Thanks for joining me for another great episode of One For The Road. This week I am joined by Simon Thomas. Simon first came to prominence when he became a Blue Peter presenter back in the late 90s. After six years on the famous children's show, he went on to become one of the country's best-known sports broadcasters on Sky Sports presenting the Football League and then the Premier League. In late 2017 Simon's world was turned upside down after his first wife Gemma died from a rare form of blood cancer just three days after diagnosis at the age of just 40, leaving him and their eight-year-old boy Ethan behind. After years of having an all-or-nothing attitude to alcohol, Simon descended into a two-year battle with the bottle as he struggled with grief and mental health problems. Having finally decided enough was enough, Simon has now been sober for over a year. As well as returning to sports presenting with Amazon Prime and Sky Sports, Simon is now a well-respected speaker on mental health, grief, and sobriety and is also the president of Blood Cancer UK. He has also found love again and married Derrina in the summer of 2021 and they now have a daughter called Talitha together. If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the insta handle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/ or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/ Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice for Simon.https://www.instagram.com/simonthomastv/https://bloodcancer.org.uk/www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/ www.instagram.com/grownuphustle/ Learn more about your ad choices. Safeguarding is a term used in Ireland and the United Kingdom that covers efforts to protect the health, wellbeing, and human rights of people, especially children and those who are otherwise vulnerable. At Diabetes UK, four people alternate by week as the safeguarding lead, helping to protect those that the charity comes in contact with. One of them is Josh Poncil, the online community and learning manager. Among his responsibilities is Diabetes UK's online forum. On this episode, we talk about safeguarding and knowing if you've done the right thing at the end of the day, plus: What is considered “too technical” for the average member to answer in a diabetes community? How Josh writes for a vulnerable audience Moderation decisions that could trigger a meltdown Big Quotes When veteran members go bad (18:39): “[After 25 years in content moderation,] I really believe that the most stressful situation is when an experienced member takes a turn for the worst. … It's painful because they are an example to other people in the community. Especially new members who see their posts and say, ‘That member has this number of contributions and has been in the community this long. If they [post] that and it's up still, that's probably how this community behaves.'” -Patrick O'Keefe An example of safeguarding in an online community (23:43): “I had someone on the forum saying, ‘I've just been diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. I've barely eaten.' That's like an alarm ringing bells in my head. I'll take the lead and private message them. … ‘Is everything okay? Could you please contact the helpline or tell us what's going on?' “Let's say they got back to me saying, ‘Yes, I haven't eaten anything. I don't feel well. I feel dizzy.' Then I'll contact back, ‘Do you need me to call an ambulance?' Sometimes they'll go back to me, ‘Yes, here's my address, my telephone number.' I'll ring [the emergency service] 999. I have to be careful what I say at the beginning because of my accent. I'm American, but I live in London. I have to make sure I'm not coming off as a scam. I'm calling from a charity. I have a safeguarding concern.” -Josh Poncil With safeguarding, you regularly are questioning if you did the right thing (24:53): “I've had someone on the forum saying, ‘My mom is in quite a worrying state. She's scared to go to the hospital. She's dizzy, she's not coherent. I'm scared she hasn't been testing for blood sugars.' On my end, I've contacted the daughter, ‘Please get your mom to [Accident and Emergency]. It sounds like she needs medical attention.' They've got back to me, ‘Thank you for getting in touch, but my mom didn't make it.' This affected me, and it hit me quite hard not knowing if I did the right thing. I have to just take a moment of, ‘Did I make the right choice? Is there anything else I could do at this time?'” -Josh Poncil About Josh Poncil For the last 4 years, Josh Poncil has been the online community and learning manager for Diabetes UK, after a stint at Blood Cancer UK. He went to school for creative writing and journalism, before transitioning to community by way of social media management. As a part of the 'living with Covid Plan' published in mid February 2022, today from 1st April the government is scrapping free Covid tests (with the exception of patient-facing NHS and care staff and Clinically extremely vulnerable patients). The UK Government mentions high levels of population immunity secondary to a successful vaccination programme and effective antiviral treatments as a reason for the scrapping in addition to the prohibitive cost to the taxpayer. However, both Care bodies and Doctor's organizations have criticized this move. Blood Cancer UK has mentioned that "Protection from Covid should be a right, not a privilege". BMA has said that providing free tests only to clinically vulnerable people once they develop symptoms, and not providing any free tests to their friends and family, was “completely illogical, as the priority should be protecting them from infection in the first place.” Patients Association, said that charging patients for lateral flow tests “creates a barrier” that would exacerbate health inequalities for those who may not be able to afford them. “Charging for tests will contribute to covid-19's continuing spread.” Here are my thoughts on this subject, telecast live today in the morning show with Ben Prater about this thorny issue on BBC Radio Wiltshire.

We are joined by Anneliese Levy a health communications specialist that excels in health content research and development. Founder of Thoughtful Content Anneliese is in high demand for her research plus copy skills – a winning formula for anyone tackling health messaging. Her clients include national charities such as Blood Cancer UK and global pharmaceutical companies. Anneliese shares two examples of how insightful based content can increase impact and three top tips for inhouse communicators on how to do research internally. Case study 1: Blood Cancer UK focused on reframing messaging around healthy eating that was turning people off to reshaping it to encourage a new love of food. Avoiding the loss aversion of giving her something else you love when going through cancer treatment. A small but powerful change that can positively help instead of hinder people at the most vulnerable when going through cancer treatment.Case 2 : Physiotherapy for Older people: Anneliese's research showed how important our feeling of ‘being young is' an interesting insight for anyone planning older person campaign's. Her three tips include:Tip 1: Speak directly to your audience, explore experiences, perceptions and barriers. Speaks to non-experts as well as your patient experts. Go outside a normal pool of people. Snowball sampling is when you build contacts on contacts often through social media. e.g. Anneliese work on pancreatic cancer researched with older people in East London who knew nothing about pancreatic cancer which is most likely the same knowledge you would have when newly diagnosed. This also opens up opportunities to talk about Tip 2: Hang out with your audience indirectly, in social forums etc.Tip 3: Review existing research –for example Cochrane Review and Google Scholar don't be put off by academic papers there are often plain language summaries. “It cannot possibly be true that we have the best scientists working on blood cancer, if that scientific community only represents one bit of the population.” In Part 2 of our conversation with Gemma Peters, CEO of Blood Cancer UK, we delve in to what Diversity, Equity and Inclusion really means for the charity sector. Gemma shares the responsibility she feels being a white leader, with an all-white Board, Executive Team and with predominantly white scientific researchers. We look at specific initiatives that Blood Cancer UK are pursuing to address this and how, as a sector, we can look to disestablish racist structures and precedents. Gemma reveals that the true inspiration and drive for the work comes from the people she and her organisation are striving to help.

“We do really need the government to acknowledge that this (research) investment is critical. It's critical to patients, but it's also critical to the UK as an entity. The UK's strength in medical research is something that we are all so proud of.” In this very first episode of The Charity CEO Podcast we speak with Gemma Peters, CEO of Blood Cancer UK. In Part 1 of our conversation, we talk about leading through the current crisis; the impact of delayed healthcare and medical research for cancer patients; discuss the tough decisions behind redundancy consultations at Blood Cancer UK; collaboration in the charity sector; and even outline a proposal for setting up a Charity Mergers and Partnerships hub! Gemma reflects on what she has learnt as a leader and on decision making with imperfect data. She also shares how being open and vulnerable has actually helped bring her closer to her team and made them collectively more effective.
