Episode 51: In this episode we conclude our coverage of Angela Garcia's case on Crime to Burn. Angela was faced with an impossible decision, risk another trial or accept what is known as a Dark Plea from prosecutors to secure her freedom. However, when he offered her the plea, prosecutor Richard Bell knew just how flawed his case against her was and many have suggested that his offer of this plea was really an effort to try to prevent his office from negative optics related to the mishandling of this case. And perhaps they're right, after all Richard Bell is now a sitting judge in Ohio. Were his actions an attempt to prevent Angela's conviction and the errors made in the case from tarnishing his reputation and negatively impacting his aspirations to win a seat at the bench? We'll tell you what he did and said, and you can decide. His actions may not have been illegal but they certainly don't seem very honorable. Episode 50. Angela Garcia was a 22 year old mother of two when her house caught fire claiming the lives of her two toddler daughters. After her first trial ended in a hung jury, prosecutors tried Angela a second time. However, this time they had new witnesses and new statements "remembered" by investigators 8 months after the event. When her second trial ended in another hung jury, prosecutors completely changed their tactics for a third go at Angela Garcia. But Angela Garcia didn't commit arson. There were some guilty people in the courtroom though, they just weren't the ones sitting at the defense table. Join us now for Part 2 of Angela Garcia's wrongful conviction story on Crime to Burn. Episode 49. Angela Garcia was a 22 year old mother of two when her house caught fire claiming the lives of her two toddler daughters. Angela soon found herself standing in a courtroom accused of arson, murder, and insurance fraud. What evidence did investigators have to prove Angela had done such a horrible deed? They had some photos and some arson investigation myths that had been debunked already by the time she was tried. Two juries couldn't be convinced of her guilt and resulted in back-to-back mistrials after the juries reported they were hopelessly deadlocked. A third jury would send her to prison for a crime she didn't commit. This is the story of Angela Garcia and how a dark plea continues to cast a shadow over her life. What did Angela Garcia trade for her freedom? This is Part 1 of Angela's story on Crime to Burn. I talk to anthropologist Angela Garcia about the "anexos" in Mexico City that keep dozens of so-called addicts locked up in a single room for years using harsh methods such as chaining them to the wall. She has written about these for her new book, "The Way That Leads Among The Lost." I also talk to her about addiction in the New Mexico where she is from and any hopes of breaking the cycle. For more stories and to support my work, go to: www.crashoutmedia.com Support the Show.
Angela Garcia, MD, pediatric physiatrist in the Division of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, discusses Children's pediatric pain rehabilitation program and the team's work to improve functioning in children with chronic pain.
On November 20th 1999, Angela Garcia's home caught on fire. Surprised and crawling in the dark, she was not able to find her children before the blaze forced her to jump out of a 2nd floor window. She ran to get help but tragically her children would die before anyone could reach them. The State wrongfully accused and convicted her of arson and murdering her family. After nearly 20 years in prison, the prosecution's case began to fall apart for lack of evidence. A “dark plea” was offered to Angela in May of 2016. If she accepted, she would be released from incarceration in 5 years. But there was a catch, she would have to admit to guilt. What would you do? This is her story.
Based on over a decade of research, a powerful, moving work of narrative nonfiction that illuminates the little-known world of the anexos of Mexico City, the informal addiction treatment centers where mothers send their children to escape the violence of the drug war. The Way That Leads Among the Lost: Life, Death, and Hope in Mexico City's Anexos (FSG, 2024) reveals a hidden place where care and violence are impossible to separate: the anexos of Mexico City. The prizewinning anthropologist Angela Garcia takes us deep into the world of these small rooms, informal treatment centers for alcoholism, addiction, and mental illness, spread across Mexico City's tenements and reaching into the United States. Run and inhabited by Mexico's most marginalized populations, they are controversial for their illegality and their use of coercion. Yet for many Mexican families desperate to keep their loved ones safe, these rooms offer something of a refuge from what lies beyond them--the intensifying violence surrounding the drug war. This is the first book ever written on the anexos. Garcia, who spent a decade conducting anthropological fieldwork in Mexico City, draws readers into their many dimensions, casting light on the mothers and their children who are entangled in this hidden world. Following the stories of its denizens, she asks what these places are, why they exist, and what they reflect about Mexico and the wider world. With extraordinary empathy and a sharp eye for detail, Garcia attends to the lives that the anexos both sustain and erode, wrestling with the question of why mothers turn to them as a site of refuge even as they reproduce violence. Woven into these portraits is Garcia's own powerful story of family, childhood, homelessness, and drugs--a blend of ethnography and memoir converging on a set of fundamental questions about the many forms and meanings that violence, love, care, family, and hope may take. Infused with profound ethnographic richness and moral urgency, The Way That Leads Among the Lost is a stunning work of narrative nonfiction, a book that will leave a deep mark on readers. On this week’s edition of the Access Hour, we take you back to pre-pandemic times and listen in on a Feb. 20th lecture at UofL on "Legal Passing: Navigating Undocumented Life and Local Immigration Law” as part of the Department of Sociology’s 2020 Jon H. Rieger Speaker Series. The speaker was Dr. Angela S. García, a sociologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Her research centers on international migration, law and society, urban sociology, and well-being. Dr. García studies the consequences of socio-legal inclusion and exclusion for undocumented immigrants across the United States, Mexico, and Spain. Focusing on state and local immigration laws and executive administrative action, she charts how immigrants’ everyday lives, incorporation, and well-being are shaped by the legal contexts in which they reside. Her book, Legal Passing: Navigating Undocumented Life and Local Immigration Law (University of California Press 2019), compares the effects of restrictive and accommodating state and local-level immigration laws on the everyday lives of undocumented Mexican immigrants in the US. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “That's too hard- there's no way I could do that?” When life gets us down, we want to give up because it is the more comfortable thing to do. But what we're really afraid in this moments… is reaching our full potential. In today's Focus Friday, I ask the straightforward question: Why not try the hard thing? In hopes that it will inspire us all to get out there and get things done... even when they seem unattainable. What's the worst thing that could happen? Falling does not break us; it makes us stronger. Rise to the challenge, be vulnerable, and say yes! In This Episode: A training session with Angela Garcia [ :50 ] Why not try the hard thing? This was the most requested topic yet! Angela Garcia and I dove into gun play in early childhood. To be honest, we entered this discussion with different perspectives on whether or not we should let kids play with toy/fake guns, and what the role of the adult is to teach children about the real implications that guns have on society. We had a raw, respectful conversation that changed my opinion on the matter. We discussed when gunplay changes from developmentally appropriate play to a coping mechanism or means to express emotions. Angela and I went into white privilege and how it factors into our approach to tiny humans and weapon play. This is a good one that you will not want to miss! Head over to @seed.and.sew on Instagram to participate in the conversation and provide your feedback on this episode! How much can a city's immigration laws actually effect a state? To what extent do states preempt local immigration initiatives? Angela Garcia, a graduate student of University of California, San Diego studies state and city regulation of immigration and asks "what the range of possibilities?" Garcia's research allows the study of state preemption of local immigration initiatives as cities become a catalyst for change in the state. States become influenced by cities' local immigration initiatives and ultimately get projected on a higher level. Garcia develops a typography that brings together demonstration effects, steam valve effects, the opposing preemption, and the state leadership/exclusivity when there is no action at the local level.
