 45 RPM but we'll let that one go for now). Nothing better though, than a band in the enlightenment phase:“When we formed we were very much ‘indier than thou. Very pretentious. We were very prescriptive to what being in a band should be. Authenticity has always been very important to us but now, our approach to releasing music, playing live shows - we've become the band we always should have been. So now I can be smug!” Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Not many bands in the metal scene - or any other for that matter - can lay claims to being true flag bearers and essential ingredients in shaping the history of music. Sure, many can try, and just as many come off as ill-informed, but the ones that are, know, and those same ones don't ever brag about it.Unless they're asked, of course.Rising from the infamously riotous city of Newcastle, England, in 1974, Raven predated even the massive New Wave Of British Heavy Metal period that spawned some of the legends of heavy metal. The trio went on to release three of the most influential metal albums of the NWOBHM, inspiring every band of that era and beyond. Basically, without RAVEN you just would not have thrash/speed metal…. after all, the band did give Metallica and Anthrax their first tours! And, as all good things do, Raven are the gift that keeps on giving, still powerful and influential half a century after their birth. Still consistently releasing new albums, Raven are also still a formidable force on the live circuit, attacking their craft with the same energy and take-no-prisoners attitude that saw them quickly touted as one of the best bands to grace a live stage.Period.After a five-year absence, Raven return to Australia in early November for a select number of shows, with frontman and bass player John Gallagher forcing HEAVY to arise at the crack of dawn just to have the pleasure of 20 odd minutes of his company. Was it worth it? Fuck my oath it was… One of the topics of discussion was the popular affirmation that Raven, to this day, are still one of the best live bands in the world. A statement we challenge will be hard to live up to."Not really," he responded confidently. "It's what we do. Go watch some videos. We'll put bands who are teenagers, 20-year-olds, we'll put them to shame because we go out to kill 100% every night. It sounds like bluster or BS, but it's not. It really isn't. Come to the show and that's what we do. We have a hell of a good time, and we get everyone in on the act. We grew up in a time where the bands we saw were performers. And entertainers. And they reached out, and they grabbed. The first band we ever saw was Slade and the opening band was The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Imagine being a 14-year-old kid seeing The Sensational Alex Harvey Band? That changed our lives. Because there you've got a guy who literally reached across everyone's face and freaked them out. Initially, it was 'Who's this band? I don't care, I wanna see Slade. Who are these guys?' And by the end everyone in the place was screaming for them. They were amazing. That's the kind of thing that went in our head. That's how you do it."In the full interview, John discussed Raven's recent activities and their upcoming tour in Australia. John mentioned that the band has been touring since the release of their new album, All Hell's Breaking Loose, and that they are celebrating their 50th anniversary. We talked about the challenges and fun aspects of playing in a band. He also talked about the musical climate in the 1970s, which inspired him and his brother Mark to form Raven, citing their influences such as Slade, Sweet, Gary Glitter, Status Quo, T-Rex, Deep Purple, and Montrose. John emphasized the importance of learning from other bands and adapting to audience reactions. We discussed their experiences with the early 1980s NWOBHM scene. John shared his involvement in the Newcastle music scene, describing the competitive yet supportive atmosphere among bands. He recounted the band's rapid rise to fame, from playing pubs to opening for Iron Maiden within three months. John also shared instances of competition and sabotage among bands but emphasized the overall camaraderie and respect among musicians.HEAVY highlighted Raven's influence on thrash metal and their contributions to the music industry. John shared that they were one of the first bands to rev up the genre, and their energy and cutting of "fat" riffs were groundbreaking. He also mentioned their influence on German bands and how they inspired many musicians. He emphasized the importance of creativity and the joy of creating new music, even after 50 years as a band. He also mentioned the band's resilience in the face of changing music trends and personal challenges, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Ladies, you've got it all figured out. All Hell could be breaking loose, but so long as you're armed with that imperative satchel that keeps your vitals accessible, you'll always be ready for the world. This is your most necessary accessory, accentuating the confidence that proves you're an irreplaceable bad ass. And one purse is not enough. Only one cannot ensure your command of any room's attention. Because with reasons and seasons in constant flux, your ability to adjust to any given outing is critical for your interchangeable persona that presents your unavoidable qualities to the scrutinizing public. In your woman cave, there hangs the quiver of handbags that typify extensions of your character--different exciting versions of you that either offer cohesion or contrast with the varying surroundings. Sometimes you will blend, other times create distinction to an otherwise bland landscape. Either way, these carryalls help you to turn super into superlative. And when it's time to turn things up, like the stitching in and of itself, your look is seamless. It is usually with great intention that this wing-thing is chosen, as if each was specially designed for your evolving moods. It exemplifies your womanly power, completing the statement that you're always intending to make. It is the cherry that perfects the sundae. The rabbit in the moon. Mona Lisa's smirk. Like her, you hold your mysteries close. And should anyone attempt to ambush you into divulging the wonderous secrets that are yours alone, the lips will slightly pucker while the stunned onlooker futilely wonders how to tap the hidden spring that spouts your charm. What lies inside this clutch is part of that mystery--the perfect shade of lipstick, the dramatic mascara, a feminine product. But almost more importantly, the cartridge of vaporizable oil which lights the wick to the roman candle that explodes into the eager night, sprinkling your unique stardust into the otherwise flat black sky.
This week Tom & Zeus review the 1983 pivotal album, "Lick It Up" This was KISS' 11th studio album and the 23rd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Lick It Up was the first studio album from KISS without the makeup. Before the release, the band was on MTV and unmasked with MTV VJ the late great J.J. Jackson and premiered the video for Lick It Up. This was the first (and last) credited album with Vinnie Vincent as a member. First not to have Ace Frehley credited as a member. First KISS album without any outside songwriters credited on an album. The album was produced by Michael James Jackson, who had just produced the previous album, Creatures Of The Night and the four original tracks on the compilation Killers. This was a critical point in KISStory. The band taking off the makeup was a big gamble. However, Paul kept thinking the audience was listening to KISS with their eyes and they needed to make this change. Now without the makeup, KISS was competing with their contemporaries on a even playing field. How did they do? Well, the album brought them back to not just gold status, but platinum. The addition of Vinnie Vincent was a difference maker. His guitar playing was great, but the energy he brought with his songwriting was just so evident. He co-wrote 8 of the 10 songs on the album, including the legendary title track, Lick It Up. The guys discuss the album cover, the videos and make a few bold statements about the album and the band with Vinnie Vincent. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. So tune in to find out if All Hell's Breakin' Loose after this album gets discussed and ranked and if the partnership of Frehley & Cusano have to file Chapter 11... John GallagherWith the release of their 15th studio album, “All Hell's Breaking Loose,” New Wave of British Heavy Metal legends Raven are back to bang some heads. Bassist/vocalist John Gallagher returns to the Talk Louder Podcast to discuss the new album, the pitfalls of major labels, his preference for a headset microphone and an early tour with opening act, Anthrax. Bonus: He also reveals his favorite Blue Oyster Cult album! Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
VOIVOD drummer Michel "Away" Langevin and RAVEN frontman John Gallagher join us on this week's Loaded Radio Podcast. This week's edition of THE LOADED RADIO PODCAST features two veterans within the genre of heavy metal. Michel "Away" Langevin from Canadian experimental thrashers VOIVOD as well as frontman John Gallagher from New Wave Of British Heavy Metal icons RAVEN. In 2023, VOIVOD are commemorating their remarkable 40-year journey with a momentous milestone: the release of the special anniversary studio album titled "Morgöth Tales," which arrived on July 21 through Century Media Records. This album, once again recorded and mixed by Francis Perron at RadicArt Studio, mastered by Maor Appelbaum, and produced by VOIVOD themselves, showcases a captivating collection of fresh studio re-recordings. The band's current lineup carefully handpicked these selections, delving into their extensive and diverse musical catalog from 1984 to 2003. Additionally, "Morgöth Tales" features an all-new song and the eponymous title track, adding another layer of excitement. Hailing from Jonquière, Québec, VOIVOD is a prominent Canadian heavy metal band. Over the years, their musical style has undergone various transformations since their formation in the early 1980s. Initially rooted in speed metal, VOIVOD incorporated elements of progressive metal and thrash metal, forging a distinct and innovative metal sound. They are widely recognized as one of the "big four" Canadian thrash metal bands, alongside SACRIFICE, RAZOR, and ANNIHILATOR. Throughout their illustrious career, VOIVOD has attained significant influence and acclaim, making them one of the most revered metal bands from the 1980s. Their impact has transcended boundaries, garnering praise and inspiring numerous bands across a wide array of genres. The second portion of the show features a talk with John Gallagher from RAVEN who have their new studio album "All Hell's Breaking Loose" available now. RAVEN demonstrated incredible productivity from the early '80s to the late '90s, consistently delivering a new album every year or two. Following a hiatus that lasted a decade, they resumed releasing fresh material in 2010. Their latest offering, titled "All Hell's Breaking Loose," proudly stands as their fifteenth studio album. The foundation of RAVEN has always rested upon the talented Gallagher brothers: John on vocals and bass, and Mark on guitar. Throughout their journey, the band has seen several drummers come and go, but since 2018, they have been accompanied by the skilled Mike Heller (known for his work with FEAR FACTORY and MALIGNANCY). Heller's presence on board marks his second album collaboration with RAVEN, with "All Hell's Breaking Loose" being recorded at his studio in Los Angeles. In 2023, RAVEN's musical direction remains faithful to the path they carved during the glorious era of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM). However, they harness their decades of experience and combine it with modern production techniques when crafting the songs that adorn "All Hell's Breaking Loose." This fusion allows them to uphold their musical roots while embracing the advancements of the present day.
John Gallagher of Raven chats about his more than 40 year in the business, staying true to the band's sound, and the latest release, "All Hell's Breaking Loose." Welcome to our 4th installment of "The Power of Metal Compels You!" Ian blathered incessantly, as usual, and both he and Dan went on and on about the Death Angel/Kreator/Sepultura concert. What a line-up! And these old-timers proved that the originators still hold the keys to the thrash-truck. Hey. That was good. I need to write that down. We also review the new EP by Carolina thrashers All Hell, "All Hail the Night". Now with listeners in 69 countries! No kidding! Thanks for listening, humans. This episode has two outros! Two of the mightiest Halloween songs ever, “To Walk the Night” by Samhain and “Ghost Walking” by the Might Sphincter are absent from Spotify and since we use that platform to do these collabs, for fun, I threw them on the end of the episode. The Kousins talk about the KISS's eleventh studio album and first without makeup and the first "official" album without Ace Frehley, "Lick It Up." Vinnie Vincent was announced as the new guitarist and the band began recording the new album. After a miserable tour for the previous album, it was time to take off the makeup. This was a call to all hard rock fans that KISS was back and KISS was for real. The Kousins go track-by-track over the album. When you think of this album, are you thinking "Gimme More?" Or do you think "All Hell's Breaking Loose?" Call the TLDNetwork hotline and leave a message for the Kousins at 336-422-NUMB (6862). This podcast was recorded in The Less Desirables Studio South and recorded via Zoom, sponsored by Bull's Tavern in WSNC.
