Tales from the Crypt!I had to reschedule my guest who was supposed to be on this week for Fans With Bands, which left a hole in the normal release schedule. However, this is a bit of a blessing in disguise! You see, when moving the podcast to Substack, there is an undocumented limit of 100 episodes that can be imported. Fans With Bands had 121 episodes, so 21 episodes from the first season are not here on Substack. So, to fill the void, you get to listen to the very first episode featuring Lansing's death metal band Recorruptor. I apologize in advance for the poor audio quality. In the early days of ZOOMing, well, sometimes, folks ' cell or internet signals were not the greatest. Beyond that, this is a time capsule as this episode was originally on Oct 26, 2020. I hope you enjoy this dip into the archives. I'll be working to sprinkle in the missing 21 early episodes over time so we have a full record of Fans With Bands here.Recorruptor Show NotesA chat with Clint, the vocalist for the Lansing, Michigan extreme metal band Recorruptor, and Nick, a fan of the band. In this episode, we talk about Nick's first experience with the band at Mac's (a classic dive bar in Lansing) and picking up Recorruptor's "Some S**t" demo. This launched Nick into following Recorruptor through their "Bloodmoon" and recently released "Funeral Corridor" albums. We also delved into the gateway bands of Slayer and Lamb Of God that pulled Nick and Clint into more extreme forms of metal. A big shout out to the godfather of the double kick drum, Dave Lombardo! Nick was curious as to the drinking routine for load in, and we got into Clint's 21st with Goatwhore, Black Fast, and Acid Bath. Hilarity then ensues :)Our talk gets a bit cerebral when we discuss the calming and cathartic aspects of metal music. While some may find the blistering chaos of Black Dahlia Murder beyond the pale. Extreme metal fans find the blasting power releases the tension from the day and leads to a blissful zen.Check out Recorruptor's music on BandcampFollow Recorruptor on Facebook InstagramYou can also follow Fans With Bands on Facebook and InstagramFor samplings of music by artists featured on Fans With Bands, drop by our playlist on SpotifySupport the podcast!! BEST OF: Catholics traditionally abstain from eating meat flesh on Fridays since Jesus sacrificed his flesh on this day. Instead, Christians are known for their Fish Fridays, a practice at least partially derived from Norse mythology and the goddess of fish for which this day of the week is named - Freya. The Pope still wears a mitre hat which resembles the mouth of a fish and he presides over the Holy See, or Sea, wherein the fish are gathered. Fish and water are, of course, the focus of many parts of the Bible, from Jesus walking on water to the stories of fishermen and the feeding of thousands. Rastafarians and Latter Day Saints are both famous for their diets, too, which include abstaining permanently or mostly from meat, additives, chemicals, fruit not in season, etc., including hot drinks, alcohol and tobacco. Muslims also abstain from pork, just as Hindus see the cow as sacred. These restrictions, which include fasting and abstinence, are likewise cornerstones of the ancient mystery traditions from the Americas to Egypt, Greece, and Asia. These are the ways that the internal body or temple is cleansed. The external body is cleansed through ritual bathing or baptism. Ritual space also has to be purified, just as the mind must be given recluse. The result of these actions was hopefully living resurrection - being born again. Today, however, the Catholic Church wants to resurrect the practice of abstaining from meat, but not because of Jesus. Instead, Jesus has been replaced with a false idol. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement

WATCH ON YOUTUBE HERE! “If you do not know how to feast, you do not know how to feast.” -GK Chesterton Not gonna lie… as a teen I usually weighed my Lenten resolution options against how good I'd look in a swimsuit by Easter. To be honest, I never “got” fasting. I still don't know if I do, but this year I've received a few great new books that completely transformed my outlook on Lent and fasting and, dare I say, made me look forward to this penitential season!? Today I'm going way beyond the McDonald's fish sandwich and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I'm interviewing one of the editors of Sophia Institute Press's The Lenten Cookbook. Kristen Van Uden is a wealth of knowledge regarding how Lent and different fasting traditions came together over the centuries. You'll also learn about the TRUE purpose of fasting and how to do it well, and the continuity of fasting traditions throughout the centuries. Topics Discussed Fasting as preparation and reparation Importance of integrating our physical bodies and spiritual souls Overview of the history of Lent Early fasting traditions: The Black Fast, Xerophagia, Collations, Ember Days, Rogation Days The Church's current fasting requirements Resources Buy The Lenten Cookbook here! Today on The Great Metal Debate Podcast – our review of Angelus Apatrida's new self-titled album. Angelus Apatrida is a thrash metal band hailing from Spain. I'd heard the name before, as well as some of their music, but prior to this honestly hadn't made myself familiar with their entire catalogue which includes six previous full-length albums dating back to the mid-2000s. Stylistically, Angelus Apatrida gives you standard thrash content, one might even characterize it as ‘old school'. Their sound reminds me a lot of the kinds of thrash metal I heard back in the late 1980s and early 1990s – bands like Annihilator, Kreator, and Testament. If you are looking for deep technical dives along the lines of Black Fast or Vektor their brand of throwback thrashiness might leave you wanting. Overall, Angelus Apatrida – the album – is a good representation of the band. If you are a fan of them, or of thrash generally, this checks all the boxes you are looking for in an album. Everything is well done – good music, songwriting, and production. I have a few critiques, but they are minor quibbles that don't diminish the overall endorsement. As an aside, I'm not a huge fan of bands having eponymous album titles after so many years, and it especially seems odd in this instance given there are no radical changes in line-ups or sound at this stage with Angelus Apatrida. It's not a deviation at all – making it almost random this is the album they chose to mark with the band's own name. Jumping into the mix, the album begins with “Indoctrinate” – a sturdy, galloping track that is well-greeted, getting right to the aggressive stuff. The guitars are big and fast, if not especially complex, and they churn relentlessly. Traversing the album there are some definite other stars to highlight. “We Stand Alone” provides dynamic rhythm that transitions into a nice atmosphere through the chorus. Maybe the best solo on the album in this track. “Rise Or Fall” is one of my personal favs, with a fat guitar sound and killer chorus that will be well-received and echoed back in the live setting. “Childhood's End” (not sure whether this is a reference to the classic science fiction novel – I'd like to hope it is) finds the guitars providing a bit more subtle, layered sound and a quick lead break that evades distinction. Another good one is “Empire of Shame”, which inexorably inflicts its blunt force-trauma riffing. Not every song is on-point, and there are a few generic thrash riffs that might just pass in the night. “Through The Gates” tries to set up for a big chorus but falls a bit flat in the delivery. And while I like “The Age Of Disinformation” I thought it a bit herky-jerky as far as song structure… points for effort, but I was never too sure exactly where that one was going. But in total the songs are good, falling a somewhat short of greatness. Coming out of the COVID ‘lockdown' year of 2020, the themes of disinformation, indoctrination, and epistemological uncertainty are certainly appropriate. Singer Guillermo Izquierdo provides all the grit you'd want and more in his vocal delivery, and wisely doesn't wander far from his comfort zone. With regard to production, all the instruments are placed up front in the sound, and you can hear everything well. The guitars have a pleasing crunch. The sound is just a hair over-compressed for my liking; it would have been nice for the mix to have given a little more space for the listener to breathe it all in. This album won't make by ‘best of 2021' but it is still one I can see staying in my listening rotation for a while and is well worth any metal fan checking out. The new album Angelus Apatrida is available beginning February 5th from Century Media Records and all the regular on-line sources of music.

You better get your doctors approval before changing anything in your life! I'm not a doctor. I have no training in the medical/dietary professions. I was an LAPD cop and now a Top Realtor in Los Angeles. Before you change anything in your life, make sure you speak and obtain your doctor's approval. What is there to do next? Where should you start? For one, I am amiss for why my addictive switch has not flipped as of yet. I have deduced that it's the culprit of me not fasting long enough. I'm at 11 total water fasting. Everyone has their secret number for flipping the switch, then covering it with a steel-reinforced switch holder, tungsten screws were also added for reinforcement and then you have it. A lifestyle set into place that is going to vanquish any and all fat, resulting in getting and remaining lean and healthy. How long will it take? Hundreds of single days, two days and three-day events, not enough. The re-feeds are also very hard to manage, all circling back to the food addictive switch not staying in the "off" position.Welcome to my over five-hundredth First Day. My start. Today is the day that I said yesterday that I'd start tomorrow.p.s. my willpower is strongest in the mornings until about 4 pm - that is when I may stumble and fall. I have so many times. The failing has become a habit. I know this is the best way. I know this way is the most beneficial to my system. I also know that doing the same thing the same way and failing each time is insanity. Maybe each time I do it is not exactly like the time before. The time is different - first and foremost. I'm at a different place in my life. And I have quit "big issues" before, and not for the first time.
This week I’ve got Pete Mattila from Tasmania, which is off the southern coast of Australia. We talk about his shop by the water’s edge, his US apprentice journey, and his design process. Before we get to the interview I wanted to mention today’s sponsors, First we have the Adirondack Folk School. It’s a non-profit school located in Lake Luzerne, in upstate New York. The blacksmithing program at the Folk School includes 24 classes with an incredible line of blacksmithing instructors this year. To see the complete list of classes or to register, visit their website: www.adirondackfolkschool.org. I’d also like to thank the New England Blacksmiths, the ABANA affiliate serving Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island. Who by the way will be driving the ABANA 2020 Conference in Saratoga, NY Check us out at http://www.newenglandblacksmiths.org/ Also They will be offering the Age of Iron weekend event at the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, It’s happening the 1st weekend in August, 3rd and 4th. Those interested in further details can contact Cindy Dickinson at cdickinson@hancockshakervillage.org or DM @HayBudden on Twitter or Instagram. If you mention I’m here for the blacksmithing you’ll get an extra $5 off at the door! Thanks NEB! OK, let’s dive right into this interview with Pete. What We Talked About Pete first went to a technical college for welding, then he got a job as an apprentice was with an industrial blacksmith at the Ipswitch railyards in Queensland, Australia. There he forged a lot of industrial tools for mines, alloy steel forging. Pete decided to go to art school and received his Bachelor of Fine art. He then received a scholarship for his master’s in fine art. Pete talks about his apprentice journey through the United States, which included working with Albert Paley, Mountain Forge and included a research residency at the Metal Museum. We talk about his design process which he includes 3 basic things: additive process, subtractive process and material displacement. When Pete works with clients for commissioned pieces, one of the things he asks for is 3 words from the client that encapsulates what they envision. About 80% of the time Pete sandblasts his sculptures first and then adds a chemical called Black Fast. Also follows up with beeswax. One of Pete’s goals this year is to convert his gas forge into a veggie oil burning forge. Guest Links Website - https://www.petemattila.com/ Instagram is @pete_mattila_

Aaron Akin is the singer/guitarist of Black Fast, a four-piece thrash metal band from St. Louis, Missouri, that has been around since 2010. When Aaron was 19, the members met in a college town in Illinois near St. Louis and have been friends as well as proficient musicians before founding the band. The Aquarian Weekly recently caught up with Akin to discuss the band’s new album, Terms Of Surrender, various songs from the recording sessions, the filming of their music video for “I Conspire” and more.
This episode of Get After It w/ John Kay features Velda Garcia, founder of Fayz Media Group and manager of such touring bands as Battlecross, Crimson Shadows, and Black Fast. If you are in a band, or are interested in the music business, this conversation is a must-listen. Let's get after it!
Here is the 31st installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring interviews with Black Fast's Aaron Akin, Artificial Brain's William Smith, and Topsy and Holm of Sanitys Dawn. These were recorded over three different nights during three different shows at Saint Vitus Bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Black Fast shared a bill with Hate Eternal and Vital Remains, and kicked major ass. I talked to their frontman/guitarist Aaron about the history of the band, their insane touring schedule, and what they'll be up to when the tour wraps up. Artificial Brain were a last minute replacement for Gath Šmânê as openers for Mitochondrion, Phobocosm and Auroch. I'd never officially met William before, but we have a lot of friends in common in the NY scene, including members of Grey Skies Fallen and his other band Buckshot Facelift. He's a hell of a frontman and a sweetheart of a guy. We talked about his onstage persona "Big Baby Brain" and the upcoming Artificial Brain album, as well as what Buckshot is up to. Sanitys Dawn were part of an insane six band Catbomb show that was headlined by the reunited Despise You. Their singer Topsy spotted me taking photos from the side of the stage and proceeded to literally get in my face. He made an impression, to say the least, and I figured that was as good a reason as any to put him and his drummer Holm on the podcast. At the end of our conversation, they said it was the first interview they'd done in 6 years. I promised them that as soon as I got back to Malaysia I'd get in touch with them for a real interview. Look for that to happen soon...ish. My thanks to everyone who took the time to talk to me, and to you for listening.
