Four of the Prime/MRx studies presented at AMCP relate to glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist – or GLP-1 – drugs. Earlier analysis of real-world data showed low adherence and increased cost of care for individuals in the first year of GLP-1 therapy. Prime/MRx has been a leader in GLP-1 insights, and three studies at AMCP take a fresh look at the GLP-1 data as it relates to weight loss. We have Ben Urick, Health Outcomes Reseach Senior Principal from Prime/MRx, here to walk us through the research.
Jazz-laden melodies are typically the sonic output of “The Big Easy” but this week, it's a special episode as we take you to the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Annual Meeting, which was in New Orleans. Leading researchers from Prime Therapeutics and Magellan Rx are at the show, and we talk with these health care experts from our Clinical and Health Outcomes teams who are using integrated medical and pharmacy claims data to evaluate real-world drug utilization, managed care pharmacy programs, and associated costs of care for a range of conditions, including weight loss, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and multiple sclerosis. And, in the spirit of our host city, we have a little fun with our guests and see how much they know about “The Big Easy.” We even had a drop in visit from Susan Cantrell, AMCP CEO, who talked with us about how AMCP is on the forefront of pharmacy trends, but also how the organization seeks to improve access to care and reduce costs, particularly as health care trends show that the pharmacy benefit is becoming more expensive. Dig into the research All newsroom content https://www.primetherapeutics.com/ Guests: Landon Marshall, principal, health outcomes research Ben Urick, senior principal, health outcomes research Yuqian Liu, senior director, clinical account services Kyle Thompson, principal, data scientist Nick Friedlander, clinical program pharmacist Pat Gleason, assistant vice president, health outcomes David Eckwright, senior director, clinical project and program management Kristen Reimers, senior vice president of specialty clinical solutions
This year marks the second AMCP Annual meeting where Prime and MRx have showed up as one organization. But what does it mean for our business to show up at a crucial trade event like this? We are joined by two of our leaders responsible for putting our best foot forward at AMCP Annual, Pat Gleason, Assistant Vice President of Health Outcomes, and David Eckwright, Senior Director of Clinical Project and Program Management, to tell us more.
We are fortunate to have Susan Cantrell, AMCP CEO, join us for a conversation on what this show means and how it continues to have an impact on the health care industry.
Cancer care represents a rapidly rising and disproportionate share of overall health care spend. Medically integrated dispensing has been associated with better outcomes, lower waste and better patient care experiences for members receiving. Recognizing this value, payers have developed integrated dispensing networks to supplement traditional dispensing sites; however, little information is available comparing total cost of care. During this conversation with Landon Marshall, health outcomes research principal at Prime/MRx, we take a closer look at the AMCP study, Medically Integrated Dispensing of Oral Oncolytics: Real-World Cost of Care Comparison to Traditional Dispensing.
A key aspect of what AMCP seeks to achieve is improved access to care, and our next study looks closely at the factors that may impact that access. Social determinants of health are the conditions in a person's environment that affect health, function, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. These factors contribute to as much as 80% of variation in health outcomes. In this segment, Kyle Thompson, data scientist principal with Prime/MRx, talks about how the development of a Medicare member-specific medication nonadherence risk score, related to social determinants of health, can improve how a member manages medication and adheres to their doctors prescription.
The mission of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy is to enhance the quality and affordability of health care. Prime/MRx is likewise focused on this same mission, which is even more crucial when you consider a key category driving health care spend today are specialty drugs, which are typically injections or infusions that are self-administered or administered by health care professionals. We caught up with Kristen Reimers, clinical pharmacist and senior vice president, Specialty Clinical Solutions at Prime/MRx, to talk about some of the education sessions at AMCP that touch on this important business segment.
Nothing might matter more than getting new talented and bright pharmacists in our door to get hands-on experience of specialty and medical drug management from a managed care perspective. YuQian Liu, Senior Director of Clinical Account Services, talks about how our ASHP accredited residency program allows people interested in managed care pharmacy to build their careers. She talks about the importance of developing a firsthand understanding of medical and pharmacy benefit integration and strategy. And touches on the skills and mindset needed that helps kick-start careers as a managed care pharmacist.
We're about to hear about an award-winning research study. Recently, a number of generic multiple sclerosis medications supported by the American Academy of Neurology have become more widely available. Managed care pharmacists can aid individuals in transitioning to generic therapies, reducing total drug spend and member cost. But just how successful can this transition be? Prime/MRx researchers took a closer look, and Nick Friedlander, clinical program pharmacist with Prime/MRx, explains how transition may lead to remarkable savings and improved health outcomes.

Texas residents should be aware of the potential dangers involving prescription medications. According to the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, as many as one and a half million people are affected by prescription drug injuries every year in the U.S. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, however, indicates that this number is not accurate. The FDA asserts that a large number of medication errors go completely unreported. For this reason, the full number of injuries associated with drug errors may be much higher than the 1.5 million figure cited by the AMCP. Psychology Today notes that on a list that identifies the top causes of medical malpractice in the country, medication mistakes come in at number four. That is among other forms of malpractice such as missed or incorrect diagnoses, inappropriate treatment regimes, surgical mistakes, and more. Staying safe can be a matter of life and death when prescription drugs are involved. Anytime an error involving a medication is suspected, a Texas resident should reach out to an experienced lawyer for help. Susan Cantrell is the CEO of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP), the professional association leading the way to help patients get the medications they need at a cost they can afford. AMCP’s diverse membership of pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and professionals in life sciences and biopharmaceutical companies leverage their specialized expertise in clinical evidence and economics to optimize medication benefit design and population health management and help patients access cost-effective and safe medications and other drug therapies. AMCP members improve the lives of nearly 300 million Americans served by private and public health plans, pharmacy benefit management firms, and emerging care models. AMCP advocates at the national and state level for developing and applying evidence-based medication use strategies that improve access to medication, enhance patient and population health outcomes, and safeguard the wise use of health care dollars. Before AMCP, Susan was Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Americas for the Drug Information Association (DIA). She is also a registered pharmacist and former hospital and home care pharmacy administrator.

The Pharmacy Podcast #PharmacyFutureLeaders Managed Care / Health Policy / U of Minnesota Today we're going to be talking with Ryan Cotten: Ryan Cotten is a 4th year University of Minnesota PharmD student passionate about creating unique solutions by managing limited healthcare resources. Following his P2 year, he interned at ClearScript learning about clinical services and the PBM industry. After his P3 year, he was AMCP chapter president and led his team to the AMCP National P&T Competition. He was the lead author on a health policy research paper "Pricing History Analysis of Orphan Drugs (1983-2015)" which he presented at two national pharmacy conferences. He's looking to work in a managed care pharmacy residency to further grow as a leader and practitioner. Everyone's leadership road is different, let's start with where you are today, and how you got into your current position. How do you feel you became a leader/innovator and how did the opportunities in Minnesota specifically help you? You mentioned you are doing many of your experiences in state. Why did you specifically choose Minnesota in the first place? I've been to the Twin Cities, to Mall of Americas, Twins games, but what's it like living in the Twin Cities? How do you fit the aspects of choosing, applying for and visiting potential managed care residencies in your P4 year? Can you tell us the difference between the importance of accreditation as it has to do with managed care versus other residencies? Students know where to go in looking for community or hospital residencies, but where do you look for managed care residencies? You mentioned a conference in Washington DC. What does it mean to be a managed care pharmacist, I understand the concept in a broad sense, but what experience do you need in professional school to move that title forward?
