Adios, Stupidnames, it's been no pleasure at all. Nah, that's maybe a bit crass given the news that the Austin Gilgronis and LA Giltinis are finally no more, as confirmed by MLR this week. It's huge news for the league, and rugby in the US in general, and we have all the latest on the situation - along with all the other MLR hits: Juan Capiello's retirement, Ma'a Nonu's returnment, and George Killebrew's happy birthdayment... - in this week's American Rugby News, brought to you by ShopMLR.comOnce again we have a full round-up of all the World Cup matches, including the North American Classic contested by the USA Eagles and Canada, England swatting South Africa and the Black Ferns sweeping Scotland. Jon also gets a bit ranty about referees and the NZRU as we preview the Quarter Final stage, which sees the Eagles take on... Canada. Again. This format sucks.A packed Raptor Report breaks the news that Head Coach Paul Emerick has left the American Raptors with immediate effect to explore further career opportunities (whatever that means!), to be replaced by Sarah Chobot in yet another pioneering move from the Colorado outfit. We also review the match with Seattle where the boys fell in with a former team-mate-turned-Seawolf.And finally, Johnny "Mother" Rucker has a little Mother's Advice for the Eagles as they prepare to take on the syrup drinkers for the second time in a week!If you'd like to follow along on our socials you can do! - @allamericanrugbypod on Instagram, @aarugbypod on Twitter or by emailing aarugbypod@outlook.comWe also have our facebook group, where we discuss all things American rugby, making it the place to keep up with the show between shows! Enjoy the episode !

*Executive Producer - Jeremiah Higgins LA Giltinis Adam Ashe is in The Sports Lounge with Big Lou! Adam Ashe was born in Scotland and has been a mainstay of Scottish rugby for much of the past decade. The no. 8 attended Alva Academy and it was with Ayr in the Scottish Premiership where he found his first senior opportunity. His potential was quickly noticed by Glasgow and he was signed as a development player with the Warriors in 2011. He debuted for Glasgow in 2012 and also found international opportunities with the Scotland 7s during the 2011-12 series as a teenager. A year later, he was picked for the Scotland U20s, picked in all the team's Six Nations matches and a further five World Rugby U20s matches. Ashe was recognised as one of Scotland's top prospects when he was awarded the John McPhail Scholarship in 2014 and given the chance to train in New Zealand with Canterbury for 15 weeks. However, midway through that period, he was given the opportunity to join Vern Cotter's Scotland Test side. He debuted against South Africa in that year's June Series, starting at no. 8 and playing the full match. Ashe has won six Test caps overall, most recently against Italy in 2015. Injuries have at times hampered Ashe's progress but he had featured in 34 matches for the Warriors before departing at the end of the interrupted 19-20 Pro14 season. Ashe showed his class for the Giltinis in 2021 with his all-round skills as a powerful runner, linkman and lineout option before a ruptured bicep ended his season early. A frontline asset for 2022 when fit. www.lagiltinis.com Adam Ashe Social: Instagram - @adamashe_ Twitter - @Adam Ashe

Today in The Sports Lounge Big Lou Welcomes Matt Giteau from the Los Angeles Giltinis! Matt Giteau is one of the most-decorated Australian rugby players in history, with a career spanning many countries and almost two decades. The flyhalf has plenty of sporting pedigree in his family. HIs father Ron played professional rugby league, his sister Kristy is a dual code international and wife Bianca is a former top flight netballer. Giteau grew up in Canberra and attended St Edmund's College, a school that also counts George Gregan among its alumni. It was at St Edmund's where he first played rugby seriously Giteau is one of just two players to have made his Wallabies debut before he made his Super Rugby debut. The talented back played his first Test in 2002 against England on that year's Spring Tour. From there he became a regular fixture on the Test stage when he was fully fit, featuring in the first of three Rugby World Cups less than a year later. Giteau started his Super Rugby career with the Brumbies, playing 40 matches over the six seasons he was with the team. He made a cross-country move ahead of the 2007 season, signing with new side the Western Force in Perth. He spent three seasons with the Force before returning to the Brumbies in 2010. It was in 2011 when Giteau faced a career crossroads, left out of the World Cup squad by then Test coach Robbie Deans. With no clarity on his Test future, Giteau signed a deal in France with Toulon and seemingly walked away from any further international opportunities. GIteau starred in the Top 14 competition with Toulon, winning three consecutive Champions Cup titles with the French glamour club. HIs form in France earned him a recall into the Wallabies fold, a move that required the creation of a new international eligibility clause dubbed the ‘Giteau Law'. After playing a part in the Wallabies' run to the Rugby World CUp final, Giteau made a brief appearance in the 2016 Bledisloe Cup series before an injury ultimately forced him into international retirement. After finishing his stint with Toulon, Giteau made the switch to Japan, winning a Top League trophy with Suntory. His time with the Sungoliath finished at the end of the 2020 Japanese season, which was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. Feeling a bit unfulfilled by the ending in Japan, he's excited about writing another in Los Angeles. Giteau had moved back to Canberra with Bianca and their two sons Levi and Kai and also recently welcomed a daughter, Winter. www.lagiltinis.com

Charlie was on the fringes of the Waratahs squads in recent seasons. The front rower showed promise in the Shute Shield for Gordon and stepped up in the National Rugby Championship with Sydney City. Abel made his Super Rugby AU debut for the Rebels against the Reds in 2020, joining brothers Robbie and Jacob in the professional ranks. Abel was a standout for the Giltinis in their run to the title, playing strongly on both sides of the scrum and for more minutes than any other prop in 2021. Joining Big Lou in The Sports Lounge Today - Special Guest: Dave Dennis! Born and raised in Western Sydney, Dave Dennis is one of the most respected figures in NSW rugby history. Dennis was picked for the Australian school's side in 2004, the beginning of a long and decorated representative career. The lock/backrower made his Super Rugby debut for the Waratahs in 2007 and was a mainstay of the team for the better part of a decade beyond that. His form in Super Rugby earned him a Test debut in June 2012, with Dennis featuring against Scotland and going on to play 18 Tests over 18 months. He most recently played for the Wallabies against Wales in Cardiff in 2013. Dennis was appointed Waratahs captain in 2013 but poor fortune struck in the 2014 season with the much-loved NSW figure suffering a season-ending knee injury. That setback meant Dennis had to watch on as the Waratahs collected their first, and only to this point, Super Rugby championship. After 107 games for the Waratahs, Dennis moved to the UK at the end of the 2016 season. The forward found success in England, playing for the Chiefs in the Premiership. Exeter won the competition in his first season with the club and featured heavily in the European and English tournaments during his four seasons with the Premiership powerhouse. Dennis proved an inspiring signing to captain the Giltinis in their debut season. He set standards both as a durable, high-performing forward and as a fine leader of men. Special Guest Billy Meakes - LA Giltinis -Centre, joins Big Lou In The Sports Lounge! Billy Meakes made a huge success of his debut season with the Giltinis and will be a key figure again in 2022. Meakes grew up on Sydney's northern beaches and attended rugby nursery St Joseph's College Hunters Hill. The centre was a part of the 2011 Australia U20s team that finished third at the U20s World Championships. Meakes had to wait for his professional opportunity after stints in Sydney's Shute Shield club competition. Eventually, his chance came abroad. In 2013, Meakes moved to England and began playing with local side Clifton in Bristol City. Later that year, Meakes joined Gloucester, first on an academy contract and then as a fully-fledged squad player. After nearly three seasons with Gloucester, playing under Aussie Laurie Fisher, Meakes was granted a release to return to Australia and play with the Western Force. Meakes' UK experience showed in his Super Rugby return and he quickly made a stamp on the Southern Hemisphere competition. Meakes' form with the Force put him on the Wallabies radar. In 2018, Meakes was among a host of Force players who moved to Melbourne in the wake of the axing of the WA side from Super Rugby. Meakes continued to perform for the Rebels, though some injuries interrupted his 2018 and 2019 seasons. Meakes finished 2020 on a short-term deal with London Irish. Meakes was named MLR's Back of the Year in rousing recognition of his influence as a forceful runner, hard-on-the-ball jackal, strong defender, and key figure in attack. Just how valuable he is was demonstrated when he played a match-winning role as an emergency flanker in a win over the San Diego Legion. Three Screens Are Better Than One - MLR Update (ft. Tommy NoPiks)

Rugby PickEm

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 21, 2022 14:58

Over the past 6 weeks, we've been watching the games and keeping a temperature on the early part of the 2021 MLR season. On Saturday night, Bt and Tommy NoPiks sat down to take in 3 games at once (4 games if you count the 2nd half of the Cali Cup). Much to the chagrin of our dear friend (the 2020 "Blogger of the Year" RPA winner) and seasoned rugby reporter Bryan Ray, the MLR decided to load up Saturday night's slate of games. While Bryan prefers the game schedule to be laid out over the course of an entire weekend, we strongly disagree... What could be better than 3 games on, all at once?! We saw a great opportunity to binge some games and thanks to a generous TV donation by The Rugby Network, we built a triple screen masterpiece. Final Scores and thoughts from a great Saturday night MLR binge (winners in bold): LA Giltinis - 26 SD Legion - 13 Commentary Booth: Gareth Rees (play by play) Mike Tolkin (color) A poorly timed yellow card in the 60th minute killed San Diego's chances to level the score. They just couldn't seem to get the ball over the try line despite many appearances down in LA's 22. Luke White continues his rampage as one of the best scrummaging props in the MLR. Billy Meakes (better known as "Sir William Meakes" in Rugby PickEm circles) was MOTM. Meakes in an absolute GUN! Austin Gilgronis - 17 New England FreeJacks - 25 Commentary Booth: Kit McConico (play by play) Jim ___? (color) Some people disagreed with the call that went against Mason Pederson and cancelled Austin's late try to bring the game close, but the bottom line is that New England scored and defended when they needed to. They walk away with a massive win on the road, and rested some starters too. Zach Bastres scored his first MLR try coming off the bench to help seal the game. NOLA Gold - 17 Rugby New York - 30 Commentary Booth: Ian McNulty (play by play) Geoff Ormsby (color) We we're pulling hard for NOLA to get their 3rd straight win and jump back into contention in the East ... but it wasn't meant to be. New York was in control throughout the majority of the game. Ed Fidow continues to be a master class for the New York backline, running through anything to get his team on the front foot. NOLA has some lengthy tries late in the match, but too little too late for NOLA. They are 0-4 at home to begin the year. Dallas Jackals - 12 Seattle Seawolves - 34 Commentary Booth: Matt McCarthy (play by play) Marc Scterbina (color) An early red card saw Dallas up against it at Choctaw Stadium. The team continues to have moments of play that are magnificent, but a lack of defensive cohesion lead to a litany of Seattle tries that put it out of reach. Dallas will get their first W before the season ends, it's just a matter of which team takes them too lightly. Seattle ends a three game slide and will have to front against the defending champs next weekend. What a fantastic Saturday night of MLR action! Stay tuned for more Rugby PickEm to follow in the coming weeks! PICKEM!

The Canadian had another opportunity in the UK with Glasgow, inking a two-year deal in 2009. It was the next season, 2010-2011, when van der Merwe established himself as a Pro12 regular with the Warriors featuring in 19 matches. van der Merwe played with the Warriors through to 2015 before moving to Welsh side Scarlets, where he played for three seasons. van der Merwe moved to English club Newcastle ahead of the 2017-18 season but he only spent a short time with the Falcons before returning to Glasgow. van der Merwe made his Test debut for Canada in 2006 and featured in their 2007 Rugby World Cup campaign, the first of four of those campaigns, most recently playing in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. At the time of writing, van der Merwe had tallied 61 Tests for Canada.805 - 564 - 1290 He joins the LA Giltinis and took the MLR Championship in 2020. The Wallabies and Springboks continue to have a decorated rivalry with the men in gold taking the latest chocolates over the reigning World Champions.
