Your TSHE hosts have busy lives! So this week we're re-airing a true classic! Enjoy all of the deep Numb3rs, Castle, Bones discussions. We really covered Cop/Not Cop well! Also, let us know what you think of the new guest hosts at the beginning. Personally, we think they could work on their professionalism, but they're entertaining! At long last, Ann, Bobby and Hillary tackle the questions that have been on everyone's minds (and in the TSHE tickler file) for months now: What is (and isn't) a cop/not cop show, and more importantly, what—based on strict scientific criteria and rigorous research—are the best and worst cop/not cop shows? You'll know we weren't trifling when you see this episode is 2.5 hours long. Also discussed: The Word of the Day, a listener's (extremely welcome) cat pictures, the form-over-function failings of fondant, Hillary's hot takes on last week's Soderberghian Oscars, Bobby's myriad life updates after a couple of weeks away, and the deeply upsetting things Ann has seen in the bowels of Southdale Center.Connect with the show! This is your show, too. In this episode we discuss a murder that took 25 years to get a conviction on the murder. Why did the conviction take so long? And should the person convicted be convicted?
This week's guest is Tyler Fillion, the current Company 1SG and Senior Enlisted Advisor to the 75th Ranger Regiment Selection and Training Company. The Company conducts assessment and selection programs, known as RASP1 and RASP2, as well as a pre-Ranger School course known as SURT (small unit Ranger tactics). Additionally, the Company runs an extensive Pre-RASP program that prepares service members for RASP1. Tyler has been serving in the Army since 2005 and attended Ranger School shortly after a 15 month deployment to Iraq during the surge. That was his first exposure to Ranger Regiment soldiers, and after another deployment he attended one of the first editions of the RASP1 course in 2010. His career has taken him from 3rd Ranger Battalion, to Regimental Headquarters, to 1st Ranger Battalion, and now back to Fort Moore with Selection and Training. Tyler holds a Masters degree in Psychology with a focus on Industrial and Organization Psychology. It's very clear from our conversation that Tyler cares deeply about human performance and is a huge believer in the Army's H2F system. As you might expect from a leader in Ranger Regiment, he's all about challenging people to achieve things they might not have thought were possible. This episode has a lot of good information for any soldier who aspires to serve in Ranger Regiment, but it's also full of insight for anyone who is interested in how to incorporate human performance staffs into a military unit. The Rangers have been doing it for over a decade now, and Tyler speaks to how they get the most value out of their Ranger Athlete Warrior program. For insight into assessment and selection processes, Tyler recommended this documentary about the British Pegasus Company. To understand the culture in Ranger Regiment, Tyer recommended the 6-part Ranger Creed series. You can find those videos, along with plenty of others about life in Ranger Regiment on their YouTube channel. To find the monthly challenges we talked about, check out @75th_humanperformance_wellness on Instagram. RASP also has their own Instagram page that offers glimpses into the assessment and selection process. And finally, if you're ready to take the next steps towards becoming a Ranger, you can find their recruiting team here.

L'art visuel semble parfois inaccessible. I know. I know. Long term listeners know what's coming first but this first gift combo is an #AmWriting favorite for a good reason. The three of us own the same journal and nearly identical (save for the color of the elastic fastener and monogram) custom leather Fillion and we love them so much. Our favorite calendar/journal is, and has always been, the Leuchtturm1917 monthly planner with 136-page dotted notebook pages. We love everything about it - the monthly pages, the number of dotted pages, the weight of the paper, the pocket for stickers in the back - oh, it's so good. Sarina keeps a very eager eye out each year and two of our favorite days are the “what are next year's colors?” discovery day and the day Sarina hands over the new beauties in our color of choice. Sarina's planner is a thing of beauty so here's a pic of what her month usually looks like (stickers are for completing the day's word goal):What's a Fillion, you ask? Well, about ten years ago I bought a gorgeous tri-fold leather holder for a journal at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas and a very happy love affair was born. I actually met the woman who makes these lovelies, Lesha Shaver (pic below), owner of Little Mountain Bindery, and she's currently making a custom leatherbound book for a lucky someone on my holiday list this year. There are tons of options for the Fillion, but ours is the XL trifold with our initials in Huxley font. You can fit two notebooks in there if you want, plus the optional magnetic pocket is great for stickers, ruler, stencils, that sort of thing. I've been giving this Fillion to people as a thank you gift for years (for example, everyone who has blurbed my books has one with their initials and their favorite color elastic cording). In plucking the proper url to link in this post I just discovered Lesha has created a deluxe Fillion box set and now my mouth is watering. Given that we have our journals, now we need to have a very serious conversation about pens. I have choices, of course, but Sarina has OPINIONS. Her current favorites are:* Uniball Jetstream retractable fine (.7mm) ballpoint pens in black.* Pentel EnerGel RTX medium point (.7mm) retractable liquid gel pens in assorted colors. * Pilot Frixion light pastel highlighter with erasable ink and chisel tip 3-pack.I happen to love my black Sharpie ultra fine point pens, but that's just me. They do bleed through most journal pages, so I understand if you are offended. Here's the thing about the Pilot Frixion pens: they erase using the heat generated by the friction of he eraser on the paper and it's a perfect erase. I took Sarina's Frixion pen obsession to a whole new level and bought the big 24 set. Looooook how pretty….If our pen choices don't turn your crank, look around at one of our favorite sources for pens and other addictive office items, JetPens or MochiThings. I apologize in advance. Other fun things I've kept on a running list this year:Bulk blank notebooks with kraft paper covers (I keep the tiny ones, 10 for $24) in my pocket or wallet at all times because I'm 52 and starting to forget things. This adorable Kaweco fountain pen in smooth sage. It's tiny and light, and I love it. I linked the medium nib but it comes in lots of versions. The ink is specific to this pen and comes in lots of colors, too. I am terrible with glasses. Mine get left all over the place (there are three pairs of glasses in my woods, right now, sitting on stumps or logs I can't locate) and I scratch them far too quickly. That said, this soft but upright Tät Tat glasses (or whatever) case really helps. I keep it on my nightstand and consequently I've managed to hold on to at least one pair of unscratched prescription glasses. Mine's grey-blue.Oh, and since people ask me all the time about my glasses, they are Warby Parker Ainsley in Marzipan Tortoise. Did you know Sarina made her own journal for romance readers? Yes, indeedy. The Kissing Books Journal by Heart Eyes Press. In fact, Sarina told me she even keeps a “Gifts for Readers and Writers” list on Amazon, so here's that, too. Finally, since few of us need more stuff, don't forget about memberships to The Authors Guild or PEN America. Members of The Authors Guild get access to legal services, web services, insurance discounts, all kinds of great webinars and events, and the opportunity to build your community of writer friends. This year, The Authors Guild helped advocate for writers and got Amazon to change its ebook return policy and was instrumental in getting ZLibrary taken down and its creators arrested and indicted for piracy. We talk with Emirati Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh as well as Dr. Sanam Vakil, Deputy Head of Chatham House's Middle East and North Africa Program, about the UAE's foreign policy priorities as Council president, its abstention on the recent vote to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the relationship among the women ambassadors on the Council. Welcome to FASD Family Life, the show where we get REAL about raising children and youth with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. I am Robbie Seale your host, FASD educator, advocate and mother of four with FASD. I know the struggle is real, and so is success. In this 21st episode of FASD Family Life my guest, Chris Fillion, a 36 yr old with FASD and ADHD will share his perspective on growing up in foster care and the unfortunate events that unfolded when he aged out of care. Without adequate supports Chris struggled, and as a vulnerable youth he was easily led into mischief that ultimately led to criminal charges and prison. But his story does not end there. Get yourself a cup of coffee and buckle up its going to be a bumpy ride from adversity to advocacy. Today Chris is married, owns his own car, and is the Executive Director of a start up not for profit called WEAREYOU to serve at-risk-youth with a disability in his community of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Chris will tell you the struggle is REAL and so is success.Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/fasdfamilylifepodcast)
If there is one thing I think we can agree on, people with FASD will never cease to amaze us with their resilience and strength in overcoming significant obstacles or barriers in their lives. Chris Fillion, my guest today, is no exception. I have no doubt you will find his story a little familiar and “a lot of” inspiring. It is a true testament to his strength and the people who believed in him. Chris Fillion was diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder at the age of 9. He grew up in the Child and Family Services system. He has some experience in the justice system, and currently is head of a non-profit organization called WEAREYOU Services for at-risk individuals with a disability. WEAREYOU exists to assist individuals who may become involved with the law. Chris is also an advocate within the FASD community worldwide. His main goal in life is to help others and to provide education on FASD to help break the stigma against people who have been diagnosed with it. “I owned it (my FASD). I live with FASD. I can't see myself exist without FASD.” We delve right into Chris' early life and talk about how he came to be placed into the foster care system. Despite being diagnosed with FASD and ADHD, he was never told about his disability. This lack of understanding likely led to his involvement in the justice system. There are some interesting themes woven throughout Chris' life so far, including the importance of: Tethering to good people: how success can be tied to having people believe in you, understand the disability, and provide appropriate accommodations. Reframing: how being “in the hole” in jail was a better place than the general population and how after attending a workshop he realized that caregivers were struggling just like him. Acceptance: after many years of denial, he got curious about his disability and started to learn who he was, what his strengths were and discovered his passion in life. “I see the world differently than others. I see things in patterns. I see people do the same thing everyday…and then I can do a little bit of this and a little bit of that and now I become a better person.” Chris has devoted himself to helping people with FASD not only navigate the justice system but also people in the community understand the disability through his advocacy work and the creation of his non-profit.Our vision is to help Youth, Teen and Adults with special needs (unofficial diagnosis) stay out of the justice system and find them the right program within the community. Help the community understand avenge is not the answer. Provide the tools to support staff and families to understand the differences in the way these individuals may perceive and react to varying situations, thereby helping to solve problems before they get out of control. I have had the fortune to meet and talk with many individuals on the Spectrum who are doing incredible things and are finding meaning to their lives – whether that be as parents, working in a field they enjoy or pursuing something that speaks to their soul. It does not matter if one develops this vision early or late in life: what matters is they have come to a point where Chris says, they accept their disability, accept support from others and have the courage to go after their dreams. Chris ends our discussion with a quote that has kept him going. Let me know what you think of this cool dude and his story. Chris has great insight and thanks to the people who provided lifelines to him, he is now providing hope and lifelines for others. Support the show
