This week's guest, audio engineer, producer, teacher (and lead singer of Indianapolis punk band Zero Boys) Paul Mahern, brings us Public Enemy's landmark sophomore record 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back'. We're back after a month away, and we're coming in hot with an expanded format. It's basically just smashing the long and short shows together into one thing, but it sounds more professional if you talk about formatting. That of course doesn't mean that the talk about nonsense garbage has stopped, or really been focused in any way, as this one goes everywhere. We talk about the oft-maligned 1996 Jerry O'Connell vehicle Joe's Apartment, the oeuvre of MTV Films in general, Keebler's discontinued line of pizza chips, the fact that we're apparently the number one source for information on the song "Strut" by Steven Seagal and Lady Saw, the 1986 Nico Mastorakis film The Zero Boys starring Kelli Maroney and Joe Estevez, the song "Destination Understanding" from Island of Death, new music from Novatron, Home Front, and Mats Gustafsson & Joachim Nordwall, the 1991 song "Joyride (I Saw the Film)" by Tribe, and the recent passing of noted director/wonderful maniac William Friedkin. Finally, in our main event, we discuss Sean's pick for this show: the 1982 John Frankenheimer movie The Challenge, a star-studded affair scored by Jerry Goldsmith, written by John Sayles, and starring Toshiro Mifune (and Scott Glenn, but you know... Mifune). Despite being loaded on all fronts with talent, the film flopped due to being absolutely swallowed up by the unreal number of megahits released in the summer of 1982. A true shame because this is a really good movie, and we think this is a really good episode. Enjoy? This week’s episode is another show consisting of material I’ve been a bit obsessed with around the Hudson compound. The first half is primarily new or new-ish material. The tribute to Justine Covault continues with tracks off the brand new Justine and the Unclean album, The Signal Light, along with new tunes by Lydi Loveless, Kate Redgate, Tommy Stinson’s Cowboys in the Campfire, and a great Alice Cooper cover by veteran rockers Zero Boys. The second half of the show is dominated by older records that I’ve recently picked up. Many were originally owned by my buddy Phil who had his semi-annual record sale last weekend. But I also have included a couple of reissues of records that I’ve been trying to acquire for years. The Lyres On Fyre, for example, was the very first truly independant record I’ve ever owned, and I desperately needed a copy to replace the one I lost decades ago. And then there’s Double Nickels On the Dime, the classic double album by Minutemen. Going for big bucks on the used market, SST finally pressed some more copies, and I just could not resist! Of course, there’s also this week’s installment in the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” […]

Zero Boys frontman Paul Mahern drops by Thunderlove Studio to talk with the guys about the band's album Vicious Circle… and Punk Rock. In addition to fronting what is arguably the seminal pop-punk band Zero Boys, Paul Mahern is a Grammy-Nominated producer/engineer and manned the boards behind several platinum albums. He's worked with artists as varied as Afghan Whigs, Iggy Pop, The Fray, and Neil Young and built a very successful working relationship with John Mellencamp. Paul is also a music archivist and a college professor (he teaches a class called The History of Punk) - go figure. :) Check out the links below to his work. When this week's guest, producer/audio engineer Paul Mahern, discovered 'Easter Everywhere' by Texas psychedelic rock band 13th Floor Elevators in the early 80s, he was a punk rock loving musician (Indianapolis Indiana's Zero Boys) looking to expand his musical horizons. He got all that he bargained for and more with this wonderfully dense, expansive and mind-blowing record by a band - led by Tommy Hall and Roky Erickson - that went all-in on their spirituality-through-psychedelics ideals. "You're moving, keep climbing...leave your body behind." Songs featured in this episode: I've Got Levitation (live, 1967) - 13th Floor Elevators; Vicious Circle - Zero Boys; Forecast - Diane Coffee (feat. Deep Sea Diver); Lucifer Sam - Pink Floyd; You're Gonna Miss Me - 13th Floor Elevators; Night of the Vampire - Roky Erickson; Slip Inside This House, Slide Machine - 13th Floor Elevators; Monkey Island - Powell St John; She Lives (In a Time of Her Own) - The Judybats; She Lives (In a Time of Her Own) - 13th Floor Elevators; Let's Spend The Night Together - The Rolling Stones; Nobody To Love - 13th Floor Elevators; D.C.B.A.-25 - Jefferson Airplane; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue - Bob Dylan; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, Earthquake - 13th Floor Elevators; I Look Around - Rain Parade; Things'll Never Be The Same - Spacemen 3; Dust - 13th Floor Elevators; Think (Let Tomorrow Bee) - Sebadoh; I've Got Levitation, I Had To Tell You - 13th Floor Elevators; Sweet Virginia - The Rolling Stones; Universal Soldier - Buffy Sainte Marie; Postures (Leave Your Body Behind) - 13th Floor Elevators; Earthquake - Butthole Surfers

Mosh Madness of the 80s starts here. Jump in the hot tub as we suss out our feelings on which records to include. Zero Boys or Big Boys? How much X-Claim Records can you take? Who's the Insted fan of the crew? Lots to listen (or relisten) to for the next few months.
Paul Mahern was 16 years old when he played guitar and sang for the Zero Boys one of the pioneering punk bands of the early 80s punk scene in my home state of Indiana. He is also an adjunct lecturer in music in general studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His recording clients include John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, and Iggy Pop. He has produced and/or engineered 11 RIAA-certified gold or platinum albums. In 2017, the Indianapolis Star listed Mahern as the fifteenth most influential musician of all time from Indiana. This list of 25 musicians also includes some lightweights like Joshua Bell, Hoagy Carmichael, Michael Jackson, and The Coug. Paul was on the front lines in the American hardcore movement but he has an incredible amount of knowledge on music in general. So, it makes sense that he has developed and teaches a course on the history of punk rock. Open to any students at Indiana University, or those of you at home elsewhere can take it. In this conversation, we talk about Paul's, band the Zero Boys, and doing a punk band in the early days, years recording and engineering in the studio, the history of punk and how he developed his class. What bands get entire lectures? Who is taught in regional classes? Wplaylistshat songs and playlist he assigns students, and how you can take the class from anywhere. This is a must-listen for music fans. https://www.coursicle.com/indiana/courses/MUSZ/208/ •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor log-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

The Wind. On this episode we speak to Director Nico Mastorakis. Nico Mastorakis, a veteran in the independent business of film, founder and owner of Omega Pictures and Omega Entertainment, has been writing and directing movies for over 25 years. This is his 24th feature, with "Blind Date", "The Wind", "Zero Boys" and "In The Cold Of The Night" being some of his critically acclaimed, award-winning thrillers. He has written 32 screen plays and produced 32 features, among which is "The Greek Tycoon", starring Anthony Quinn and Jacqueline Bisset. His movies have been released worldwide by prime distributors and in the U.S. by major studios (Universal, Paramount, United Artists, New Line) and have had both artistic and commercial success in every country. ".com For Murder" is his tribute to Alfred Hitchcock (the resemblance of the title to "Dial M For Murder" alone is an indication) and although dealing with a visually exciting subject, Nico directed this in the classical form of the master's suspense thrillers, casting it with classy actors and maintaining throughout the look of a modern gothic.
