For today's episode we have a classic true crime story, and a once popular "science" (but was then debunked). The Lake Bodom murders still puzzle people as to the who the real whodunit truly is. Phrenology was once a popular way to determine a person's personality, but then quickly was disproven as inconsistent. Our throwbacks are the Full House "Stephanie" books, and beaded safety pins on shoe laces. Remember, you can write in with your stories or throwbacks to ithappenedtopod@gmail.com, or message us on Instagram.

It was An event so brutal, so incongruous with the serenity of its setting, it is now forever interwoven in every fiber of the Nordic nation, rewriting its history with a pen dipped in blood.

It was supposed to be a pleasant camping trip. Four teenagers set out on a couples getaway intending on roughing it in a single tent. But by the next morning, three would be dead, the fourth brutally injured and a prime suspect in what became known as the Lake Bodom Murders, Finland's most famous unsolved murder. The sole survivor of the incident would live to tell the horrifying story hundreds of times. But was he the victim or a monster in disguise? Thanks for listening! (WoHos!)Sorry! We had some audio issues, but I think I got them worked out! You'll forgive the later-than-usual release of this episode. I got sidelined by a little of the mid-summer doldrums. This week Mac and I looked at TENEBRAE from Italy and YOU'RE NEXT in our detour into slashers.Next time we will be back on track discussing movies about possession with THE EXORCIST from the US (Which I think will be a first-time watch for Mac) & THE WAILING from South Korea (Which is a " I lost the number of times I have watched" movie for us).Stuff we talked aboutI overstated the stats (Maybe? They are hard to track) or child molestation. According to the National Center for Victims of Crime, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse. The Instagram scholar I like a lot is Dan McClellan, on Thread at 4040915, who has a podcast called Data Over Dogma. Thanks for all your support! The Lake Bodom murders is one of the most infamous unsolved homicide cases in Finnish criminal history. On 5 June 1960, at Bodom Lake in Espoo, Uusimaa, Maila Björklund and Anja Mäki (both 15) and Seppo Boisman (18) were killed by stabbing and blunt-force trauma to their heads while sleeping inside a tent. The fourth youth, Nils Gustafsson, then aged 18, was found outside the tent with broken facial bones and stab wounds. Despite extensive investigations, the perpetrator was never identified and various theories on the killer's identity have been presented over the years. Gustafsson was unexpectedly arrested on suspicion of committing the murders in 2004, but he was found not guilty the following yearSourceshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Bodom_murdershttps://allthatsinteresting.com/lake-bodom-murdershttps://www.discoverwalks.com/blog/finland/10-bone-chilling-facts-about-the-lake-bodom-murders/https://www.ranker.com/list/unsolved-lake-bodom-facts/cristina-sanzahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ujSsyEBgwEThinking of starting your own podcast? (The Haunting of Goatman's Bridge) *** Over six decades later, the brutal, unsolved murders at Lake Bodom continues to haunt Finland... and beyond. (The Lake Bodom Murders) *** A man finds his neighbor laying in the snow, frozen solid – yet somehow she survives. I'll tell you the miraculous story of Jean Hilliard! (The Hibernating Woman) *** We like to think that 21st Century medicine has brought us more into science and further away from superstition and magic – and that's mostly true, for the Western World. But in South Africa they've not given up the chanting, the dancing, and in some cases… the sacrificing of human lives… all in the name of healing. (Muti Medicine: Ritual Human Sacrifice) *** For anyone who has used a ride-share service like Uber or Lyft, it's probably happened to you at least once. You're waiting on your ride to pick you up, you see a car coming your way and you think it's there for you – only to find out a few seconds later that it's not. One college girl had this same experience – only she got in to that wrong vehicle, and ended up being murdered for her mistake. (An Uber Mistake) *** The history of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is wrapped up in Chicago's wealthiest families having their summer homes there. But even as early as 1912, when people were writing about the city, they said the second most significant thing about this town was the sanitariums. (The Lake Geneva Sanitariums) *** Some old documents were found recently that tell the story of the first time in recorded history that someone was struck by a meteor! As of now, 15 feet have washed ashore on the coast of the Salish Sea in British Columbia, Canada and a few in the state of Washington that matched some of the other feet in British Columbia. Thirteen of those feet have been identified. Where are these feet coming from? Who do these feet belong to?Suddenly, Our True Crime Podcast, with hosts Jen and Cam, breaks through the static. They tell us about Samantha and Calvin, the love birds who are moving into this eerie home. Everything is not as it seems and you won't believe what is uncovered. Then, Nikki, of Serial Napper, comes on. The classic horror film, Friday the 13th, may seem unreal but Nikki tells us about a terrifying tragedy that occured in 1960 in Finland. Four teenagers went camping at Lake Bodom and were slain. This case seems like it is straight out of a horror movie, but unfortunately, these are true events that will make you second guess that summer camping trip.Spine Chillers and Serial Killers, hosted by Emma, Tash, and Becky, switches on. Their first story happened on Friday the 13th in 1972 when Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was headed to Santiago, Chile. What happened is known as the Andes flight disaster, or the Miracle of the Andes. Then, we are presented with a disturbing occurrence from a Friday the 13th in 2012. Brittany Kilgore was murdered during, what she thought, was an S&M session. Lastly, you won't believe what happened on a Friday the 13th at 13:13 to a 13-year-old boy in Lowestoft, England.Thank you for listening to Rogue Transmissions.Brought to you by Edward, of Octoberpod AM on all podcast platforms and Octoberpod Home Video on YouTube, and J.T. of the Brew Crime Podcast, Crime Trials, Active Shooter, and more! Find Weird Darkness wherever you listen to podcasts: https://linktr.ee/weirddarkness IN THIS EPISODE: The pentagram is most often seen in film and television as a symbol of Satan, or dark witchcraft – but that is not the reality of pentagram. The symbol has a much wider and richer history than what is portrayed in today's entertainment mediums. While the practices and beliefs of Wicca, gnostics, and druids use the pentagram in their practices, as do Satanists, the pentagram was (and sometimes still is) used by Christian believers as well – which I'm sure comes as quite a shock to those who don't know the full history behind this five pointed star. (The Paranormal Pentagram) *** I have told innumerable stories involving the death of someone, be it brutal, mysterious, or even darkly humorous. But it is high time I share a few stories of people who died… but then returned to the living. Not as ghosts, but as regular flesh-and-blood human beings who just happened to survive their own death. (They Survived Their Own Deaths) *** The Lake Bodom murders may well be the most famous unsolved homicide in Scandinavian Criminal History. Occurring in 1960 and claiming 3 victims with 1 injured survivor it is a Finnish zeitgeist that at one time or another had the whole of Finland enraptured. It is now a buzzword for murder and mystery in the small country. (The Lake Bodom Murders) *** The tale of the Bell Witch has gone on to become one of the most well known hauntings in American history and an iconic historical horror story, but of course it has left us to debate and speculate on whether any of it is true, and if so just what was the Bell Witch?
