By 1987, Jim Henson had already provided us with so much great entertainment from all his remarkable creations--including some pretty wonderful Christmas specials. But his best was yet to come... this is a look back on A Muppet Family Christmas that first aired on ABC on December 16th, 1987. We'll look back at one of the best holiday specials of the decade and why it came from a period when everything to do with the Muppets was firing on all cylinders. This show was the ultimate crossover, but some legal issues did emerge and if you weren't watching on that night back in 1987, you probably never saw the true, original special... It's that time of year again folks! We're keeping up with a recently minted tradition of covering a different version of Charles Dickens' immortal classic A Christmas Carol by discussing the wonderful adaptation by none other than The Muppets. THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL is not only full of all the laughter, whimsy, and heartfelt sentiment that have come to be synonymous with the Muppet gang, but it's also one of the most directly faithful adaptations of Dickens' tale ever put to film.We share our favorite moments from the film as well was dive into why its unique interpretation of the story is particularly special. Also featuring a Patron-only section where we discuss the 1987 holiday special THE MUPPET FAMILY CHRISTMAS -- which, if you've never seen it, it's available on YouTube and extremely worth your time -- this is a warm and joyful conversation that we really hope you enjoy!Patron Only Segment: THE MUPPET FAMILY CHRISTMAS5:10 - THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROLSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What's up, dudes? Mike Westfall from Advent Calendar House and I take a trip to Emily Bear's house to visit the Muppets! That's right! We're talking the 1987 special "A Muppet Family Christmas"! We get into obscure cameos, Sam Eagle's one-liners, and more! Kermit and the gang travel to Fozzie's mom's house to surprise her for Christmas. Little do they know that Emily Bear has planned a vacation and has rented her house to Doc and Sprocket as an air BnB. The sheer volume has Doc building bunk beds to accommodate the crowds. Fozzie builds the perfect comedic partner snowman, and the Swedish Chef invites a turkey to stay with them in the hopes of cooking him for dinner. After watching a Muppet Babies home video, Gonzo almost gets into a fight with the lecherous turkey. The Sesame Street crew wassails into the farmhouse, and Kermit and Robin pass it on with the Fraggles. When Piggy is caught in a snowstorm, Doc rides to her rescue! Then the annual carol sing ensues!A "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" play? Check. An Electric Mayhem performance? Got it. A two-headed monster Santa? Yes, but only if the other monsters pull the sleigh! Kevin and Mike take a break from the world of skateboard movies for the holidays to discuss some of their favorite Christmas specials - they're joined by Kevin Eldridge from The Flopcast to talk about the storied classics everyone knows (Rudolph, Charlie Brown), some lesser-known gems (A Cosmic Christmas, Muppet Family Christmas), and some holiday disappointments (looking at you, Opus special.) From the very first animated Christmas special ever shown on American TV (Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol) to otter jug bands to Pee-Wee's Playhouse we cover a whole lot of ground - give a listen to see if your favorite gets name-checked by the gang. We'll be back in 2024 with more skateboard movie action! Happy holidays, y'all!
Ah, the '80s Christmas TV specials! They were like a magical sleigh ride through tinsel-town wonderlands. Picture this: families gathered 'round tube TVs, eagerly awaiting the annual festive specials that sprinkled joy and warmth into our living rooms. We had the iconic classics, from "A Charlie Brown Christmas" with its heartwarming message to the enchanting stop-motion wonders of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town." Who could forget the Muppets, dashing through snow-covered sets in "A Muppet Family Christmas"?But the '80s offered more than just traditional tales. It was a decade of innovation, ushering in modern favorites like "The Snowman," a wordless masterpiece weaving magic through animation and music. And let's not overlook the glitz and glamour of music specials, where stars like Bing Crosby and David Bowie harmonized in unforgettable duets. What made these specials extraordinary wasn't just their entertainment value; it was the way they brought us together. They were more than TV shows; they were traditions, sparking that twinkle in our eyes as we sipped cocoa and sang along with Bing or danced to the Muppets' jolly tunes. In the midst of the neon '80s, these specials were our North Star, guiding us back to the warmth and wonder of the holiday spirit. And to this day, they remain cherished memories, twinkling brightly in the nostalgia of Christmases past.If you are new to the podcast then please consider following us on the platform that you love, we can be found most anywhere that you listen to your favorite podcasts. It's Ian's birthday (soon)! So he's running the dang podcast!!! For his Birthday Boy's Choice picks, he lands on two classic-adjacent tunes from years not yet covered on the show. "Happy Holidays" by Bing Crosby (with the Music Maid and Hal and John Scott Trotter and His Orchestra) seems like a commercial for hotels masquerading as a Christmas song, but it's actually a stealth New Year's song masquerading as musical theatre masquerading as a Christmas song. "Winter Weather" by Benny Goodman (with vocals by Peggy Lee and Art Lund) is a refreshing clarinet-heavy palate cleanser. The ranking music in this episode is the medley from history's greatest film, Muppet Family Christmas.

This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott were reunited after a few weeks apart to talk through the week's big national security news, including:“In the Land of the Blind, the One-Eyed Man is Still Guilty of Seditious Conspiracy.” The jury in the Oath Keepers trial came back last week, convicting every defendant of at least one criminal offense—including the controversial charge of seditious conspiracy. What might this mean for other Jan. 6 investigations moving forward?“Morality? Puh-leeze.” Weeks of protests in Iran finally seemed to bear fruit last week when a regime official signaled that the morality police may be disbanded and laws requiring that women wear hijabs be repealed. But other regime figures don't seem on-board with that solution. Is this a sign that protests are succeeding? Where might they go from here?“Les Fleurs du MAL.” The litigation that led Judge Aileen Cannon to appoint a special master to review evidence collected by the FBI from former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate this past summer has finally culminated in its final form: an 11th Circuit ruling reversing Judge Cannon's order and disbanding the process altogether. Where will the investigation go from here? For object lessons, Alan celebrated Quinta and Ben's silver screen debut. Quinta recommended Rachel Maddow's new podcast series "Ultra." And Scott provided an essential Muppet holiday special update, flagging both that "A Muppet Christmas Carol" was being restored to its original form on Disney+ on 12/11 as well as an online version of the 1987 classic, "A Muppet Family Christmas." Also, Rational Security will be doing its listener-submitted end-of-year episode later this month! So be sure to send any topics you want us to discuss or object lessons you want to share to rationalsecurity@lawfareblog.com. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
