Er heisst «How much can a heart break». Dazu und zu ihren Zukunftsplänen gibt Sänger Noah Veraguth in der Sendung Auskunft.
In this week's episode Elizabeth and Matt Watson discuss ideology in his field of social work. A recently published survey study confirmed that a trend toward liberalism in higher education faculty is even stronger in social work and the researchers expressed less concern about this than we'd hoped. We consider what the findings and the tone of the article mean for the field. We also discuss the social work code of ethics and potential conflicts created by the preponderance of progressive faculty and elaborate on the importance of diversity of thought in both social work education and social work itself. We also reached out to the author and Dr. Stephen Stoeffler joined us for a follow up. We asked Stephen about provisions for protecting religious and political views, and how social work faculty can avoid alienating their less progressive students at a time when the field needs more good candidates. Stephen expressed an openness and commitment to viewpoint diversity in social work classrooms and practice. He also reiterated his beliefs that the field's alignment with the progressive left is appropriate and that social work education should maintain that focus. We all agreed that these are the kind of difficult conversations we need in the fields of social work and social work education. Podcast notes Stoeffler, S., Young, B. & Hassler, M. (2023).

Opening Song: All Your Works are Good (https://open.spotify.com/track/4ruszcUTkL45zpEACGBToj?si=e57b36673c86421c) by Jill Gullahorn, Julie Lee, and Sandra McCracken Lyrics: The moon it marks the seasons The sun knows when to go down The ocean holds its creatures The river knows its bounds The birds the trees the cattle And all things great and small We find our place in creation Your hand sustains us all All Your works are good All Your works are good From everlasting to everlasting All Your works are good He makes the clouds His chariot He wraps Himself in light He stretches out the heavens Like a tent across the sky He knows our every burden When darkness veils our eyes He comes with spring returning Bringing death to life As we labor until evening There's a message on the wind Be still and know your maker Be satisfied in Him Passage: My soul, bless the Lord! Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with majesty and splendor. 2 He wraps himself in light as if it were a robe, spreading out the sky like a canopy, 3 laying the beams of his palace on the waters above, making the clouds his chariot, walking on the wings of the wind, 4 and making the winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants. 5 He established the earth on its foundations; it will never be shaken. 6 You covered it with the deep as if it were a garment; the water stood above the mountains. 7 At your rebuke the water fled; at the sound of your thunder they hurried away — 8 mountains rose and valleys sank — to the place you established for them. 9 You set a boundary they cannot cross; they will never cover the earth again. -- Psalms 104:1-9 (CSB) 24 How countless are your works, Lord! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. -- Psalms 104:24 (CSB) 35 May sinners vanish from the earth and wicked people be no more. My soul, bless the Lord! Hallelujah! -- Psalms 104:35 (CSB) Musical Reflection: O Sacred Head Now Wounded by Hans Leo Hassler Reflection Notes: This tune by Hassler is most famously set with the text “O Sacred, Now Wounded;” the most common harmonization was popularized by J.S. Bach in his St. Matthew Passion. It conveys the pathos of Christ's death with deep sincerity. Prayer:
Opening Song: Psalm 22 (https://open.spotify.com/track/1KP4dy5hNaKe4aWfvidbFm?si=21e404e938be428a)by Greg LaFollette Lyrics: My God my God why have you forsaken me My God my God why have you forsaken me You promised me that you would never leave I'm crying out but you are not listening I'm crying out but you withhold your peace from me You promised me that you would never leave He trusts in the Lord all the mockers say So let God deliver him since he loves him My God my God why have you forsaken me My God my God why have you forsaken me You promised me that you would never leave You promised me that you would never leave You promised me that you would never leave Let God deliver him since he loves him Passage: 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? 2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. 3 Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 4 In you our fathers trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. 5 To you they cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not put to shame. 6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8 “He trusts in the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!” 9 Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother's breasts. 10 On you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother's womb you have been my God. 11 Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help. (Psalm 22:1-11 ESV) Musical Reflection: O Sacred Head Now Wounded by Hans Leo Hassler Reflection Notes: This tune by Hassler is most famously set with the text “O Sacred, Now Wounded;” the most common harmonization was popularized by J.S. Bach in his St. Matthew Passion. It conveys the pathos of Christ's death with deep sincerity. Prayer: I have no other helper than you, no other father, no other redeemer, no other support. I pray to you. Only you can help me. My present misery is too great. Despair grips me, and I am at my wits' end. I am sunk in the depths, and I cannot pull myself up or out. If it is your will, help me out of this misery. Let me know that you are stronger than all misery and all enemies. O Lord, if I come through this, please let the experience contribute to my and my brothers' blessing. You will not forsake me; this I know. Amen. (A prayer from a young Ghanian Christian. Donald Lee Hassler, a Texas parolee, has been charged with capital murder in the mysterious disappearance and suspected murder of 57-year-old Sheryl Siddall. Siddall, a grandmother residing in Horseshoe Lake Estates in north Liberty County, northeast of Houston, vanished without a trace on September 18, leaving authorities and her distraught family searching for answers. The ordeal began when Siddall's concerned niece reported her missing, triggering a welfare check at her home. What deputies discovered inside Siddall's residence only deepened the sense of dread—a trail of blood on the kitchen floor and cabinets. Despite a thorough search in the community and the lake behind her house, Siddall has not been found. When deputies arrived at Siddall's home, Hassler, an acquaintance of Siddall's answered the door. His assertion that Siddall had left to visit her sister in Oklahoma and that he was in the process of buying her house raised immediate suspicions. Authorities, however, found Siddall's belongings—wallet, purse, ID, and vehicle—inside her home, contradicting Hassler's claims. Complicating matters, Siddall's phone, which last pinged a cellphone tower near her residence on September 11 before going silent, has yet to be located. Hassler, who was initially booked into the Liberty County Jail on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm—a parole violation—remained at the center of the investigation. As the case unfolded, investigators discovered eight firearms in a box trailer belonging to Hassler and in his pickup truck. The additional charges intensified the severity of the situation, marking Hassler as the prime suspect in Siddall's disappearance. Following his arrest, Hassler's lack of cooperation with authorities became apparent. Deputies stated that he pleaded the Fifth Amendment against self- incrimination, heightening suspicions surrounding his involvement. Hassler was subsequently held without bond, a decision made as the search for Siddall continued. Unfortunately, a date for the resumption of the search was not immediately available. Liberty County Sheriff's Capt. David Meyers expressed determination, stating, “We still want to find Siddall, and we will not give up until we do! We want to help bring some sort of closure to her family." The family, grappling with uncertainty, has already initiated discussions about a memorial service for Siddall. In a month marked by unsettling developments, Siddall's family disclosed that she has no sister in Oklahoma, contradicting Hassler's claim. Adding another layer of complexity, Siddall's family filed a petition against Hassler, alleging that he forged Siddall's signature on a deed on June 30, granting himself general power of attorney. In a testament to the challenges faced by Siddall's family, a fundraising page has been established to alleviate the financial burden associated with the civil case and Siddall's funeral. The fundraiser aims to support legal expenses, cover funeral costs, and provide assistance to Siddall's children, who have taken time off work to search for their missing mother. Local pastor, Joelle Hassler, brings a fresh perspective about what it means "to be in the world but not of the world." Chapel Date: 10/11/23
In today's episode, we have a special guest joining me as co-host - my husband, Dr. Gregg Hassler, Jr. He's not only a dentist but also a former school board president and, as he always likes to say, my biggest advocate. We are thrilled to celebrate The Brighter Side of Education's one-year anniversary! A big thank you goes out to all our listeners and guests who have made this first year truly incredible. When we started this journey, we didn't quite know what to expect, but we've learned and grown tremendously along the way and couldn't be prouder of the results. One of the significant challenges in education today is the struggle many students face with reading and writing. To address this, I took it upon myself to create a workbook-style writing journal based on the successful classroom writing structure I used in my own teaching experience. It's called "My Writing Journal: 15 Weeks of Writing for Primary Grades," and I'm thrilled with how it turned out! This journal is designed to seamlessly complement any Language Arts program for students in first through third grades and is already being used in several classrooms. You can find it on Amazon!Over the past year, I've had the privilege to attend and present at three national education conferences, which we'll delve into in this episode. Many of the speakers I met at these conferences have graced our podcast, sharing their valuable knowledge and insights. During these conferences, several emerging trends in education became apparent, and we'll discuss the top nine of them: AI, microlearning/nano-learning, online learning (including blended, hyflex, and extended reality), Masterclass/Maestro platforms, independent startups offering homeschool options, vocational and technical courses in high schools, a renewed focus on soft skills, alternative assessments, and how various states are tackling teacher shortages. Our call to action for you, our listeners, is simple: keep learning, stay involved, and support education in your community. Together, we can make a positive impact on the future of education. Thank you for being part of our journey! The essence of this coaching call is about our protective patterns manifesting as nervous habits. Today's caller, Jessica, picks her skin. She would like guidance about understanding her nervous habit and how to stop it. Christine sheds some light on why these kinds of habits exist and why wanting to get rid of them or making them wrong is exactly what not to do. [For show notes, go here: Christinehassler.com/episode417]. The origin of our nervous habits is a tender, scared, powerless part of us. When pain is inflicted upon us, either emotional, physical, sexual, or mental pain, and everything feels out of control, our ability to cause ourselves pain and being the one controlling the pain gives us a sense of power. When we are in overwhelm of any kind, we can use our nervous habit as a soothing strategy. It sort of shuts down everything else and brings our focus to the habit so we don't have to feel other things. We use it as a sense of control, as well as a soothing strategy. It is a useful strategy our subconscious creates to help us manage our pain. Remember, our inner protector is protecting a very scared child who felt powerless and had pain inflicted on them. When we feel the urge to apply our protective strategies, AKA act out our nervous habits, the last thing we want to do is try to force them to go away because they will just try to do their job even stronger. We need to make a conscious effort to be aware of our habits and not judge or shame ourselves for them. My upcoming Signature Retreat is almost upon us. To get a unique sneak peek of what to expect during the retreat, I am having a Grad Panel on September 6th. To attend or for a recording of the panel go to Christine.Hassler.com/panel or assist@christinehassler.com. For a nurturing self-care experience, join like-minded women from October 13‒15 in San Diego, CA. And, to apply for a partial scholarship go to ChristineHassler.com/scholarship. The course is almost full. Consider/Ask Yourself: Do you have any nervous habits like skin-picking, nail-biting, pulling apart split ends, etc.? Did you have pain inflicted upon you as a child and you felt you had no control? Do you notice nervous habits emerge even in situations where you should feel safe? Do you try to stop a habit by shaming yourself or making it wrong and you aren't getting anywhere? Jessica's Question: Jessica asks for guidance on how to break her nervous habit of skin-picking. Jessica's Key Insights and Ahas: Her skin picking interferes with her being fully present. She feels anxious when she picks her skin. She is a high achiever. She finds it difficult to break her habit. Her habit soothes her. Pain was inflicted upon her which left her feeling powerless. She is in the early stages of pregnancy. She wished she had an emotionally present, nurturing mother. Her grandfather caused her distress as a child. She feels she has to put everyone else first. How to Get Over It and On With It: Let go of the shame and judgment she has about her nervous habit. Have compassion for herself. Sign up for the Inner Child Workshop. Get herself into the present moment as much as possible. If she has the urge to pick, go ahead and pick but do it consciously. Take care not to go into the martyr-mother role. Takeaways: If you have a nervous habit let go of your shame and judgment around it. Be patient and gentle with yourself and nourish your inner child. In today's episode, I continue with my personal background in education to discuss the research I conducted and how it led me to podcasting. Dr. Gregg Hassler, Jr. DMD joins me as a co-host. He was a school board president, is a dentist, but most importantly, is my husband. He's always said that it's important that my audience gets to know who I am as an educational podcaster and so...this is it!You will hear the story about a trip to Brazil that inspired me to teach families English which led to my master's degree in Online Teaching and Learning. I researched Family Second Language Acquisition and planned on completing my dissertation on it, but the idea was rejected by the university for not being student outcome focused.Frantically searching for another topic, a county school board member asked me the question, "Does virtual school work in second grade for third grade reading proficiency?" That question led me down a rabbit hole that changed my life. I researched the topic, completed my dissertation, applied what I learned from the study to my own second grade classroom. I used this knowledge and experience to write the book, America's Embarrassing Reading Crisis: What we learned from COVID, A guide to help educational leaders, teachers, and parents change the game. The excitement of learning new ideas and how to apply them to help our kids succeed not only in the classroom, but in life is what brought me to this platform. I love enlightening conversations about education! (https://dentallabfoundation.org/) In a time where many are saying the labs are closing or consolidating, here on the podcast we hear about labs owners killing it every week. This episode features a technician that went out to prove to everyone that this industry is still a great profession to find success. Daniel Hassler learned all about dental technology in the Airforce. After his service he traveled to a few states and bettered his skills at a few different labs. Then in October 2022, Daniel opened "Wizards of the Bench" and was a instant success and he's so busy, he's already looking at bring on other technicians. It's a great (and shorter) conversation proving once again that this is a great industry for those wanting a career worth working for. Did you know that not all Zirconia is the same? In this episode, I talk about my path in education and what brought me to podcasting. I took a temporary detour in my regular guest show structure to give you the back story to what brought me to this table. The story is long, twisty, and raw. It's a personal tale of my journey. Here are the beginning cliff notes highlights: pregnant at 18, 11 years to finish my Associate's Degree, 13 years to complete my Bachelor's Degree, 4 kids (1 gifted, 1 average, 2 spectrum)... You'll be happy to know that it has a happy ending:) Because I've learned that no matter what happens to us along the path in life, we are exactly where we are meant to be. Learn from it and help others along the journey.
