They discuss how New York City's approach to housing migrants has changed over time, what migrants are sharing about their experiences, the organizations overseeing these facilities and how imposing “length of shelter stay” restrictions will create more instability. Abbott is an avid and passionate horse and dog lover and she wanted to keep Don, Tom and Nancy's legacies alive as well. Hunt & Field will continue it's exposure of the National Championships and publish quarterly, highlighting all bird, gun, and hunting dog sports, along with horse field sports. Abbott's vision is to produce a high quality magazine for the sporting south. Hunt & Field's first rebranded issue will publish at the end of February recapping the 124th National Championships. It will highlight the 2023 National Champion, all the dogs contending for the Championship, the owners and handlers. Greg Leatherman, this season's over/Guzzlord joins us again to keep Tanner in check and also tell us what exactly goes on in the Sun/Moon story versus what we've just experienced now that we're in Ultra Sun/Moon's postgame. Well, we would walk 500 miles, and we would walk 500 more just to be the guys who walked 1,000 miles just to beat down Wulfric's door. No, seriously, it was a really long leg. It took hours. We're joined by STEVE SARUMI of IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE fame to chat about his love/hate relationships with Gorebyss, the Kalos region, and the Pokémon franchise (listed here, presumably, in order of most-hated to most-loved). Then we got into the dang chop and ground it out. Look at the title of the episode! No joke, it was a monster leg. We did like two supervillain lairs. We each essentially caught living warheads. A man's girlfriend, who is—notably—a Floette, died in a Pokémon war 3000 years ago and he destroyed all life and has been wandering the world since seeking his lost love. He's nine feet tall, btw. It was a whopper. Notes: Check out It's Super Effective wherever you catch your podcasts, and on Twitter and Twitch @pkmncast!

What goes on behind the scenes to run a full-scale Shakespeare festival? How are the plays selected? How long does it take? How much does it cost? This episode we found out the answers to all these questions with the delightful help of Freewill Shakespeare Festival, the Bicks' very own local Shakespeare show that's been running for just over 30 years! We were so very lucky to be joined this episode by Nikola Tonn, managing director of the festival, and David Horak, the artistic director for Freewill Shakespeare. We grilled them on the numerous steps involved in bringing a production to life, from play selection all the way through to opening night and the tallying of the receipts. We also cover a bit of the COVID blues because they're awfully hard to escape these days. Notes: Check out the Freewill Shakespeare website and maybe consider making a trip to Edmonton to take it in next year if you're at all capable! Macbeth and Much Ado are two of our faves! If you've never been, check out these lovely photos provided to us by the team, showing off the truly stellar grounds that are simply perfect for outdoor theatre!

Director of Third Shift and Pure Flix and Chill: The David A.R. White Story (mentioned on our Unplanned episode) Anthony Banua-Simon and Producer Mike Vass sit down with us in the Socially Isolated Digital Studio to discuss their latest film, Cane Fire, premiering at the 2020 Hot Docs International Film Festival, streaming May 28 - June 24. Cane Fire tells a story about the exploitation of land, people, and stories in Kauaʻi over several generations. Using archival footage, older films whose propaganda is painfully clear, and personal footage shot in Kaua'i interviewing family, workers, and the powerful, Cane Fire weaves together the exploitation of the sugar industry, declining union power, settler colonialism, and the Hollywood machine to "create a kaleidoscopic portrait of the economic and cultural forces that have cast Indigenous and working-class residents as “extras” in their own story." There's also a real estate guy named, I shit you not, *Chad Deal* in this movie. You'll want to stick around for that. Loneliness epidemic. Did you know we're currently experiencing this? A recent Harvard study found that 1 in 4 Americans feel they have no one to confide in. So, if you feel lonely or like you're lacking something, you are (ironically...) not alone.Today's episode can help. Radha Agrawal shares simple tools from her new book, BELONG: Find your people, create your community & live a more connected life. My friend, the Live Inspired community is absolutely a place where you belong. My hope is that today's episode helps you strengthen the community where you live, too. NOTES: Check out these recent articles about the loneliness epidemic: New York Times, Washington Post. Get a copy of Radha's new BELONG book. Meaningful relationships are the key to a healthy, happy life. Isolation is as detrimental to your health as being an alcoholic; twice as detrimental as obesity, according to the same study noted above. Learn more about Radha Agrawal on her site radhaagrawal.com. The cornerstone of belonging is participating. Don't just be a bystander. Begin architecting your community: Ask yourself: Who am I and what do I care about? Write down the qualities you're looking for in a friend. Write down the qualities you do not want your friend to have. Realize you need to have the qualities you're seeking (i.e. less judgmental, listen well). Be gently self-aware of how you're showing up. Begin with "exploratory" phase (try new things, show up at new events, observe). Move into "participatory" phase: Which events would you like to go back to and push yourself to participate, volunteer, strike up real conversation? Stop asking questions like "what do you do." Ask bigger questions: What are you most excited about? What's a moment when you were most afraid? Be patient in the process. It takes 80 hours to call someone a friend. Prioritize this. ALL of our issues ladder down to one thing: NOT belonging. It's exhausting to hang out with people who don't get you. Take the time to find community members who fill up your tank. Sometimes, the more successful you are the more at arms length you are from people. It can be lonely on top. We're often part of a community because we're born into it. Cultivate a sense of belonging; feeling of "I'm home. I'm happy." Want to get started making new friends? Listen to Ep. #87, Mel Robbins' 5-second rule will hold you accountable to getting out of your comfort zone + making new friends. If you like this podcast, you will love Live Inspired IN STUDIO. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Sapiens, by Yuval Harari. And a children’s book by Dallas Clayton, An Awesome Book. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? I wish I was less combative and a better listener instead of beating my own drum. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A video that my partner made of our engagement. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Sacagawea! She helped Lewis and Clark get across harrowing parts of the country while pregnant. I'd ask her what it takes to be such an incredible explorer. 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Choose your friends wisely. You're as good as the 5 closest and the sum of all the friends you keep. Pick your friends and nurture them. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Stop trying to be so cool and relevant. This is your time to discover who you are. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? She helped bring people together, find more connection, feel a sense of belonging and fully express and shine their unicorn light. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe, rate & review wherever you get your podcasts. Shelby Plummer first heard of Slaughterhouse-Five from an internet boyfriend. After being grounded for having an internet boyfriend, she got to actually read the book as an AP English assignment and has been a Vonnegut devotee ever since. She devoured his novels and short stories in a way she had never really engaged with reading. He made a fellow Hoosier feel less alone for thinking it was OK to want everyone to be treated well through life, to read and write about aliens, and to make dirty jokes along the way. Shelby carried those philosophies through an expedient college career and still apples them all the time to her comedy writing and performing. Gary Pascal grew up in a home operated like an engineering firm thanks to his ME father. This nature and nurture led to all four of the family's kids also becoming mechanical engineers. After choosing BEST Robotics to fulfill a graduation requirement for his STEM high school, Gary was well on his way to serving as an engineer for Mars Chocolate right out of college. In spite of the inherent fun-factor of being the project manager for a couple of Fun-Sized Snickers assembly lines, Gary admits that he wasn't very good at this high-stress position. He's since found a great balance between drafting custom furniture designs and leaning into his analytical approach to comedy writing. Notes: Check out Gary's newest comedy project, Murdertown. Chels studied WB shows like Felicity and Gilmore Girls like they were homework, at one point in life staying up until 11 PM to watch a rerun of Gilmore Girls only to watch it again at 3 AM. They also began to mentally catalog the writers and actors from each show, faithfully seeking out trivia from DVD commentaries and social media accounts to feel more like a part of the fictional teen-aged worlds being created. Now, Chels prides themselves on creating worlds professionally as a B2B content specialist and creatively as a host of Sell Me A Pup, a show where comedians review made-up media. There's a lot of talk about how much pickier we tend to be with media now, relishing in representation and prickling at problematic jokes and storylines. There's also mention of Tarzan, Roswell, Buffy, and a few non-WB TV delights like The OC, Grey's Anatomy, and... West Wing? Damani Baker was a little kid when his family got caught up in the U.S. invasion of Grenada. That's a crazy story: Ronald Reagan invading a tiny island nation for flimsy reasons. Eli Horowitz is more than a writer who distributes his stories in non-traditional packages.
