Do you ever worry that you're not serious enough for academia? That you're constantly playing whack-a-mole with hiding your many frivolous and unimpressive traits as you try to convince everyone that you deserve your place at the table? That you're a big old fake because you need to curate yourself so much in order to seem like you belong? If so, you're not alone - and it's not because you're flawed. It's because you're yet to uncover academia's dirty little secret: that it's just a job. If you can get your head around that, life will be much less stressful.ReferencesGoffman, Erving. 1956: The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (University of Edinburgh Social Sciences Research Centre).Guignon, Charles. 2004: On Being Authentic (London: Routledge). Three unforgettable encounters from three legendary regions. A South Mississippi witness shares years of escalating activity including giant rocks hurled into a river, powerful wood knocks, a dog violently slammed against a trailer, and a midnight charge through the trees that shook the ground. Then we head to Erving, Massachusetts, where old backwoods stories still linger in the forests of western New England. Finally, a Georgia witness recounts a crystal-clear nighttime sighting of a towering hairy figure crossing the road in full headlights near Baconton. Real voices, chilling details, and one episode Bigfoot listeners will not forget.
Let’s catch-up on a variety of sports action from the past weekend. NBA 1st Round Playoffs and the Tragic Orlando Magic When a basketball team (at any level) misses 23 straight shots during a game, that team is more than likely going to lose. The NBA’s #8 seed Eastern Conference Orlando Magic was at home on Friday night. They were leading the #1 Detroit Pistons 3-2 in their best-of-seven series. The Magic raced out to a 60-38 halftime advantage and had their home crowd ready to celebrate the team’s biggest first round upset in history. Then they played the second half. The Orlando Magic couldn’t hit the proverbial broad side of a barn over the final two quarters. Orlando scored just 11 points in the third quarter. The fourth quarter produced a paltry eight points. At one point, the Orlando Magic missed 23 consecutive shots. The tiny 19-point second half total in Game 6 was the lowest ever recorded in the NBA’s long playoff history. Detroit was easily able to overcome the 22-point halftime deficit and won 93-79 to even the series at three games apiece. Sunday night’s Game 7 found Detroit back at home to win the finale 116-95. The #1 East seed Pistons advance into Round 2 this week against #4 Cleveland. On Monday morning, the Orlando Magic announced the firing of fifth-year coach Jamahl Mosley. As I have mentioned over the years, it’s a lot easier for a professional sports team’s ownership to fire the head coach rather than an entire roster of players. That coach wasn’t on the floor missing 23 shots in a row in Game 6. The Boston Celtics did, indeed, die by the 3-point shot Just like Orlando, the #2 Eastern Conference #2 seed Boston Celtics took at 3-1 series lead before losing three straight games to the #7-seeded Philadelphia 76ers. As we covered a few weeks ago, the Boston Celtics thrive or die by their ability to make 3-point shots. The NBA’s fourth-most prolific 3-point shooting team during the regular season clanked home just 13 of 49 long-distance shots (27%) in a 109-100 Game 7 home playoff loss to Philadelphia Saturday night. The Celtics blew a 3-1 playoff advantage for the first time in the team’s storied history. Boston had been 32-0 all-time when leading by such a wide margin. This year’s Celtics also lost three of the four games played in their hometown at historic Boston Garden. Philadelphia 76ers fans rejoiced after their team finally won a decisive Game 7 playoff game on the road in Boston for the first time since Julius “Dr. J.” Erving played for the Sixers in 1982. Saturday night’s Game 7 in Boston saw the visiting 76ers zoom to a 30-15 first quarter advantage and never relinquish that lead. Boston played Game 7 without injured star forward Jayson Tatum. He was dealing with soreness in one of his legs and was held out of the game as a precaution. Tatum and his teammates will now have five months to recover, practice their outside shooting, and, perhaps, consider adding a legitimate inside presence prior to next season. The Houston Rockets failed to achieve a first round lift-off for the 2nd straight year Houston’s Rockets sizzled during the 2024/2025 regular season but fizzled in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. The team quickly reacted by adding veteran sharpshooter Kevin Durant to beef-up the Rockets’ scoring during the 2025/2026 season. Unfortunately, the NBA #5 Western Division seed Rockets crashed and burned in the first round of the playoffs once again. In the first two games against the #4 Los Angles Lakers, Kevin Durant sparkled on offense. Unfortunately, the other four Houston starters seemed to stand around and wait for their designated shooter to carry the offensive load. Durant was injured during Game 2 and didn’t play again for the rest of this series. The Rockets looked likely to win Game 3 but then blew a six-point lead in the final 30 seconds to go down 0-3 against 41-year old LeBron James and the Lakers. Houston found a way to win games 4 and 5 before getting drubbed 98-78 on Friday night in Los Angeles to conclude their season with a final loss. The Lakers played the entire series without two of its key starters – Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Houston may be looking at a few shake-ups for the roster and, perhaps, the team’s coaching staff after a second straight one-and-done playoff performance. PGA Tour – Cameron Young put the sleeper hold on the rest of the field in Miami The PGA Tour finally returned to Miami’s famed Doral Country Club Blue Monster golf course this past week. While some golfers may have trembled while standing on the tee at the tour’s most difficult par-4 #18, stoic Cameron Young seemed to love every minute of it. The bearded 28-year old golfer with the signature pause at the top of his backswing was winless in his first five seasons on the PGA Tour. Notably, though, Young posted six top ten finishes in the tough golf majors in his early years on the tour. Cameron Young was overdue to win. Sundays’ victory became Young’s third title in the past nine months. He broke through with his first PGA victory in August, 2025 in Greensboro. Young added The Player’s Championship title in March for career win #2. Cameron Young told reporters Sunday, “When the golf course is difficult and the conditions are difficult, that tends to make it easier for me mentally. Young led from start to finish in all four rounds of the Cadillac Championship tournament at Doral. His 19-under par total was six shots clear of World #1 golfer and runner-up Scottie Scheffler. Cameron Young even called a one-stroke penalty on himself on the second hole as his golf ball wobbled on the fairway. He said, “Your heart sinks when you see it move, but it moved. That’s part of what golf’s about. There’s no one who is going to give me a penalty there but myself.” Keep your eye on this golfer in the upcoming PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open at Royal Birkdale in England. Savannah Bananas packed 102,000 BananaFans into Texas A&M’s Kyle Field Saturday It’s not football season yet, but you wouldn’t have known that in College Station, Texas on Saturday night. Kyle Field is the massive football stadium home of the Fightin’ Texas Aggies. On Saturday night, the stadium was filled with 102,000 fun seekers as baseball’s crowd-pleasing Savannah Bananas arrived to play (of course) the Texas Tailgaters. “BananaBall” has been sweeping the nation with sell-out crowds everywhere they play. This talented traveling team utilizes a number of “get the fans involved” humorous antics to help make baseball games more fun to watch. It’s baseball’s equivalent of the Harlem Globetrotters – except on steroids. Every Savannah Bananas baseball game becomes a party unto itself. The actual game (as if it really mattered) was won by the Texas Tailgaters 4-3. Speaking of baseball, NY Yankees’ legendary radio announcer John Sterling passed away early Monday at age 87 He was best known for his unabashed enthusiastic radio calls for his beloved New York Yankees. John Sterling’s signature game-ending calls of “The….Yankees win!” were enjoyed by fans in the New York City metropolitan area for 36 years beginning in 1989. At one point, John Sterling didn’t miss a Yankees radio broadcast for 5,060 consecutive regular season games. That was a span covering more than 30 seasons. The New York Yankees posted Monday, “John Sterling breathed life and excitement into Yankees games for 36 years while wearing his passion for baseball and the Yankees on his sleeve. The symmetry between John and his audience was both undeniable and magical.” John Sterling was at the microphone for the last five New York Yankees World Series championships. He retired in 2024 after the season ended. Sterling required heart surgery early in 2026. John Sterling’s enthusiasm and talent behind the mic will be sorely missed by all of us baseball fans. Even the most stubborn owners of a failing business eventually must face the facts that their business may never become profitable. LIV Golf is owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The oil-rich nation’s investment conglomerate is worth more than $1 trillion. It holds a variety of assets which are generally expected to deliver a reasonable rate of return to the fund. To date, LIV Golf has run through an estimated $5 billion of Saudi PIF funds during its first four years of operation. The sports media (chasing rumor after rumor hoping for bad news) pounced on a story this week that the Saudi PIF may be ending their support for LIV Golf soon. How soon? No one knows. That hasn’t stopped the anti-LIV Golf crowd from generating headlines about a looming closure of the upstart league. LIV Golf president Scott O’Neill emerged Thursday prior to the opening round of the tour’s event in Mexico City to say that the league is fully funded through the August, 2026 season ending events. He was asked, “What about next year”? No comment. At some point, every business needs to be able to stand on its own. The Saudi group was initially excited and proud to begin a worldwide professional golf operation. It hoped to rival the PGA Tour and the DP World (European) tours. Losing $1 billion per year only amounts to about 1% of the Saudi PIF assets. Make no question about it, the Saudis’ investment in LIV Golf has become a giant money pit with no end in sight. How did we get here? By early 2022, the Saudi PIF hired golf legend Greg Norman to put together a new worldwide golf league. Norman dangled plenty of bonus signing money (well over $100 million in several cases) to lure some of the PGA Tour’s biggest stars to jump leagues that spring. At least $1 billion would eventually be paid just to have these players under contract for three to four years (depending on each player’s negotiated deal). American golf stars such as Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Bryson DeChambeau all made the leap to LIV Golf. The new LIV Golf League initially offered tournament purses of $25 million (now up to $30 million) to a field of just 54 (or so) players. That was nearly three times the $8 million average tournament purse being offered by the US-based PGA Tour. Each LIV event (prior to 2026 when the league went to a 72-hole format) initially featured a 54-hole competition. Reminder – LIV is the number 54 in Roman numerals. In addition to individual titles, LIV golfers also participate on a season-long four-man team. Every tournament pays an extra $5 million to the three teams posting the lowest total scores for the week. It appeared that money seemed to be no object to the Saudi PIF. Each year has seen insufficient revenues to cover massive losses. LIV Golf plays more than half of its events outside of the United States. That presents a big problem in trying to attract a US television audience. A tournament in Singapore, Australia, or South Africa will be played in a time zone which makes “live” TV coverage in the US quite unattractive to home viewers. Who is going to watch golf on television during the overnight hours? LIV Golf’s actual on-air television coverage itself (which I find more interesting to watch than most PGA Tour events) has been hampered by poor distribution. The year 2025 brought the current television deal with FOX Sports. However, finding LIV Golf on television from day-to-day on one of several different FOX outlets is akin to playing “Whack-a-Mole” daily. It’s quite confusing and almost as if FOX is intentionally trying to bury the golf coverage. See for yourself at this link. The Saudi Public Investment Fund spent at least $1 billion just for signing bonuses for the players. LIV Golf has then lost about $1 billion per year on bloated tournament purses and oversized operating expenses. Television audiences have been shrinking (primarily due to lousy TV placement) instead of growing. The trends are not the friends of LIV Golf. “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” That saying is often attributed to genius Albert Einstein. It definitely applies to the Saudi owners of LIV Golf as Season #5 nears the halfway point. The media pounced on information which surfaced this week that LIV Golf is likely “toast” – perhaps even before the end of this season in late August. The usual suspects (including LIV Golf’s biggest “hater” – Brandel Chamblee at Golf Channel) have reacted with “I told you so!” glee. Not me. I fully admit to have been rooting for LIV Golf to find its niche in professional golf. Remember the ABA? My youthful self in the 1970’s was a big supporter of the American Basketball Association. I still shoot hoops with my ABA red, white, and blue basketball! The ABA’s innovative three-point shot helped to make its basketball games rather unique and more fun. This creative new league also placed an emphasis on higher-scoring contests in contrast to the NBA’s more deliberate playing style of the 1970’s. The ABA placed franchises into growing markets such as Denver, San Antonio, Indianapolis, Salt Lake City, and Louisville. Yes, there were numerous franchise failures in the ABA. The league was woefully undercapitalized and lost millions trying to play in weak markets. ABA franchises outbid the NBA for the services of future Hall-of-Fame stars like Julius (Dr. J.) Erving, Moses Malone, George Gervin, Rick Barry, Dan Issel, and David Thompson. The league also attracted a younger audience to games and on television to watch the league’s higher scoring and entertaining contests. In 1976, four ABA teams (Denver, San Antonio, Indianapolis and the Virginia Squires-turned New York/New Jersey Nets) agreed to join the NBA. Salt Lake City was able to lure the NBA’s Jazz away from New Orleans to Utah a few years later in 1979. Some basketball fans laughed at the ABA’s basketball. Many traditionalists made fun of the ABA’s 3-point line. Years later, it was the NBA which added four key ABA franchises and the league’s 3-point shot. Yes, the ABA helped to shape today’s NBA. Likewise, PGA Tour golfers have benefited from the presence of LIV Golf LIV Golf started poaching golfers away from the PGA Tour in 2022. Almost immediately, the PGA Tour began raising its tournament purses to keep other remaining golf stars from contemplating their own exit to LIV. LIV Golf’s limited its fields to 54 (or so) golfers with “no-cut” events. That insured every player would receive a minimum paycheck for their weekly efforts. By contrast, most PGA Tour events begin with a field of 144 to 156 golfers. Half of the field is cut after the opening 36 holes. Those sent home early leave without earning a dime for their troubles that week. Taking its cue from LIV golf’s star-laden but smaller tournament fields, the PGA Tour began creating several “no cut” tournaments a few years ago featuring only the highest ranked 70 golfers. That type of event may not have occurred without LIV Golf’s competitive presence. Some media critics have laughed at LIV Golf’s 4-man team competitions within each tournament. Perhaps the media should take note that the TGL (Tomorrow’s Golf League) recently concluded its second year of indoor golf competitions. This popular weekly made-for-television golf series features four-man teams comprised of top PGA stars! Let’s see. Higher purses, smaller “no cut” fields, and team competitions. None of those were on the scene for PGA players prior to LIV Golf’s entry in 2022. Truth – LIV Golf has been a flop in the US Competing in the United States against the established PGA Tour has been tougher than expected for LIV Golf. Few top US golf courses have been willing to commit to months of course preparation and the financial obligations required to host a top-level men’s golf tournament. Several LIV Golf events in America have come and gone since 2022. Cities like Houston, Dallas, Miami, Tulsa, and Chicago have hosted a LIV Golf tournament in previous years but not in 2026. This year’s remaining LIV Golf schedule brings the tour to several US markets. LIV plays in northern Virginia/DC metro (May 7-10), New Orleans (June 25-28), New Jersey/NYC metro (August 6-9), and Indianapolis (August 20-23). The LIV team competition season finale is in Detroit (August 27-30). Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and his economic development team have invested $5 million of state taxpayer dollars to pay LIV Golf to play its June 25-28 event at the newly renovated Bayou Oaks at City Park (formerly City Park South). An additional $2 million is being spent right now to prepare this venerable public golf course for the upcoming LIV Golf tournament. Pinocchio would chuckle knowing that the Pelican State officials claim that the LIV Golf New Orleans event is going to inject $40 million into the local economy during late June. As a former resident of the New Orleans area, locals know why major hotels are readily available and cheaper during the summertime. It is exceptionally hot and steamy in the Crescent City by late June. The conditions may be miserable for both golf fans and the players. Regardless, the State of Louisiana is now holding its collective breath that LIV Golf won’t shut down operations prior to playing its inaugural New Orleans tournament in two months. Around the world, LIV Golf has been more successful Sold-out LIV Golf tournaments in Australia and South Africa this spring brought LIV’s group of top golf stars to golf-starved countries. Fans openly welcomed the LIV Golf stars and seemed to enjoy the league’s party-like atmosphere. LIV Golf’s 2026 schedule has taken the golfers to Saudi Arabia (of course), Hong Kong, Singapore, and, this week, Mexico. Upcoming overseas events are scheduled for South Korea (May 28-31), Spain (June 4-7), and the United Kingdom (July 23-26). The costs of taking the LIV Golf’s traveling show via jet to tournaments around the globe is staggering. PGA Tour events in the US are usually scheduled within a one-day driving distance. That reduces transportation costs for the television broadcast trucks, crews and players. The clock is ticking for LIV Golf Let’s give LIV Golf a mulligan for its first two years of operation. Since then, the losses have continued to be unsustainable. By any reasonable measure, LIV Golf should cut its losses and end operations by the end of the 2026 season in late August. Perhaps the Saudi Public Investment Fund might forge a partnership with the DP World Tour to bring men’s golf to worldwide locations where LIV Golf has performed well. The top names in LIV Golf have been paid multi-million dollar signing bonuses. They’ll be fine. The remaining talented golfers at LIV Golf will find another home to play professionally soon. Just like basketball’s ABA did for the stalwart NBA, LIV Golf has made a lasting impact upon professional golf and, especially, the PGA Tour. Nonfiction author extraordinaire Luke Epplin joins the pod this week to unpack the intertwined legacies of basketball legends Julius Erving and Moses Malone, as chronicled in his acclaimed new book, "Moses and the Doctor: Two Men, One Championship, and the Birth of Modern Basketball." What unfolds is more than a dual biography — it's a portrait of a transformational era when professional basketball's future hung in the balance. Epplin traces both players back to their early professional years, including their formative time in the upstart American Basketball Association. There, Erving's aerial artistry helped legitimize a bold, improvisational style of play, while Malone's relentless presence in the paint established a new model of dominance — built on effort, positioning, and physical control. Together, those contrasting identities shaped their transition to the NBA: Erving, the ever-visible icon and cultural ambassador; Malone, the quiet, force-of-nature interior anchor. Their partnership culminated in the Philadelphia 76ers' historic 1983 championship run — a moment that represented the perfect blend of style and substance, and altered the trajectory of the modern game. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY BUY THE BOOKS: "Moses and the Doctor: Two Men, One Championship, and the Birth of Modern Basketball": https://amzn.to/4lVpe0Z SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/

In A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Broadcast Booth, Hall of Fame sportscaster Steve Albert chronicles the ups, downs, and unforeseen mishaps that occurred throughout his lifelong journey on the air. From getting nailed in the head by an errant LeBron James pass, to ducking bottles thrown in boxing arena riots, to frightful flights and car trips, Steve discovered that doing play-by-play was a surprisingly hazardous profession. Thankfully, calling games and fights was also pretty entertaining. In a seriously funny collection of humorous and autobiographical essays, Steve recalls encounters with Mickey Mantle pinching, Eddie Murphy boxing, and Meat Loaf serenading. Steve also describes his many unusual experiences, including the morning he smashed through a stuck bathroom door to get to a show on time, saw his broadcast partner Ralph Kiner set his own chair on fire, bolted from a hornet's nest in his booth, and announced the infamous Mike Tyson “Bite Fight.”About Steve AlbertSteve Albert is a sportscaster best known for his decades behind the mic for Showtime Championship Boxing, doing blow-by-blow for some of the biggest fights in boxing history. His boxing calls, including 300-plus world title fights, earned him induction into three boxing halls of fame. During a memorable 45-year career, he also spent almost a quarter of a century doing television play-by-play in the NBA, winning an Emmy Award along the way. Steve called the last game in ABA history when the legendary Julius “Dr J.” Erving led the NY Nets to the championship. All told, Steve announced for thirteen teams in eleven leagues. He also appeared in movies, TV sitcoms/dramas, sports competition game shows, and countless commercials. Steve Albert comes from a family of sportscasters. For more info on the book click HERE
You know all the advice about ignoring your inner critic, avoiding comparisons, and giving yourself credit for your achievements. But you can't shake the sense that the real you is something shameful, something you need to keep hidden at all costs, and that those people who say nice things about you would be horrified if they knew what you were really like. Friend, you've got Real You all wrong. The fact that there are parts of you that you'd hate to share with others doesn't make you wrong, or an impostor, or shameful. According to the sociologist Erving Goffman, you're completely normal. Your Imperfectionist Godmother is here to help you make friends with your secret self - and to see that everyone else has one too.Reference:Goffman, Erving. 1956: The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (University of Edinburgh Social Sciences Research Centre).
We have long lacked a biography of Erving Goffman. Partly this can be explained by Goffman's direction for his papers not to be opened to researchers after his death. This meant those who may wish to write Goffman's biography had a lack of material to draw upon. Dmirti Shalin, author of Erving Manuel Goffman: Biographical Sources of Sociological Imagination (2025, Routledge), has overcome this by developing the Erving Goffman Archives, a collection of correspondence, family histories, syllabi and reminisces which allows for this book to exist as the first true biography of the great scholar. In providing the details of Goffman's life, Shalin has provided new ways of looking at Goffman, showing how factors like his upbringing in a family of Russian Jewish immigrants, his relationship with, and the sad suicide of, his wife, his interactions with colleagues and his everyday interactions shaped his sociology. Along the way we are encouraged to look anew at Goffman's work on topics such as the presentation of self, mental health, gambling and gender. In doing so, we learn much about Goffman not just as a scholar, but as a man. In our conversation we cover the whole of Goffman's life, moving from his youth and onto the significant points in his career and their impact upon his sociology. We also discuss the archive and how it came to be and discuss what Goffman's legacy maybe for the future of democratic politics. Strap in and try to keep up, as we attempt to follow the peripatetic 58-year journey of one of the NBA's most wandering franchises - with New York-area sports beat reporter Rick Laughland ("A History of the Nets: From Teaneck to Brooklyn"). Today's Brooklyn Nets club began its life in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans - a charter member of the American Basketball Association, playing at the Teaneck Armory. A year later, they moved to Long Island (LI Arena, then Island Garden, then Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum) to become the New York Nets, winning two ABA championships (1974, 1976) behind superstar Julius Erving. Absorbed into the NBA in 1976, the team struggled financially and was forced to sell Erving, leading to early-season struggles. In 1977, they relocated to the Garden State as the New Jersey Nets, playing at Rutgers Athletic Center (now Jersey Mike's Arena) before moving to Brendan Byrne (aka Meadowlands) Arena in 1981. After almost becoming the "Swamp Dragons" in 1994, the early 2000s saw breakthrough success with Jason Kidd, Kenyon Martin, and Richard Jefferson - making back-to-back NBA Finals runs in 2002 and 2003. Before a brief move to Newark's Prudential Center (2010–12), the team relocated to Brooklyn's purpose-built Barclays Center, with a complete franchise name, logo and color-scheme rebrand. Initially building around Deron Williams, they later pursued star power with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, followed by Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden in 2019–2021. Still bereft of an elusive NBA title, will the Nets continue to ply their trade in Brooklyn - or will they eventually return to their nomadic ways? + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): " A History of the Nets: From Teaneck to Brooklyn": https://amzn.to/41oxSev FIND AND FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/

Prepare to embark on a transformative journey with me today as I delve into the ancient system of healing known as Ayurveda. In this series, I invite you to join me as I interview individuals who have undergone the rigorous study of Ayurveda at Maharishi International University. Each episode offers a glimpse into the personal and professional journeys of these individuals, exploring how Ayurveda found them and how they've integrated its timeless wisdom into their lives to enhance overall well-being. My guests share insights and anecdotes that offer a glimpse into the profound impact Ayurveda has had on their lives and the lives of their clients. But our exploration doesn't stop there. We also delve into the future of Ayurveda and the creative ways these individuals envision promoting its growth as a practical system of self-care. With its focus on eliminating the root causes of conditions and improving overall health, my guests offer innovative strategies for integrating Ayurveda into modern healthcare systems and society at large.Join me on this enlightening journey as we uncover the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda and its potential to revolutionize modern wellness. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or new to the world of Ayurveda, this series promises to inspire, educate, and empower you on your own path to holistic health and well-being.My guest today is Radhika Erving from San Diego, California. Radhika came to Ayurveda after her experience with the autoimmune condition, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which she cured by following an Ayurvedic protocol. Her interest in Ayurveda was fueled by her godmother who encouraged her to delve more deeply. Initially, she worked as a panchakarma technician at the renowned Surya Spa in Los Angeles, its founder being Martha Soffer [I interviewed Martha in episode #32]. Although Radhika found the mentorship of Martha and the hands on experience she gained at Surya to be invaluable, she wanted to deepen her knowledge of the healing power of Ayurveda. During the pandemic, she enrolled in the Master's program in Maharishi Ayurveda & Integrative Medicine at Maharishi International University (MIU). While at MIU, she delved into every aspect of Ayurveda, but was struck by the profundity of the program's emphasis on the role of consciousness and particularly, the practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) on health and well-being. Radhika continues to be connected with MIU as a teacher's assistant in the MS Maharishi Ayurveda program. She also consults with clients privately and offers a variety of services through her business: Ayurveda Ma. Erving earned numerous accolades, including 11 NBA All-Star selections and two NBA All-Star Game MVP awards in 1977 and 1983. Most governments around the world – whether democracies or autocracies – face at least some pressure to respond to citizen concerns on some social problems. But the issues that capture public attention — the ones on which states have incentives to be responsive – aren't always the issues on which bureaucracies, agents of the state, have the ability to solve problems. What do these public agencies do when citizens' demands don't line up with either the supply of state capacity or the incentives of the central state? Our guest, Dr. Iza Ding, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University, examines one way in which bureaucrats try to square this circle. In her recent book The Performative State: Public Scrutiny and Environmental Governance in China, Iza argues that state actors who need to respond but lack substantive capacity can instead choose to perform governance for public audiences. Iza explores the puzzling case of China's Environmental Protection Bureau or the EPB, a bureaucratic agency set up to regulate polluting companies. This issue of polluted air became a national crisis during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics when athletes were struggling to breathe let alone compete. Since then, Chinese citizens have been directing their pollution-related complaints to the EPB, which Iza found, has been given little power by the state to impose fines or shut down polluting factories. But that doesn't mean the civil servants working in this agency do nothing. Instead, Iza documents how and why they routinely deploy symbols, language, and theatrical gestures of good governance to give the appearance of dynamic action – all while leaving many environmental problems utterly unaddressed. We talk with Iza about how she uncovered these performative dynamics through months of ethnographic research in which she was embedded within a Chinese environmental protection agency. She also tells us about how she tested her claims using original media and public opinion data. Finally, we talk about how her findings about performative governance in the environmental space translates to China's COVID-19 response.Works cited in this episode:Beraja, Martin, et al. Top 3 Value Bombs 1. You have to have something that cuts through. It could be an artist's voice, their tone, the melodies, the lyric. But ultimately, when you find that combination of all of these and then someone has a very unique personality and persona, those are the makings of a real superstar. 2. There's no expiration date on great. 3, Put the work in. If you put in 3 times more time and hard work, there would be so much gap between the players and it would be so hard for them to catch up. You don't always see the results straight away. Be willing to work overtime. You can't cheat the work.
