Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: How effective are the "Best Charities by Cause" organizations recommended by Charity Navigator?, published by Max Pietsch on February 10, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. After acquiring Impact Matters, Charity Navigator now includes impact as a criteria for the charities they recommend here. Charity Navigator's criteria for recommending these charities is less clear than for instance GiveWell's criteria, so I'm unsure of how effective these organizations truly are. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: What are the best charities to donate to in 2022?, published by Luke Freeman on December 26, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a linkpost for GWWC's latest giving recommendations... and also a reminder to donate or pledge before the end of 2022! When you care about making a difference in the world, it's natural to ask: "Where can my donations do the most good?" The great news is that your donations can have an astonishing impact. But to maximise your impact you need to donate effectively. This is especially important given the best charities are often 10 times better than a typical charity within the same area and hundreds of times better than poorly performing charities. The worst charities can even do harm. That means if you donated $100 to the best charity, you could be doing even more good than someone who donates $1,000 to a typical charity, or $10,000 to a poorly performing one. How to donate effectively The point of charity is to help others. Donating effectively means that you're taking steps to make sure you're helping others the most for every dollar you give.We think the best way to do this is to: Identify a promising cause to support. The most promising causes are generally: Large in scale: they significantly impact many lives Neglected: they still need more funding and support Tractable: there are clear and practical ways of making progress Choose an excellent fund or charity working on the cause. Indicators of worthwhile organisations include: reliance on evidence, cost-effectiveness, transparency, room for more funding, and a strong track record. We generally recommend giving to expert-managed funds over charities, because they can allocate your donation where and when it is needed most. Pick an efficient way to donate. Try getting your donation matched by your employer or set up a recurring donation. In practice, choosing a cause and evaluating funds and charities can take a lot of time and effort, and many donors aren't able to work it into their busy schedules. To help you get started, we've put together a list of trustworthy, cost-effective funds and charities working on some of the most pressing causes. Our effective giving recommendations These recommendations are listed roughly in order of convenience and suitability for most donors. The right giving opportunity for you will depend on your particular values and worldview. Donate to expert-managed funds For most people, we recommend donating through an expert-led fund that is focused on effectiveness. Funds are both convenient and highly effective. They allow donors to pool their money so that they can support outstanding giving opportunities that are evaluated by expert grantmakers and trusted charity evaluators. This approach is similar to using an investment fund instead of trying to pick which individual stocks will be the best investments. The fund distributes your donation among multiple grantees with the goal of maximising your overall impact. Read more about the advantages of funds. Donors from the US, UK, and the Netherlands can make tax-deductible donations to the following funds using the Giving What We Can donation platform. For other countries, you can read our tax deductibility guide by country — but we still think these funds are likely to be your best option, even if they're not tax deductible. Here are our top-rated funds grouped by cause area. Learn more about how we choose which charities and funds to recommend. Top-rated funds improving human wellbeing These funds generally give to organisations taking evidence-based approaches to improve and save lives of people currently alive. Donors who value their donations going to organisations either with a strong track-record or a promising and testable new approach to help people in the current generation can maximise the...

In this episode, Shannon shares her motherhood story. She shares her traumatic entrance into motherhood and describes how she was missing a tribe of mamas that she thought would come afterwards. After Shannon had her second child, she realized that the village of mamas were not coming to find her, so she would have to create it. She wanted to change the way motherhood looked. She talks about the day that everything changed and "Mamas for Mamas'' was born. What originally started out as a small Facebook group has evolved to 62 chapters of "Mamas for Mamas" spread across Canada. Shannon's philosophy is to build longer tables rather than higher fences. She says as far as she can tell, it takes the same amount of wood and effort, however, the outcome is drastically different.Shannon Christensen (born Kimmitt) was born and raised in Kelowna, BC and lives here with her husband of 16 years and her 2 boys. With a BA in Psychology and Masters of counselling psychology specializing in forensics, she has a passion for working with marginalized populations and used this drive to start Mamas for Mamas. This grassroots project has since become a national non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the negative impact of poverty on low-income mothers and their families.Shannon has been recognized as a top 40 under 40 recipient, A Woman to Watch, and was a top 3 finalist for Woman of the Year through The City of Kelowna Civic and Community Awards. Most recently she has co-authored a best selling book about motherhood and has brought home the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada for her work with Mamas for Mamas.Shannonreally likes pickles and making the world a better place.Mamas for Mamas WebsiteFollow Mamas for Mamas on InstagramFollow Mamas for Mamas on FacebookFollow Candace on Instagram
Are you receiving the maximum financial benefit from your charitable donations? Are you giving your hard-earned money to the IRS when you could be giving it to charities you're passionate about? The answer to either question could be burning a hole in your wallet. That's why it's important to familiarize yourself with donor-advised funds (DAFs)! Join me as I give an overview of this generosity-focused investment account to help you manage your wealth while making a difference. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Charitable giving stats you should be aware of [1:19] What is a donor advised fund? [2:31] How do donor advised funds work? [6:45] Making a donor advised fund work for you [9:39] Understanding donor advised funds Typically, donating to charity is a one-to-one interaction where the donor needs to know which charity they are giving to and the exact amount at the time of the gift. While that is certainly one way to be generous, it may not be the best way. Using a donor-advised fund could be a game-changer for your wealth management. Donating to this type of investment account allows you to designate cash or securities for charitable use at a later date while receiving an immediate tax benefit. Here are the top three donor-advised fund providers: Fidelity Charitable Fund Minimum fund donation: $5,000 Minimum charitable contribution: $50 Additional contributions: N/A Charles Schwab Charitable Fund Minimum fund donation: $5,000 Minimum charitable contribution: $50 Additional contributions: $500 Vanguard Charitable Fund Minimum fund donation: $25,000 Minimum charitable contribution: $500 Additional contributions: $5,000 Make your donations work for you The 2021 tax year is a great opportunity to start using a donor-advised fund for your charitable contributions. Take advantage of the ability to deduct 100% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) in cash donations before that percentage drops to 60% in 2022. Another benefit of DAFs is the ability to deduct up to 30% of your AGI from donating publicly traded stock, real estate, limited partnership interests, private C-Corp stock and S-Corp stock, and other privately held assets. When managed correctly, donor-advised funds will offset your tax costs while ensuring that money goes to your favorite 501-C3 charitable causes. It can also be a generosity-building activity for the whole family. Sitting down to decide which causes to donate to can become a yearly tradition that makes the world a better place, even after you're gone. A donor-advised fund may not be the right solution for everyone, but it could help you leave behind a beautiful legacy while taking advantage of tax breaks right now. With Kelly Lawson In honour of this completely whacked year (and because it's the holidays) I thought I'd do something a little different for this week's episode. In a year where everything felt like a lot, I thought I'd pare it down. So, there will be no ads, no hook, no music. Just a simple message from me to you. So get cozy, grab a tea or an eggnog and put your feet up for a change. You deserve it. Hoo boy, do you ever. OK, so this crazy year is almost over, and maybe you can't wait to see 2020 in your rearview mirror. My friend, I can totally relate. I am so ready to move on. And yet… let's not be too hasty. I think that even in stressful times – especially in stressful times – we need to take stock. We need to pause and reflect. And so I want you to take this moment to think about all that you’ve accomplished this year. Now, I'm not talking about epic wins. I'm thinking more about survival skills. And it doesn't need to be about business. Maybe your accomplishment is the times you did something good for yourself, like going for a walk when you felt like you couldn't be trapped in the house another minute. It could be a new piece of software that you mastered as our entire lives moved online. Maybe it's the fact that you kept your business alive during a pandemic. Or that you learned some wonderful new domestic skills, like how to knit or make sourdough or garden. Maybe your biggest accomplishment this year was keeping your family intact through really challenging times. Whatever it is, I want you to hold this accomplishment in your mind for a moment. And if you're struggling to come up with anything, let me help you out because you’re missing the biggest accomplishment of them all: you survived a pandemic. Now, if you're anything like me, your brain probably goes directly to all those things you thought you'd do but didn't. You're seeing your goals list from last January and picturing all the unchecked boxes. I get it, I really do. But this is not productive or even fair to yourself. And so I'm reminding you- as I have to remind myself- that you might not have knocked every item – or even most of the items off of your to-do list. And that is OK. It really is. I want you to give yourself grace and permission to release the unrealized dreams, the unanswered wishes, or the unmet goals. You're here, listening to this. You've tuned into this podcast at least a time or two this year, you managed your life and your bills and your children and you're here to tell the tale and that, my friend is worth celebrating. When I started this podcast back in the spring I knew I wanted the content to be equal parts mindset and action. What I never expected was how deep and impactful the mindset shows would be, when we covered topics like imposter syndrome, scarcity mentality, how to face your biggest fears, how to cope with uncertainty and how to be a good ally. Beyond all the expert advice, the handy tips and tricks, above all else, I know you showed up here because you're working on a dream. That despite everything 2020 has thrown your way you haven't given up. I am proud of you. And I hope you know that you have to keep going. Because, whether you've listened to every episode three times over or just caught the occasional show, you probably know by now my key message is to keep taking imperfect action. Perfect is the enemy of progress. So don’t be afraid to do it wrong. Don’t be afraid of failure. Just make a decision and take an intentional action, no matter how tough things can get. The truth is, even the most successful among us need to show up, and some days it’s gonna feel like squaring a circle, but remember on those days it's just about putting one foot in front of the other. So are there decisions that you are sitting on? Did covid put your life on hold? Does imposter syndrome have you procrastinating? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I want you to close out this year by making a commitment to yourself to keep going. I want you to proceed by promising to make a decision and take an action even when things get tough. This is how you grow. This is how you progress no matter what gets thrown your way. This is how we come out of 2020 on top. Stronger. More confident. More resilient. This is how we salvage goodness from this year that was often, frankly, pretty shitty. I won’t sugar coat that. When March happened and everything went into lockdown, including my business and all my revenues, I was not, ah, taking it in stride. After years of building my business from the ground up, suddenly it felt like I was back at square one. And I gotta tell you, it was really scary. In a few ways. I was worried about finances, of course, but also just wondering if and how I'd ever bounce back, or if my clients would return. Honestly, I went into a pretty big panic spiral. And that scarcity mentality that I had been working so hard to overcome, came barging back in. And you know what happened? I made mistakes, I said yes to things that I would have otherwise said no to. I dropped balls. I lost my focus. I behaved like a human under stress does. Imagine that! But it wasn't all bad. Not at all. Afterall, this podcast was born. I reached you. Our perspectives shifted and we grew together. And in hindsight, there isn't one single thing that I regret about that. And now, as we enter into the holiday season with all this growth and new perspective, I think there's beauty in that. We might not all be physically sitting at the same table this holiday season, but let's use whatever energy we have toward a different kind of holiday, to channel the quote-unquote real meaning of Christmas, to take the opportunity to ground or centre ourselves. As a non-religio, Christmas to me means a time to collectively put away all our differences, our work, our stresses, our judgements for just a day (and a night, let’s not underrate Xmas eve) and “be together.” This year, that togetherness feels more important, but also more challenging than ever. I mean, you know this, it's a reality we are all living. And while being together in the same room isn't possible, I think the feeling of togetherness is. So let's be creative and big-spirited about what that means this year. Let's give ourselves and each other permission to do things differently this year. To find joy in connecting with those you love however you can, safely. I've been jotting down some ideas I have on how to make this holiday feel abundant and fulfilling. I'm happy to share them, and I'd love to hear your plans, too, so be sure to DM me with yours. Ok, so what about doing a virtual holiday dinner or brunch? If you can be together you can still break bread together. Coordinate a time, and put the laptop down on the table and Zoom it up. Heck, leave it on all day if you just want to have that feeling of ‘being together.' Put your father in law in the washroom for 45 minutes for added effect Or is that just my family? Ah, gotta love em. Here's a mindset one: Look for the silver linings. I mean, if nothing else, this dumpster fire year is the perfect opportunity to reinvent the holidays. For me, that means dropping the spending and picking up the connecting. So, If you have the means to do so, consider giving to those who don’t have the basics instead of beefing up what’s under your own tree. Consider donating to your favourite charities. If you have school-aged kids, reach out to their schools to see if there are families in your community in need. Remember, this year was reeeally hard for you, but it was probably much harder for someone else. It's our duty as humans to look after one another. I know you'll agree. I will link some of my favourite charities in the show notes to make this easy for you. But I know you probably already have a plan to give back up your sleeve, and that is why I love you so much. Finally, I'd like to say thank you for being a loyal listener. While looking for highlights from 2020, and I know it might feel like you need to dig deep, don’t forget to add this podcast to your list. If it wasn’t for 2020, I wouldn’t be speaking these words into your earbuds right now and if this is the only good thing that has come of 2020, that's definitely good enough for me right now. So thank you, dear listeners. Wishing every single one of you a wonderful holiday. I can't wait to meet you back here the first Monday of 2021. Tiffany Horsely is a Kansas nurse, mom of three, and she has no shame about sharing that her ex husband molested and raped for more than four years their oldest daughter, Robyn. At age 17, depressed and despondent, Robyn found the courage to tell her friend, and eventually her mom, and the police the truth. Together they went through the horror that sexual assault trials are known to be, the loss of a father, and marriage, and pushed forward through grief and on to healing. What's more, soon after the ordeal, Robyn turned to social media to publicaly share her story, with her mom at her side. By owning her truth, she freed herself — and others — from the shame of secrets. What is special about Robyn and Tiffany is that they are funny. Without diminishing the gravity of the trauma of their history, they have found ways to laugh at themselves and life — snapping a selfie from the back of the patrol car as they were escorted to the police station to file a rape report, Tiffany joking that she does pay alimony to her incarcerated ex — by way of taxes.
