Today we'll go over how to start your seeds and some common questions you may have. Starting seeds doesn't have to be hard or complicated. It may be an initial upfront cost, but will save you money in the long run. Find my favorite seed company and grow lights below. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds is an amazing seed company. They have a great website catalog, but they also have a free catalog you can get in the mail and a paid full catalog I have ordered the free one to share with people at work because the pictures are absolutely beautiful and last year I bought the full catalog and I leave it out on my end table in the living room. rareseeds.com. To use these Amazon links please copy and pasted the https web address and paste it into a new tab on your browser. This was one of the first grow lights that I ordered. I liked that it had a built in timer (6, 9, and 12 hours) so I could automate the lights turning on. I also loved that it was on a clip so in my closets with the white metal shelves that would be a pain to adjust I could clip it on and easily bend the lights to whatever height I needed. This was also a great price point for me just starting with seeds. I do still use these grow lights if I am starting a smaller batch of seeds. I have upgraded to the ones below. EZORKAS Grow Light, 150W Equivalent Tri Head Timing 80 LED 9 Dimmable Levels Plant Grow Lights for Indoor Plants with Red Blue Spectrum, Adjustable Gooseneck, 3 9 12H Timer, 3 Switch Modes https://a.co/d/j8lO53f These grow lights are amazing. More expensive, but more grow light for your dollar. Very easy to use. You do need something to hang them from. I did buy a mechanical timer to automate them turning on and off. Barrina LED Grow Light, 144W( 6 x 24W, 800W Equivalent), 2ft T8, Full Spectrum, High Output, Linkable Design, T8 Integrated Bulb+Fixture, Plant Lights for Indoor Plants, 6-Pack https://a.co/d/0GkejpZ

The Heirloom Expo. For a while now, this event has been held in Santa Rosa in the heart of a big community of artsy, crunchy, healthy people that like good food (and good wine, as all of you who have been to Napa and Santa Rosa can attest). People from around the world come to swap seeds, listen to experts in the field, and find interesting new things to grow. If you go to their Facebook page, you'll find that the mission of the Heirloom Expo is "To educate on the benefits of organic locally grown non GMO foods. As well as preserve OUR food heritage and OUR right to good clean healthy food." Hundreds of vendors, thousands of heirloom varieties, speakers, workshops, art, music, movies, animals and food. Some seeds you're not allowed to keep or put in the ground without permission, believe it or not, so these people are fighting to keep food freedom alive. That is a really scary concept, when you think about it. This event goes for three days, but we only managed to hit one of those on this trip. It's probably a good thing, or what little tread we have left on the bottom of our shoes would be gone. We greatly regret to have missed the talks by RFK Jr. and Dr. Vandana Shiva on Wednesday, but we have hope for next year, when we think they and other fantastic speakers might come back again. There is no shortage of interesting people who show up, that's for sure. So it's not just your grandparents' squash anymore. Oops - yep, it is. And it's found in big piles everywhere in the main exhibit hall, surrounded by pumpkins taller than the average second grader. And we're very glad about that.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/agriCulturePodcast)

Snapdragons, Turnips and the Signs of Spring!Flowers: Snapdragons All about snapdragons. Antirrhinum majus is a short-lived perennial most often grown as annuals in colder climates. It is winter hardy in zones 7 - 10. They come in all colors and sizes and are fun for kids to grow. There is also another snapdragon, called Spanish snapdragon, Antirrhinum hispanicum, which is hardy to zone 6, maybe 5. Sometimes referred to as creeping snapdragons because they aren't tall upright plants.“Antirrhinum used to be treated within the family Scrophulariaceae, but studies of DNA sequences have led to its inclusion in a vastly enlarged family Plantaginaceae within the tribe Antirrhineae.”‘Rocket' is a tall snapdragon, easy to find in most garden centers. Burpee has some snapdragons for hanging baskets: the Candy Showers series. Plus Madame Butterfly which is double-flowering: How to care for snapdragons. Treat mostly as annuals. They will tolerate some light frost. Keep cutting them back to encourage rebloom. Can be planted in a flower border or also do well in containers. They are easy to grow from seed indoors, but probably a little late to do that this year. Needs about 12 weeks before frost-free date. Unless sowing for fall.Kind of an old-fashioned flower (can remember from our childhood so we know it is old) but new varieties such as the trailing type for hanging baskets, are bringing them back in favor a bit. They are fun for kids because you can pinch off the florets and then squeeze them between your thumb and finger to make them look like a dragon open and closing its mouth.Veggies: TurnipsThey are several different varieties of turnips other than the classic Purple Top.Johnny's Selected Seeds has Hakurei, Purple Top and Scarlet Queen.Burpee has Tokyo Cross which is ready in about 35 days and Golden Globe, amongst others.Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds has Nagasaki Akari Kabu. Dee is growing it this year. Turnips prefer soils that are 50ºF or warmer to germinate. (Yes, soil temperature is a thing and if you want to know your soil's temp, buy a Soil Thermometer (affiliate link)).They need up to 70 days for full maturity so don't plant too late, but you can plant all the way until 70 days before your usual frost date. For Carol that would be about mid-August for the last sowing. There are all kinds of recipes online for cooking turnips, which are becoming more hip. Move over Kale! Here come Turnips. Mashed turnips are a substitute for mashed potatoes. Clean, quarter, boil for 35-45 minutes until tender. Add a little butter, a little milk as you mash them to whatever consistency you'd like.Listen to find out about Carol and Dee's Turnip growing contest! Dirt: Phenology maps Keeping track year to year of when flowers bloom, plants leave out, etc. All about phenology.
Dee and Carol talk all about seeds, both vegetable seeds and flower seeds. We encourage everyone to get over any fear of sowing seeds they might have and grab some seeds and start sowing. Also on the podcast, we give a shoutout to several seed companies including, in no particular order, Harris Seeds, Burpee Seeds, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Botanical Interests, Floret, Pinetree Garden Seeds, and Renee's Garden Seeds. Dee also clues us in on an interesting Instagram account to follow: Happy Holistic Homestead who posted a great idea for storing seed packets. In our segment on all the best dirt, we talk about a new book, Mastering the Art of Vegetable Gardening by Matt Mattus (Cool Springs Press, 2019) (affiliate link) and the mushroom catalog, Field and Forest Products. Other than Carol getting a review copy of Matt's book, we have not been paid to endorse any of these companies or products.

Episode 6: Comfort Food with a Twist In this episode, the Dinner Sisters do comfort food this episode with recipes for Broccoli Cheddar Soup from Simply Recipes, Chili Mac from Rachel Ray and Jamie Oliver’s Chicken in Milk. All three recipes are great family recipes with one that could feed a soccer team - or last minute guests- and another that is an all time favorite. Betsy talks about gardening in the Smorgasbord. If you’re thinking fruit in the garden, plant berries! Betsy will explain why berries are a hit and suggest some good plants for little gardeners. This week we cooked... Broccoli Cheddar Soup: Simply Recipes The classic broccoli cheddar soup never fails to disappoint. This recipe is creamy but not heavy. Bigger chunks of broccoli give this soup some additional character. Tips: The recipe calls for blanching the broccoli, then cooking in the milk. We’re considering cutting down on steps (and time) but adding thawed, frozen broccoli instead. An option that we haven’t tested but might work. This soup needs something to make it a complete meal- Betsy served it with risotto and Kate ended up liking it for lunch. Chili Mac: Rachel Ray (via FoodNetwork) Chili Mac is an American classic and favorite for a reason. This recipe is a crowd-pleasing combo of pasta and chili for a filling meal. Tips: If you aren’t feeding a crowd consider halving this recipe. Kate did this very successfully and still had enough for four generous servings. Serving suggestions were to add sliced scallion at the end, which is no doubt delicious. However, we both felt shredded cheese at the end was almost a necessity. Chicken in Milk: Jamie Oliver Braising a whole chicken in milk, lemon and sage results in an amazingly tender, flavorful, dinner-guest worthy meal. Tips: Debate is on about whether to lid the pot or not. We split the difference and started the chicken covered. We uncovered it halfway through. Check out The Kitchn’s take here. Serve this over rice, with potatoes on the side or over a thick slice of toast. This is the ultimate comfort food. From the Smorgäsbȯrd: Thinking about planting some berry bushes in your garden? Use these resources for success: USDA Plant Hardiness Zones : use these codes to determine what plants work best in your area. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds: this online store is a stalwart of the heirloom seeds world. At last check they had 5 varieties of sugar snap peas and hundreds of fascinating plants. Warning- it’s easy to get lost for hours perusing this site. Try these online retailers for berry plants: Willis Orchards, Double A Vineyards, Fedco Co-Op Seeds, or Nourse Farms or better yet, check out your local independent nursery for plants that will do well in your area. Our other sister Mary recommends trying annual berry plants like ground cherry, sunberry or garden huckleberry. Seeds for all three are available through Seed Savers Exchange. Planting heirloom seeds — the kind of seeds you order from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds — seems like a quaint pastime. You picture baby food jars lined on a sunny kitchen windowsill, each one filled with a different kind of seed, or neighbors trading seeds over the backyard fence. The world of heirloom seeds is all that, and a lot more. Seeds carry culture and history. Civilizations live or starve depending on whether they have access to seeds. If the world were to end, rebooting it would begin with planting seeds.Heirloom seeds do something really weird. Plant them and they grow. Harvest the seeds and plant them again. They grow all over again. If you are an urbanist who gets most of their food out of plastic packages, the idea of self-replicating food is something out of science fiction. Here’s something else out of science fiction. Just before the year 2000, there was something called the Y2K Scare. People believed that their personal computers would freeze up and go black. The banking system would collapse as well as the power grid. Planes would crash. Balanced unsteadily upon a binary code of ones and zeroes, the world would stop when all the computers failed. It looked like the end for people, so people started saving seeds in case they needed to grow their own food.Y2K didn’t happen. But the seed habit caught on for some. A new generation of backyard gardeners realized that growing your own food was good. Y2K was when Jere Gette’s business really took off. You can get to know his business from the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Catalogue. The same one that I ordered my seeds from to plant in my tiny garden. He printed his first catalog when he was seventeen. When I discovered the catalog in LA he had already been at it a while. Now, more than two decades later, he offers about 2000 varieties of vegetables and herbs, the largest selection in the U.S.Jere joins the podcast to tell us why seeds matter, why GMO seeds are damaging the integrity of our food supply, and why beet seeds are his favorite. The problem is as we lose more and more of these traditional varieties, it reduces the gene pool for breeders to work with. And that's why it's so important for home gardeners and farmers, everybody, to conserve these old varieties because even if you're developing modern hybrids, you still have to start with some base stock. You still have to have the genes of these old insect-resistant varieties or these old heat-tolerant varieties to develop the modern varieties. - Jere GettleGet show notes and more at futurefood.fm. What is the most important beginning for healthy food? Safe seeds; non-GMO, Heirloom and from a reputable supplier are essential for the health of your body. Food starts from seeds and if you do not have a good start, it just goes down hill from there. Plants are the basis of a healthy diet and they are the most nutrient dense item we can consume. Jeremiah "Jere" Gettle is saving food from extinction. Hyperbole? Yes. But every time a rare heirloom vegetable cedes its patch of dirt to a generic variety, bred for efficiency rather than flavor, that piece of food becomes extinct. When Gettle was 17, he started Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds in his bedroom, which then became a successful store in his hometown in Missouri, and he has recently converted an old bank into a seed bank in Petaluma, California. In this video he defines what heirlooms seeds are, explains why genetically modified crops are bad, and gives some good tips on how to save seeds yourself.
