Karl talks to Michael Steiner, Marty Strong and Dr. Jens Hartmann in our NEW series Masters of Disruption, which was the brain child of Marty Strong who is a Board Member of BEST Robotics. Our spotlight shines on Dr. Jens Hartmann who is an award winning executive focusing on change management and culture change.Dr. Jens Hartmann talks about the science of culture, and how the brain has a huge part to play in preparing individuals and organizations for changing the dynamics of the future performances.
In this new series from BEST Robotics, Masters of Disruption, we bring some of the greatest minds from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to hear their take on how students, and the future workforce are working together to drive innovation and learning environments. Karl spoke to Michael Steiner, Marty Strong and Vinay Kunwar and they had an insightful conversation about this subject to start the series off. Vinay, the CEO of India First joined the conversation from his office in India and he talked about the collaboration with his organization and BEST Robotics.
On this segment of Link'd AM, Karl talks with Mike Bright, Ph.D. who is Professor and Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Grove City College in Grove City, PA. Grove City is a small (2500 students), Christian, liberal arts college with a strong commitment to balancing the liberal arts, science and technical degrees. Karl and Dr. Bright talk about the current state of engineering and how the need has changed over the past few years, and what it looks like going into the future. They touch on many things that have been touched upon in his conversations with Michael Steiner, the Executive Director of BEST Robotics, of which Dr. Bright has been involved with for many years and served as President until recently. ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGEA legacy of faithfulness.Faithfulness to our 1876 founding purpose is one of our core values, and it is central to our unique higher education story. Daily, we seek to be faithful to our mission to equip students to pursue their unique callings through an academically excellent and Christ-centered learning and living experience. This dedication through the years of the Grove City College community, including nearly 29,000 alumni, has led us to the pinnacle of nationally recognized liberal arts and sciences colleges. Our road has not been easy, but extraordinary accomplishment rarely is. Faithfulness to our mission led us to and through a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case in the 1980s. Today, faithfulness to our mission creates educational outcomes that employers and graduate schools find highly desirable.
When people say to me "you are so creative" it gives me a sense of pride that someone has seen I have put thought into my idea, action or work. So when I was given the opportunity to have the co-author of the book "Cracking The Creativity Code" - Shlomo Maital, as a guest on my show, I jumped at the opportunity. Shlomo, is Senior Research Fellow at the Samuel Neaman Institute for Advanced Studies, Technion and Professor (Emeritus) at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. All that being said I was honored that he joined me and Michael Steiner, Executive Director of BEST Robotics, Inc. to discuss this topic of creativity. We discussed whether creativity can be taught or are you born with it, and the answers were very interesting.Shlomo and Michael talk about the situation in todays educational systems and some concerning trends they are seeing.I am hoping that when leaders of industry and key executives listen to this conversation they learn to embrace creativity within the workforce, and educators see the potential in students that demonstrate creativity.
Over the past few months, we have been having some disruptive, and thought-provoking conversations with Michael Steiner, Executive Director of BEST Robotics around the training, education and the elements and skills that students and the workforce need today. One part of my last conversation made me stop and think.Michael talked about the importance of communication in today's business World, and I wanted to have a deeper conversation around this subject, so we arrange the recording of this segment.I have been an enterprise sales professional for the majority of my career, and I chose to use the power of communication to help educate my audience about the things I am passionate about in the process of doing this over the past several years I have created many strong partnerships and had several win-win outcomes where we have benefited from this approach. But communication was a key element of this approach. And in today's “instant” reward approach, sometimes communication is diluted and some of the key elements are lost.If you lose key elements in a business communication, it can be the difference between success or failure, a great idea or missed opportunity, and that can cost the individual or the organization millions in revenue. The art of putting together a clear, and concise communication piece is more than having good grammar and punctuation – it is the structure of how you present the information and the data. Many people just jump in and present the idea. But it is essential to put the idea into context, so that the recipient can relate to why you are communicating this.Michael gives some great examples of communication that worked, and enabled the communicator to put their case forward so that the recipient could make an informed decision.About BEST Robotics:Take plywood and a box filled with items such as PVC pipe, screws and other hardware, an irrigation valve cover, piano wire, aluminum paint grid, a bicycle inner tube, a BRAIN (BEST Robotics Advanced Instruction Node programmable platform), and something called a micro-energy chain system and try, within six weeks, to design and build a functioning machine that can perform certain, specific tasks in three minutes. I met with the Executive Director of BEST Robotics, Michael Steiner, and I was extremely impressed with the conversation we had. We spoke about the talent gap, and it aligned with the conversations I had been having over the past few weeks. My conversation sets the scene for a series of conversations with Michael where we talk about the current employment situation, the skills our students need to have, and the missing link that we need to address, or industry sectors and entire countries could be placed in a very bad position.About BEST Robotics:Take plywood and a box filled with items such as PVC pipe, screws and other hardware, an irrigation valve cover, piano wire, aluminum paint grid, a bicycle inner tube, a BRAIN (BEST Robotics Advanced Instruction Node programmable platform), and something called a micro-energy chain system and try, within six weeks, to design and build a functioning machine that can perform certain, specific tasks in three minutes. The volunteer work of this next guest has impacted thousands of lives, including ours. Janne Ackerman is a longtime philanthropist with BEST Robotics, the competition in which we established a team to participate beginning in 2005. In 2008, we met Janne at a Regional Championship and have admired her and her husband Garry since as they have led TX BEST and mentored thousands of students over the years. What is amazing about Janne is that she just keeps giving… having “failed” retirement, she is enjoying the farm life, flying planes, and grandkids. Our listeners will love her energy and the smile that you can hear through the entire interview with this very successful engineer and pilot who has much wisdom to share. She is our first guest from Texas and a STEM Rockstar! Show Notes A current resident of Plano, Texas and long-time Raytheon employee (now retired), Janne Ackerman has had a varied career, including assignments in quality assurance, software and systems engineering, and program management. Other highlights include marrying her high school sweetheart, Garry, getting her pilot’s license, wildlife photography, and collecting aircraft projects for restoration. When she is not busy with work, airplanes, travel, or BEST Robotics, Janne crochets afghans for her family and friends. She also contemplates unusual phenomena, like why all the stray neighborhood cats adopt her or why the cucumbers in her garden stay hidden until they are the size of her left arm. Gary Pascal grew up in a home operated like an engineering firm thanks to his ME father. This nature and nurture led to all four of the family's kids also becoming mechanical engineers. After choosing BEST Robotics to fulfill a graduation requirement for his STEM high school, Gary was well on his way to serving as an engineer for Mars Chocolate right out of college. In spite of the inherent fun-factor of being the project manager for a couple of Fun-Sized Snickers assembly lines, Gary admits that he wasn't very good at this high-stress position. He's since found a great balance between drafting custom furniture designs and leaning into his analytical approach to comedy writing. Notes: Check out Gary's newest comedy project, Murdertown. Here's an explanation of Gary's robotics teacher's bumper sticker (and it was red). Marietta Stories | Crazy cool stories from the community builders of Marietta, Georgia
Ok, could you build a team, website, learn to aerodynamically build a balsa wood race car, find sponsors and compete in a national race? This week on Marietta Stories, I interview Arul Gupta and Poojan Mehta, 15 year old guys who were part of a team that, constructed a car from styrofoam, created a website, found sponsors, and competed nationally through F1 in schools. F1 in Schools is a worldwide competition consisting of several teams of kids aged 11-18. In this highly competitive league, teams of 3-6 develop cars utilizing computer aided design and other related tools. However, the complexity of what we do reaches beyond mere engineering and into business/marketing, graphic design, and possibly most importantly if considering real-world application, team management and cooperation. Then, each of these skill sets developed throughout the team process is put to the test at regional, national, and world level competitions. As a result, F1 in Schools has created a system which effectively develops and enhances students’ learning experience through their interests as well as by teaching necessary real-world situations/applications. Arul is a rising junior at Wheeler High School and has chosen to partake in F1 in Schools to further his knowledge and experience with business communication/management skills. He is the Team Lead which entails a variety of tasks from team time management, to ensuring accuracy/value of all work, to constantly keeping the team organized and on task. He is able to bring to the team a background in a variety of areas through classes such as AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, and an intro to Business/Tech class. Arul also has qualities of leadership and competitiveness which he adds to AeroFlow through his spot as Team Captain on the High School Varsity Tennis Team, as well as through national-level tournament competition. Poojan is a rising junior at Wheeler High School and the Head Engineer on the F1 in Schools AeroFlow Racing team. He strives to accomplish CADing and building an F1 car that can exceed expectations. His decision to take on this role come from the valuable skills and knowledge he has attained in classes such as AP Physics 1 and 2, Engineering Concepts, and Intro to Drafting and Design. Poojan possesses the important characteristics of dedication, time management, and leadership abilities which he has utilized so successfully as a build member on BEST Robotics and the Wheeler Track and Field Team.
