We had the pleasure of interviewing Sofía Valdés over Zoom video!Acclaimed Panamanian singer-songwriter Sofía Valdés unveils her anxiously awaited self-titled debut album, Sofía Valdés, out now via Warner Records. In bringing the 10-track album to life, Sofía worked extensively with producers Michael Uzowuru (known for his work on groundbreaking albums like Rosalía's Motomami and SZA's Ctrl), Alex Goose (Vince Staples, Childish Gambino) and Carter Lang (SZA, Lykke Li), as well as in-demand musicians like Local Natives guitarist Ryan Hahn and Diana Gordon. From the epic “Tacones Por La Puerta” featuring cinematic strings from acclaimed Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai to the guitar-driven funk of “Already Yours” and the tender plea on “Un Momento,” the album affirms Sofía as a bold and eloquent songwriter inspired by her family's deep, multi-generational connection to music. She paved the way for the album's arrival with fan favorite collaborations with Latin sensations DannyLux on “Lento” and Cuco on “How's That Working Out,” which earned widespread critical praise, including Rolling Stone who hailed its “modern bossa nova blend of jangly guitar and sleek beats perfect for late summer,” and Ones To Watch who called it “a collab of indie Latino royalty."Her catalog to date — including her previous EPs Silvia, In Bloom, and Ventura — has received a long list of critical acclaim from the likes of NPR, W Magazine, Interview Magazine, NYLON, and many more for her beautifully original blend of bossa nova, folk, and pop.ABOUT SOFÍA VALDÉS Sofia Valdes, a singer/songwriter born and bred in Panama, creates the kind of emo onally honest and beautifully original pop music that could only come from years of exploration. After learning to play guitar at the age of eight and writing her first song at 13, the independent-minded artist sharpened her craft in part by building an eclectic sonic vocabulary informed by everything from folk and bossa nova to '60s Motown and '70s soul. Valdes alchemizes those inspira ons into a sound all her own, gracing each track with her indelible songwriting and beguiling voice. With its transcendent melodies and shapeshifting rhythms, Ventura is an elegant introduction the vibrant musicality that may very well be in Valdes's blood: her great-grandfather was the legendary Cuban musician Miguelito Valdes, and her great-great grandmother was Silvia De Grasse (a Panamanian singer who once performed with Louis Armstrong). In this episode, we talk about the record label Continental and their (allegedly) melted albums. After the label ran out of Secos e Molhados LPs to sell in 1973, and the lack of raw material during the global oil crisis (and the Brazilian dictatorship's terrible administration), they decided to melt their back catalog to press them into new Secos e Molhados. Whether is factually hard to prove which albums were melted, is well documented that Arthur Verocai's debut and many of the Continental albums were taken out of circulation. So it leads us to speculate which ones, and those are five albums that we picked to talk about: Heraton Salvanini and his debut "SP/73"; Walter Franco's "Ou Não"; O Pessoal do Ceará only record registered as a group; Terço self-titled second album; and Paulo Bagunça e a Tropa Maldita. Eu visto a natureza para me saber parte dela.

THIS SHOW IS A SELECTION OF BRAZILIAN POPULAR MUSIC FROM 1964 TO 1973. A DECADE OF GREAT MUSIC IN A BACKGROUND OF POLITICAL TURMOIL AND WORLDWIDE FOOTBALL SUCCESS. The name for the show is taken from one of the most famous songs by Marcos Valle. This is “Paz e Futebol”. I replaced Paz (peace) for Música as this is the subject matter of the show. Peace was not a description of those years as the 10 years covered in the show were a time of intense internal social and political conflict in Brazil. Bossa Nova (New Wave), the Brazilian homegrown jazz version, was the music style that many young musicians followed and developed during these 10 years from 1964 to 1973. At the same time, foreign pop and rock infiltrated the music of some of these young musicians. This was not well accepted by everybody in Brazil. It was a time of division between the MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and the Jovem Guarda. The latter was a music movement influenced by the American Rock & Roll and followers of Elvis Presley and Little Richard. Roberto Carlos and Tim Maia were some of the musicians that embraced the electrification of music to the chagrin of the most nationalistic and, at the same time, left-leaning musicians of the MPB that oppose the Americanisation of the Brazilian music. Then in the late sixties, the Tropicalistas (a hippie and psychedelic sixties movement in the Brazilian music) established a link between these two groups even though in a more avant-garde and dadaist outcome. MPB and Tropicalistas were both inspired by Samba and Bossa Nova's greatest artists and composers such as Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Baden Powell and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes. In these ten years emerged an outstanding generation of talented musicians and performers. The list is immense. I highlight among them: Marcos Valle, Milton Nascimiento, Sergio Mendes, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, Jorge Ben Gal Costa, Arthur Verocai, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, Alceu Valença, Astrud Gilberto, Joyce, Edu Lobo Elza Soares, Tim Maia, Naná Vasconcelos, Eumir Deodato, Wilson Simonal, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Maria Bethania, MPB4, Os Novos Baianos and Os Mutantes. I can continue putting more names and I will still miss some of these great Brazilian artists of the 10-year-golden period. Only I hope this selection opens the curiosity for the extraordinary music of Brazil. One of the most musical countries in the world which have attracted music fans all over the world since the days of Bossa Nova. Tonight we welcome a guy to take over the playlist who has truly been making his own way both in style and substance in the music world while maintaining his secret identity via encrypted Scooby Doo mask. His meld of heavy beats, lo-fi, and indie rock stylings have gained great attention from some important names over the past several months, and he lined up a great playlist of influences and songs he's personally worked on in the studio.

The Melbourne-based band Hiatus Kaiyote have found a passionate global following for their sound, a futurist vision of proggy fusion jazz-funk. Their latest album, 'Mood Valiant,' was released this summer and includes contributions from the legendary Brazilian artist Arthur Verocai. KEXP's Larry Mizell Jr. talks with the band's bassist Paul Bender about pushing their creative boundaries and refusing to compromise their vision for commercial appeal. “I don't think there's ever going to be a moment that Hiatus truly breaks out into the true mainstream because we just pretty much always throw in something that's going to make that not happen musically,” Bender says. He describes the band's sound as “between being kind of catchy and likable and a bit obscure.” Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CHAI「Nobody Knows We Are Fun」、Hiatus Kaiyote「Get Sun (feat. Arthur Verocai)」、Igorrr「Very Noise」の3曲。 MC:imdkm、姫乃たま(休養中) ゲストMC:三浦康嗣(口ロロ) 〈Source〉 CHAI「Nobody Knows We Are Fun」(https://open.spotify.com/track/4WTvCDUAwAcLomV5qf8xwU?si=0a1257a839f64a9f)、Yaeji『WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던』(https://open.spotify.com/album/2WCnWcLzQj6nXIdJNeVUjM?si=v8bCQOnfSoiiQoMIwXBg7g)、CHAI「チョコチップかもね (feat. The Carters (Beyonce and Jay-Z), Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Chance the Rapper AND Drake have all sampled work by Hiatus Kaiyote, a not-as-well-known outfit from Melbourne. After being introduced to the work of Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai by bandmate and drummer Perrin Moss, who cites Verocai as “changing his world,” the band was able to collaborate with the legendary producer on “Get Sun.”

Episode 8 starts off with some crazy, digital sound-design soul from tennyson, followed by the new single from KING's forthcoming debut album. On the hip-hop tip, there's a soulful stepper from the Anderson .Paak & Knxwledge EP, the new Jigmastas and Terrace Martin's lush Kendrick Lamar remix of TPAB's 'Alright'. A cut from Kyle Hall's new 'From Joy' LP gets a spin with some deep jazz/broken beat from WU15 aka Henry Wu & K15. There's a brand new John Morales M&M disco mix of Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra featuring string arrangements by Arthur Verocai and some house courtesy of Renato P, Chaos In the CBD and St Germain + much more in the mix!
Second mix: I feel blessed that René asked me to go through my Brazilian collection and I hopefully was able to come up with a selection that represents a small picture of the great musical culture of this beautiful and outstanding country. Thankfully I had the opportunity to visit Brazil two times and hence this mix is dedicated to those lovely and most hospitable people I’ve ever met - MUITO OBRIGADO!!! This selection contains music by Arthur Verocai, Tim Maia, Lô Borges, Wilson Simonal, Jorge Ben, Marcos Valle, Milton Nascimento etc.
