In this episode, Erica dives into the latest research exploring how menopause affects physical performance in women—highlighting changes in power and strength. These findings are reshaping how we approach exercise and rehab in midlife women. Next, she shares an update on her dissertation, which compares premenopausal and postmenopausal women on key physical performance metrics. Erica discusses early patterns emerging from the data, including potential implications for exercise training and rehab prescription. She wraps up with a clinical case involving a woman in menopause experiencing persistent neck and shoulder pain, along with difficulty breathing. She breaks down the history along with a few clinical pearls outlining how past injuries have and continue to contribute to this woman's issues. Erica also breaks down her exercise program, discussing the do's and don'ts of exercise progression.   Hormonal changes can contribute to musculoskeletal tension and diaphragmatic dysfunction- we know this. But do we really educate our patients on this? Many do not. Whether you're a clinician, researcher, or someone navigating midlife changes, this episode offers insight, evidence, and strategies for supporting well-being during menopause.   Related links: Tough To Treat Website Erica' Website Susan's Website

I explain why overheating can hinder performance and endurance and how techniques like palmar cooling can help extend physical effort by aiding temperature regulation. I also highlight how specific body areas, such as the palms and face, are key targets for regulating temperature, allowing heat to dissipate efficiently. Lastly, I discuss how temperature can support training recovery while cautioning that extreme cold, such as ice baths immediately after training, can block adaptations. Perhaps it's simply because music is always on when we're in public places (think a restaurant or the mall), or perhaps there is a bit more to it in context of physical performance.    Join our Success coaches as they discuss how music may or may not enhance our abilities in the gym!

It's one thing to be born with a gift. It's another thing entirely to use it.Kenny Bednarek could've just been a kid from Wisconsin that ran fast, but this kid had a dream. And as we know, it's the dreamers that make history.Ensuring his name became legend, Bednarek captured the world's attention when he first claimed silver in the 200m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Following that monumental achievement, 2021 seemed to be a victory lap for Kenny.Claiming four Diamond League wins in Lausanne, Zurich,Doha, and Gateshead; and another in the World Continental in Ostrava, Kenny was awarded “Most Consistent Track and Field Athlete,” Diamond League Champion, and made history as the first sprinter to ever run sub 20 in 10 wind-legal races in a single season.Although he's definitely encountered his share of difficulties,Kenny takes even hindrances in stride. Demonstrating his tenacity in 2022, he not only claimed silver in the World Championships 200m - just seven months after breaking a toe– but also acquired two Diamond League wins in Rabat andRome. In 2023, shortly after suffering a grade two hamstring strain and grade three fascia tear, he made the USA team and finished 5th at the World Championships 200m, followed by his complete domination in Brussels, where he earned the Diamond League title. With his injuries a thing of the past, Bednarek has shown us that a healthy Kenny is a dangerous Kenny. With four personal bests and two coveted titles to add to his collection, personal bests and two coveted titles to add to his collection, this is undoubtedly the best season of his career. We caught a glimpse of what Kenny had in store when he started the year with a 100m win in the World Continental Tour in Kenya; followed by a personal best of 19.67 and a tremendous win at the Doha Diamond League. Victorious yet again in the Prefontaine Diamond League, he went on to achieve two more personal bests during the Olympic trials-clocking 9.87 in the 100m and 19.59 in the 200m. This was the first time Bednarek made all three teams (100m, 200m,and 4x100m) at the Olympic trials; and with the distinction of being a two-time Olympian, Kenny made certain he left the 2024 Paris Olympics decorated with silver for a second time in the men's 200m.While it didn't seem possible to top his already exceptional year of achievements, consistent with his character, Bednarek went on to attain his fourth personal best at the Zurich Diamond League with an incredible 19.57 in the 200m. And finally, to conclude a most magnificent season, Bednarek bolted to glory with a spectacular win at the Diamond League meet in Brussels and the distinction of being crowned the Diamond League Champion. In any event, it has been truly remarkable to witness the rise and reign of Kung Fu Kenny. He's transformed from underdog to 2x Olympic silver medalist, 10x Diamond League winner, World Championship Silver Medalist, 2x Diamond League Champion, World #2 in the men's 200m,and the silent warrior that's here and coming for it all.Click here to follow Kenny on Instagram!Support the show

Dr. Max McKenzie Max is a S&C Coach with the QAS Swimming Hub on the Sunshine Coast. Max has worked with elite swimmers for almost a decade across three Olympic/Paralympic cycles. Working within a multidiscipline performance support team servicing several swimming programs and coaches has shaped Max's philosophy on the physical preparation of swimmers. In 2024, Max completed his PhD which investigated the impact of land-based warmup strategies on subsequent swimming physiology and performance. Dr. Mark McKean Mark started his career as a Physical Education teacher and still uses these teaching and coaching skills he learnt in many of his current coaching roles. Mark is a Master S&C Coach and completed his PhD in Sport and Exercise Science at UniSC. Mark has 30+ years of experience in various sports, including Sprint Kayak, Tennis, Swimming and Netball. Mark is a Senior S&C with the QAS Swimming Hub on the Sunshine Coast and is Head of Physical Performance in High-Performance Sport at UniSC. Mark has worked with UniSC's High-Performance swimming program since its inception in 2011 and has more than two decades of experience working with Olympic and Paralympic swimmers. QUOTES “One of our biggest concerns is swimmers, and it's like in any sport, their sport age is very different to their S&C training age, so you get swimmers that have been in the pool for five, 10 years, but when they come into our environment, they've got less than one year of good experience” “If you ever spend any time around swim coaches, you'll hear the word connection probably on a daily basis and my interpretation of what swimming coaches are talking about is how efficiently are they sequencing together movements of their joints through water.” “It is very common to hear swim coaches and swimming athletes talk about “what can you pull up?” but one of the things we are interested in is an athlete's ability to pull their own body weight up as fast as they can for as many repetitions without a certain drop of velocity” “So within about six weeks of major competitions, we're going through a set testing battery, which includes bench press velocity and bench press maximal strength, pull up maximal strength, pull up velocity and counter movement jump and squat jump performance” “I've always believed one of the strength and conditioning coach's biggest weaknesses is their general anatomical knowledge” SHOWNOTES 1) The back stories of Max and Mark including Max's PhD research on swim performance and land-based interventions in the warm up 2) The basics of athletic movements for swimming like streamlining and rotation control, and the importance of connection 3) The adaptation of common traditional exercises like the pull up and reverse hyperextension to be more swim specific 4) The importance of monitoring vertical pulling speed and drops in speed in swimming 5) Swimming strength and power profiling before major competition 6) Strength ratios between upper body exercises and their influence on programming 7) A look into the day-to-day process and weekly periodization at UniSC swimming program 8) The power of the mind and influence of pre-competition lifting on swimming performance 9) The importance of knowing anatomy as a strength and conditioning coach PEOPLE MENTIONED Scott Pollock Dan Howells Dr Mark Burnley Adam Peaty

I compare that to doing plant medicine, which is a lot of a harsher way to do it. The emotional release and purging are related to the hardware of the body, whereas the gold is releasing and updating the software of the subconscious part of the brain." - Brad McDonnell You Don't Need All The Answers "Liberation doesn't mean you know all the answers. It means that you surrender into the flow state, understanding that we are eternal and infinite, and just being grateful for what we have at the moment. The most peaceful experience is to realize there aren't answers and we don't need answers. In this episode, I discuss our body's most vital and essential nutrient—water. I explain the structure of water and how it is used by the cells and tissues of our body, how much water we each need to drink and when in order to optimize our mental focus and physical performance; and I include how exercise, humidity, heat, and caffeine affect our hydration needs. I explain how temperature and pH influence water's physical properties and if there is any scientific basis for drinking so-called “pH water” or “alkalized water” to improve health. I explain how to test your tap water for contaminants (e.g., endocrine disruptors) and the documented problems with fluoride in drinking water. I provide options for filtering drinking water and describe different water types (e.g., reverse osmosis, hydrogen-enriched, electrolyzed reduced, deuterium depleted, etc.). Since the human body is mostly water (55-80% depending on one's age) and water has essential roles in health, disease and cellular function, everyone ought to benefit from understanding how best to clean our tap water, hydrate effectively and in some cases, adjust the type of water we drink to allow our brain and body to function optimally in regard to health and performance.
