You know all the advice about ignoring your inner critic, avoiding comparisons, and giving yourself credit for your achievements. But you can't shake the sense that the real you is something shameful, something you need to keep hidden at all costs, and that those people who say nice things about you would be horrified if they knew what you were really like. Friend, you've got Real You all wrong. The fact that there are parts of you that you'd hate to share with others doesn't make you wrong, or an impostor, or shameful. According to the sociologist Erving Goffman, you're completely normal. Your Imperfectionist Godmother is here to help you make friends with your secret self - and to see that everyone else has one too.Reference:Goffman, Erving. 1956: The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (University of Edinburgh Social Sciences Research Centre).
We have long lacked a biography of Erving Goffman. Partly this can be explained by Goffman's direction for his papers not to be opened to researchers after his death. This meant those who may wish to write Goffman's biography had a lack of material to draw upon. Dmirti Shalin, author of Erving Manuel Goffman: Biographical Sources of Sociological Imagination (2025, Routledge), has overcome this by developing the Erving Goffman Archives, a collection of correspondence, family histories, syllabi and reminisces which allows for this book to exist as the first true biography of the great scholar. In providing the details of Goffman's life, Shalin has provided new ways of looking at Goffman, showing how factors like his upbringing in a family of Russian Jewish immigrants, his relationship with, and the sad suicide of, his wife, his interactions with colleagues and his everyday interactions shaped his sociology. Along the way we are encouraged to look anew at Goffman's work on topics such as the presentation of self, mental health, gambling and gender. In doing so, we learn much about Goffman not just as a scholar, but as a man. In our conversation we cover the whole of Goffman's life, moving from his youth and onto the significant points in his career and their impact upon his sociology. We also discuss the archive and how it came to be and discuss what Goffman's legacy maybe for the future of democratic politics. Strap in and try to keep up, as we attempt to follow the peripatetic 58-year journey of one of the NBA's most wandering franchises - with New York-area sports beat reporter Rick Laughland ("A History of the Nets: From Teaneck to Brooklyn"). Today's Brooklyn Nets club began its life in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans - a charter member of the American Basketball Association, playing at the Teaneck Armory. A year later, they moved to Long Island (LI Arena, then Island Garden, then Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum) to become the New York Nets, winning two ABA championships (1974, 1976) behind superstar Julius Erving. Absorbed into the NBA in 1976, the team struggled financially and was forced to sell Erving, leading to early-season struggles. In 1977, they relocated to the Garden State as the New Jersey Nets, playing at Rutgers Athletic Center (now Jersey Mike's Arena) before moving to Brendan Byrne (aka Meadowlands) Arena in 1981. After almost becoming the "Swamp Dragons" in 1994, the early 2000s saw breakthrough success with Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin, and Richard Jefferson - making back-to-back NBA Finals runs in 2002 and 2003. Before a brief move to Newark's Prudential Center (2010–12), the team relocated to Brooklyn's purpose-built Barclays Center, with a complete franchise name, logo and color-scheme rebrand. Initially building around Deron Williams, they later pursued star power with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, followed by Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden in 2019–2021. Still bereft of an elusive NBA title, will the Nets continue to ply their trade in Brooklyn - or will they eventually return to their nomadic ways? + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): " A History of the Nets: From Teaneck to Brooklyn": https://amzn.to/41oxSev FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/

Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or new to the world of Ayurveda, this series promises to inspire, educate, and empower you on your own path to holistic health and well-being.My guest today is Radhika Erving from San Diego, California. Radhika came to Ayurveda after her experience with the autoimmune condition, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which she cured by following an Ayurvedic protocol. Her interest in Ayurveda was fueled by her godmother who encouraged her to delve more deeply. Initially, she worked as a panchakarma technician at the renowned Surya Spa in Los Angeles, its founder being Martha Soffer [I interviewed Martha in episode #32]. Although Radhika found the mentorship of Martha and the hands on experience she gained at Surya to be invaluable, she wanted to deepen her knowledge of the healing power of Ayurveda. During the pandemic, she enrolled in the Master's program in Maharishi Ayurveda & Integrative Medicine at Maharishi International University (MIU). While at MIU, she delved into every aspect of Ayurveda, but was struck by the profundity of the program's emphasis on the role of consciousness and particularly, the practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) on health and well-being. Radhika continues to be connected with MIU as a teacher's assistant in the MS Maharishi Ayurveda program. She also consults with clients privately and offers a variety of services through her business: Ayurveda Ma. Series: Guard the TreasureTitle: What the Bible Says About Slavery & EmploymentScripture: 1 Timothy 6:1-2; Matthew 11:29-30 NIVBottom line: Honoring God leads us to honor people. Honoring people blesses them, celebrates his message, and honors God.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESOUTLINESDISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDINTRODUCTIONPhilip Towner tells how when he and his buddies Erving int he military in England became Christians, they let their enthusiasm for Christ overcome their diligence in following the mundane rules about shined boots and clean uniforms. As a result, they quickly got a reputation from their superiors: Christians are sloppy and insubordinate soldiers.Another true story told by Kent Hughes is about 2 seminary students who seemed to always be standing around talking about God during work hours. “3 Chapters of John in the John”The worst though was when he noticed one go to the bathroom for 20 min. When he came out he overheard him tell his fellow-student, “I just had the most wonderful time. I read 3 chapters of the gospel of John.” No wonder he was becoming skeptical of Christians. Hughes, p. 148Most gospel sharing happens in the workplace. And it makes sense since we spend so much time there. People see us in action. How we work with people matters. The question we're answering today is what does the Bible say about slavery, employment & following Christ. In his book about living out your last days and dying well, Bill Bright, the founder of CCC or Cru as it's known today, talks about the day when he and his wife decided to fully surrender their lives to Christ. They changed their thinking about their lives and decided to live as a slave to Jesus Christ. They would only obey him. They would only do what he called them to do. And they did that for the rest of their lives launching a missionary ministry that would cover the globe. In 2020, they had 19,000 staff in 190 countries. CONTEXT50-60 million slaves in Roman Empire. About 1/3 of the cities were slaves.Slavery affected virtually every aspect of the Ephesian church.Half of all slaves were freed by age 30.Social status came by association. Not usually a race thing but an economic and social thing. Some stayed slaves for security (especially the poorer slaves). Slaves were cooks, managers, medical workers, and even government workers. Some sold themselves into slavery so that they could become legal Roman citizens getting those rights.Slaves could save money, own property, and even own other slaves. They were usually working towards buying their freedom.Roman slavery was similar but different from antebellum slavery. So when Paul calls slaves following Christ to respect their masters, it's not like the slavery of the south. While slavery (as commonly understood) is still a sin against God, Paul's focus is on even more than that. He's not just thinking about the social evils of his day. He's thinking on the gospel that speaks to all of those social evils at the same time.Yoke—typically symbolizes oppression in scripture. And yet Jesus talks about his yoke in Matt 11.“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”“ -Jesus in Matthew 11:29-30 NIVSERMON OUTLINE (influenced by David Platt's outline)How does the Bible speak to slavery (employment)?Slaves (employees) who follow Christ: Respect your masters (bosses). Why?Because they are made in God's image. (Genesis 1:26-27)So you don't slander God's name and teaching. (1 Tim 6:1)Because, if they are a believer too, they are worthy of even greater service from you as your brother in Christ. (1 tim 6:2)Not because slavery is legitimate. Slavery meansWe buy and sell you like propertyWe coerce you to work for our benefitGod is anti-slaveryWe're made in the image of GodTherefore, people are equal in value in God's eyes (and should be in each others' eyes)Slavery today—we should care about this.About 27 million slaves around the world today (more than ever)Most are young girls Much is for sex trade/forced prostitutionMuch is happening in the USGrateful for ministries like IJM, A21 and Doors to Freedom who work to eradicate this wickednessSlavery is spiritual too.We are all born into spiritual slavery—we're born slaves to sin, that's why we sin.Christ frees us from slavery to sin and the kingdom of darkness when we believe the good news that he saves us by grace through faith in him alone. He sets us free to serve him. If someone saves your life, you don't mind serving them the rest of the life you almost didn't have.We grow in Christ to the extent that we gladly surrender all to him as our King and Lord, Creator and Redeemer who ransomed us and set us free. While we are yoked to Christ (by choice), it's not your typical slavery:”Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.“ Matthew 11:29 NIV”For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”“ Matthew 11:30 NIVThe Apostles referred to themselves as slaves to Christ (not just Apostles):Paul introduced himself 3X this way (Philippians, Romans and Titus)Peter in 2 PeterJude in his letterJames in his letterCONCLUSIONBottom line: Honoring God leads us to honor people. Honoring people blesses them, celebrates his message, and honors God.What about me? Do I consider my boss/teacher worthy of full respect?Am I thinking about the 27 million (mostly young) people in slavery today?Have I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ?PrayNOTESFrom David Platt's commentarySlavery in History—4 typesSlaves in Paul's Day that had trusted Christ. Respect your masters…Because they are made in God's imageSo you don't slander God's name and teachingBecause, if they are a believer too, they are worthy of even greater service from you as your brother in ChristNot because slavery is legitimateGod is anti-slaveryThis parallels how we are to relate to our employers as followers of Christ. We respect them tooBecause they are made in God's imageSo we don't slander God's name and teachingBecause, if they are a believer too, they are worthy of even greater service from us as their brother in ChristSlavery todayAbout 27 million slaves around the world today (more than ever)Most are young girls Much is for sex trade/forced prostitutionMuch is happening in the USGrateful for ministries like IJM, A21 and Doors to Freedom who work to eradicate this wickednessSlavery is spiritual too.We are all born into spiritual slavery—we're born slaves to sin, that's why we sinChrist frees us from slavery to sin and the kingdom of darkness when we believe the good news that he saves us by grace through faith in him alone. We grow in Christ to the extent that we gladly surrender all to him as our King and Lord, Creator and Redeemer who ransomed us and set us free. The Apostles referred to themselves as slaves to Christ (not just Apostles):Paul introduced himself 3X this way (Philippians, Romans and Titus)Peter in 2 PeterJude in his letterJames in his letterLet's ask some summary questions:Q. What do I want them to know?A. That how we treat others reflects on God and his message.Q. Why do I want them to know it?A. Because we're all made in his image and therefore are worthy of full respect whether we deserve it or not.Q. What do I want them to do about it?A. Consider all people worthy of full respect. Consider God worthy of full allegiance.Q. Why do I want them to do it?A. Because God deserves it and created people in his image.Q. How can they begin to do this?A. Evaluate how you're treating those who have authority over you at work or school or home.OUTLINESOutline Bible (Willmington)SECTION OUTLINE SIX (1 TIMOTHY 6)Paul addresses the workers, the wicked, the wise, and the wealthy. He closes his letter with some final instructions for Timothy.I. Welcome to the latest Music Business Worldwide Podcast, supported by Voly Entertainment.Joining MBW founder, Tim Ingham, on this podcast is Julius Erving III, better known as J. Erving.Erving is the founder of Los Angeles-based Human Re Sources, a distribution and services company working with premium independent artists. Its successful clients since launch have included Brent Faiyiz, Pinks Sweats, Ant Clemons, and YBN Nahmir.Right now, though, people are focusing on Human Re Sources for one artist more than any other: RAYE. In February 2024, two years after that signing to Human Re Sources, RAYE swept the UK's BRIT Awards, with a record-breaking six wins including Album Of The Year. There is, then, lots to ask J Erving about the success of independent artists like RAYE – and what that reflects about the wider music business. On this podcast, we also ask him about his previous life as an artist manager, his personal motivations, and his decision in 2020 to sell Human Re Sources to Sony Music and The Orchard.Music Business Worldwide's Podcasts are supported by Voly Entertainment (previously known as Voly Music).
Julius Erving, widely known as Dr. J, was born February 22, 1950, in Roosevelt, New York. Attending the University of Massachusetts, Erving honed his skills before entering the professional realm, eventually landing with the New York Nets further. However, it was his move to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1976 that truly propelled him into the spotlight. Paired with his exceptional talent, Erving's leadership and charisma helped elevate the 76ers to new heights, landing an NBA championship in 1983. Erving earned numerous accolades, including 11 NBA All-Star selections and two NBA All-Star Game MVP awards in 1977 and 1983. His retirement in 1987 marked the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy that forever changed the way basketball was played and perceived. Learn more about your ad choices. Most governments around the world – whether democracies or autocracies – face at least some pressure to respond to citizen concerns on some social problems. But the issues that capture public attention — the ones on which states have incentives to be responsive – aren't always the issues on which bureaucracies, agents of the state, have the ability to solve problems. What do these public agencies do when citizens' demands don't line up with either the supply of state capacity or the incentives of the central state? Our guest, Dr. Iza Ding, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University, examines one way in which bureaucrats try to square this circle. In her recent book The Performative State: Public Scrutiny and Environmental Governance in China, Iza argues that state actors who need to respond but lack substantive capacity can instead choose to perform governance for public audiences. Iza explores the puzzling case of China's Environmental Protection Bureau or the EPB, a bureaucratic agency set up to regulate polluting companies. This issue of polluted air became a national crisis during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics when athletes were struggling to breathe let alone compete. Since then, Chinese citizens have been directing their pollution-related complaints to the EPB, which Iza found, has been given little power by the state to impose fines or shut down polluting factories. But that doesn't mean the civil servants working in this agency do nothing. Instead, Iza documents how and why they routinely deploy symbols, language, and theatrical gestures of good governance to give the appearance of dynamic action – all while leaving many environmental problems utterly unaddressed. We talk with Iza about how she uncovered these performative dynamics through months of ethnographic research in which she was embedded within a Chinese environmental protection agency. She also tells us about how she tested her claims using original media and public opinion data. Finally, we talk about how her findings about performative governance in the environmental space translates to China's COVID-19 response.Works cited in this episode:Beraja, Martin, et al. Larry Bird and Julius Erving had one of the most massive fights in NBA history. It was near the end of the 3rd quarter. Bird had 42 points and Erving only had 6 points. Bird was talking major trash to Erving and that led to a throw-down. J Erving is a driver of culture at the intersection of music, media, sports, and technology; he has powered and helped break musical acts such as Brent Faiyaz, Pink Sweat$ and RAYE. Top 3 Value Bombs 1. You have to have something that cuts through. It could be an artist's voice, their tone, the melodies, the lyric. But ultimately, when you find that combination of all of these and then someone has a very unique personality and persona, those are the makings of a real superstar. 2. There's no expiration date on great. 3, Put the work in. If you put in 3 times more time and hard work, there would be so much gap between the players and it would be so hard for them to catch up. Now that the Panthers have filled the role of veteran swing tackle, what is the biggest remaining roster need? In the world of basketball, defense is just as important as offense. And when it comes to locking down the opposing team's top scorers, few players in NBA history can match the skills of 5x champion as a key member of the Showtime Lakers and 1987 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Michael Cooper. In this video, Coop takes us on a deep dive into his top five defensive assignments. From guarding the likes of Larry Bird and Isiah Thomas, to shutting down George Gervin and Alex English, Cooper proved time and time again that he was one of the best defenders to ever step onto the court.
