In a wild turn of events, the Austin Gilgronis have been disqualified from the 2022 MLR playoffs! Stu and Derek discuss the situation and how it has been handled by MLR. Despite the chaos, there were still games to be played and the boys breakdown the Arrows 50-35 loss to Old Glory DC. To end the show on a hight note, Canada got off to a dominant start at the Pacific Fours, with a massive 36-5 win over the USA. As a partner with Generation Red Road, it also provides referrals to talking circles, a free resource designed to improve emotional health. As it grows, the organization is looking to expand into additional areas such as strength and conditioning, yoga, meditation, and jujitsu. The ultimate vision is to provide an accessible, comprehensive approach to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health that will provide members with the tools they need to build a stronger, healthier community. On the path to the Playoffs - Will they take the Championship 2 years in a row? This week's Pacey Performance Podcast guest is Simon Thomas. Simon spent five seasons as the Head of Physical Performance for the Crusaders in Super Rugby, and has now moved on to Major League Rugby side Austin Gilgronis in the United States. Following four titles in New Zealand with Crusaders, Simon decided to take on a new challenge in Texas, joining up with head coach Sam Harris whom he had previously worked with at Honda Heat in Japan. Simon is here to talk about the growth of Major League Rugby, the cultural differences between the sport in traditional rugby nations and the USA, and how there are 300 million rugby fans who just don't know it yet. In addition to life in Texas at a fledgling side, Simon also discusses how to set up a successful preseason training camp, including the values to establish, the key objectives, and reflection on the group and their achievements the previous year. One of these training camps proved controversial as the team trained with the US Navy SEALs – as observers on social media waded in with opinions on whether that style of training was appropriate. However, Simon here explains the background behind it all, including the planning and preparation that led to it happening. Today I'm joined by a South African professional rugby player, Sebastian De Chaves, who is currently plying his trade in the USA with Austin Gilgronis and has represented a number of Premiership Rugby clubs.  We discuss mental toughness in elite professional rugby, the use of sport psychology, typical challenges that rugby players and coaches face and common psychological demands of the sport. Key Learning Points: Mental toughness is being able on an individual level, to get your job done and perform to the best of your ability when things aren't going well. Mentally tough players execute under massive amounts of pressure. Focusing on what you can control is essential. Don't let your emotions in the game take over. Always look to learn from top performers. Maintaining a balance off the pitch is important for optimal performance and well-being. Heading into Round 14, Dan and Pete sit down to break down how week 13 of Major League Rugby continues to shape the ever tightening playoff picture in the East. The West, even with the Giltinis on a Bye seems to have a mostly cleared up with the Warriors and the Gilgronis looking to secure the last remaining spot. Yet San Diego even in a loss to Utah will still be pushing to return to the playoffs for the third time. Dom Akina, is from Hawai'i but grew up while being raised in Oregon by his grandmother. While a stand out Football Player at Division II Western Oregon he found Rugby. His exposure and time knowing the game of Rugby has been limited, he has made a dramatic impact for the Austin Gilgronis in his two seasons with the club. The Major League Rugby Eastern Conference remains the most competitive race in MLR with only ten points separating last place Old Glory and first place Rugby ATL. The East continues to show it is the dominant conference with Eastern teams traveling and winning against their Western conference opponents. LA Continues to ride high in the Western Conference, but the Austin Gilgronis certainly didn't make it easy in their mid-week match. Jason Robertson joins the show for his second player of the week appearance in his two seasons in Major League Rugby. Early on in the season he suffered a thumb injury which sidelined him for three weeks. He discusses the difficulty of the injury and how he's come into form over the past two weeks. Lance Williams and Mason Pedersen sit down to talk with Dan about their careers both entering their fourth seasons in Major League Rugby. Lance played football at Hawaii and he gives us an inside look on his transition to playing rugby and his recovery following an injury in season 3's pre-season. Dan and Pete sit down with Will Magie to catch up on where things have moved since the season's cancellation, the changes that have been made, and how effective they've been. Jeff Hassler, for some he's an enigma as a player, one that saw the highest of highs during his tenure at Ospreys in Wales. This episode, we welcome Steve Menzies to the shed and look back on a phenomenal career spanning two decades and 533 games of professional rugby league.  A Manly junior and cult hero at the club, the man affectionately known as 'Beaver' played in 5 Grand Finals and finished as the game's most prolific try scoring forward.
