This week on the RIPEcast, Space Cowboys welcome back Smoove to the Bay Area. Aloha Funkateers Back in Y2K era San Francisco, there was a trend amongst the uber cool restaurants where - as part of the dining room ambience - you would often find a DJ mixing live during dinner service. It was here, spinning vinyl all night propped up at the end of the bar, in this bastion of late 20th century California fusion cuisine I found my entrance into the fantastical wonderland that is the Bay Area DJ community. And it was here where I first encountered the Space Cowboys. The subsequent years featured a significant increase of the color orange into my wardrobe, Halloween undergrounds, a Unimog, breakbeats (so. Many. Breakz!) renegades in Golden Gate Park, that thing in the desert, decompression/recompression, Love parades, rhinestones, Martha, NewsBreakz, heartbreakz. And yes, a New Year's Day sunrise party. It was a glorious time to be alive So I think it's fitting my first time back at BOC in *this many* years was the 25th anniversary. I was hella psyched to be on this years line up because, if I'm being perfectly honest, I have missed you all. Spinning this set was a true joy and it was an honor to be back with the original crew. -Smoove

This time we bring it to the security side of Hip Hop, and talk to crowd mover Todd Jefferson. He chats with us about seeing the birth of Hip Hop in NYC, his time as a prison guard on Rikers Island, and his transition to running security for the likes of DJ Chuck Chillout and LL Cool J, among many other very famous artists. Another great view of Hip Hop from behind the scenes. 

Guest, Eric "E Global" Ridenhour, brother of Chuck D from Public Enemy, talks about growing up with Chuck, hip hop then and now, and stories galore. Eric has been on the road with PE since 1988. It's another don't miss.

We circle back to Milwaukee Hip Hop and chat with the Midwest Mixer DJ Doctor B. A pioneer of Milwaukee hip hop, Doc talks about his musical upbringing, his path in hip hop, and his long, illustrious DJ career. Doc's Footnotes- First, the comedian that gave me the white power crack was Patton Oswalt. An inspirational nod to Todd "Peechy" Thomas (aka) Speech of Arrested Development for inspiration during our turntable battles to step my creativity up. This time we get to hear from New York graffiti legend Sen-1, who became famous in the 80s for his subway train work with the legendary IBM Crew. From growing up in Harlem, to bombing sets, to private art commissions, we get a front row seat to birth and growth of hip hop. 

From Wisconsin, to St. Louis, through ATL, and now worldwide, Trackstar the DJ tells all sorts of hip hop tales. Including his serendipitous rise from mixtape maker to becoming the DJ for Run the Jewels.

If you see a plume of black smoke rising from the crossfader then you know Smoove (a.k.a. Ian Chang) just got off the decks. That was the case again last Saturday night at “Shackled”, a rockin' up-and-coming monthly at Shine Dance Lounge (http://www.shinesf.com), where Smoove provided the perfect climax to a fantastic party with one of his signature breakbeat sets. And guess who just so happened to be there to record it for your listening enjoyment? If you've spent any length of time in the San Francisco dance scene, Smoove needs no introduction. He's been igniting packed dance floors (and wearing out crossfaders) with infectious booty-shakin' beats for almost ten years now. But if you aren't from around these parts (or don't get out that often) here's a little more background on this week's talented guest DJ..... Rising out of the 90's Drum 'n Bass scene in San Francisco, Smoove quickly became a fixture on the underground Breakz circuit in 2001 DJ'ing with The Space Cowboys and their mighty Unimog. These days his signature power-funk Breakz sound can be heard every weekend all over San Francisco's night life, from underground warehouse parties to his residencies at The End Up, 1015 and Mighty. All his hard work in the night club trenches has earned him membership in nitevibe.com's DJ Dream Team since 2004 and was voted Best DJ 2008 by the readers of the S.F. Bay Guardian in their annual "Best of the Bay" issue. Taking his sound to the airwaves, Smoove has been featured on XM Satellite Radio's Thump Funk show (XM 80) as well as Below Zero on Energy 92.7 and was a frequent guest on Future Breaks on KUSF. Currently, he can be heard on Fog City Funk every Wednesday night at 8pm PST on Nu Skool Breaks Radio (nsbradio.co.uk) In 2004 he, along with Donna Matrix, started publishing the underground magazine NewsBreakz and more recently launched NBz 2.0 (newsbreakz.com) the on-line version in late 2008. Simply put, Smoove is one of the quintessential taste makers in the San Francisco Breakz scene today and can always be relied on to bring a big party fun sound that makes the crowd go giddy on the dance floor.
