Lee Schneider and Ever Gonzalez are the founders of FutureX.Studio. https://futurex.studio Futurex.Studio is a media platform for generating dialogue and building a community around science fiction projects that imagine a positive view of the future. Every project we support asks, “What would the future of a just world look like?” Science fiction storytelling is often dystopian. This dystopian view is valuable because it helps us see how not to proceed into the future and shows how we have failed. But storytelling focused on imagining social change must also ask what a just future would look like. FutureX.Studio exists to ask how technology can be our ally, and how future visions may be shaped to help us envision gender and racial equality and social and environmental justice. The rapid technological evolution brings rapid progress in our daily lives. At the same time, it also results in eco-anxiety. Where are we actually going? How much damage are we doing with our digital advancement? Can humans and the entire planet keep up with these changes? Lee Schneider aims to address this feeling of dread in his novel, Surrender. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, he explains how telling a story about a dystopian future can shed light on the double-edge sword of collective progress. Lee talks about using AI bots with extreme cautiousness and why they can never replace actual human jobs. He also delves into how technology could be causing social anxiety issues and tech bro companies turning people into mere fuels for the engine of commerce. Lee Schneider is a PhD candidate studying pain and predictive processing at the University of Notre Dame in Perth, Australia. This conversation was inspired by my earlier chat with Asaf Weisman, in one of the previous podcasts or available to view here https://youtu.be/j_0di-4Vaw4. In this discussion, we talk about Lee's agreements and disagreements with Asaf's perspective, the debate about whether pain is a sensation or a perception, the predictive processing model, and many other topics. The conversation was a lot of fun and we rambled all over the place, so there are some jarring cuts/edits in some places. Many thanks Lee. In Episode 9 of this short-flight audio drama, Mission Control is flying the Lunar Sparrow on autopilot, returning Commander Field to Earth. A mysterious decision has been made, at a high level, to end the mission. Commander Field, as is often the case in situations like this, is the last to know what has happened. But before the fade out, she takes one last act of defiance. It's been rare if not impossible, in our complicated times, to see live theater. As a writer, it can be a long walk to come up with an idea, pursue it in notebooks and pixels, commit to a script, hand it off to an actor, and hear it come to life. Audio drama, as a format, allows that creation, and pretty fast, even in our complicated times. That's why posting this last episode is bittersweet. The adventure is over. I am working on a sequel, or followup, I'm not sure what to call it. Mission Control and Commander Field will return to try to resolve the conflicts between them. There will be other characters who get involved with no clue about what role they play in the drama until it is too late for them. Thank you all for listening and commenting. Your support means a lot to me.- Lee Schneider

Season Three of The Future of Food examined how restaurants can survive during pandemic times. We looked for answers in many ways. Lee Schneider interviewed Sean Lynch, who set up a listing service for restaurants that were doing takeout and deliver. He spoke with Grace Guber about her experiences as a server and with Lex Gopnix-Lewinski about what it was like to own a restaurant in the last year. Creg Fielding, CEO of Fusionware, threw some light on how the supply chain works and how it failed during the pandemic. Brian Wang brought his perspective as a science writer and Atul Sood discussed how ghost kitchens may be the future of some restaurant experiences.

This week’s interview is with Christina Dunbar, who has said, “Our culture is starving for story, for vulnerability, for truth telling, for personal story. Story creates meaning and we have a lack of meaning right now in the world.”Christina Dunbar is a storyteller, director, and producer of women’s stories for stage and film. She is star of the one-woman show, Dirty Me Divine. Christina is the founder of RED, a circle for performing artists, and creator of She Takes The Stage, a one-of-a- kind program that guides women to hone their message through their personal story and share it at a live theater show. Christina has taken artists, authors, lawyers, and coaches through her story workshops, public speaking trainings, and creative retreats, and is passionate about supporting women with a message to take the stage. When you share your story you begin to own the story, it doesn't own you. -- Christina Dunbar Her one-person show has eleven characters in it, so of course we talk about her creative process, the work-outside-the-work that an artist has to do, like being in nature, doing yoga, recharging, and what sort of magic happens when she makes a safe space for women in her workshops. If I come off that stage and I've been sweating, I've been crying, I've been laughing, I've been feeling, and I just really feel used up by life in that performance, that to me is very, very satisfying. This episode of Baby Crazy is a free-range conversation between Lee Schneider and Sam Lamott. It begins with a discussion of art and failure, and soon zeroes in on how fathers are imperfect but vital role models. We ask: How can we be fathers without the labels, without the definitions, without worrying what other people think? As Sam says, What matters to him is that his son will see him thrive, “because at the end of the day I am this young man's first role model. He'll have way cooler or more impressive role models down the road I'm sure, but I'm the first one. I'm his template essentially.” Check out Sam's project Hello Humans.
