“I didn't want to be any attorney. I wanted to be a second chance attorney for our people,” Jade Mathis shares in a Detroit is Different conversation that moves from Black Bottom ancestry to courtroom advocacy and City Hall leadership. Jade's Detroit story begins with grandparents who migrated from Little Rock and Tuscaloosa during the Great Migration, met in Black Bottom, and built family roots on Dexter and Philadelphia, where her grandmother gardened, fed neighborhood children, and kept beauty alive on the block. Jade carries that same community care into her legal journey. After illness shifted her path from journalism to law, Jade pushed through LSAT setbacks, law school rejection, and taking the bar six times before becoming the attorney she promised God she would be. Her work included the Project Clean Slate, expungements, NAACP service, GED tutoring, and civil rights cases with Attorney Ben Crump traveling the nation, representing families struggling from police killings and fighting through litigation, protest, and grief. Now leading Detroit's Civil Rights, Inclusion & Opportunity Department, CRIO, Jade brings those lessons home: clean records, recognize grassroots leadership, defend rights, and make government answer to the people's future. The Rickey Smiley Morning Show delivers a lively mix of inspiration, headlines, and culture—starting with a powerful prayer to set the tone before diving into conversations that blend community impact with trending entertainment news. One of the biggest highlights is attorney Ben Crump teaming up with LL Cool J to launch a financial literacy platform aimed at underserved communities, offering tools and education to help close the wealth gap and support unbanked Americans. The show also unpacks Gayle King’s headline-making interview, where her ex-husband publicly apologized for cheating with one of her close friends years ago—a deeply personal story she says many women can relate to, even after time and healing. On the entertainment side, the crew reacts to K. Michelle making it clear she has no interest in collaborating musically with her fellow Real Housewives castmates, saying she’s focused on her own established career and not “dabbling” outside her lane. Meanwhile, hip-hop fans have something to look forward to as Lil Wayne confirms that Tha Carter VII is “coming soon,” though he admits the title and timing are still up in the air as he continues to stack new music. Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump - End menthol smoke products aimed at the black community. by John Catsimatidis
Looking back on 2021, it felt like maybe Black Americans got closer to knowing justice. In April, Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murdering George Floyd. And the day before Thanksgiving, three white men were found guilty of murdering Ahmaud Arbery. But 2021 wasn't all about victories. Last month, a jury in Wisconsin cleared Kyle Rittenhouse of multiple homicide charges after he shot and killed two people at a Black Lives Matter protest in 2020. Rittenhouse, who says he brought a semi-automatic rifle to the protest to “protect property,” successfully argued that he fired his weapon in self-defense. On this episode of Into America, Trymaine Lee is joined by two of today's most prominent civil rights leaders to explore whether Black people in this country can ever experience true justice. Reverend Al Sharpton, the founder of the National Action Network and host on MSNBC, says while there were setbacks, there was plenty to celebrate in 2021. “I think that we ought to mark those victories we get, so people will know we're not fighting alone.”Attorney Ben Crump, who represented both families of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd this year, agrees. “We're continuously on this journey. We take sometimes some steps forward and then there are going to be steps back.” But the guilty verdicts this year, he says, "give us hope for America.”For a transcript, please visit https://www.msnbc.com/intoamerica.
