Some Other Sphere

Joining me as my guest for this episode is paranormal historian, researcher, writer and speaker, Allison Jornlin. Allison has been investigating strange phenomena for more than twenty years. Inspired by Chicago's Richard Crowe, who kick-started U.S. ghost tourism in 1973, she developed Milwaukee's first haunted history tour in 2008. Allison currently works as a professional weirdo, speaking throughout the U.S., writing for a variety of publications, and developing haunted history tours for American Ghost Walks. In addition, she is a passionate champion of important female figures from the history of paranormal research and investigation, whose contributions to these fields have often been unfairly overlooked. Allison's Paranormal Women blog highlights the groundbreaking work of people such as Lahe Gay, Zora Neale Hurston, Eleanor Sidgwick, Thelma Moss and Catherine Crowe, who is the main subject of our conversation in this episode. Born in 1790, English mystery writer Catherine Crowe became fascinated with the work of German doctors and scientists who dared look into the realm of unexplained phenomena beginning in the 1820s. She strived to make their research available to ordinary English readers by writing two non-fiction books – the second of which, The Night Side of Nature became immensely popular. This 400-page work combines the stranger elements of classical history, shares discoveries by top German researchers, and compiled worldwide paranormal accounts from antiquity to Cathrerine's time. It played a crucial role in popularising terms such as Poltergeist and Doppelganger and was very much ahead of its time. In 1854, Catherine conducted the first recorded single-blind study of a haunted house. Unfortunately, the chance for further investigation was curtailed after she was sidelined by a trumped-up scandal, which ultimately led to her fall into obscurity. I start the interview by talking with Allison about how own her career as a professional weirdo began. From there we move on to Catherine Crowe, discussing her background and what prompted her interest in paranormal research and writing what is perhaps her best-known non-fiction work, The Night-Side of Nature. Allison tells the story of Catherine's Haunted House investigation, and the sad events soon after that which led to her contributions to paranormal research being overlooked for so long. You can find out more about Allison and her work (including further details on Catherine Crowe) at her website https://paranormalwomen.com/. One of the Dairy State's most notorious hauntings, The Ridgeway Phantom, terrorized the Old Military Ridge Road that ran from the Fox Valley in the Northeast to Prairie du Chien in the Southwest of the state. From the 1840s, residents of the Driftless area near Ridgeway have spoken about the phantom, who acts more like a troublemaker and trickster than a traditional ghost as he stalks the road. But how could the Ridgeway Phantom have been influenced by the traditions of the Welsh and Cornish lead miners who had been coming to the area by the tens of thousands? And how similar was it to a contemporary legend happening on their home island at the exact same time. Over a century later, reports of a strange creature starting happening in Mineral Point just a few miles away. How are the cases connected and are there any recent eye witness reports of the Ridgeway Phantom? And what if it's not the spirit of a deceased human, but something completely different? From shapeshifter to vampire, this is the definitive guide to Wisconsin's most famous ghost, The Ridgeway Phantom. The vestiges of the Maribel Caves Hotel lie in ruin near the town of Cooperstown in Manitowoc County. Nicknamed “Hotel Hell”, it has been home to many legends. It allegedly burnt three time, all on the same date. It was the scene of a mass murder and suicide. It was owned by Al Capone during prohibition. It served as a hideout as well as a stop for his rum-running business, which included John Dillinger. And the most intriguing, the front fountain contained a portal to hell. A legion of demons escaped and unleashed hell on the nearby town. Fortunately, a white witch stepped in and banished the demons from whence they came and sealed the portal. Although the legends may only contain kernels of truth, its ominous stone façade and dilapidated state are sure to attract even more tall tales. Mike and Jeff take a deep dive into the hotel which was built in 1900 and reveal the true history of The Maribel Caves Hotel. http://badgerlandlegends.com/hotelhell/ (Check out Hotel Hell t-shirts here) Mike Huberty, hailing from the town of Big Bend, near Milwaukee, is the owner of American Ghost Walks, a haunted history tour company with locations in Maine, California, Illinois, Minnesota, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and started in our very own Badger State of Wisconsin - with tours in Lake Geneva, Milwaukee, Madison, Waukesha, Bayfield, and the Wisconsin Dells. It was the crime that shocked 1950s America, Ed Gein was born in Wisconsin in 1906 and grew up on a farm desperately attached to his strict, religious mother. When she died, his isolation and terrifying obsessions led to stealing corpses from graves and making trophies and keepsakes out of their lifeless bodies. In 1957, he was arrested for murdering two women and was arrested and institutionalized for the rest of his life. However, many believe that his spirit never left the property where he committed his atrocities. To this day, there have been reports of strange noises and sightings of a dark figure lurking around the place. His gruesome work sensationalized the small town of Plainfield, Wisconsin to its core. For years afterwards, people spoke in hushed tones about the man who had turned his farmhouse into a slaughterhouse. The inspiration for Robert Bloch's popular novel and Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, Psycho, Gein's real story, his psychiatric diagnoses, and his impact on (as well as being a victim of) Twentieth Century Culture is much more fascinating than just his crimes.
