The Big Food Talk
North Meets South at DJs Clam Shack in Wantagh NY

The Big Food Talk

Today I'm speaking with Anthony, the manager of DJ's Clam Shack in Wantagh, NY. DJ's Clam Shack blends the best seafood dishes from New England and the South. With it's original location in Key West Florida, the owners decided to open a second location on Long Island. The vibe is all about casual dining using quality ingredients and even has bragging rights for being featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with Guy Fieri. Anthony walks us through their mouth watering menu and even reveals some secret off menu items only for customers in the know. Don't know what an Ipswitch clam is? Listen to find out! As the warm weather approaches and restaurants begin re-opening for outdoor seating, DJ's Clam Shack is open for business and doing quite well as seafood lovers need their summer lobster roll fix. It's not your typical seafood shack location. Located near the Wantagh train station on Sunrise Highway it doesn't give off the beachy vibe it's original location in Key West became famous for. About Anthony and His Cooking Anthony grew up Italian, loving food and a passion to cook and be part of the restaurant industry. He became a butcher for over 15 years and learned how to cook working at a few Italian restaurants locally. He applied for the position at DJ's Clam Shack and his been there since it's opening in Wantagh, NY. Customers that know Anthony well enough come in and ask for the secret menu items. Listen in around the 11 minute mark. What's the difference between Norther and Southern Seafood? Anthony describes the difference in southern spices that pack a bit more heat. Think about blackened Mahi Mahi or cajun style shrimp. In the North we have grown accustom to our clam chowder and steamed little neck clams. Looking try something different? Try their fried conch fritters that aren't regularly available on Long Island. Sourcing Fresh Seafood is a Priority The Wantagh location gets a majority of it's fresh seafood that's available locally from Two Cousins over in Freeport, NY. If you've every been down Nautical Mile you've probably seen the south shore fish market that's been a landmark for decades. They are getting fresh fish delivered almost daily at their location including locally sourced little neck clams from Long Island. DJ's also does its best supply other local favorites like craft beer to it's customers all year long.. Ipswitch Clams Become Difficult to Source It's been business as usually except for one unique menu item that's become difficult to source over the past few months. If you've never had an Ipswitch clam it's completely different from any other baked or fried clam you've had before. All Ipswich clams are soft-shell clams (steamers), but not all soft-shell clams are Ipswich clams. What you really need to know is they are fried in a corn meal flour to add a touch of sweetness and deliver on maximum clam flavor. One Lobster Roll to Rule Them All The lobster rolls at DJs Clam Shack are notoriously delicious and overstuffed. They only use knuckle and claw meat in their rolls and you can listen to Anthony explain why around the 8 minute mark. The hot lobster roll packs a quarter pound of lobster meat sauteed in butter placed on a New England style split top bun and of course don't forget the butter! You can also get the cold lobster roll featuring a house made tarragon mayonnaise. It's their philosophy that simple is best to let the seafood be the star. If you're really hungry for lobster, don't pass up the chance to order their overstuffed lobster roll which features a whopping half pound of knuckle claw lobster meat! Don't be fooled by imitators offering lobster rolls with nothing but some skimpy lobster salad on a hot dog bun. Visit https://bigfoodtalk.com to make a donation.

This week I’ve got Pete Mattila from Tasmania, which is off the southern coast of Australia. We talk about his shop by the water’s edge, his US apprentice journey, and his design process.  Before we get to the interview I wanted to mention today’s sponsors, First we have the Adirondack Folk School.  It’s a non-profit school located in Lake Luzerne, in upstate New York.  The blacksmithing program at the Folk School includes 24 classes with an incredible line of blacksmithing instructors this year. To see the complete list of classes or to register, visit their website: www.adirondackfolkschool.org. I’d also like to thank the New England Blacksmiths, the ABANA affiliate serving Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Rhode Island. Who by the way will be driving the ABANA 2020 Conference in Saratoga, NY Check us out at  http://www.newenglandblacksmiths.org/ Also They will be offering the Age of Iron weekend event at the Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, It’s happening the 1st weekend in August, 3rd and 4th. Those interested in further details can contact Cindy Dickinson at cdickinson@hancockshakervillage.org  or DM @HayBudden on Twitter or Instagram. If you mention I’m here for the blacksmithing you’ll get an extra $5 off at the door! Thanks NEB! OK, let’s dive right into this interview with Pete. What We Talked About Pete first went to a technical college for welding, then he got a job as an apprentice was with an industrial blacksmith at the Ipswitch railyards in Queensland, Australia. There he forged a lot of industrial tools for mines, alloy steel forging. Pete decided to go to art school and received his Bachelor of Fine art. He then received a scholarship for his master’s in fine art. Pete talks about his apprentice journey through the United States, which included working with Albert Paley, Mountain Forge and included a research residency at the Metal Museum. We talk about his design process which he includes 3 basic things: additive process, subtractive process and material displacement. When Pete works with clients for commissioned pieces, one of the things he asks for is 3 words from the client that encapsulates what they envision. About 80% of the time Pete sandblasts his sculptures first and then adds a chemical called Black Fast. Also follows up with beeswax. One of Pete’s goals this year is to convert his gas forge into a veggie oil burning forge. Guest Links Website - https://www.petemattila.com/ Instagram is @pete_mattila_

In this episode of DE214, The show opens with the track mix of “Gratitude” this is a unique mix and features a nice complement between James' clean Stratocaster tone, and James Mitchell's heavier rocked out Les Paul sound, especially in the beginning of the track. It has a very “Petty esque” tone that is luscious to the senses. The show features the final “Mastered” version of the song “Gratitude” at the close of the show that is also the title track that went on the album of the same name. In this episode, we discuss: • James drove on his trip to the entire lower Eastern seaboard, then came back North through Florida's West Coast and into Nashville for a few days, then off to Morehead Kentucky to visit my friend and extraordinary guitarist George Barker, his wife Kris, and his brother Welton, both George and Welton are alumni of the infamous but most amazing band from the mid 70's “Tangent”. • English Bob stops by to visit, in his classic Jalopy, English Bob is a bit nervous and reticent to meet with Peter Griffin again as Peter showed up as a real cartoon on the last visit. James comments on English Bob's brightened suspenders that were recently treated with Iodine and then Vulcanized. English is using a new service “Yandal Booenpicken” who specializes in Iodine and Vulcanization techniques, giving them a bright and cheery, and effective, yandy, glassy of hangy.  • There are no siestas in Lower Ipswitch, English sputters like a car as he gets stuck on his magnanimity approach. He then describes Yandal's second business, that he opens in the afternoon, “Boone Pickens Chickens”. • Yandals process for best chicken, “He bakes it, he broilers is, he fries it, then he barbecues it. He does all four procedures. Feathers are optional, special orders, don't upset us, just let us serve you, and be a guest of us” The “ruffle effect”.                      • English Bob's pocket watch goes off and it's time for his deep knee bends. • Peter Griffin arrives and has swords with him, and being a cartoon character he immediately projects a hologram of a freeway right in the studio and almost gets James run over by a truck. Best Quotes from English Bob: “Yandal is a groundbreaking Booenpicken chicken man”.                “Oh a tempest in the Titanic”.  “Well Peter, you see I have been the most famous man alive in lower Ipswitch, when it comes to fencing, yes I can lunge, parret, or engarde”.                                               “Take that, you big bellied ballet dancer you”. “James are you aware that you have a freeway running through your studio at the moment?”  • On James Kevin's music: “It tends to remind me of Howling Wolf stuck in a peach tree overnight. Best quotes from Peter Griffin: “Hey how about this, get a load of my flamethrower”             “Damn the Torpedoes, full stampede and buffalo ahead”. “English Bob, your quite the swordsman, and I will always Paul Revere this dharmiconalova, as long as I live, and I never thought I would be in a swords contest today when I brought the swords, James Kevin”. Best quotes from James: • On calling the sword fight: “English Bob looks like he has the upper hand so far, I think he is going to slip in his world famous Ubiquitous Larchmont Move any second, (patent pending of course), but I understand that Peter Griffin has a Big Belly Ballet move that may be a close-sleeper”. “Wow both opponents giving it all that they have, they left nothing on the floor today in this unbelievable swordsmanship, as I've never seen before”. “Gentlemen, I don't have a hat on, but if I did, it would be off to both of you”. If your company isn’t developing software, just wait five minutes.   Many companies that never dreamed they’d be developing their own software are having to “roll their own.” Sometimes it’s an internal use only, as a custom layer over an existing platform like Salesforce, sometimes as a product they’re selling.   All this development means having to create your own development operations team. Development Operations (DevOps) has brought IT operations and development teams a lot closer than ever before. Both sides are using network monitoring and other IT tools in some capacity, but how is DevOps taking over functions that used to be in IT's wheelhouse? On this episode of the dHarmic Evolution podcast, James is joined by the infamous English Bob, a friend of the equally-infamous Jacked Up Jimmy from a few episodes ago. English Bob transports listeners into the unparalleled and quirky world of Lower Ipswich much like Lewis Carroll introduced the world to Wonderland. English Bob's mastery of the English language will somehow simultaneously be crystal clear and make you scratch your head in confusion. But regardless of your comprehension of his tall tales, you will undoubtedly be entertained and your creativity will be pushed to its limits by the end of our time together. You won't believe the turn of events that took Mama Bob from gathering gooseberries in the thicket to being destined for the Guinness Book of World Records. Auntie Griselda certainly has her own theory for the tragically provident incident that prompted the doctors to conduct an operation involving a zipper. English Bob had to pause his tour with Jacked Up Jimmy to rescue some orphans of a starchy variety and organize an adoption program in the community of Lower Ipswich, which is still recovering from Granny Grabowski's escapade involving pink stilettos. If you haven't already, be sure to check out our videos of English Bob instructing fencing and luring the North American Yeti, both of which for very unique reasons! Jeanne Hopkins, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Ipswitch, joins me, Jen Spencer to discuss respecting partners' time, the downfalls of un-aligned sales and marketing teams and more on this episode of The Allbound Podcast.   It sounds like there's a lot of co-selling or collaboration that's happening between your internal teams and partners. Is that the way it's always been at Ipswitch, or has that evolved over the years? It's not new. I think that we had some hiccups last year, where there were product introductions that were back to back to back to back - and you just don't do that with partners, right? We have updates to three very important products of ours coming up. I was looking at the timelines and one was early June, mid-June, and then end of June. I thought, "You know what, we can't do that to our partners. It's got to be a bundle." If it's going to be 2017 plus and it's going to be all these software upgrades, then we need to release it and be able to tell our partners all at once; because a channel partner has a lot of other customers. We're important and valuable to our partners, but then on the other hand we might only account for $20,000, maybe $50,000, maybe $100,000 worth of revenue. They have big partners that they're working with and we can be an afterthought in many respects. We need to respect their time, we need to respect their need for communication in a very concise way and not keep them from being able to be successful with all the other businesses that they're dealing with.I'm seeing this line blur between what's considered marketing and what's considered sales enablement. A lot of times I'm seeing people refer to sales enablement tools or resources and I'm thinking, "That's marketing." But it's a revenue focused, lead generation focused, demand driven focused marketing. For a marketing team, you're creating all kinds of content, you're trying to get your direct team, your internal teams to engage and use them. That could be really magnified when you're talking about a channel. What are some of the challenges that you face at Ipswitch with getting partners to actually engage with those tools and resources that you're providing? You're doing a lot for them, are they using it all? Are they only using part of it?Within our sales team we have a team of sales enablement people, who create videos and demo. When I joined this company I noticed there were a remarkable amount of marketing projects or programs being done by the sales team. The very first thing that I saw when I joined was a 61 page catalog of 40 products - it was quite a big project. It was presented to the marketing department; they were told to print it. Our marketing team was looking at it saying, "What is this?"   Additionally, sales has their own e-mail program that they use. So they were sending this direct mail piece, sending e-mails to customers ... a whole host of things. It was this whole shadow marketing organization. You have to ask yourself, "Why were they doing that?" It wasn't malicious. This shadow marketing was happening simply because sales was feeling that marketing was not helping them to achieve their objective. I've heard that there was a lot of “we can't”, and now we have a lot more “we can”, in terms of helping sales. I'm trying to grab hold of marketing and own it as a team. I think back to this particular catalog that was printed in the middle of November. On the cover it said 2016. I said to the salesperson, "It's the middle of November. Why wouldn't you put 2017 on this?" They were trying to get something done, but they didn't have the marketing experience. It wasn't a bad thing, they didn't do anything wrong. However, if they had given us some visibility into the project ahead of time, we might have been able to help. Because after you print 5,000 of these things and suddenly it's 2017, what are you going to do? Put a sticker on all of them? Think about all the things that you try to do as an organization, in terms of helping. What I've noticed is that we have North America field marketing, we have rest of world field marketing and then e-mail field marketing. They're not necessarily aligned with each other, so we're not necessarily getting the scaling capabilities. Channel partners are channel partners and they all need the same thing. They want margin, right? They want co-op dollars or some sort of MDF to be able to help them run their programs. They want leads. So, it's not necessarily content, Jen, it really is a financial relationship. But the inverse of that is what are your quotas? What are you delivering? Sometimes the channel partner is used to being successful on their own and not necessarily tying it to the goals and objectives of their partner. One of the things I'm trying to help partners understand is that we are all in the business of sales. How are we going to help them be successful going forward? What advice do you have for fellow marketing officers whose companies have partner programs and really want to increase their channel partners' contribution?Get involved. What I've observed is most chief marketing officers don't get involved. As a CMO, I've offered to be in meetings, and even if I can only dial in having the credibility of having a C-level person at the table gives the channel manager or the director of channel management so much more power in the relationship. Often you're working with a lower level person and the channel partner is holding all the cards, beating the bejeebers out of that poor manager of yours. But if you're able to be on these calls with these billion dollar partners or distributors and say, "We're investing in this program and this is what we're going to do", you can help. I was able to help the director of channel management for North America in a conversation with a partner, where we were making an investment. We received a spreadsheet with options “two of these, and one of those, and three of these...” and so we're going through it and saying, "That has no value, that has no value, that has no value. Can we trade two of these for one of those which is definitely going to have value?" It was something Joan, our channel partner manager, wouldn't have thought because she didn't think she had enough power. But for me to be able to say, " I want to help you Joan and I want to help us be successful with this relationship." Whenever you make these investments in programs whether it's with MDF, co-op dollars, whatever, you want to make sure that they're used. So many times marketing people have no problem spending money, but don't figure out how to use money that is being handed to them on a platter. If you can make use of those dollars and make them more valuable, if that makes the channel partner happy, that is important as well. I'm going to go back to the two words, get involved, be present, show support. Those are six words, but just trying to make a statement here. As the chief marketing officer, the channel is important to you. To actually be a part of it, is what's going to make a difference for the organization.

Strange New England

The great 19th century American poet, John Greenleaf Whittier, composed a strange poem entitled "The Garrison of Cape Ann" that tells one of the strangest tales ever to come from colonial New England. The event he recounts for us is supposed to relate actual events that occurred during the same year that the Salem Witch Trials occurred - 1692. Whittier's poem isn't very long and relates the tale of a garrison of soldiers inside the Fort at Cape Ann, Massachusetts. What is so bizarre about this episode is the nature of the beings assailing them from outside the walls of the fort. Contemporary witnesses had difficulty describing these beings, unsure if they were men or something else. Whatever they might have been, a group of strange beings are attacking the walls of the fort, beings that seem foreign and evil. They wear strange garb, never-before-encountered suits made of a material that shines. They have a language that no one in the Fort can understand or even identify. They seem to possess weaponry like nothing the colonists have ever seen before.  Even though the garrison's soldiers shoot their muskets at these strangers and undoubtedly hit them, no damage is ever done. The strange beings fall down in mock wounding and rise again, laughing.  No one is ever killed. The beings continue to cavort and mock the soldiers. It appears that there is nothing that can stop them.  Then, the Captain of the Garrison puts down his gun and tell the soldiers that there is but one way to beat the creatures. First, he rips a silver button from his jacket and rams it down the barrel of his musket. Then, he takes aim for the creature he deems to be their leader and shoots, hitting him in the chest. The being instantly disappears. Surely this is evidence of the doings of the Devil.  Then the Captain calls upon his faith. He falls to his knees and begins to pray and he instructs his men to do the same. They comply. Soon a foul scream is heard outside the walls and the strange beings simply begin to disappear. Prayer, it seems, is a better defense than musket balls. Whittier must have heard of this well-known legend as a youth, but it is available for everyone to read as chronicled by a contemporary of the Cape Ann witnesses, Cotton Mather, in his book, Magnalia Christi Americana. Mather claims to have interviewed the main character in the actual story, making it as close to a primary source as we are likely to find. The events began with the experiences of one man and his family. Ebenezer Babson, yeoman farmer from Cape Ann (also called Gloucester in the Mather text), one summer evening in 1692, heard noises outside his home.  The darkness was deep in early New England, especially in the country and one did not lightly step outside to investigate without looking out the window first. When he did, there was nothing he could discern. While his family remained safely inside, Babson ventured outside to see what was causing the strange sounds that so vexed his family. The noises indicated a large number of people were in his yard, running back and forth. When he investigated, there was no evidence that anyone had ever been there. The sound stopped...for that night. However, the sounds returned for many consecutive nights, frightening the family. A few weeks later, Babson was returning home alone. It was one of those midsummer evenings where the sun seems to linger on the edge of the horizon, painting the sky a dazzling shade of orange. The air was cooling quickly and soon, night would fall. From a distance, he saw two strangers leave his house from the front door. He was about to shout at them to stop when they noticed him and took off at a clip down the road, away from the Babson farm. Babson ran home and immediately questioned his family who were all safely inside the house. Who were these strangers and what did they want, he asked. His family was confused. There had been no strangers, they claimed. No one had visited them that day. He must be mistaken.  With no further hesitation, Babson armed himself with his musket and began searching for these erstwhile intruders. Though he could find no discernible tracks, his good sense told him that these men must have taken the route straight through the corn field. He followed, slowly and deliberately. At the edge of the field with night finally falling , he heard a strange, hollow voice speaking in a monotone, saying, "The man of the house is now come else we might have taken the house." These mark the only words spoken by the strangers in English.  That is when Babson saw the strangers up close for the first time, but only for a moment in the falling dark. When they saw him, they ran away instantly into the swamp, an area he would not enter, leaving him wondering who, or for that matter, what they were. They did not look like or dress like the natives he knew and they did not look like Englishmen. It is at this point in the narrative where the strange nature of the beings begins to be apparent - they were unlike any men he had ever seen. Yet, if they weren't natives and they weren't Englishmen, what were they?  Whatever they were, he did not want his family to have to face them alone, particularly after what they had just spoken a moment ago. Running back to his farm, Babson had his family gather some things. They repaired to the local fort where they could safely spend the night without regard for marauding strangers. However, the moment they entered the well-manned fort, everyone inside heard a ruckus beginning outside the walls. The noise was similar to what the Babsons had been hearing at their home, but this time it was louder and more raucous. Babson was by now so frustrated and angry at the series of events that he opened the fort's gate and ventured out to see exactly who they were. All he saw were two men running swiftly away down the dirt track away from the garrison.   In early America, there were threats abounding from all sides. Babson and the men at the fort had not clearly seen the two men, but they must have assumed that they were scouts for a much larger force not very far away. Natives may have been their first suspects, but Babson's one close peek at them convinced him they weren't the culprits. Perhaps they were Frenchmen. That made more sense as these two men were strangely attired in clothing that the simple New Englanders had never seen before in their lives. Surely only Frenchmen would dress in such a fashion.  Perhaps these were truly criminal types, not unknown in the colonies. Pirates might even be an explanation. The fort prepared for an attack which must surely come before dawn. Except it never did. The Babson family was so shaken up by the hole affair that they remained in the fort. Two nights later the two oddly-dressed strangers returned to the fort and they were armed. Again, Babson walked out of the fort to face them when he saw them move with a super-human rapidity. The men on the fort's ramparts aimed their muskets at the men but, strangely, they took no shots. Their reason was that the men were moving so quickly from place to place that they could not get a bead on either of them. The strangers didn't run away so much as run about . The good folk of Cape Ann were awestruck and dumbfounded at the idea of these strange visitors bothering their peace. Who were they? What did they want? Where did they come from?  The next time we hear of these strange intruders is on July 14, 1692.  All of the men in the garrison witnessed a group of six of these strangers approaching the settlement. Expecting to be attacked, the men of Cape Ann waited patiently for the right moment to attack. They waited until they were within range of their guns. When the moment arrived, the villagers moved and frightened the six strangers with their action. The strangers scattered. Babson, whose story this is, found one of them in his sights. He fired, but the weapon strangely failed to discharge.  The weird visitors moved rapidly to avoid the villagers, but at one point three of the strangers arose from the swamp walking strangely, shoulder to shoulder in perfect cadence. Babson reports that he fired again - only a single shot, at which point all three of the strangers fell to the ground. However, the excitement of the villagers was short-lived. As soon as they reached the fallen, they simply arose and jumped about, moving merrily about them "apparently without hurt or wound of any kind. Then, for the first time, one of the strangers withdrew from their strange clothing what Babson reported as a 'silver gun' and shot at Babson. The weapon discharged a shot that lodged in the tree that Babson was hiding behind. Later, Babson would remove the shot from the wood only to discover that it was long and pointed, unlike the round lead balls that were the shot of the day among the world's armies. His description sounds like he found a modern bullet. These types of pointed bullets did not come into use until 1823 when Captain John Norton introduced them for use in the British Army, yet Babson describes a pointed bullet lodged in the tree from the stranger's silver gun.  There were other incidences of these strangely clad beings appearing and other reports of them being shot, falling down, and then getting up and cavorting without any obvious damage. It was as though they were play acting and this highly strange behavior left the colonists at their wits end. Everyone involved in the attack returned to the safety of the fort, unsure what to make of the day's happenings. It didn't take long for the strangers to return once again, this time at night and no longer simply walking but flitting from stone to tree, from wall to road and back again. Other forms were perceived as crouching behind rocks, staring at the colonists. Still, the good people of Cape Ann had no idea who they were dealing with. They were perplexed and in their time, it was not a very far jump to assume that what they were dealing with might be of the Devil himself. After all, they spoke a strange tongue, moved about in an odd, inhuman way, and could not be harmed. If your gun could fire off a shot, it never did any damage, even when it hit them square on. The colonists sent word to Ipswitch, to a certain Captain Appleton for help. He dutifully arrived with his sixty heavily armed men to hold the town from any and all invaders and attackers. The people of the town could sleep more easily now that the professionals had arrived. Except the military men had no better luck than the men of the town. Over and over again they fired their muskets at the strange revelers to no avail.  Nights were worse than days for it was then that the strangers grew more and more restless, throwing stones at the garrison (lithobolia), hitting the wall with clubs, and shouting in a strange, unintelligible language.  No progress was made and it seemed there was no end in sight. One line of Whittier's poem reads, " Lay aside your useless weapons; skill and prowess naught avail; They who do the Devil's service wear their master's coat of mail." But it did all come to an end after one final encounter with, of course, Babson.  In a sojourn that took him out of the confines of the town one day, Babson discovered three of the beings walking down the middle of the road. He took up his musket to fire at them, but it again misfired. The three strangers simply walked past him, barely acknowledging his presence. After nearly three weeks of being terrorized by these odd creatures, it stopped as suddenly as it began. No one died. No permanent damage was done to anyone involved. What caused it to stop may have been the simple fact that the colonists stopped attacking the strangers. Without the colonists attentions, the strangers simply stopped and then disappeared. No one knows who or what they were or why they seemingly delighted in taunting, teasing and frightening the residents of this early American settlement half to death. There are many strange theories about the nature of these beings. Of course, at the time the conclusion was easy to draw that they were demons sent from the infernal regions who from time to time intruded among the righteous to test their faith. In later years, other theories such as ghosts, extraterrestrials, and even inter-dimensional beings were proposed. Perhaps the simplest explanation is one that the colonists themselves first came up with when Babson first encountered the 'spectre leaguers' - perhaps they were only Frenchmen, after all? What was stranger to an Englishman than a Frenchman? But even Frenchmen cannot sustain a chest shot from a musket at close range. The ability for the stranger to receive a lead ball square in the chest and then rise again with no apparent injury puts them in a league of their own. In fact, the name that legend gives these beings is 'Spectre-Leaguers'.  Perhaps they were time-travelers with some kind of force field that protected them from the lead balls of the colonists? The strangeness of this episode in early American history is unique - no other report like it has ever been found. It is plausible that Cotton Mather , no stranger to the power of propaganda, used this tale as a kind of Christian pcautionary tale - 'be warned against the strangers from afar...' The idea of strange beings from the edge of the world come to raise havoc and disquiet the good people of the colony must have always been in the back of their minds. Perhaps this tale is nothing more than a story, but if it isn't, it then becomes one of the earliest reports of high strangeness from New England.  SOURCES Citro, Joseph A.,  Passing Strange: True Tales of New England Hauntings and Horrors, copyright 1996, Capters Publishing, Shelburne, VT. Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Susan Abbott Today's guest(s): Gregory Tracy, Managing Editor of the Pilot Newspaper. Today's topics:Cardinal Seán and Pope Benedict deliver messages to the pilgrims in Madrid for World Youth Day, a petition in support of euthanasia is submitted to the Massachusetts Attorney General, and Fr. Rich Erikson reflects on closing his term as the Vicar General. Summary of today's show: Scot, Susan, and Greg discuss messages at World Youth Day and local and international Catholic news. 1st segment: Scot welcomed Susan back to the studio, as it's been a while since they co-hosted a show together. Susan explained that, contrary to what we said on the show two weeks ago, she was not on vacation - she was at a conference in Springfield with other catechists. Reporter John Allen was the keynote speaker for the event. Susan said she was also at CatholicTV last week talking about Catechetical Sunday, which is coming up on September 18th. Susan explained that John Allen spoke about his most recent book, The Future Church, about ten trends he sees, and said the book is hopeful work from an objective writer. She said one of the biggest trends Allen identifies is that the Church is no longer a Church of East and West but of North and South. Scot recalled a column where Allen shared his themes, and said he agreed with Allen's analysis of a shift in our Church to South America and Africa. 2nd segment: Scot welcomed Greg Tracy from the Pilot newspaper to the program, and talked about the Pilot's front page story this week - a picture of the massive crowds gathered in Madrid. Greg lamented that the Pilot is only a weekly newspaper and couldn't get pictures of the Pope's arrival today in time for printing, but promised a full issue next week dedicated to coverage of the Pope's time spent in Madrid over the next few days. Scot said that even though Pope Benedict has only been on the ground for a few hours, he's already had the chance to give three significant addresses - the first almost as a head of state to diplomats and the King and Queen of Spain, the second when he first greeted the pilgrims, and the third after a reading from Scripture in a homily to the youth. Scot read an excerpt from the homily: Dear young people, listen closely to the words of the Lord, that they may be for you “spirit and life” (Jn 6:63), roots which nourish your being, a rule of life which likens us – poor in spirit, thirsting for justice, merciful, pure in heart, lovers of peace – to the person of Christ. Listen regularly every day as if he were the one friend who does not deceive, the one with whom we wish to share the path of life. Of course, you know that when we do not walk beside Christ our guide, we get lost on other paths, like the path of our blind and selfish impulses, or the path of flattering but self-serving suggestions, deceiving and fickle, which leave emptiness and frustration in their wake. Scot highlighted that Pope Benedict is addressing a common theme - that youth have pressure from many sources to conform to values that aren't of the Catholic faith. Susan said she was struck by the sometimes poetic language that the Pope used. Susan said she also enjoyed a piece of the previous paragraph talking about words, where the Holy Father said that "...there are words which serve only to amuse, as fleeting as an empty breeze; others, to an extent, inform us; those of Jesus, on the other hand, must reach our hearts, take root and bloom there all our lives." Scot said that the Holy Father used the theme of World Youth Day and themes from last month's Gospel readings about fertile soil to encourage the youth to "grow in divine grace." Greg said it was interesting to hear that he was reaching out to the youth in a more cerebral way, approaching the youth with great ideas and asking them to think about their reality more carefully. Greg continued to say that Pope Benedict seems to be also speaking out against the individualistic society - we should build communion among each other, not being alone. Greg said it was interesting to hear the Pope mention the word "friend" in respect to online activities - many people on their Facebook pages may have a thousand friends. The Holy Father was asking the youth to be careful not to dilute the meaning of the word. Susan said it's important for all of us to follow along with World Youth Day, and how amazing it is that the technology can help us do so, and how that can help make all feel connected to the events in Madrid even from this side of the Atlantic. Scot mentioned that a few websites are doing excellent coverage of World Youth Day Activities: 3rd segment: Scot introduced a segment from Cardinal Seán's catechesis session to English-speakers at World Youth Day on Thursday morning in Spain. Scot highlighted the Cardinal's words that the Eucharist is an extreme expression of God's love for us, and recalled that the founder of World Youth Day, Blessed John Paul II, often talked about love as self-gift or self-donation. Greg commented that he very much agreed with Cardinal Seán - this is only the second World Youth Day that Greg hasn't been to. He said that it is difficult to sit at home and watch the coverage and wishing he was there to experience it, especially with three of his kids there - but came to the conclusion that even though he'd sell an organ to get a plane ticket to Madrid, he should be driven with the same exact zeal to go to church every single Sunday, not just to go to a large mass in Madrid. He emphasized that we need to remember that we can be part of the worldwide community of the Church every single weekend in our own parishes - no need to spend a thousand dollars on a plane ticket or travel to somewhere halfway across the world. Scot said that many of the pilgrims have shared that they're excited to see the Pope - but that the Pope said he doesn't want to be the star of the show, the star of the show should be Jesus Christ. Scot continued that it can be tough to bring the same excitement about a more routine Mass to a once-in-a-lifetime trip like World Youth Day, but that it is what we are all called to do. Susan said she was tickled to see that Cardinal Seán started his catechesis by drawing comparisons to Don Quixote - Scot commented that it isn't surprising knowing that he has a doctorate in Spanish and Portuguese literature. Susan said another favorite part was when Cardinal Seán asked why, if so many youth can read Harry Potter books, could they not read the Bible as well? Cardinal Seán continued and said that many people do not get what they should from the Eucharist because they don't ponder what they hear in the Gospel before receiving Jesus. Susan also said that one of Cardinal Seán's common themes is that we live in an age of entertainment - everyone wants to be entertained all the time. We need to come to Mass to hear the Word of God, give Him glory, and receive the Eucharist, and Cardinal Seán did a great job reminding us that the Mass is not entertainment but growth. Scot said that the Cardinal sometimes preaches at Confirmations and asks the confirmands to know and have an appreciation for what is happening at the Mass so that they might keep coming back. Greg said the Cardinal's answer to a question about the role of scripture in the Church stuck out to him as a former Protestant. Greg said he grew up being very connected to the Bible, and Cardinal Seán's words were important because of how difficult it was to come to grips with the idea that the Church had curated and organized the Bible as we know it. Greg compared it to giving someone a photo album of your life - a viewer of the album would know that you were at a beach, or in a forest, but not if you were having a good time. They wouldn't know if that was the vacation where you broke your toe or that it rained the whole time or that it was beautiful. In the same way, Greg continued, the Church's tradition fills in the context to the scriptures - a very important part of our faith. 3rd segment: Scot introduced an article in both the Pilot and the Anchor this week about a petition submitted to the Massachusetts Attorney General in support of euthanasia - so that elderly and sick people could legally take their own lives. Scot recalled that from what they have discussed on past shows, this is already legal in two states in the Northwest, and many pro-euthanasia activists consider Massachusetts "low hanging fruit." Greg said that the petition wasn't really a surprise, as there was a "Final Exit Network" billboard on I-93 weeks ago (now taken down) promoting support for euthanasia. The petition proposes a "death with dignity" ballot initiative, which must collect about 69,000 signatures to be accepted for a vote. If the signatures are collected, the petition goes to the Legislature who can either let it go, amend it, or offer an alternative to it. Greg listed the criteria for euthanasia according to the petition: the person must be given 6 months or less to live, the request must be made twice in writing, 15 days apart, the requests must be signed by two witnesses who can attest the person is not under duress, and the witnesses may not stand to gain anything from the death of the person. Greg said he thinks the important thing is that the Legislature avoid what we spoke about in the Netherlands several weeks ago - requirements started as stringent as the ones proposed here, and have slowly relaxed and become almost meaningless and are not enforced. Susan said the concept of euthanasia makes her crazy, and the possibility of people being given "death with dignity" without their permission is frightening. She continued, saying that the oversight board in one state is made up of doctors who perform these procedures - that kind of oversight isn't effective or safe for the public in the first place. Scot said that we all need to be speaking up against this, as there's a very well-funded lobby on the other side of the issue. Scot cautioned that if we don't form ourselves, neighbors, kids, and friends, we'll lose on this valuable issue like we have on many in the past. On a related note, Scot highlighted a short piece from the Pilot about Peter J. Cataldo, who was named this week as the first Chief Healthcare Ethicist for the Archdiocese of Boston. Scot said that Dr. Cataldo comes from a similar role in New Hampshire and spent 18 years at the Catholic Bio-Ethics Center as a policy lead as well. Scot explained that Dr. Cataldo will be helping oversee Catholic identity at the former Caritas Christi hospital now owned by Steward Health Care System. Scot quickly mentioned an opinion piece by Monsignor Francis Kelley on the IFRC from a Pastor's Viewpoint. Scot explained that the IFRC, or Improved Financial Relationship Committee and Model, is a better way for parishes to financially support each other and the whole Archdiocese. Msgr. Kelley was one of the first to implement and test the new model, and shares key lessons about what he has learned from the model. First, that stewardship must be tied to a parish's mission; secondly, that some people only buy into the mission of a parish when they feel an "ownership" of their place in the parish; and thirdly that "a rising tide floats all boats." Greg talked about a final column from the outgoing Vicar General, Father Rich Erikson, entitled "A great privilege from every point of view." In the column, Fr. Rich gives a farewell before going to Rome to study next month. Fr. Rich wrote about coming to know Cardinal Seán and respect his leadership, and how much he appreciates working with the Pastoral Center staff. Susan expressed that she had mixed feelings about Fr. Rich's departure - while she is happy that Fr. Rich has the opportunity to go to Rome to study, she will miss his leadership, intelligence, and personality in the building every day. Scot said that Fr Rich will join us on The Good Catholic Life for a show on Friday, August 26th, and encouraged listeners to tune in to hear from Fr Rich directly. Scot quickly mentioned Dr. E Joanne Angelo, a Tufts University assistant professor of psychiatry and medical doctor who was named one of three recipients of the 2011 People of Life Award. Susan added that she lives in Cambridge and is a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life. Scot also brought up that two parishes will be getting new pastors - Father Thomas Keyes will move from St. Francis of Assisi parish in Medford to be the new pastor of Our Lady of Hope parish in Ipswitch, and Father Albert Faretra will be moving from his current position as pastor at St Joseph parish in Belmont to be the new pastor of St Blaise parish in Bellingham. Scot and Greg closed by discussing a gathering the annual Vianney Cookout that the priests of the Archdiocese have every year to fraternize and hear a speaker. This year's speaker was Monsignor Peter Conley, a former Pilot editor. Greg said he wasn't personally present, but that he was told Msgr Conley's comparison of rectory life of the past and now as well as stories about Cardinal Kushing were well received by his fellow priests.
