Alien Territory: Radical, Experimental, & Irrelevant Music in 1970s San Diego (Billingsgate Media, 2023) is the untold story of a sleepy Navy town that became the unlikely gathering point for some of the most innovative, unclassifiable American artists of their time. The late 60s arrival of Harry Partch -- hobo composer, iconoclast and inventor of instruments such as the Harmonic Canon and Quadrangularis Reversum -- jump started a revolution that was as much social as it was musical, drawing on the occult, self-realization and radical political movements of 70s Southern California. Artists as diverse as Partch, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Gaburo, Roger Reynolds, Diamanda Galás, Warren Burt, David Dunn, Robert Turman and Master Wilburn Burchette may have pursued different paths -- Sonic Meditations, compositional linguistics, microtonal scales, invented instruments, cutting edge electronics, underwater synthesizers, Tibetan throat singing, environmental sound, pure noise -- but they also sought to dismantle the systems of American life and replace them with a radically inclusive and socially responsive aesthetic that looked to the future even when it sometimes referenced a distant, idyllically imagined past. In their pursuit of "Irrelevant Music" -- Kenneth Gaburo's term for an untainted music free of constraint and compromise -- these disparate artists constitute a shadow history of American experimental music far removed from the European and East Coast models of the time. Bill Perrine is the director of the documentaries Children of the Stars, It's Gonna Blow!!! San Diego's Music Underground, 1986-96, and Why Are We Doing This In Front of People? Bill's website. Bradley Morgan is a media arts professional in Chicago and author of U2's The Joshua Tree: Planting Roots in Mythic America. Metal and hard rock stars Diamanda Galás, Lamb of God's Randy Blythe, Inger Lorre and Malevolence frontman Alex Taylor discuss balancing the emotion with the noise, recording in Charlie Chaplin's studio, and how an artist's duty is to reflect the times. Alex Taylor is the lead singer of the heavy metal band Malevolence, from Sheffield in the UK. They're known for their ferocious sound and live shows, and have supported some of the biggest names in heavy metal including Trivium, Architects and Lamb of God. Singer, pianist and avant-garde luminary Diamanda Galás has gained a huge cult following for her violently compassionate music and stunning four-octave vocal range. American singer Inger Lorre fronted the seminal glam-punk band Nymphs in the 1990s. She is an underground icon and has worked with the likes of Jeff Buckley and Iggy Pop. Randy Blythe is a true legend of heavy metal who is the frontman of one of the genre's most important bands of the last 30 years, Lamb of God. His band have released 10 studio albums and taken their thunderous sound to sold-out stages across the world.

BIO: The San Diego-born Galás came up playing both classical and jazz music. She not only accompanied her Anatolian Greek father's gospel choir and joined his New Orleans-style band, but also performed as a piano soloist with the San Diego Symphony at the age of 14. She went on to play with various groups that included heavies of the new-jazz thing, such as a circa-'74 combo in Pomona, California, that included cornetist Bobby Bradford, sax man David Murray bassist Mark Dresser, and drummer Stanley Crouch. She made her first public performance in 1979, collaborating on an opera with Vinko Globokar and Amnesty International about the arrest torture, and assasination of a Turkish woman for treason. In 1982 she released her debut album, The Litanies of Satan, which showcased her early forays into unorthodox vocal expression and multiphonics, and which included an 18-minute performance piece titled “Wild Women With Steak Knives.” She has created work dealing with AIDS (including the recently re-mastered The Divine Punishment), genocide and mental disease, as well as compositions for voice and piano set to the works of exiled poets. She also collaborated with Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones on the 1994 album The Sporting Life. Austin Young is from Reno, Nevada and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. The foundation of his career is from studying at Parsons in Paris. Early in his career, Austin transferred his interests from traditional portrait painting towards a long celebrated career in portrait photography. In many ways, Austin is more accurately described as an image-maker: his projects illustrate the sublime qualities of character that make celebrated people unique. Based on a nuanced visual language of pop-culture iconography, his trademark style and techniques have captured a broad palette of musicians, artists and celebrities including Debbie Harry, Leigh Bowery and Margaret Cho, among others. In multiple bodies of work, Austin confuses personality and identity issues in confrontational and unapologetic image making about people who often split gender roles, stereotypical constraints and socially-constructed identities. Austin is co-founder and artist of Fallen Fruit, artist duo Austin Young and David Allen Burns, a contemporary art collective that uses fruit as a material for projects that investigate the hyper- qualities of collaboration. “Austin Young reconstructs tropes of pop art and pop culture into alarmingly brilliant new icons” - Shana Nys Drambot"Working with Austin Young is like being alone in a room with a spirit who wants to meet you. He is not interested in your mortality: he is interested in your immortality. [...] He reminds me of the great Hollywood portrait photographers from another era, of George Hurrell, in particular, who was interested in the painting, not the snapshot. There is always a place for the secular in journalism. Thankfully that place will not be in Mr. Young's studio." - Diamanda Galás"Austin Young is the best artist working in photography today. His work captures beauty at its most vital, carnal, visceral, alive! His exuberant intensity is matched by his innate sense of balance and upmost respect for glamour, in all of its many decent and indecent forms. His work will be seen as important historical reference for our times, and his name will be legend." - Margaret Cho"Austin's images are, like me, the best of both worlds. Flawless and perfect, they are dreamily artificial -- while somehow simultaneously remaining organic, genuine and very real." - Jackie Beat“I was beyond thrilled when Austin Young expressed interest in photographing Peaches Christ, not only because I knew Austin would create a gorgeously iconic Peaches image (which he did) but because it meant I'd be included in a brilliant body of work I've admired for years. Austin Young's subjects are my idols and his portraits pay glamorous tribute to the often over-looked world of dark divas, drag superstars, and underground film icons." - Peaches Christ“I'm pretty unabashed in my enthusiasm for Austin Young's work. I think he's the most original photographer to emerge in America since David LaChapelle.” -Richard Metzger
With Chris now off on tour with his rather excellent band, Outblinker, we decided to split our Diamanda Galas episode into two as both of the bois were passing each other like ships in the night this last fortnight. So this week Chris and Vicki dive deep into The Singer by Diamanda Galás and a whole lot more…
Diamanda Galás is the living definition of what it means to be avant-garde. An extraordinary and genre-bending vocalist, composer, pianist, performance artist, and activist, she has been creating uncompromising work that cries out against injustice for over 40 years. Her 12 studio albums include the classic 1986 collection “The Divine Punishment”—a masterwork created in response to the AIDS crisis—that was just remastered and re-released in June. And her brand new album “Broken Gargoyles,” inspired by the isolation of maimed WWI veterans, is coming out August 26. In this episode of BUST's “Poptarts” podcast, she reveals details about her reclusive life, teaches us how to shame our enemies into submission, and surprises us with her deep love of borscht belt comedians. (We didn't see that one coming!)
With Mark currently whirling his way around Europe, this week's (and next week's) episode fell to Chris and Vicki. The choice is somewhat...strange, and in this episode they take a look into the wild career of Diamanda Galás and all that weird noise she makes.
Merrill Nisker (born 11 November 1966), better known by her stage name Peaches, is a Canadian electroclash musician and producer who burst into transcontinental favor with her very particular brand of cocksure rapping and groovebox beats. Peaches was an unlikely success story, making her musical mark after the age of 30 in a genre not commonly known for recognizing its female or its aging participants. Her unique rapping style and stage show brought her great popularity first in Europe and then in North America. Some of her lyrics and performances have been rejected due to them being potentially offensive, and a lot of her songs are themed on gender identity. Her work propagates sexual freedom and reversal of gender roles. In this episode Peaches selecting some of her favourite music for her Wise Women BBC Radio 6 Music takeover on December 2015. Lineup: A Taste Of Honey, Björk, David Bowie, Missy Elliott, PJ Harvey, L7, L'Trimm, Krisma, Suicide, Light Asylum, Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush, Planningtorock, Roberta Flack, M.I.A., Nire, Maluca, Nani Castle, Lafawndah, Kim Carnes, Savages, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Sinéad O'Connor, Yma Sumac, Diamanda Galás, The Regrettes, TT The Artist, Althea And Donna

Music is an all encompassing but insular process. A different air. Space and place is important . The Creatures played blind mans buff with a map of the world. The amazing three day New Years eve! Budgie bought Heinz baked beans and some drum sticks to Hawaii. A sense of occasion. To go outside of the normal experience. You have to grow by being put in a different environment and then responding. You need to unravel. Life is about risking things. Lol found Love in Los Angeles. Punk gave us a kick. People work more with references now rather than their own experience. Constant access to music from references that was made from an idiosyncratic place. No to curation, it's not life! Zola is in this for the music not the industry which does not reward innovation. More gradient less algorithm. Weightlifting to the Dead Kennedys. She was a 6 year old opera singer. Resplendent in Red in Seattle like a zoo animal. Performing is a chance to let your ID go wild and lose control! Diamanda Galás as example. Budgie and Lol found our tribe in our youth. As did Zola growing up in Wisconsin in the woods. Feeling like an introverted outcast. Making music is like putting out the feelers to find people in common. That's what music community is about. Music holds communal catharsis. We are in a period of transition - pandemic, politics, change is coming. We're still hopeful after all these years!CONNECT WITH US:Curious Creatures: Website: https://curiouscreaturespodcast.com Facebook: @CuriousCreaturesOfficial Twitter: @curecreatures Instagram: @CuriousCreaturesOfficial Lol Tolhurst: Facebook: @officialloltolhurst Twitter: @LolTolhurst Instagram: @lol.tolhurst Budgie: Facebook: @budgieofficial Twitter: @TuWhit2whoo Instagram: @budgie646Zola Jesus:Facebook: @zolajesusofficialInstagram: @zolajesusTwitter: @zolajesusCurious Creatures is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Peter and Dre come up to an album that's so scary and disturbing that they're not exactly sure how to describe it and where it belongs. It sure is intense, though. Diamanda Galás' 'Vena Cava' definitely has an impact. In questa puntata si parla di Candy Darling, Jack Smith, Cindy Sherman, John Waters, David Lynch, Maria Montez, Jonas Mekas, Robert Mapplethorpe, Antonio Canova, Dracula, Patti Smith, Sam Wagstaff, Mick Jagger, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Michel Foucault, Peter Hujar, Richard Avedon, Susan Sontag, William Burroughs, Sylvester, The Cockettes, David Wojnarowicz, Félix González-Torres, Ross Laycock, General Idea (Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal, AA Bronson), Tom Cruise, Robert Indiana, Caspar David Friedrich, Keith Haring, Elio Fiorucci, Salvatore Ala, Vincent van Gogh, Hans Haacke, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Paul Morrissey, Paul Thek, Rudi Fuchs, Pontus Hultén, Harald Szeemann, Derek Jarman, Ken Russell, Sex Pistol, Thorbbing Gristle, The Smiths, Jack Birkett (Orlando), Caravaggio, Tilda Swinton, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Friedrich Nietzche, Diamanda Galás e Phillip-Dimitri Galás.

At the height of the AIDS crisis, Americans faced an uncertain future. Our healthcare system wasn’t prepared for a pandemic and Republicans in government were happy to watch people die. Sound familiar?During those heartbreaking times, artists made sense of the overwhelming despair by giving voice to the isolation people felt and they helped guide our communities forward through a world that had abandoned them.Today, performance artist Hereclitus Vernon joins us to talk about being one of the first people to come down with COVID-19 during the early days of the quarantine. Seven months later, Here is still dealing with the health consequences of the coronavirus.Listen as Here takes us on the journey for the fight of their life and how they used the power of art and meditation to help heal themselves.HERECLITUS HERE VERNON: https://linktr.ee/HereaclitusPlus- a look at the groundbreaking art made during the AIDS crisis of Diamanda Galás, Tim Miller, and Marlon Riggs whose film Tongues Untied almost got Republicans to shut down funding for Public Television.

Since his violent death in 1975, Pier Paolo Pasolini remains internationally renowned as a filmmaker, but less known as a poet, journalist, critic and activist outside his native Italy. This week, Juliet talks to Italian author Daniela Cascella about Pasolini’s varied artistic practice, the persecution he suffered as an outspoken leftist and openly gay man, and the context of post-fascist, post-war Italy. Today we're surveying the front lines of musical sensibilities. Avant garde singer, pianist, composer, and painter Diamanda Galás isn't your everyday rom-com soprano. With a voice that's been known to induce fear in a single note, bolstered by a three-and-a-half octave range, Diamanda's followers range from fringe jazz cats to left field metalheads. Let's let the work speak for itself; in this case, the work consists of peculiar re-workings of traditional jazz tunes… with a couple of surprises as well. The album is called All the Way, borrowed from its titular track, a cover of the familiar Frank Sinatra tune. Follow the originals with the provided playlist! We'll explain them as we go. Also stick around for a discussion on the necessity of surveying all sides of the spectrum---good/bad, ugly/beautiful, moral/immoral---for only then do we have sufficient context for passing judgement. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Döden. Utan krusiduller.

"In 1913 Futurist Luigi Russolo developed several noise machines, which he named ‘intonarumori’. In his manifesto, The Art of Noise, Russolo argued that musical instruments could no longer satisfy man's thirst for sounds. Almost 100 years later, people are still exploring the possibilities of sound. This is what I tried to capture in this mix - testing the limits of sound, from shrieking highs to almost imperceptible lows, finding new ways of interpreting and portraying life through the medium of sound. Despite including over 100 artists, the mix by no means represents a completist viewpoint; so many perhaps important artists in the development of 'noise' were left out. It was not my intention to do a 'who's who' of noise music, but rather to show how the exploration of sound has developed over time and how fascinating these explorations are. I did at times take into account the historical significance of the piece/artist when choosing tracks, although I was steered mainly by what was sonically interesting to me. Well that's it - the mix should speak for itself. If you are interested in digging deeper please follow the links provided. Listen at maximum volume and enjoy."
