Closing a sale is often presented as a logical set of actions. You say these things in this order, you carry yourself in this way, and people will be persuaded to buy from or hire you. In reality, though, closing a sale starts with emotional decisions, answering questions like "How do I feel interacting with this person?" and "Could I see myself following the same path as their previous clients or customers?" That starts with you, but there's another important ingredient to help you seal the deal: case studies. To help us outline what makes for a good case study, we're joined by TEDx speaker and sales expert John Livesay. Also known as "The Pitch Whisperer," John's the author of the best-selling books, "Better Selling Through Storytelling" and "The Sale Is In The Tale" and is the creator of the online course "Revenue Rockstar Mastery." John specializes in training sales teams "how to turn mundane case studies into compelling case stories," and in this episode, he explains how you can do the same. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge talks to sales keynote speaker, the author of https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NRTKKZ9/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i1 (Better Selling Through Storytelling) and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09R4G61N9/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0 (The Sale Is In the Tale), “The Pitch Whisperer” John Livesay. John and Josh discuss how many entrepreneurs feel like they're drowning in a ‘sea of sameness', as John puts it. What he shares is that you have to be an effective storyteller in order to close sales. You have to stand out from your competition and give your prospects a reason to buy from you; facts and figures during a rehearsed sales pitch aren't going to cut it anymore. You have to create real relationships with your prospects and be a great storyteller to earn their business. That's what John's newest book, The Sale Is In The Tale, is all about. Stories are what people remember, so tell good ones. But why are stories critical to connecting with your audience, customers, investors, employees, and more? Stories win because they make you magnetic and memorable, John explains. Most prospects ‘interview' a few options before making the choice of who they will buy from. When they have that next appointment after the sales call, you have to show them you're different from the crowd. If you don't stand out from a list of considerations, the prospect will choose the cheapest option. Sell better and stand out through telling captivating stories during your discovery calls. You have to sell yourself and your company in a clear, concise, and compelling way. John's book Better Selling Through Storytelling is the best book for entrepreneurs just learning about how to pivot into storytelling selling. He explains that this book is a great place to start and learn how this works, whereas The Sale Is In The Tale shows the reader these strategies actually work through a narrative format. These books help you tell a great story through both tactical explanation and, not surprisingly, through storytelling. We all have moments where we feel frustrated, disappointed, or rejected. John shares a tactic called the 555 method. Ask yourself if what you're stressed or upset about will matter in 5 minutes, 5 hours, or 5 days. Most things won't matter in those time frames and many of your daily problems and negative experiences can be filtered out using this technique. The key? When you're ready to let go of something that's bothering you, you actually have to let it go and not talk about it anymore. Don't give your energy to the things that don't matter in the grand scheme of life. Focus on the things that will make a real impact over the course of your business and your life. John shares another nugget – don't share testimonials, share your clients' stories. Don't tell a partial story with your case studies, turn them into narrative opportunities. Clients love working with John because of his ongoing support after his talk which includes implementing the storytelling skills from his best-selling book and online course “Better Selling Through Storytelling. Here are the highlights of this episode: 1:36 John's ideal Client: My ideal client is anybody who has to pitch against competitors to win new business. It could be a small law firm, financial company, could be a big tech healthcare company, we all have to sell ourselves all the time, but typically it's a company that has 20 or more sales teams. People on their team that they need them to start winning when they're competing against competition. And the problem is, they're not telling stories, they're pushing out information. 2:25 Problem John helps solve: The biggest problem is, they believe that everybody has to 'get-to-know, like and trust them' before they buy. So, that belief causes a behavior of pushing out information, "you want me and my company now to buy?" and the problem is, people buy emotionally and then back it up with logic. And the (sales) rep are pushing out information. That is the problem I solve. How to figure out how to tell something that pulls you in as opposed to pushing out. 3:16 Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to John: A lot of them say "urgh, I'm just so tired of coming in second place" or "I wish I didn't have to feel so pushy? or "this whole process is not feeling good; I don't know what I'm doing wrong, what the missing link is, and people are forgetting what I say after I hang up." 4:05 What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding John and his solution: Well, the biggest problem is, they get stuck in what I called the 'friendzone at work' where they get all excited and tell their boss "oh, someone said they're interested it means someone is going to buy, right? They asked me to send them some stuffs" and almost everyone that I ever talked to at any industry goes "urgh, I've been there." And the problem is, just because someone says they're interested doesn't mean they're ready to buy. You haven't 'intrigue' them enough, you haven't target those 'heart-strings' to get people to open their 'purse' strings. 4:52 John's Valuable Free Action (VFA): The biggest thing that you can do to improve your game if you will, is to learn how to tell a better story. Because whoever tells the best story, is the one that gets the sale. I literally would say now 'the sale is in the TALE'. And if you can learn to become a better storyteller, people would want to take your calls, people remember what you said, they then become your brand ambassadors because they can repeat the story. Nobody repeats a bunch of information. So, the biggest thing that you can do is realize that a story needs to have an 'emotional hook' and when you start looking at the stories you remember or that you like, and start putting yourself in a story as the ‘sherpa' not t...
To successfully entice people in buying what you have to offer, piquing their interest is the first major step. And for John Livesay, selling through storytelling is the most effective way to do so. By gathering enough confidence in telling stories, entrepreneurs can forge meaningful connections with their audience like no other. John also talks about his different faces of fear, balancing work and relaxation, and handling sales challenges, especially during the pandemic.

Instead of pushing your message out to your prospects in hopes that they'll latch on, sellers can make their message magnetic and practice better selling through storytelling. John Livesay is known as the “pitch whisperer” because he helps people become compelling storytellers. Plato said stories rule the world, and it's still true, except 2,600 years later, we have many distractions that he didn't have. Push and pull Pushing your message out to sell a product or service just doesn't work anymore. The new technique is to pull people in with great stories. John's work as a storyteller began at an ad agency where he was tasked with creating 30-second commercials for movies. He discovered the need to tell a concise story that made people want to see the movie. During a stint in Silicon Valley, he competed against IBM and other massive companies to sell technical products. He realized that if you confuse people, they say no. But you can pull people in by telling the story of what the technology does. His work culminated in a career selling ads for Conde Nast magazine, where he had to bring to life the vision of a particular brand to a particular advertiser so they could see why their brand would resonate with the stories being told in the magazine. Self-esteem roller coaster John points to the fact that sellers tend to feel good about themselves only when their numbers are up. When they're down, self-esteem suffers. He recognized his sense that he had to constantly push information out, which was exhausting. Even worse, if you're pushing and trying without getting anything in return, you end up feeling bad about the whole process. Good storytellers allow people to see themselves in the story, which makes the message magnetic. When you become a better storyteller, people want to take your calls and open your emails. #MagneticMessage Campfires The glow of PowerPoint has replaced the glow of campfires, and we often sit in meetings where someone reads to us from a slide. Don't do that. Nobody wants to be read to. John suggests using a series of images from which you can tell a story. Stories work because of our right-brain, left-brain way of processing information. If you're buying a car, when the seller shares how many miles-per-gallon it gets, you cross your arms and prepare to negotiate on price. But if you say, “Donald, let me tell you a story of someone like you who bought this car and how it changed his life,” you'll pull the buyer into the story. People buy emotionally and then back their decision up with logic. Sellers who deal in Ferraris don't talk about miles-per-gallon. They sell the emotion of driving a sexy car. People buy emotionally, and storytelling is the best way to tap into people's emotions. If you tug at people's heartstrings, they open their purse strings. Sales outreach John recently worked with Honeywell on the sales of technical products that keep the air clean inside operating rooms. The team talked a lot about the technology and the specifications and how it was better than what the competition had to offer. The real story is what happens if the air isn't clean in the operating room. The patient gets an infection and has to be readmitted for additional surgeries. Just about every seller has a case study or testimonial of some sort that can form the basis of a good story. Paint a picture Some sellers use before-and-after pictures to sell their product or service, accompanied by a bunch of facts. There's no emotion or story. A good story has exposition and it paints a picture of the work you did with a previous client. It marries the who, what, when, where, and why of a client with the problem you were solving. It demonstrates how much better life is for your client after he works with you. But you are never the hero in the story. Tell your story so that the client can see himself in your story. It will make your closing very different because the client will want to take that journey with you. Tell a story with specifics, and be sure to include the drama that happened along the way. Presentations Most sellers make the mistake of having too many words in their PowerPoint presentations, and failing to think about what their opening will be. Thanking them for the opportunity to be there isn't memorable because everyone does it. The fact that you're excited isn't what excites your clients. Whether you're pitching to fund a startup, to get hired, or to tell people why they want to work with you, use an opening that pulls people in. It's the most important part of any presentation. Sellers often rely on ploys like presenting last in hopes that their presentation will be the most memorable, but the best story is going to get the sale. It doesn't matter what order you present in. Sell yourself first, then sell your company, and then sell your product or service. Most people skip the first two. Tell a story about yourself, then about the company and its culture, and then how you help other people. Elements of a story Don't just tell the story of how you solved a problem for a client. Paint a picture of the resolution and what the client's life looks like now. John recounted a client who was dropped into the Amazon jungle when he was 18 to survive for two weeks as a rite of passage. The entrepreneur shared the story of how his lessons in the Amazon jungle translated into the concrete jungle of entrepreneurship, and he got the funding he was looking for. His investors figured if he could survive in the Amazon, he'll figure out how to survive here. Make yourself memorable and connect emotionally with your prospects. It gives you a tool in your toolbox that you don't normally have. Three stories Anytime you're starting out with this concept, ask yourself these questions: How am I going to sell myself? Why did I take this job? What's the company story of origin? What case study can I develop into a story that people will see themselves in? Arthur Ash, tennis pro, said the key to success is confidence, and the key to confidence is preparation. Episode resources Grab a copy of John's book, Better Selling Through Storytelling.
