Arron Murphy-Paine, a community leader, activist, and the CEO of Amarr's Heart Foundation hopped on the mic to discuss the current state of gun violence in the region, his foundation's upcoming events, and to bring awareness that the murder of his son, Amarr Murphy-Paine, is still unsolved. After Amarr was murdered outside Garfield High School in 2024, Arron transformed his grief into a mission for violence prevention and community service. He founded Amarr's Heart Foundation to honor his son's legacy through the motto K.I.N.D. (Kind Interaction Negates Destruction). Arron is a vocal advocate for victims, identifying gaps in the city's support ecosystem and showing us the need for proactive, grassroots-level intervention rather than reactive measures. While his son's murder remains unresolved, he emphasized the community's power in changing that. Amarr's Heart Foundation is hosting the first annual Chalk & Talk on Thursday, June 4 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Garfield High School, 400 23rd Ave, Seattle.

Send us a textFrom a family vacation that turned tragic to the creation of Pakistan's first specialized children's heart hospital, Ana Tanveer Abdullah's journey illustrates how profound loss can spark transformative change. When Ana's athletic, academically gifted brother Daniel collapsed unexpectedly at age 15, no one suspected a heart condition. Despite receiving a pacemaker after being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, Danial passed away at 16 while awaiting a heart transplant in India. This devastating loss became the catalyst for an extraordinary mission.Together with her father and Farhan Ahmad (who also lost a child to congenital heart disease), Ana founded the Pakistan Children's Heart Foundation with an ambitious vision: to build the country's first specialized cardiac hospital for children. Through innovative fundraising campaigns inspired by Danial's athletic spirit and tireless advocacy, they've now achieved what once seemed impossible. The Children's Heart Hospital opens in Lahore this April, eliminating the need for Pakistani families to seek expensive treatment abroad. Beyond the physical facility, their "Project by Danial" trains young cardiologists and surgeons specifically in pediatric cardiac care, ensuring sustainable healthcare improvements throughout the country.Ana's story reminds us of the remarkable resilience of the human spirit. "We are trying to find peace in this world," she reflects. "He had already found his peace." The Positive Aging Community hosted a compelling and interactive discussion with the Purple Heart Foundation, co-hosted by Jim Hatch. The event, now available to watch on YouTube, brought together experts and advocates dedicated to supporting veterans, particularly as they transition into civilian life and explore new career opportunities.Jim Hatch, representing the Purple Heart Foundation, opened the conversation by sharing his personal connection to the military and the foundation's evolving mission. With deep roots in serving wounded veterans, the foundation is now focused on staying relevant to the needs of modern veterans-especially those navigating life after service.A central theme of the discussion was the unique opportunity for veterans in the death care industry. Kenny Johnson, founder of Sunbeam 369, and Mike Henshaw, both passionate advocates for veterans, highlighted how this field can be both meaningful and practical for those transitioning from military service.Pre-Planning and Green Burials: The panel emphasized the importance of pre-planning for end-of-life care, not only for peace of mind but also for financial and emotional well-being. Green burials were spotlighted as an eco-friendly and increasingly popular option.Career Pathways: The death care industry offers stable, rewarding careers for veterans. The skills and discipline gained in the military translate well to this field, which requires compassion, organization, and a strong sense of service.Certification and Training: The Sunbeam 369 Institute is launching a new training program to certify funeral service providers as Veterans Burial Benefits Specialists. This initiative aims to ensure that veterans and their families fully understand and utilize the burial benefits they have earned. The discussion underscored a critical gap: many veterans are unaware of the full range of burial benefits available to them. By educating both veterans and funeral service professionals, organizations like the Purple Heart Foundation and Sunbeam 369 are working to bridge this gap, ensuring that those who have served receive the dignity and support they deserve. As the Positive Aging Community continues to foster dialogue around aging, service, and support, this event stands out as a testament to the power of collaboration. By connecting veterans with meaningful career opportunities and vital resources, these organizations are not only honoring service but also paving the way for brighter, more secure futures.Watch the full discussion: Positive Aging Community with the Purple Heart FoundationFor more information on veteran burial benefits, career training, or to get involved, visit the Purple Heart Foundation and Sunbeam 369 websites.

Australia's 'Queen of Hearts' was born on the day when Dawn Beaumont brought her mother back to life. Even as her extensive, professional First Aid training kicked in - as Dawn calmly performed CPR on her mum in the middle of a crowded theatre foyer - the experienced health and safety manager grappled with the knowledge that her mother was having a potentially fatal heart attack. With a family history of coronary disease and obesely overweight and a smoker, Janet was (in her daughter's words) 'literally a ticking time bomb'. Thankfully, Janet survived her 2013 health emergency. And now, she's become an integral part of her daughter's epic Duathlon support crew - as Dawn takes on the world-record-breaking challenge of running and riding 20,000km in 200 days to raise 2 million dollars for the Heart Foundation and the RFDS in 2025. Because it takes a true, modern-day Warrior Woman to claim the title of Australia's Queen of Hearts.***Thanks so much for listening to this episode of the Flying Doctor Podcast. Next Level Soul with Alex Ferrari: A Spirituality & Personal Growth Podcast
In the labyrinth of human emotion, few experiences are as universally profound and isolating as grief. Today, we welcome Colin Campbell, a filmmaker, professor, and father, whose journey through unimaginable loss offers a poignant exploration of love, community, and the transformative power of grieving together. Colin's story is not just about the pain of losing his children, Ruby and Hart, but also about finding the strength to continue, supported by the ancient wisdom of communal mourning.Colin Campbell shared the heartbreaking story of the crash that claimed the lives of his beloved children, Ruby and Hart. They were on their way to Joshua Tree when a drunk and high driver collided with their car, forever altering their lives. Ruby, a talented artist and voracious reader, and Hart, a charming and humorous young man, were both killed on impact. Colin and his wife, Gail, survived but were left to navigate the immense void left by their children's absence. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Colin found solace in the Jewish traditions embraced by his family. Although he identifies as an atheist, he was profoundly moved by the practical and communal aspects of Jewish mourning rituals. One such ritual, Shiva, involves friends and family visiting the bereaved's home for seven nights, providing support and allowing the grieving process to unfold in a shared space. "It was an amazing gift," Colin reflected, noting how these gatherings helped him and Gail process their grief by talking about Ruby and Hart and feeling the love and support of their community."Grieving in community is essential," Colin emphasized. This sentiment contrasts sharply with the common cultural expectation to grieve in isolation. Many people feel abandoned by friends and family during their darkest times, a theme Colin has encountered repeatedly in grief groups. The loneliness of grief can be overwhelming, but the Jewish practices of communal support, like Shiva and the daily recitation of the Mourner's Kaddish, offer a powerful antidote to this isolation. These rituals require the presence of a community, reinforcing the idea that we do not have to face our grief alone.Colin's exploration of grief also touches on the importance of rituals in managing the pain of loss. For him, the Jewish tradition of actively participating in the burial—literally throwing the first handfuls of dirt onto the coffin—was a deeply painful yet necessary act. It confronted him with the stark reality of his loss, helping to combat the powerful force of denial that often accompanies grief. "We have to feel the pain to feel the love," Colin stated, highlighting the intertwined nature of these emotions.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSCommunal Support in Grief: One of the most powerful aspects of Jewish mourning traditions is the emphasis on communal support. Grieving in isolation can intensify feelings of despair and loneliness, whereas grieving in the presence of loved ones can provide a sense of connection and support.Embracing the Pain: Allowing oneself to fully experience the pain of loss is crucial for healing. Denying or avoiding the pain only prolongs the suffering. Rituals that confront the reality of loss, like those in Jewish tradition, can help in processing grief more effectively.Transformative Power of Rituals: Rituals, whether religious or personal, can provide structure and meaning during the chaotic period of grief. They serve as touchstones that help the bereaved navigate their emotions and find a path toward healing.Colin's journey through grief has also led him to foster a deeper sense of purpose. Alongside his wife, Gail, he has founded the Ruby and Heart Foundation, which supports initiatives like W AC, an organization that sends writers to underserved schools to read aloud to children and provide them with free books. This initiative honors Ruby and Hart's love for reading and ensures their legacy continues to inspire and support others. In sharing his story, Colin Campbell offers a beacon of hope and resilience. His willingness to lean into the pain, supported by community and tradition, provides a roadmap for others navigating the turbulent waters of grief. By embracing the love and the pain, Colin has found a way to keep Ruby and Hart's memory alive, transforming his grief into a source of strength and connection. Please enjoy my conversation with Colin Campbell.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Remember, you can watch the Superpowers for Good show on e360tv. To watch the episode, download the #e360tv channel app to your streaming device–Roku, AppleTV or AmazonFireTV–or your mobile device. You can even watch it on the web.Devin: Amanda, what do you see as your superpower?Amanda: When Josh first reached out to me, he graduated from NYU Stern Business School. He brought in a few of his middle school friends. I was actually very self-conscious because I didn't really know anything about business. I didn't have a business background or anything like that, but I realized pretty quickly that my superpower is not necessarily the financial, logistical, the minute hard skills but more of the soft skills, more of the way that I relate to people, the way that I can understand people, the way that we're working with teenagers.Devin: Amogh, what do you think is your superpower?Amogh: I think my superpower lies in the fact that I am young, and I drive youth empowerment, youth leadership.Devin: Gavin, what is your superpower?Gavin: I wanted to use my superpower and engage students. So actually, with the organization I helped with, with their first-ever networking workshop. So, I show students how to use LinkedIn, how to send messages to politicians, industry professionals.Years ago, I had Joshua's Heart Foundation's founder, Joshua Williams, on the show to talk about his remarkable organization. At the time, he was a young teenager and had already been at work feeding people who were hungry and food insecure for nearly a decade. When he launched the effort, he understood he was creating a movement to feed those who need help but likely didn't fully appreciate the more radical impact he was having by empowering children and teenagers to lead.Recently, we reconnected, and he introduced me to some of the young people who lead the effort today.Amanda Aviles serves on the newly constituted National Advisory Board. Members of the board are Joshua's Heart alumni volunteers scattered around the country. Some participated with Joshua as peers in the earliest days when their little hands and arms couldn't carry much food but when their minds could immediately grasp the impact of providing food to someone who needed it.Gavin Poore and Amogh Baranwal are both in high school. They are members of the Junior Advisor Board, which has the primary responsibility for leading the organization. They are two of the day-to-day leaders. Both trace their roots in the organization back in time for years. Amogh shared his recollection of volunteering at age six:The one memory that I have that has always stuck with me is that when I was in line, we used to have people come to us, and we would shop with them like a grocery store, so they would get to choose exactly what they wanted to take home. A family came with another six-year-old, and this was the first time I had seen someone who looked like me–we're the same age, we might have gone to the same school, or we might have had similar life experiences at that age. When I gave his family that box of food, I saw his smile brighten up. I was shocked. Something that I take for granted. I never think, “When's the next food going to be on the table?” Or when the next family dinner is going to be. It's something that just happens. So, to see someone my age see so much joy from something that I took for granted really opened my eyes to the many problems that many people face–even at six years old. So, it is cool to tell people that I started volunteering when I was six, but it's sad to know that there are six-year-olds who didn't get that same opportunity because of the circumstances they were put in. So ever since that day, I have been grateful for our Foundation for giving me these opportunities and allowing me to experience giving back firsthand. His story represents well the experiences of other young people who volunteered regularly with Joshua's Heart. The truly remarkable things about the nonprofit founded by a four-year-old may not be the people it feeds but the leaders it builds.AI Episode Summary* This is an interview with three young people involved with Joshua's Heart Foundation: Amanda Aviles, Gavin Poore, and Amogh Baranwal.* Joshua's Heart Foundation was started in 2005 by a young boy named Joshua who had a passion for feeding the hungry.* The foundation's primary mission is to fight hunger and engage and empower youth in that fight.* The organization is facing the challenge of keeping its founders and early participants involved while preserving the youth-led nature of the organization.* The organization is split into three parts: core volunteers, a junior advisory board, and a national advisory board.* Amanda Aviles believes her superpower is her ability to connect with people and understand them, particularly younger individuals.* Amogh Baranwal believes his superpower lies in his youth and the ability to empower and inspire other young people.* Gavin Poore sees his superpower as youth engagement, helping other young people find their voice and engage in positive change.* The organization can be supported through donations, and volunteers are accepted, but mainly from the South Florida area.* The best way to stay in touch with the organization is through its website and social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn.Guest ProfilesAmanda Aviles (she/her):Director of Strategy, Joshua's Heart FoundationAbout Joshua's Heart Foundation: Joshua's Heart Foundation (JHF) was founded in 2005 in Miami Beach, Fla. by Joshua Williams when he was four years old. In October of 2019, a 19-year-old college student vanished after stopping at a Chevron gas station late one night in Alabama. Shortly after she was reported missing, her blood-stained, damaged car was located in an apartment parking lot almost an hour away. But thanks to surveillance footage, an eyewitness testimony, and DNA evidence, a suspect was charged. This is the story of Aniah Blanchard. BONUS EPISODES patreon.com/goingwestpodcast CASE SOURCES 1.
