Check out the great dining options nearby...WVU's Robotics Team places No. 1 at an international event--Let's go, Mountaineers!...and, speaking of robots, troops undergo high-tech field training in Almost Heaven…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV STATE PARKS – There's plenty to do at West Virginia state parks and forests, from hiking, biking and fishing to swimming, horseback riding and more. But what to do after you've worked up a big appetite? Satisfy your rumbling tummy with a delicious meal from a local eatery! If you're staying at a lodge park, you can always enjoy a hearty meal served at the park restaurant. (Check the calendar for upcoming special Farm-to-Table Dinners at the lodge parks.) In the meantime, here are a few other options you'll want to check out. Rent a historic CCC cabin at Babcock State Park and rest assured your dining options will be plentiful in the area. Take a drive over to the lodge at Hawks Nest State Park where you can dine while enjoying a stunning view of the New River Gorge. As you head into the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, you'll find lots of great dining options in the area.  Read more: https://wvstateparks.com/foodie-travel-guide-to-west-virginia-state-parks/   #2 – From WVU TODAY – It's official: The West Virginia University robotics team is the best in the world. Team Mountaineers topped dozens of other teams from 10 countries in a competition to design and build the next generation of Mars rovers during the 2023 University Rover Challenge held May 31-June 3 at the Mars Desert Research Station in Hanksville, Utah. The student-led, cross-disciplinary team comprises more than 75 undergraduate students and five graduate student mentors from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. “This win is also the fruit of six years of hard work by hundreds of WVU students, including those who are currently here and who have graduated, those who have been to Utah and who have stayed back, those who boldly proposed new ideas and those who were quietly making sure everything worked perfectly,” said  Yu Gu, team faculty adviser and mechanical and aerospace engineering associate professor.  Read more: https://wvutoday.wvu.edu/stories/2023/06/05/wvu-robotics-team-wins-international-mars-rover-challenge   #3 – From WV ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT –  If you're a fan of action movies, you'd be pleased to know that some real-life military training exercises happened in West Virginia recently.  The Civil-Military Innovation Institute hosted a military field training exercise and experimentation event, known as Driving Innovation in Realistic Training Days 23-001, in partnership with the United States Army Combat Capabilities Development Command and the 101st Airborne Division. It was held at CMI2's Adaptive Experimentation Facility in Fola, West Virginia, which is actually a repurposed coal mining facility.  The event allowed soldiers to participate in and lead the development and field testing of emerging tactics and technology while bolstering their operational skill sets through challenging, realistic exercises. The event was designed to emulate future operational environments the soldiers could experience in an age of intensifying technology and threats. In short, it was a chance for soldiers to have fun, learn some new skills, and prepare for whatever the future might bring them. Although West Virginia may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of defense companies, recent events show that the state has a lot to offer. With its world-class military training facilities, strategic location, and business-friendly environment, West Virginia is an ideal location for defense companies that want to develop new tactics and technologies and work closely with the military.  Read more: https://westvirginia.gov/robots-in-yes-west-virginia-say-what/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. The Hillsboro School District, Oregon Air Show Charitable Foundation, Oregon Air Show, Portland Community College, and Port of Portland held a grand opening celebration for the Oregon Aerospace Careers for Everyone, or O-ACE, program on Thursday, April 7, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hillsboro Airport. O-ACE is a high school pathway program for students interested in careers as aviation maintenance technicians, avionics technicians, or professional pilots. The program began in the fall of 2020 and has a goal of increasing diversity within the industry by introducing nontraditional - female and/or non-white - candidates to the field. The course is taught by a bilingual, licensed female pilot - Sheri Fisher. Our Featured Students are Glencoe's Robotics Team 4488 Shockwave. They have been a powerful force in FIRST Robotics since their rookie season in 2013. Fresh off a competition win and Excellence in Engineering Award at the Pacific Northwest District Clackamas Academy Event over Spring Break, they are currently ranked #2 in Oregon and #4 in the Pacific Northwest heading into the District Championship event in Spokane April 6-8, which is post-press time. They are poised for a great showing in Washington and an almost certain invite to the World Championships in Houston later this month. Learn more about the team on their website glencoerobotics.com and visit our website to watch an inspiring video created by the Oregon School Boards Association in 2016 as part of their Promise of Oregon campaign. If you'd like to donate to the team to help them get to the World Championships, you can do so through the Glencoe Webstore. www.hsd.k12.or.us

It doesn't matter what country you live in, or what industry you build a career in, STEM skills are increasingly important - particularly for children and students who are yet to join the world of work. Introducing robotics to children at a young age in the same way that we enroll them in soccer or piano lessons should be a real consideration. However, the participation costs are often so prohibitive that it's out of the question for most schools and parents. On Episode 11 of Season 2, we're joined by entrepreneur and philanthropist, Jared Schrieber. He envisions a world where there are as many elementary and high school robotics teams as there are basketball or football teams. He founded Revolution Robotics; a non-profit dedicated to making robotics hardware and software kits accessible to all communities, to make his vision into a reality.SUBSCRIBE TO THE ROBOT BRAINS PODCAST TODAY | Visit therobotbrains.ai and follow us on YouTube at TheRobotBrainsPodcast, Twitter @therobotbrains, and Instagram @therobotbrains.| Host: Pieter Abbeel | Executive Producers: Alice Patel & Henry Tobias Jones | Production: Fresh Air Production See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Think of a high school club, and you might think about a group of young students meeting regularly to engage in a common topic. Accurate, but the Del Norte High School's Team Optix 3749 Club builds robots and competes with them. This, and so much more.At its core, the purpose behind Team Optix 3749 is to provide an environment for students to learn about technology and robotics; to offer a place for them to build and test their own robots as they prepare to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competitions.Listen to our guests, Nicole Pi and James Hunt, and you'll hear about a highly successful club that gets students to participate; successful in raising funds to keep the club running; and successful in building and competing with their robots. And this is where things go way beyond just their club. The mission for Team Optix 3749 is to also lend aid to the community by teaching students valuable skills in computer science, business, entrepreneurship, and other fields that are often not included in school curriculums. The team also graciously shares some of the funds they raise with other clubs in the high school to ensure they can enhance the learning and life experiences of more students.Furthermore, the team also goes above and beyond technology and business in the community to help the citizens as they host food and supply drives; they did not allow the current pandemic to deter them.Team Optix 3749 hopes to expand its impact to reach more students and do more for the community. Our hope is that you listen to this episode and leave with a bit of inspiration to take action yourself.GuestsNicole Pi, VP of Strategy of Team Optix 3749 | Sophmore at Del Norte High School: class of 2023James Hunt, Outreach Director of Team Optix 3749 | Junior at Del Norte High School: class of 2022This Episode's SponsorsBugcrowd: https://itspm.ag/itspbgcwebDevo: https://itspm.ag/itspdvwebResourcesTeam Optix is Del Norte High School's FIRST Robotics Competition team: https://www.team3749.orgTo see and hear more The Academy content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/the-academyAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships
